Στο Geelong της Βικτώριας

Τρεις νεαρές Μουσουλμάνες δέχτηκαν επίθεση από μια ομάδα αγνώστων ατόμων σε περιοχή της πόλης Geelong της Βικτώριας.

Τα κορίτσια ηλικίας 11, 12 και 15 ετών βρίσκονταν σε ένα πάρκο στην οδό Sparks την περασμένη Τετάρτη απόγευμα.

Δέκα άτομα, αγόρια και κορίτσια, ηλικίας από 7 εώς 16 ετών, πλησίασαν τις νεαρές, χρησιμοποίησαν ρατσιστικά υβρεολόγιο και αφαίρεσαν τις μουσουλμανικές μαντίδες από τα κεφάλια τους.

Η συμμορία γρονθοκόπησε τις νεαρές και κατέστρεψε τα τηλέφωνά τους όταν εκείνες προσπάθησαν να καλέσουν την αστυνομία.

Η πρόεδρος της οργάνωσης “Islamophobia Register Australia”, Mariam Veiszadeh, που έφερε το θέμα στην επικαιρότητα, δήλωσε ότι υπάρχουν πολλά παρόμοια περιστατικά που δεν βλέπουν το φως της δημοσιότητας.

Οι νεαρές Μουσουλμάνες τραυμτίστηκαν ευτυχώς ελαφρά από το βίαιο περιστατικό και η αστυνομία της Βικτώριας συνεχίζει τις έρευνες για τον εντοπισμό των μελών της ομάδας.

Σοβαρές ανησυχίες προκαλεί το γεγονός ότι η οικονομία της Αυστραλίας κατέχει τη δεύτερη θέση μεταξύ των επτά πλέον ευάλωτων οικονομιών του κόσμου.

Σοβαρές ανησυχίες προκαλεί το γεγονός ότι η Αυστραλία κατέχει τη δεύτερη θέση μεταξύ των επτά πλέον ευάλωτων χωρών του κόσμου που οι πολίτες τους συσσωρεύουν χρέη, κυρίως εξαιτίας των χαμηλών επιτοκίων για να αγοράσουν το σπίτι των ονείρων τους, να επενδύσουν σε ακίνητα, μετοχές ή για να αποκτήσουν απλώς καταναλωτικά αγαθά.

Όλα αυτά, όμως, σ’ ένα περιβάλλον όπου οι μισθοί δεν ακολουθούν τους ίδιους ανοδικούς ρυθμούς και η παγκόσμια οικονομία δεν είναι ακριβώς ανθηρή.

Επ’ αυτού, ο πρώην αναπληρωτής καθηγητής Οικονομικών του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικού Σίδνεϊ, Steve Keen, εκτιμά ότι οι ρυθμοί του ιδιωτικού χρέους θυμίζουν αυτούς της ΗΠΑ πριν από την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση του 2007-2008. Ρυθμοί οι οποίοι σε κάποιο στάδιο δεν θα είναι εφικτό να συγκρατηθούν.

Η Αυστραλία, η οποία έχει αποφύγει την οικονομική κρίση για 24 χρόνια, περνώντας ανώδυνα ακόμη και αυτήν την παγκόσμια κρίση του 2008, κυρίως εξαιτίας του μεταλλευτικού της πλούτου και του “φιλιού ζωής” των $900 εκατ. που διοχέτευσε ο τότε πρωθυπουργός, Kevin Rudd, στην οικονομία, δεν φαίνεται να είναι στην ίδια προνομιούχα θέση σήμερα, εκτιμά ο Dr. Keen.

MΑΥΡΕΣ ΠΡΟΒΛΕΨΕΙΣ

Η μέρα που θα σταματήσει η ανοδική πορεία της πίστωσης δε γίνεται να μετατεθεί επ’ άπειρον, εκτιμά ο κορυφαίος οικονομολόγος.

“Και όταν θα φθάσει αυτή η χρονική στιγμή για την Αυστραλία, η χώρα απλώς θα εισέλθει στην παγκόσμια κατηγορία των πληγέντων οικονομιών”.

Ο ίδιος κατατάσσει την Κίνα πρώτη στην κατηγορία αυτή, ακολουθούμενη από την Αυστραλία, τη Σουηδία, το Χονγκ Κονγκ, τη Νότια Κορέα, τον Καναδά και τη Νορβηγία.

Ο ίδιος εκτιμά ότι δεν μπορεί κανείς να προβλέψει με ακρίβεια πότε θα έλθει το πλήγμα, δεδομένου ότι αυτό εξαρτάται από την πρόθεση του ιδιωτικού φορέα να δανειστεί από τις τράπεζες και από την απόφαση των τραπεζών να σταματήσουν να προσφέρουν τα ζητούμενα δάνεια.

Προσθέτει, εντούτοις, ότι “η έλευση της ημέρας που η πιστωτική πορεία μοιραία θα ανακοπεί, δεν γίνεται να αναβληθεί επ’ άπειρον”.

ΣΕΙΕΤΑΙ Η ΚΤΗΜΑΤΑΓΟΡΑ

Σοβαρές δονήσεις, παρατηρείται, ότι δέχεται ο χώρος της κτηματαγοράς, ιδιαίτερα των διαμερισμάτων που βρίσκονται στο κέντρο της πόλης ή πλησίον αυτού.

Με λίγες εξαιρέσεις, όπου διαμερίσματα έχουν πωληθεί σε υψηλότερη τιμή από αυτή που είχαν αγοραστεί, πολλά μεταπωλήθηκαν μέχρι και 30% χαμηλότερα από την τιμή που είχαν αγοραστεί από το σχέδιο.

Ενδεικτικά αναφέρεται συγκρότημα διαμερισμάτων που βρίσκεται στο 27 Little Collins St. όπου υπάρχουν 171 διαμερίσματα σε 32 ορόφους, πάνω από το ξενοδοχείο Sheraton.

Εκεί, ένα διαμέρισμα τριών υπνοδωματίων, 140 τετραγωνικώνμέτρων, πωλήθηκε τον περασμένο Αύγουστο $1.565.000, δηλαδή κατά 29% χαμηλότερα από την τιμή των $2.195.000 που είχε αγοραστεί τον Νοέμβριο του 2010.

Στο ίδιο συγκρότημα, διαμέρισμα δύο υπνοδωματίων που αγοράστηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2014 προς $1.320.000, πουλήθηκε τον περασμένο Απρίλιο αντί $1.075.000, χάνοντας δηλαδή 23% από την αξία του μέσα σ’ ένα χρόνο.

Ωστόσο, είναι γεγονός ότι η τάση ανέγερσης νέων διαμερισμάτων, κυρίως στο κέντρο της πόλης που κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, οδηγεί εδώ και καιρό στο συμπέρασμα ότι θα πέσουν οι τιμές τους.

Αρκεί να πούμε ότι από τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο υπάρχουν στο κέντρο 20.000 διαμερίσματα υπό ανέγερση, ενώ για 19.000 έχει εγκριθεί η κατασκευή τους και 30.000 περιμένουν τη σχετική έγκριση.

«Όποιος αγόρασε διαμέρισμα από το σχέδιο με προοπτική να το μεταπωλήσει μέσα σε δύο χρόνια, θα πρέπει να υπολογίσει πτώση της τάξης του 10% από το ποσό της αγοράς» εκτιμά ο οικονομικός αναλυτής, Άντζι Ζυγομάνης, προσθέτοντας ότι η πτώση της τιμής των διαμερισμάτων θα συνεχιστεί όσο υπάρχει υπερπροσφορά και τα επιτόκια εξακολουθούν να είναι χαμηλά.

Στο κέντρο της πόλης, αναλυτικά στοιχεία δείχνουν ότι 197 ακίνητα, σε μικρό διάστημα έχασαν από την αξία τους κατά μέσο όρο $51.272 ή 9,15%.

Σε μια περίπτωση, διαμέρισμα δύο υπνοδωματίων που αγοράστηκε τον Αύγουστο του 2015 αντί $740.000, η σημερινή του αξία εκτιμήθηκε στις $600.000 -πτώση κατά 23%- μετά από 16 μέρες.

Σε αυτό το κλίμα, δημιουργούνται σοβαρές ανησυχίες σ’ εκείνους που έχουν επενδύσει σ’ αυτόν το χώρο, συνάπτοντας χαμηλότοκα δάνεια και με εισόδημα το οποίο δεν έχει αυξητικές τάσεις.

Ο ομογενής γερουσιαστής

Εκτιμάται ότι το κόμμα του ομογενή γερουσιαστή θα πάρει τη θέση των Πρασίνων αν ο Συνασπισμός κερδίσει τις επόμενες εκλογές

Ο ομογενής γερουσιαστής, Νίκος Ξενοφών, και το κόμμα του, ίσως αναδειχθούν οι «μεγάλοι» νικητές των επόμενων εκλογών αν επαληθευτούν οι εκτιμήσεις του διακεκριμένου και βετεράνου αναλυτή του εκλογικού αποτελέσματος, δημοσιογράφου, Anthony Green.

Όπως ανέφερε ο δημοσιογράφος του κρατικού δικτύου ABC, το γεγονός ότι οι πρόωρες εκλογές θα προκηρυχθούν μετά από την ταυτόχρονη διάλυση και των δύο σωμάτων Βουλής και Γερουσίας, σημαίνει ότι κατά τις επόμενες εκλογές, οι ψηφοφόροι θα πρέπει να εκλέξουν όλους τους γερουσιαστές. Αυτό, σε συνδυασμό με τις πρόσφατες αλλαγές στον τρόπο εκλογής των γερουσιαστών, σύμφωνα με τον κ. Green, ευνοεί το κόμμα του Νίκου Ξενοφώντα, και αν τελικά επανέλθει στην εξουσία ο Συνασπισμός, τότε το κόμμα του ομογενή θα αναδειχθεί ως αυτό που θα έχει ρυθμιστικό ρόλο στη διακυβέρνηση της χώρας, ρόλο που μέχρι τώρα είχε το κόμμα των Πρασίνων.

Ο κ. Green ανέφερε ότι η «ομάδα του Νίκου Ξενοφώντα» (όνομα του κόμματος του ομογενή γερουσιαστή) δεν αποκλείεται να καταφέρει να εκλέξει ακόμα και τέσσερις γερουσιαστές σε όλη την επικράτεια. Τόνισε παράλληλα ότι αν τελικά οι κάλπες αναδείξουν το Εργατικό Κόμμα ως νικητή των εκλογών τότε «η ομάδα» του δεν θα καταφέρει να αποκτήσει τον συγκεκριμένο ρόλο.

Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα πρόσφατης δημοσκόπησης που διενεργήθηκε στις Πολιτείες της Νότιας Αυστραλίας και του Queensland όπου τόσο ο Νίκος Ξενοφών όσο και το Palmer United Party κατεβάζουν υποψηφίους, το Εργατικό Κόμμα και οι Πράσινοι συγκεντρώνουν το πολύ 37 έδρες στη Γερουσία. Προκειμένου τα δύο κόμματα, Πράσινοι και Εργατικό, να μπορούν να μπλοκάρουν νομοσχέδια μίας κυβέρνησης Συνασπισμού στη Γερουσία, χρειάζονται 39 έδρες. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτής της δημοσκόπησης συμφωνούν με αυτά των εσωτερικών δημοσκοπήσεων των κομμάτων που σύμφωνα με άρθρο της ‘Financial Review’, «δείχνουν» ότι ο Συνασπισμός δεν θα καταφέρει να συγκεντρώσει περισσότερες από 35 έδρες. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ακόμα και αν ο Συνασπισμός επανέλθει στην εξουσία μετά τις επόμενες εκλογές, δεν θα καταφέρει να εξασφαλίσει την απαραίτητη πλειοψηφία στη Γερουσία.

Σύμφωνα με τον ισχύοντα νόμο, υπό κανονικές συνθήκες ο κάθε υποψήφιος χρειάζεται να συγκεντρώσει ποσοστό 14,29% για να καταφέρει να καταλάβει μία από τις έξι έδρες της Γερουσίας που είναι υπό διεκδίκηση. Επειδή, όμως, αναμένεται οι εκλογές να προκηρυχθούν μετά από ταυτόχρονη διάλυση Βουλής και Γερουσίας ο αριθμός των εδρών που τα μικρά κόμματα θα διεκδικήσουν είναι διπλάσιος, δηλαδή οι έδρες είναι 12 και το ποσοστό που χρειάζεται να συγκεντρώσει ο κάθε υποψήφιος είναι μόλις 7,69%.

Εν τω μεταξύ, ο κ. Green αναφερόμενος στις προοπτικές επανεκλογής των δύο γερουσιαστών, της Jacqui Lambie και του Glenn Lazarus, που εκλέχθηκαν στις προηγούμενες εκλογές με το Palmer United Party και στη συνέχεια ανεξαρτητοποιήθηκαν, είπε ότι το πιθανότερο είναι αυτοί να επανεκλεγούν.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι η κυβέρνηση Malcolm Turnbull, συνεχίζει να προηγείται του Εργατικού Κόμματος στην τελευταία δημοσκόπηση κατά δύο ποσοστιαίες μονάδες.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι η κυβέρνηση Malcolm Turnbull, συνεχίζει να προηγείται του Εργατικού Κόμματος στην τελευταία δημοσκόπηση κατά δύο ποσοστιαίες μονάδες, η εικόνα για το τι θα συμβεί τις επόμενες εκλογές παραμένει θολή.

Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της τελευταίας δημοσκόπησης του γνωστού οργανισμού Newspoll για λογαριασμό της εφημερίδας «The Australian», αν είχαν γίνει οι ομοσπονδιακές εκλογές το περασμένο Σάββατο, ο συνασπισμός Φιλελευθέρων-Εθνικών θα είχε κερδίσει και θα σχημάτιζε κυβέρνηση με μειωμένη πλειοψηφία σε σχέση με τις εκλογές της 7ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2013.

Τα αποτελέσματα της σφυγμομέτρησης δείχνουν ότι η κυβέρνηση Turnbull συγκέντρωσε το 44% των ψήφων πρώτης προτίμησης, σε σχέση με 45,6% που είχε πάρει τις προηγούμενες εκλογές και το Εργατικό Κόμμα 34% σε σχέση με το 33,3% που είχε πάρει στις εκλογές του 2013.

Μετά τη καταμέτρηση και των δεύτερων προτιμήσεων, ο κυβερνητικός συνασπισμός συγκέντρωσε το 51% και το Εργατικό Κόμμα 49%.

Στην ερώτηση για το ποιoν θεωρείτε καταλληλότερο για πρωθυπουργό το 55% των ψηφοφόρων τάχθηκε υπέρ του σημερινού πρωθυπουργού και το 21% υπέρ του αρχηγού της αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten.

Να σημειώσουμε εδώ, ότι η δημοτικότητα του Malcolm Turnbull, μειώθηκε κατά έξι ποσοστιαίες μονάδες από τότε που ανέλαβε την πρωθυπουργία, ενώ, η δημοτικότητα του Bill Shorten το ίδιο διάστημα αυξήθηκε κατά τέσσερις ποσοστιαίες μονάδες, από το 17% σε 21%.

Παρά τα στοιχεία της σφυγμομέτρησης, όμως, η κατάσταση παραμένει ρευστή αφού ο συντηρητικός συνασπισμός συνεχίζει να χάνει έδαφος σε ορισμένες Πολιτείες και, κυρίως, στη Βικτώρια και το Κουίνσλαντ, όπου σημαντικός αριθμός ψηφοφόρων στέφεται προς τους Πράσινους, που συνεχίζουν να κερδίζουν έδαφος εις βάρος και των δύο μεγάλων κομμάτων στις δύο προαναφερόμενες Πολιτείες.

Υπέρ των προσφύγων της Ελλάδας

Έρανος υπέρ των προσφύγων της Ελλάδας θα γίνει την Κυριακή, 10 Απριλίου, σε όλους τους ελληνορθόδοξους ναούς της Αυστραλίας, με εντολή του αρχιεπισκόπου κ. Στυλιανού.

Με εγκύκλιό του προς του ιερείς και τα Διοικητικά Συμβούλια των ενοριών και κοινοτήτων της Αρχιεπισκοπής ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος αναφέρει μεταξύ άλλων:

«Αγαπητοί μου,

Ασφαλώς έχετε παρακολουθήσει και πληροφορηθεί από τα Μέσα Γενικής Ενημερώσεως ότι, κατά την επικρατήσασα τελευταίως οικονομικήν εξαθλίωσιν εις την Γενέτειραν και τον συνωστισμό τεραστίου αριθμού προσφύγων και άλλων δεινοπαθούντων μεταναστών, η Εκκλησία, δια καθαρώς ανθρωπιστικούς λόγους, παρέχει συνεχώς τας πρώτας βοήθειας (εις ρουχισμόν, είδη διατροφής, ιδίως κονσερβών).

Επειδή, όπως πάντοτε, η Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή μας δεν είναι δυνατόν να αδιαφορήσει προ της τοιαύτης καταστάσεως, παρακαλούνται θερμότατα οι πιστοί μας να συντρέξουν κατά δύναμιν εις τον Ειδικόν Δίσκον ο οποίος θα περιαχθεί εις τούς Ιερούς Ναούς μας την Κυριακήν, 10ην Απριλίου 2016.

The Australian Hellenic community of Sydney prepares 400 marble plaques to mark the Hellenic-Anzac relationship.

It was standing room only in the Strangers’ Room of Parliament House of NSW for the function of the Consulate-General for the 195th anniversary of the War of Independence. Speakers were NSW Premier Mike Baird MP, the Leader of the Opposition Luke Foley MP and Consul-General Dr Stavros Kyrimis.

Among the audience was a large number of parliamentarians of all parties, including Eleni Pettinos MP (Liberal; Miranda), Sophie Cotsis MLC (ALP), Courtney Houssos MLC (ALP) and Steve Kamper (ALP; Rockdale), along with Philhellenes David Elliott (Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and chair of the NSW-Hellas Parliamentary Friendship Group), David Clarke MLC (Liberal) and the Rev. Fred Nile MLC (Christian Democrats).

The simple celebration included an orchestral ensemble and the Greek Orthodox Christian Society Choir, who performed the songs Exodus from Messolonghi, 40 Pallikaria, Poune ta Hronia and Aprili mou.

Rabbi Dr Dovid Slaven and Mr Amir Salem, from Alexandria, Egypt, flawlessly performed MC duties, informing the assembly about the Hellenic War of Independence (1821-1829), about the first Hellenes of Australia who were fighters in the war, and about the diachronic contributions of Hellenic civilisation through democracy, literature and the arts.

The highlight of the event was the announcement by the consul-general that the Australian Hellenic community of Sydney is preparing 400 marble plaques with bilingual inscriptions related to Hellenism and Anzac.

As 2016 marks the Centenary of the Anzacs on the Macedonian Front (1916) and the 75th anniversary of the 1941 Greek Campaign, the plaques are another marker of the Hellenic-Anzac relationship.

They are replicas of an inscription of a war memorial of the ancient Athenians, erected in 447BC to the memory of their fallen during expeditions to the Thracian Chersonese – modern Gallipoli. The stele bears the names of the fallen hoplites and the following inscription:

[Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. They brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.]

Under the leadership of the Hellenic Village organisation (formerly the Federation of Hellenic Philanthropic Associations, under the presidency of John Kallimanis), 400 replicas in marble will be installed in public spaces across New South Wales: museums, clubs, public service offices, and schools.

The stele once stood in the section of the ancient Kerameikos Cemetery, towards Akademias Platonos Street, north of the present-day Church of the Holy Trinity. That space was the military cemetery of ancient Athens, known as the ‘Demosion Sema’. It has been at the National Epigraphic Museum in Athens since 1881.

In 1932 the Australian poet and Classical Greek scholar Christopher Brennan brought the original inscription to the attention of his friend, solicitor Robert Innes Kay. Kay then brought it to the attention of Australian Official Historian CEW Bean.

All three men immediately recognised how apt this ancient Hellenic inscription related to the Anzacs – young men fighting and dying on the same strip of ground more than 2,400 years apart.

John Treloar, director of the Australian War Memorial (then under construction), arranged to have a plaster cast of the inscription made through the offices of Lieutenant Colonel Cyril Hughes. He worked with the Imperial War Graves Commission in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Initially Hughes acquired a ‘squeeze’ – an impression made of thick paper. However, as this would not make a satisfactory display item, Treloar asked him to acquire a plaster cast for the memorial.

In November and December 1935, a plaster cast was made and received by the memorial in February 1936. It was initially housed in Melbourne and later in Sydney. It was not displayed in the memorial’s permanent building in Canberra until 1954.

The cast was on display in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Valour for some time, but has since been set into a wall in the administration area of the memorial complex, out of the public view.

Through the Hellenic Village organisation under the presidency of John Kallimanis, this neglected aspect of Hellenism in the Antipodes is returning to the light.

Private, Catholic and public schools are reducing their reliance on laptops and tablets following a damning international assessment and concerns over the impact of social media on learning.

“The reality is that technology is doing more harm than good in our schools today,” the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s education chief Andreas Schleicher told world leaders at a global education forum this month.

Last week, John Vallance, the principal of one of Sydney’s most expensive private schools, Sydney Grammar, said that laptops were not necessary in class and that more traditional teaching methods were more effective.

Schools in the Catholic sector are also moving away from laptop centred learning after an OECD report found that countries which have invested heavily in education technology have seen no noticeable improvement in their performances in results for reading, mathematics or science.

Australia has spent $2.4 billion putting laptops in the bags of as many schoolchildren as possible through the Digital Education Revolution of the Rudd and Gillard governments.

“Education is a bit like the stock market, it overshoots.” said St Paul’s Catholic College principal Mark Baker. “Computers have been oversold and there is no evidence that it improve outcomes. Giving out laptops was the educational equivalent of putting pink batts in people’s roofs”.

Mr Baker said every school in NSW has become a Google or an Apple school. “If I put McDonald’s signs all over the school saying McDonald’s was bringing you education, there would be an outcry.”

The Manly school has banned laptops for one day a week in an effort to get pupils out onto the sporting field and away from LCD screens. “If you say that at an education meeting you are branded as an educational dinosaur,” the principal of 17 years told Fairfax Media.

Public school Hunters Hill High also has a relaxed approach to laptop based learning, parents say, with students able to opt for textbooks in the classroom and typing up assessments at home, in line with Department of Education policy that allows decisions around technology to be made at a school level.

While laptops have brought a plethora of resources to the fingertips of students, educators remain concerned about their use as tools of distraction.

“The problem is maturity,” Mr Baker said. “They are very good at using technology for social interaction but not for learning.”

A new survey of 1000 young adults has found that 39 per cent obsessively compare their life and achievements to others on social media, according to the Optus Digital Thumbprint program.

Mother of three Katrina Chambers said that removing the technology from parts of the day was about teaching children to switch off.

“They can get really uptight about what everyone else is doing online, my eldest can get a bit agitated,” said Mrs Chambers, who has three boys aged under 14.

“You can tell them they can’t go out but then their Snapchat next day is full of 15 things that they missed out on.”

Mr Baker believes that removing the centrality of the laptop in the classroom might be the first step in getting that balance back.

“Parents expect schools to have the technology,” he said. “The issue is the appropriateness. Anyone who says we should stop using textbooks is peddling dangerous nonsense.”

Education leaders agree: “If we want our children to be smarter than a smartphone then we have to think harder,” Mr Schleicher said.

NEIGHBOURS say they went to the aid of East Maitland man Stephen MacLeod the night he was allegedly fatally wounded because they heard “thumping and banging’’ on the walls and yelling at about 4am.

Karen Morris said she could make out the voice of her long-time next door neighbour, Caron Anne Wells, saying “get the c—t out of here”, over and over again.

She entered the house and saw Mr MacLeod lying on his back in a hallway, with facial injuries. After being told to ‘mind her own business’ she said she saw Ms Wells kick Mr MacLeod in the back of the head.
“It was like a ‘you’re a piece of shit’ kick,” Ms Morris told the Newcastle Supreme Court on
Thursday.
Ms Wells is one of three people charged with the murder of Mr Macleod who died on March 26, 2014, ten days after that incident on that Sunday March 16, 2014.

Her son, Kris Mitchison, and his friend, Ricky Whelan, also stand accused of murder over Mr MacLeod’s death in what the prosecution says was a “pay back’ on Mr MacLeod for injuries he visited upon Ms Wells.

Ms Morris, who had lived next door to Ms Wells for about 20 years in Kenneth Street, said her neighbours had a “fiery” relationship involving heated arguments on an almost weekly basis.

The police were often called to intervene, she said. She said Ms Wells was a drunk who “gave as good as she got”. “They were both as bad as each other,” she said.

Mr MacLeod was moaning in pain and distress as he lay on the ground in the moments before he was kicked, Ms Morris said.
“She put the boot in, basically,” Ms Morris said, of Ms Wells actions.
She later told the court that she did not see the kick connect with Mr MacLeod’s head but she saw his head snap back in response.

She broke down crying when she described seeing him two days later, saying one eye was bulging out of his head, and the pupil was “moving all about the place uncontrollably”.
The trial, before Justice Robert Hulme, continues.

Greek soccer’s ban from all international competitions due to the government’s suspension of the Greek Cup appears closer than ever after the fruitless meeting Deputy Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis had with a common delegation from the international and European soccer-governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA, in Athens on Wednesday.

Kontonis sticks to his decision to suspend the competition, following fan clashes with police that had the PAOK vs Olympiakos game in Thessaloniki abandoned a month ago, although it is the verdict of the Council of State next week that will eventually determine the continuation or not of the tournament.

“There was no agreement, but we were told that the federation is willing to withdraw its case from the Council of State. The government and the ministry are not afraid of the CoS decision,” said Kontonis.

The head of the international federations’ delegation, Cypriot Costakis Koutsokoumnis threatened that the national team and the clubs would be excluded from all international competitions, but showed a speck of optimism saying he hoped the minister would be given a one-week period to reverse his decision, instead of Friday’s deadline. The Council of State will hear the case of the Cup, brought by the Greek federation, on April 5.

“The Cup will have to restart by April 1. Apparently, this will not be implemented. We will report what happened to the executive body of FIFA and it will make its decisions,” Koutsokoumnis, also the head of the Cypriot federation, said after Wednesday’s meeting at the General Secretariat for Sports.

“I hope a week is given for the minister to revise [his decision], otherwise the news will not be good. FIFA will see the Hellenic Football Federation out … If the Cup does not start and the federation is banned, then there will be no national team or clubs in international competitions, nor will Greek officials be able to participate in international institutions and meetings. Greece will also lose a team in the Europa League.”

It is reminded that the new general secretary of UEFA, Theodoros Theodoridis, is Greek.

He went on to propose that the Cup be played behind closed doors and with foreign referees, saying: “We could arrange for a foreign referee if the teams want that. In out view that would be enough to justify the lifting of the decision. The minister will discuss that, but he awaits to see [some progress] from the federation, too.”

Kontonis tried to rid the government of the responsibility for what is dubbed “soccer’s Grexit”, putting the blame squarely on the federation: “The FIFA decision will concern the exit of the federation, which has begun all this process. The problem can be resolved by the federation itself, it should take the initiatives for a rotten situation to come to an end. The government cannot impose its will on it. The problem is in its hands and if it wants it can resolve it in a very, very small period of time.”

Koutsokoumnis added that FIFA would understand it if the government decided to stop all competitions including the league (and not just the Cup), as that would have been on the grounds of social unrest. Kontonis commented that “when you hear representatives of the international federations saying that maybe the league should be suspended too, or that foreign referees should come, this constitutes acceptance of what we have pointed out.”

The head of the Greek federation, Giorgos Gkirtzikis said: “We are awaiting developments. If only it depended on me for the issue to be resolved…”
