DANIEL Tranter almost drowned the first time he jumped in a pool and survived a horror car accident just three years ago but now he is a Commonwealth Games champion.

In a wonderful story of fighting back against the odds which probably mirrors the effort of the entire Australian team these last two years, Tranter became Australia’s 14th individual gold medallist of the meet to cap six days of great racing.

Tranter’s victory was one of many highlights for Australia after a long and successful week at the pool where the swim team collected 19 gold, 21 silver and 17 bronze medals to eclipse their greatest total medal haul at a Commonwealth Games.

Tranter secured a stunning 200m medley gold medal on the final night of swimming at the Games, charging from sixth to first in the breaststroke leg to storm to victory.

The Sydney-based 22-year-old climbed onto the lane ropes and slapped his chest in celebration, with the entire Australian team on their feet poolside to cheer home a memorable win.

The women’s 4x100m medley relay team, inspired by an epic butterfly leg by Emma McKeon (56.95s) and superb anchor by Cate Campbell (51.59s) ensured Australia stormed to victory in the final 200m over England.

Australia won the gold medal in 3:56.23. with England taking silver in 3:57.03 and Canada the bronze medal in 4:00.57.

It was fitting that McKeon’s heroic led paved the way for gold, taking her tally to four gold and two bronze medals for the meet.

The men’s 4x100m medley relay team then tried to reproduce the breathtaking grandstand finish but world champion James Magnussen couldn’t quite haul in England’s Adam Brown after diving in two seconds behind but ultimately fell just 0.70s shy of victory.

Tranter was the star, even invited media to join him on the 30-hour flight home tomorrow night where he could entertain them with further stories about his battle to the top.

He won in a time of 1:57.83 from Scotland’s Daniel Wallace (1:58.72) and South Africa’s Chad le Clos (1:58.85).

“It’s an unbelievable feeling, I really wish I could describe it better for you guys,” Tranter said.

“It’s such an amazing feeling, I’ve been swimming since I was seven-years-old.

“I’ve always seen the Australian swim team and the success they’ve had at Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games and always been successful in the pool. To finally be part of that is a little bit surreal.”

Tranter almost drowned at a friend’s birthday party as a kid, rescued by his frantic mum Leanne, and survived a car accident two months before the London Olympic trials when he slammed into the back of a car at 60km/h when a water bottle got stuck behind his brake pedal.

“Unfortunately it’s been a bit of a bumpy road but it adds to the experience,” he said.

“Having to work through all those obstacles has definitely made this somewhat more important to me, it’s kind of like the light at the end of the tunnel for me.”

Cameron McEvoy took his Commonwealth bounty to five medals — two gold and three silver — when he was second in the 50m freestyle.

It meant McEvoy, 20, finished bridesmaid in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events and the combined margins to gold add up to just a minuscule 0.79 seconds.

“I’m stoked with it. It’s been an awesome meet, I’ve learnt a lot both in and out of the water,” McEvoy said.

“This is my fifth medal so far and if you asked me a year ago if I thought I’d get five medals at least at the Commonwealth Games I would’ve been like ‘hell no I’d be lucky to get one if I’m in a relay.’

“I think I’ve had one of the best weeks of my life.”

By the end of the night McEvoy had added another silver medal to his tally, which he will receive at a later date as a heat swimmer for Australia’s medley relay team.

Australia’s Mack Horton produced the swim of his life to finish second in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 14:48.76, behind Canada’s Ryan Cochrane (14:44.03) with Daniel Jervis (14:55.33) of Wales just sprinting past Australia’s Jordan Harrison (14:55.71) to snatch the bronze medal.

Bronte Barratt claimed her second bronze medal in the 400m freestyle, giving her a matching pair from the 200m freestyle on night one.

She led early but was overhauled after the halfway by New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle (4:04.47) and Jazz Carlin (4:05.16) from Wales to finish in a time of 4:06.02.

“I just tried to hold on for dear life I guess,” Barratt said.

“I’m just happy I got up there, I wasn’t sure what the times would be like tonight.

“I didn’t think it would be particularly fast. I just knew it would be a battle and that is what it was and I’m really happy I got my hand on the wall.”

The nationally touring photography exhibition – ‘Selling an American Dream: Australia’s Greek Cafe’ – which explores this important chapter in the development of Australian culture, is now returning to Sydney for display at the Hurstville Museum and Gallery, from 2 August until 28 September 2014.

Critically applauded since its initial launch at the National Museum of Australia in 2008, curators Effie Alexakis and Leonard Janiszewski have cleverly utilised a revealing interplay of historical and contemporary photographs, married to extended oral history captions, and overlaid by a dramatic multimedia presentation created by filmmaker Michael Karris, to present a social history exhibition that has powerfully resonated with audiences across the country.

Australia’s Greek café is presented as a global phenomenon in the modern era. Food-catering enterprises run by Greek migrants successfully married Hellenic and cross-cultural influences with local needs. Greek-run cafés populated Australian country towns and cities, merging local fare with new
American food-catering ideas.

Prior to the explosion of American fast-food franchises, Greek cafés contributed to a major change in Australian eating habits. While a traditional mixed grill remained a favourite, Greek cafés were known for their introduction of American sodas, ice-cream sundaes, milkshakes, hamburgers, milk chocolate and hard sugar candies, into communities right across Australia.

Alexakis’ stunning photographs capture the decor of the cafés, their customers and the owners who worked hard to make their businesses successful. Memorabilia from several Australian Greek cafés including classic Art Deco café tableware, equipment and menus, succeed in bring the era of Australia’s Greek cafés to life.

Research undertaken throughout Australia and internationally highlights these cafés as a ‘Trojan Horse’ for the Americanisation of Australian popular culture – not only affecting eating habits but also cinema, music and architecture.

Throughout most of the twentieth century, Australia’s Greek cafés were powerhouses generating unprecedented social and cultural change.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 2 August, at 2.30 pm at Hurstville City Museum & Gallery, 14 MacMahon Street, Hurstville, Sydney. The exhibition will run until 28 September, Tuesday – Saturday 10.00 am – 4.00 pm, Sunday 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm.

Tessa’s recipe for a successful cookbook is nothing else but passion, ‘Tessa Kiros: The Recipe Collection’ was published in May by Murdoch Books.

130 family-friendly recipes from Kiros’ eight best selling cookbooks are now compiled in her newly released Tessa Kiros: The Recipe Collection.

It doesn’t take long to realise, once you’ve struck up a conversation with Tessa Kiros, why her nine cookbooks have become bestsellers, at a time when the bookstores are over-saturated with so many that every cooking show contestant has their own.

You will definitely remember two things about Tessa – travelling and passion for food is what drives her and what makes her stand out.

She becomes the interviewer towards the end of our conversation – digs into my heritage, asks about one favourite traditional recipe.

You witness her passion.

Born to a Finnish mother and Greek Cypriot father in London, growing up in a multicultural family didn’t seem like anything unusual for Tessa Kiros. When she was four, they moved to South Africa, where she mixed with many different communities. Even her own family was a mixture of everything, Tessa says – of French, Scottish, Finnish, Greek, Cypriot.

At the age of 18 she set off to travel. Without knowing, it was her first lesson into the world’s cultures and traditions, new ways of living and eating.

“It was something that I always wanted to do. I wanted to study and travel at the same time, to learn about different cultures which interested me and to learn more about these different places – not only food, but the way people lived. I guess it’s just a part of who I am,” Tessa tells Neos Kosmos.

This fascination with human interaction and with people of the world and their lives, customs and food took Tessa around the world – from working as a volunteer in kibbutz in Israel, to Greek bars and Sydney restaurants. The things she learned then are still in use today, she says.

And without any intention, it was this experience that served as Tessa’s informal training in cooking.

“I chose to work with the people who really inspired me. They were my mentors in my journey through the world of food. I love travelling. Food. People.
Different cultures and traditions. Why they do what they do and how they put their dishes together. How people, families and nations connect,” she says.

Passion for cooking was already there even then.

“I didn’t know then that this is what I would be doing. I didn’t think then that I would write a book. It wasn’t intentional, or planned.

“In fact, my first book was just a collection of recipes for me which I wanted to keep to remind me of time spent in Tuscany. It was like a diary – and then I thought ‘I have a book here’.”

On both sides of Tessa’s family, the Finnish and Greek Cypriot side, food was a big thing. It was in her parents house that Tessa was learning first hand the world’s cultures and cuisines.

“The Christmas Eves were with homemade mustard, and cinnamon and cardamom buns made by my mother, and lamb, souvlakia and different Cypriot delicacies like flaounes for Easter – by my father.”

For Tessa, it was always about the food of everyday people.

After having lived in the Tuscan countryside for the last 20 years, with her husband Giovanni and two daughters, she is impressed with the simplicity of their cuisine over and over again.

“Where I live, you can’t just go in the afternoon and get Vietnamese food. It’s beautiful, and peaceful here, a nice place to bring up your children. Food is very important here.

“I was totally inspired by the clear way people eat in Tuscany – no questions – just what is in season is accepted – when the produce is at its best tasting, freshest and also less costly.

“It’s very easy to eat well over here. You can just go anywhere and get a great tomato and a mozzarella and great olive oil. They don’t look for things when they are not in season. For me it has been an incredible learning experience,” Tessa says with admiration.

With a degree in anthropology and sociology, no wonder the culture and heritage of people is what interests Tessa in one’s cuisine. And it is her interests and passion that are the inevitable ingredients of her bestseller cookbooks.

“The products they’ve been given or have grown, a lot of thought went into it, it’s what makes a culture and for me it is what brings a culture together at the table.

“I always write a book about something that interests me. Either something I want to record, like a diary, or something that I’m looking to learn more about.

“I also have my own team that works for me – it’s a good combination of efforts. Each part of the book is important and has to have an integrity.”

With her books often described as part travel guides and part cookbooks, Tessa says travel is part of her writing, not a separate notion. For her book about the cuisine of Venice, she visited the city on numerous occasions – in order to put her experiences and feelings into it, as she says.

“Without it you can just open any other book and take recipes from Venice. It has to be authentic, genuine, your own feelings. And if other people like it – that’s wonderful.”

Tessa’s latest book, The Recipe Collection, was released by Murdoch Books in May this year. It’s a selection of recipes from the author’s culinary publishing career to date, with over 130 meal ideas pulled from her Finnish and Greek Cypriot heritage alongside dishes she has discovered in the tavernas, restaurants and neighbourhood kitchens of the many countries she has visited on her travels.

She is always working on something new, she tells Neos Kosmos, full of hope that her next project will involve travel. With certainty, she assures me it’s going to be a mixture of things that interest her.

“Otherwise I will stop.”

Melbourne Victory were clearly the stronger team when they took on Bentleigh Greens, showing their pre-season training is well on track.

A penalty goal by Jesse Makarounas was the icing on the cake for Melbourne Victory’s first pre-season win, taking on Greek sponsored club Bentleigh Greens.

Playing their fourth game in two weeks, Bentleigh Greens are suffering at the hands of an unbelievably busy fixture, but ensured their match with the A-League club wouldn’t be so easy despite the 0-3 score.

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat gave Besart Berisha, Carl Valeri and Matthieu Delpierre their first debuts for the team, with all three managing to show their worth early in the match.

The Brisbane Roar transfer, Berisha created the legwork for Connor Pain to score the first goal in the first 18 minutes, while Leigh Broxman brought the navy blues their second 20 minutes later.

Bentleigh found themselves struggling to break the Victory defence, and weren’t able to keep possession enough to create chances for their strikers.

Greek Australian Jesse Makarounas gave Melbourne Victory their third goal in the 57th minute after taking the penalty and sending Bentleigh Green’s
goalkeeper the opposite way.

It was clear Muscat was using the game to get as many players as possible match time, making 10 substitutions to give the younger players a chance.

Melbourne Victory will now play Hume City on Tuesday in their next pre-season match, followed by Greek sponsored team Port Melbourne Sharks on August 5.

AUSTRALIA’S march to a Budget surplus could take longer than expected but the nation has retained its prized triple-A credit rating for the journey.

Standard & Poor’s has reaffirmed its top sovereign credit rating and stable outlook for Australia, saying the nation’s economic reform agenda has made it resilient to international shocks such as the financial crisis.

In a report published on Tuesday, S&P analyst Craig Michaels said Australia benefited from “strong public policy settings, economic resilience, and significant fiscal and monetary policy flexibility”.

But S&P predicted the combined government deficit would now narrow more slowly than it expected a year ago.

Net debt across the three tiers of government was expected to peak at about 21 per cent of gross domestic product next year before gradually easing, S&P said.

In an unprecedented move, the agency also said it would consider stripping the nation of its triple-A rating if combined government debt crept above 30 per cent of GDP.

“We could lower the ratings if external imbalances were to grow significantly more than we currently expect, either because the terms of trade deteriorates quickly and markedly, or the banking sector’s cost of external funding increases sharply,” Mr Michaels said.

“Such an external shock could lead to a protracted deterioration in the fiscal balance and the public debt burden.”

HSBC Australia chief economist Paul Bloxham said Australia’s debt levels were not expected to go anywhere near S&P’s debt ceiling and the nation “certainly doesn’t have a budget emergency”.

The ratings agency said Australia’s GDP growth would average 2.9 per cent over the next four years — slightly below its expectations a year ago — with its terms of trade to decline further, in line with falling commodity prices.

Much of the nation’s growth prospects hinged on its dependence on China, its biggest trading partner.

Mr Bloxham said that while commodity prices had slipped this year, they were still very high historically and the ramp-up in liquefied natural gas exports was just beginning.

“We also expect the share of Australia’s exports to China to rise from about 32 per cent now to 40 per cent by 2020,” he said.

Kon Vatskalis, with Labor leader Delia Lawrie at his side, announces his retirement from Northern Territory politics.

Long-serving Labor politician Kon Vatskalis has announced he is quitting politics after 13 years in the Northern Territory’s Legislative Assembly.

Speaking at a press conference today Mr Vatskalis said “in danger of paraphrasing one of our famous colleagues, it’s time,” referring to Gough Whitlam’s campaign slogan for the 1972 federal election.

“It’s time for me to say goodbye to let some new blood come into Territory politics,” he said.

Asked if he had any regrets, the 57-year-old said: “I didn’t see my children growing up.

“If you compare my life as a public servant and my life as a politician, I’d rather go back to the public service… [working] 8am to 4:21, six weeks’ holidays, no overtime, no weekends.”

Mr Vatskalis has held the seat of Casuarina since 2001 when Labor won Darwin’s northern suburbs for the first time, taking government from the Country Liberals after a 27-year stranglehold on power.

His decision to leave politics will force a by-election, but the Government is yet to set a date.

Hard yards during live exports suspension, Montara spill

Mr Vatskalis described his 11 years as a Northern Territory government minister as the “hardest I have worked in my life”.

He was the primary industry minister when his federal Labor counterpart Joe Ludwig suspended live cattle exports in June 2011.

“I think it hurt a lot for the Labor Party in the federal Parliament, but in the Territory our chief minister Paul Henderson responded quickly,” Mr Vatskalis said.

He was also the minister during the Montara oil spill and fire. An offshore oil rig burned for weeks in 2009, spilling millions of litres of oil into the Timor Sea.

Federal and Territory governments have blamed each other for the disaster.

“The whole Montara incident, the Territory had a very small part to play. Montara was a bigger play in order for some federal department to take control of all the oil fields in Australia,” he said.

But he cited the NT Caught fish labelling system as a model for the nation, allowing consumers to distinguish between local and imported fish at the supermarket and in restaurants.

“It’s so successful that every other state has endeavoured to copy it and have it in their own system,” Mr Vatskalis.

Child protection and health the toughest portfolios

Mr Vatskalis was a long-term health minister and minister for child protection.

“I worked hard and I achieved to have a stand-alone department for child protection, putting extra money there, putting more people, because I many times woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the sad stories I heard during the day,” he said.

The Country Liberals government returned child protection to the Health Department when it won office in 2012.

“We focussed on Indigenous children. This Government has not focused on Indigenous children,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“They completely broke down the Indigenous peak body we put in place, and they are going to pay for it, and the worst part of it is Indigenous kids are going to suffer.”

But he described the federally funded oncology unit at Royal Darwin Hospital as one of Labor’s greatest achievements in health.

“We have the most modern oncology centre in Australia. So good that Western Australia… wants to send people for renal dialysis to Alice Springs. Obviously we did something right,” he said.

By-election issues

Mr Vatskalis will not retire from Parliament until after sittings next month, but he warned candidates in the ensuing by-election that the Territory’s tiny 4,000-voter electorates make on-the-ground campaigning even more important that in larger federal and state seats with tens of thousands of voters.

“You know everybody, you know their wedding anniversary, you know their dog’s name, that’s a very different relationship to anywhere else in Australia,” he said.

“You can’t afford to be invisible because people will ask where is my local member?”

He believes the by-election will be decided on cost of living issues, driven by increases in utility bills from the Government-owned Power and Water Corporation.

But Chief Minister Adam Giles has used the retirement of such a senior Labor figure to raise questions about the Opposition Leader’s hold on the job.

“I’m not surprised Kon wants to go, we know there has been continual fighting and instability within the Labor ranks, particularly around Delia Lawrie,” Mr Giles said

Labor said it had recorded swings against the Government in the two by-elections since the Country Liberals took office, and expects to retain the safe Labor seat.

Neither side would nominate a likely candidate for the by-election.

ABBOTT ΚΑΙ PUTIN ΣΥΜΦΩΝΟΥΝ

Ο Ρώσος πρόεδρος, Vladimir Putin, και ο Αυστραλός πρωθυπουργός, Tony Abbott, σε τηλεφωνική συζήτηση που είχαν, συμφώνησαν στην ανάγκη διασφάλισης των κατάλληλων συνθηκών ώστε οι εμπειρογνώμονες της διεθνούς ομάδας να εργαστούν με ασφάλεια στον τόπο της συντριβής του Boeing των Μαλαισιανών Αερογραμμών στην ανατολική Ουκρανία, σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του Κρεμλίνου.

Ο κ. Abbott, ενόψει των τελευταίων εξελίξεων και λίγο μετά τα όσα συζήτησε με τον Ρώσο πρόεδρο, δήλωσε ότι κάποιες από τις σορούς των επιβατών παραμένουν στο σημείο της τραγωδίας και ότι η αποστολή των Αυστραλών στην περιοχή είναι αποκλειστικά για ανθρωπιστικούς λόγους.

Μεταξύ των 298 θυμάτων της αεροπορικής τραγωδίας περιλαμβάνονται 28 Αυστραλοί και εννέα μόνιμοι κάτοικοι της χώρας.
«Πρόκειται, και το υπογραμμίζω, για μια ανθρωπιστική αποστολή. Άλλοι μπορούν να εμπλακούν, αν το επιθυμούν, στόχος μας είναι να εντοπίσουμε τους νεκρούς μας και να τους επαναπατρίσουμε» είπε ο πρωθυπουργός.

Ο πρώην αρχηγός του Αυστραλιανού Στρατού, κ. Angus Houston, ανέφερε χθες ότι οι φιλορώσοι αυτονομιστές μπλοκάρουν κάποια από τα σημεία που βρίσκονται συντρίμμια, καθιστώντας το έργο των εμπειρογνωμόνων, πολύ δύσκολο.

Ο κ. Angus Houston είναι ο ειδικός απεσταλμένος της Αυστραλίας για τον συντονισμό των επιχειρήσεων ανεύρεσης, αναγνώρισης και μεταφοράς των θυμάτων πίσω στην Αυστραλία, αλλά και των ερευνών για να εξακριβωθούν τα αίτια του τραγικού δυστυχήματος.

Παράλληλα και ο πρωθυπουργός της Μαλαισίας Najib Razak θα συναντηθεί με τον Ολλανδό ομόλογό του Mark Rutte αυτήν την εβδομάδα, προκειμένου να συζητήσουν σχετικά με τους τρόπους εξασφάλισης στους εμπειρογνώμονες πλήρους πρόσβασης στον τόπο συντριβής του Boeing της Malaysia Airlines.
Ανακοίνωση που εκδόθηκε από το γραφείο του πρωθυπουργού της Μαλαισίας, αναφέρει ότι ο πρωθυπουργός θα μεταβεί στην Ολλανδία όπου θα έχει συνομιλίες σχετικά με τις συνθήκες κατάρριψης του αεροσκάφους και την ανάπτυξη 30 εμπειρογνωμόνων, που σύμφωνα με την ανακοίνωση, είναι απαραίτητοι για τη διενέργεια της έρευνας.
Ο κ. Najib είπε ότι οι φιλορώσοι αυτονομιστές, οι οποίοι έχουν τον έλεγχο της περιοχής όπου συνετρίβη το αεροπλάνο, ικανοποίησαν δύο από τους όρους της συμφωνίας με την Μαλαισία (επιστροφή των σορών των θυμάτων και των «μαύρων κουτιών»), αλλά ακόμη δεν έχει πραγματοποιηθεί πλήρης έρευνα.

Εν τω μεταξύ, Αυστραλοί ήταν οι πρώτοι συγγενείς θυμάτων της τραγικής πτήσης MH 17 που κατάφεραν το Σάββατο παρά τα μπλόκα των αυτονομιστών, να επισκεφθούν τον τόπο του δυστυχήματος.

Πρόκειται για τον Jerzy και την Angela Dyczynski, γονείς της 25χρονης Fatima, που επέβαινε στη μοιραία πτήση.
«Δεν επρόκειτο να μας σταματήσει τίποτα» δήλωσε η μητέρα της Fatima, από τον χώρο του δυστυχήματος. «Μας είπαν ότι είναι επικίνδυνα, αλλά δεν μας φοβίζει αυτό, εμείς το υποσχεθήκαμε στο παιδί μας να… την επισκεφθούμε» πρόσθεσε.
Η 25χρονη Fatima, σπούδαζε μηχανικός Αεροναυτικής και ονειρευόταν μία μέρα να γίνει πιλότος. Οι γονείς της Fatima έφυγαν από την Αυστραλία λίγο μετά το τραγικό ατύχημα με προορισμό την Ολλανδία προκειμένου να δώσουν δείγματα DNA, τα οποία και θα βοηθήσουν στο έργο αναγνώρισης της κόρης τους. Την απόφασή τους να πάνε στον χώρο του δυστυχήματος, την είχαν πάρει, από την πρώτη στιγμή που έμαθαν τα τραγικά νέα, δήλωσαν οι τραγικοί γονείς.
Να αναφέρουμε ότι άρχισε και η διαδικασία αναγνώρισης των θυμάτων η οποία και λαμβάνει χώρα στην Ολλανδία. Το πρώτο θύμα που αναγνωρίστηκε ήταν ολλανδικής καταγωγής, αλλά το όνομά του δεν ανακοινώθηκε επίσημα. Σε ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Δικαιοσύνης της χώρας αναφερόταν ότι οι αρχές έχουν ήδη ειδοποιήσει τους συγγενείς του θύματος.

Σε άλλη εξέλιξη η Βρετανία προέβη σε κατηγορίες κατά της Ρωσίας για ψευδείς ισχυρισμούς αναφορικά με τα αίτια συντριβής του Boeing των Μαλαισιανών Αερογραμμών. Σε ανακοίνωσή του, το Foreign Office αναφέρει ότι η Ρωσία έχει προβεί σε μία σειρά από αντιφατικούς ισχυρισμούς και διαψεύσεις σχετικά με τη συντριβή του αεροπλάνο, στο οποίο μεταξύ των θυμάτων συμπεριλαμβάνονταν και 10 Βρετανοί.

To Foreign Office είπε ότι είναι «εξαιρετικά πιθανό» το αεροπλάνο να κατερρίφθη από πύραυλο με τον οποίο η Μόσχα είχε προμηθεύσει τους φιλορώσους αυτονομιστές που ελέγχουν την περιοχή.

Η ανακοίνωση αναφέρει ακόμη ότι η Βρετανία διαθέτει πληροφορίες σύμφωνα με τις οποίες οι φιλορώσοι αυτονομιστές της Ουκρανίας που φέρεται να κατέρριψαν το αεροσκάφος, σχεδίαζαν να διασκορπίσουν τμήματα άλλων αεροσκαφών στον τόπο της συντριβής του Boeing 777, ώστε να αποπροσανατολίσουν τους εμπειρογνώμονες.

Η κυβέρνηση Abbott υποχωρεί άτακτα στο επίμαχο θέμα της διαχείρισης των 157 προσφύγων Ταμίλ, που έχει στοιβάξει σε πλοίο των τελωνειακών Αρχών επί έναν μήνα, τώρα.

Φοβούμενη την καταδίκη των χειρισμών του από την ολομέλεια του Ανώτατου Δικαστηρίου Αυστραλίας -το οποίον έχουν προσφύγει οι ταλαιπωρούμενοι πρόσφυγες- η συγχυσμένη κυβέρνηση Abbott ανακοίνωσε προχθές, ότι οι πρόσφυγες θα μεταφερθούν στο κέντρο κράτησης προσφύγων Curtin Detention Centre στη Δυτική Αυστραλία.
Η προχθεσινή ανακοίνωση αποτελεί σημαδιακή απόκλιση της κυβέρνησης από την πολιτική μη εγκατάστασης σε αυστραλιανό έδαφος προσφύγων, που φθάνουν στην Αυστραλία με σαπιοκάραβα. Πρόσφατα ο αλλοπρόσαλλος υπουργός Μετανάστευσης, Scott Morrison, δήλωνε στην κοινοπολιτειακή βουλή, ότι «κάθε φορά που εμφανίζεται πλοιάριο με πρόσφυγες η Αυστραλία θα λαμβάνει τα καθιερωμένα, πλέον μέτρα αναχαίτισής του εκτός των συνόρων της Αυστραλίας».
Αρχικά, η κυβέρνηση έχει ανακοινώσει, ότι οι 157 πρόσφυγες θα μεταφέρονταν σε μυστικό προορισμό, όπου υπάλληλοι των προξενικών Αρχών της Ινδίας θα αποφάσιζαν εάν η χώρα τους θα τους δεχόταν πίσω.

Ο κ. Morrison προσπαθεί να αμβλύνει τις αρνητικές εντυπώσεις από την υπαναχώρηση της κυβέρνησης δηλώνοντας, ότι το ενδιαφέρον των Ινδών προκάλεσε την απόκλιση από την κατεστημένη, σκληρή τακτική της Αυστραλίας κατά των προσφύγων, που καταπλέουν στα χωρικά ύδατα της Αυστραλίας από διάφορα κέντρα διακίνησης προσφύγων της Ασίας.
Κατά τον υπουργό, μόλις αποφασίσει η κυβέρνηση της Ινδίας πόσους Ινδούς πολίτες, ενδεχομένως και πολίτες της Σρι Λάνκα θα πάρει πίσω, οι υπόλοιποι θα μεταφερθούν εκτός Αυστραλίας, οι υπόλοιποι θα μεταφερθούν εκτός Αυστραλίας.
Η σκιώδης υπουργός Μετανάστευσης, Tanya Plibersek, σχολιάζει ότι οι πρόσφυγες έπρεπε να έχουν μεταφερθεί στη στεριά από καιρό αν ο υπουργός Μετανάστευσης είχε παραμερίσει τον εγωισμό του.

«Το πλοίο των τελωνειακών Αρχών έπλεε κοντά στα Νησιά Χριστουγέννων και θα ήταν λογική η διεκπεραίωση των αιτήσεων για άσυλο στα νησιά, αν το επέτρεπε ο εγωισμός του κ. Morrrison» είπε.

Σκληρή κριτική ασκούν στην κυβέρνηση και οι συνήγοροι υπεράσπισης των προσφύγων. Οι συνήγοροι διερωτώνται, γιατί η κυβέρνηση ταλαιπώρησε ένα μήνα τους πρόσφυγες και προειδοποιούν ότι η μεταφορά προσφύγων στην Ινδία ίσως να είναι «παράνομη».
Ο δικηγόρος Hugh de Krester, από το Κέντρο Νομικής Προστασίας Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων υπενθυμίζει, ότι η Ινδία δεν έχει υπογράψει τη συμφωνία του ΟΗΕ για την προστασία των προσφύγων.

«Εμείς εξηγήσαμε στο δικαστήριο, ότι είναι περιορισμένη η νομική δυνατότητα της Αυστραλίας να αναχαιτίσει ένα πλοιάριο και να το ρυμουλκήσει πίσω στη χώρα προέλευσής του, κατά την έννοια ότι δεν επιτρέπεται η Αυστραλία να επιστρέψει πρόσφυγες σε χώρα που θα διατρέξουν κίνδυνο ή σε χώρα η οποία δεν έχει υπογράψει τη συμφωνία του ΟΗΕ για την προστασία των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων των προσφύγων» είπε ο Αυστραλός νομομαθής.
Εκτιμάται, ότι η υπόθεση θα επιστρέψει στο Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο εντός της εβδομάδας για περαιτέρω οδηγίες από την έδρα, πριν η προσφυγή εκδικαστεί από την ολομέλεια του δικαστηρίου.

Το όνομά του φιγουράρει στην τρίτη θέση των πλουσιότερων ομογενών της Αυστραλίας, είναι ιδιοκτήτης του πιο ακριβού σπιτιού στην ιστορία της Μελβούρνης και η αμύθητη περιουσία του ξεπερνάει τα 540.000.000 δολάρια! Ο Χάρης Σταμούλης, ο ελληνικής καταγωγής Κροίσος, με ρίζες από την Ήπειρο, είναι επικεφαλής του κολοσσού Stamoulis Group και ιδιοκτήτης του συγκροτήματος «Vogue» στην περιοχή Σάουθ Γιάρα της Μελβούρνης. Κατέχει, επίσης, τον ελληνικό ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό 3ΧΥ που εκπέμπει στην Αυστραλία, την εφημερίδα «Τα Νέα» που είναι ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλής στους ομογενείς της μακρινής ηπείρου, αλλά και ένα πολυτελές ξενοδοχείο στην Αθήνα, δείχνοντας έτοιμος να επενδύσει περαιτέρω στα πάτρια εδάφη.

Μπον βιβέρ, λάτρης της απόλυτης πολυτέλειας, άνθρωπος με όραμα και επιχειρηματική τόλμη, ο Χάρης Σταμούλης είναι φανερό πως δεν μπορεί να πει «όχι» σε οτιδήποτε μπορεί να φέρει το πρόθεμα «πιο», είτε πρόκειται για το πιο ακριβό σπίτι της Μελβούρνης είτε για το πιο ψηλό κτίριό της. Ο επιχειρηματίας, εξάλλου, λάτρης των πολυτελών κατοικιών στα ακριβά προάστια, έχει απασχολήσει δεκάδες φορές τον Τύπο, κυρίως για τις πολλών εκατομμυρίων ευρώ αγορές του που έχουν προκαλέσει σάλο!

Σύμφωνα με δημοσιεύματα του ξένου Τύπου, ο ίδιος φέρεται να δαπάνησε 54.000.000 δολάρια για την τεραστίων διαστάσεων έπαυλη (34.000 τ.μ.) που χτίζει στο αριστοκρατικό προάστιο Toorak της Μελβούρνης. Όπως λέγεται, έδωσε 24.000.000 δολάρια για την αγορά του οικοπέδου και ακόμη 30.000.000 δολάρια για την κατασκευή της έπαυλης, με τα ίδια δημοσιεύματα να κάνουν λόγο για την αγορά του «του ακριβότερου σπιτιού στην ιστορία της Μελβούρνης».

ΡΕΤΙΡΕ ΑΠΟ… ΧΡΥΣΟ

Μάλιστα, σύμφωνα με τις ίδιες πηγές, ο ίδιος και η σύζυγός του Βαλέντη έχουν θέσει προς πώληση το εντυπωσιακό ρετιρέ όπου ζουν, στην περιοχή St Kilda Road, αντί του ποσού των 15.000.000 δολαρίων. Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο ακριβά ρετιρέ της Αυστραλίας. Το ζευγάρι το 2006 είχε αγοράσει το διαμέρισμα που βρίσκεται στον 36ό όροφο του συγκροτήματος Royal Domain Tower αντί 5.540.000 δολαρίων, αλλά στη συνέχεια είχε ξοδέψει δεκάδες εκατομμύρια δολάρια προκειμένου να το διαμορφώσει όπως ακριβώς επιθυμούσε.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι μεγαλουργούν στο εξωτερικό, όπου διατηρούν και τις επιχειρήσεις τους, τα μέλη της οικογένειας Σταμούλη έχουν πάντα στο μυαλό τους την Ελλάδα και τρέφουν ιδιαίτερη αγάπη για τον τόπο γέννησης του αείμνηστου πατέρα τους. Άλλωστε για αρκετά χρόνια ήταν ιδιοκτήτες του νησιού Οξιά που βρίσκεται στο Ιόνιο Πέλαγος, μεταξύ Αστακού και Ιθάκης, το οποίο πλέον έχει περάσει στα χέρια του εμίρη του Κατάρ!

Παρά τα γραφειοκρατικά εμπόδια και τις δυσκολίες που έβαζαν φρένο στη μεταβίβαση του νησιού στη βασιλική οικογένεια του Κατάρ, το χρυσό deal έκλεισε αντί περίπου 5.000.000 ευρώ, όπως τουλάχιστον αναφέρουν οι πληροφορίες. Το ενδιαφέρον του Εμίρη του Κατάρ για την Οξιά είχε εκδηλωθεί προ ετών σε μια συνάντηση με την οικογένεια Σταμούλη.

ΤΟ ΠΡΟΣΥΜΦΩΝΟ

Κατά τη διάρκειά της είχε υπογραφεί ένα προσύμφωνο, σύμφωνα με το οποίο ο σεΐχης Χαμάντ Μπιν Χαλίφα Αλ Τάνι θα πλήρωνε 5.000.000 δολάρια για να αποκτήσει το νησί. Αφού ολοκληρώθηκαν οι χρονοβόρες διαδικασίες και έπεσαν οι τελικές υπογραφές από το Λιμενικό, από τη Διεύθυνση Φάρων και από το υπουργείο Γεωργίας, το πανέμορφο νησί του Ιονίου άλλαξε τελικά χέρια και πέρασε στην ιδιοκτησία του εμίρη του Κατάρ, γνωστού για την αγάπη του για τη χώρα μας!

Η Οξιά είναι ένα πευκόφυτο, βραχώδες νησάκι που διαθέτει τρία φυσικά λιμάνια, ενώ μεγάλο τμήμα της προστατεύεται ως μέρος του οικολογικού δικτύου Natura 2000. Διαθέτει αρκετές πανέμορφες παραλίες, ενώ στο βόρειο τμήμα του το υψόμετρο αγγίζει τα 430 μέτρα. Η αρχική τιμή πώλησης του νησιού ανερχόταν σε 6,9 εκατομμύρια δολάρια, ενώ ενδιαφέρον για την απόκτησή του είχαν εκφράσει πολλοί μεγιστάνες από την Ελλάδα, τη Ρωσία και την Αμερική.

ΖΩΗ ΣΑΝ ΠΑΡΑΜΥΘΙ

Η χρυσή ιστορία της οικογένειας Σταμούλη άρχισε γύρω στα μέσα του περασμένου αιώνα, όταν ο μόλις 12 ετών Σπύρος Σταμούλης από την Ήπειρο άφησε πίσω του την Ελλάδα και έριξε άγκυρα στην άλλη πλευρά του πλανήτη, στη μακρινή Αυστραλία, όπου λίγα χρόνια αργότερα έμελλε να χτίσει τη δική του παντοδύναμη αυτοκρατορία. Στα χρόνια που ακολούθησαν ο Σπύρος Σταμούλης κατάφερε να ξεχωρίσει για το ήθος και την εργατικότητά του, αναδείχθηκε ως ένα από τα πλέον επιφανή μέλη της ομογενειακής κοινότητας στη Μελβούρνη και πάλεψε σκληρά για να θέσει τους ακλόνητους θεμέλιους λίθους που στηρίζουν το σημερινό οικοδόμημα της πανίσχυρης οικογένειας Σταμούλη.

Συγκεκριμένα, παρά τις όποιες δυσκολίες και τα εμπόδια, ο Σπύρος Σταμούλης ίδρυσε την εταιρεία Gold Medal Soft Drinks, ενώ δραστηριοποιήθηκε στο χώρο των ακινήτων αλλά και των ΜΜΕ με το ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό 3XY και την εφημερίδα της Αυστραλίας «Τα Νέα». Το 2004 προχώρησε στην πώληση της επιχείρησης αναψυκτικών και στη συνέχεια επένδυσε τα χρήματα στον ιδιαίτερα επικερδή χώρο των ακινήτων.

Τολμηρός, δημιουργικός και πολυάσχολος, ο Σπύρος Σταμούλης δέθηκε στενά με τη νέα του πατρίδα, αλλά δεν ξέχασε ποτέ τη γενέτειρά του. Μιλούσε πάντα με θαυμασμό για την Ήπειρο και τους ανθρώπους της, τους οποίους δεν έπαψε ποτέ να στηρίζει με κάθε τρόπο. Ύστερα από πολλές προσπάθειες κατάφερε να κάνει πραγματικότητα το όνειρο της ζωής του, το Ελληνικό Μουσείο Μελβούρνης, που σήμερα τελεί υπό την αιγίδα του Ιδρύματος «Ναυσικά Σταμούλη» και στεγάζεται στο κτίριο του πρώην Νομισματοκοπείου, στο 280 William Street, στο κέντρο της Μελβούρνης. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως στο φουαγέ του μουσείου βρίσκεται κρεμασμένο σε περίοπτη θέση ένα πορτρέτο της κόρης του Ναυσικάς, που έφυγε από τη ζωή σε ηλικία μόλις 24 ετών, γεγονός που συντέλεσε ιδιαίτερα στη ραγδαία επιδείνωση της υγείας του.
Το 2007, σε ηλικία 69 ετών και έπειτα από γενναία και πολυετή μάχη με την επάρατη νόσο, ο Σπύρος Σταμούλης έφυγε από τη ζωή αφήνοντας πίσω του έναν επιχειρηματικό κολοσσό που σήμερα διοικείται από τους συνεχιστές της δυναστείας, τον Χάρι και τη Μελίνα Σταμούλη.

ΠΡΟΤΖΕΚΤ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΠΙΟ ΨΗΛΟ ΚΤΙΡΙΟ ΣΤΗ ΜΕΛΒΟΥΡΝΗ

Το πάθος του Χάρη Σταμούλη για τα πολυτελή και ιδιαίτερα εντυπωσιακά κτίρια είναι αδιαμφισβήτητο και ο ίδιος δεν έχει κρύψει ποτέ το θαυμασμό του γι’ αυτά. Μάλιστα ο επικεφαλής της εταιρίας Stamoulis Group σκόπευε να χτίσει τον ψηλότερο ουρανοξύστη της Αυστραλίας, αλλά και ολόκληρου του νότιου ημισφαιρίου της Γης. Ο Χάρης Σταμούλης σκόπευε να κατασκευάσει ένα θεόρατο κτίριο, το ύψος του οποίου θα άγγιζε τα 404 μέτρα και θα ήταν μεγαλύτερο από αυτό του ουρανοξύστη Australia 108 που χτίζεται στη Μελβούρνη από τον ομογενή αρχιτέκτονα Νώντα Κατσαλίδη. Μάλιστα, το ψηλότερο κτίριο της Μελβούρνης και του νότιου ημισφαιρίου έως σήμερα είναι ο πύργος «Εύρηκα» που έχει σχεδιαστεί από τον Νώντα Κατσαλίδη.

Τα φιλόδοξα σχέδια του Χάρη Σταμούλη για την ανέγερση του πανύψηλου πύργου στην περιοχή Κόλινς Στριτ, στο κέντρο της Μελβούρνης, δεν βρήκαν σύμφωνο τον δήμαρχο της πόλης, που εξέφρασε έντονες αντιρρήσεις τονίζοντας πως «θα ρίξει τη σκιά του στις όχθες του ποταμού Γιάρα και στην περιοχή Σάουθμπανκ». Έτσι η Stamoulis Property Group αναγκάστηκε να… χαμηλώσει τα στάνταρ της και άρχισε να χτίζει τον πύργο 568 Collins περιορίζοντας το ύψος του στα 224 μέτρα. Ο ουρανοξύστης των 68 ορόφων αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί το 2015.

The Voice Australia’s finalist Frank Lakoudis went back to school to pay a vist, bringing with him Good Charlotte star Joel Madden.

The Voice Australia’s finalist Frank Lakoudis took some time out of his busy schedule to visit his school, St Euphemia Greek Orthodox College in Bankstown, before the finals of the TV show.

He went back to school to the joy of hundreds of St Euphemia’s students – and brought with him a star visitor, his coach Joel Madden.

Lakoudis, who graduated from the school in 2008, introduced Madden to teachers and students in what was a homecoming session as part of a package for the grand final show last Monday.

Though the support of his community and school didn’t help Lakoudis win the competition on Monday, his mentor Madden was overwhelmed by the support for his finalist.

“I felt real love in there and there’s a whole community behind Frank,” Madden said.

“Frank is living proof that you can do what you want to do. He has the best attitude of any artist I’ve worked with in the music industry,” Madden said during the Q&A session with students.

School principal Harry Hirakis showed a number of photos of Lakoudis during his school days to everyone in the hall and shared memories of his musical beginnings.

“The definition of wow factor now reads Frank Lakoudis under it,” Mr Hirakis said.

“At the Year 12 dinner in 2008, I told the students that the rest of the world awaits your presence and that is happening for Frank.”
