Aυξάνεται ο αριθμός εκείνων που επιλέγουν να μιλούν μια άλλη γλώσσα πλην της αγγλικής στο σπίτι τους.

Σταθερά πολυγλωσσική φαίνεται να παραμένει η Αυστραλία και, μάλιστα, με αυξητικές τάσεις στον αριθμό εκείνων που επιλέγουν να μιλούν μια άλλη γλώσσα πλην της αγγλικής στο σπίτι τους.

Η Μελβούρνη μπορεί, πλέον, δικαίως να περηφανεύεται για την πολυγλωσσία της και που οι πάλαι ποτέ κάτοικοί της θα το έβρισκαν δύσκολο να την αναγνωρίσουν.
Σύμφωνα με ανάλυση του Fairfax Media, 200.000 περισσότεροι Μελβουρνιώτες μιλούν στο σπίτι τους μια άλλη γλώσσα -εκτός της αγγλικής- από ό,τι πριν μια δεκαετία.
Στο 6% των προαστίων της Μελβούρνης πάνω από το 50% των κατοίκων μιλούν μια άλλη γλώσσα εκτός της αγγλικής, σε επτά δε από αυτά τα προάστια η αγγλική δεν είναι η κύρια ομιλούμενη γλώσσα.

Στα τέσσερα από αυτά, Braybrook, Sunshine North, Cairnlea και Sunshine η γλώσσα που ομιλείται περισσότερο είναι η βιετναμέζικη.
Σύμφωνα με στατιστικά στοιχεία, στο Campbellfield, βόρεια της Μελβούρνης, 1.494 άτομα μιλούν την αραβική και 985 την αγγλική.
Περίπου το 80% των κατοίκων στην περιοχή αυτή μιλούν μια άλλη γλώσσα εκτός της αγγλικής στο σπίτι, ποσοστό που συμβαίνει να είναι το υψηλότερο στη Βικτώρια.
Στο γειτονικό Dallas και στο Meadow Heights η γλώσσα που υπερισχύει είναι η τουρκική, ενώ παρεμφερείς διάλεκτοι ομιλούνται σε μεγάλη έκταση, με το ένα έκτο του πληθυσμού και στα δύο προάστια να μιλούν την αραβική.

Εκείνο που παρατηρείται είναι ότι, ενώ πολλοί ενήλικες νεοφερμένοι δεν μιλούν την αγγλική, τα παιδιά τους εξοικειώνονται εύκολα με την αγγλική και πολύ συχνά μιλούν άνετα και τις δύο γλώσσες, τη μητρική και την ντόπια.

Ας σημειωθεί ότι η αραβική είναι είναι η έκτη, κατά σειρά, περισσότερο ομιλούμενη γλώσσα στη Μελβούρνη, μετά την ελληνική, την ιταλική, την κινέζικη, τη βιετναμέζικη και την καντονέζικη.

Ο ερευνητής πληθυσμιακών τάσεων, Bob Birrell, από το Monash University, εκτιμά ότι οικονομικά κίνητρα ενδέχεται να συντείνουν στη συγκέντρωση ορισμένων εθνοτικών ομάδων σε συγκεκριμένες περιοχές.

«Καθώς ο πληθυσμός της Μελβούρνης αυξάνεται αλματωδώς και οι τιμές των σπιτιών σημειώνουν ανοδικές τάσεις, οι χαμηλοεισοδηματίες και οι νεομετανάστες, δεν έχουν άλλη επιλογή παρά να κατοικήσουν σε περιοχές χαμηλού σχετικά κόστους κυρίως στα εξωτερικά προάστια.
Στις τάσεις αυτές συντείνει, επίσης, το γεγονός ότι το χάσμα μεταξύ πλουσίων και φτωχών διευρύνεται.

Ο ίδιος θα προσθέσει ότι η συγκέντρωση συγκεκριμένων εθνοτικών ομάδων οφείλεται και σε πολιτιστικούς παράγοντες.

Υπάρχουν, βέβαια, οι περιπτώσεις που πάρα πολλοί, εθνοτικής καταγωγής, τη μέρα μιλούν αγγλικά στη δουλειά και το βράδυ τη μητρική τους γλώσσα στο σπίτι.
Στην ελληνική παροικία είναι γνωστό το φαινόμενο τα παιδιά τρίτης και δεύτερης γενιάς να μιλούν αγγλικά στους γονείς και ελληνικά στους παππούδες και γιαγιάδες.

Η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας και η Οργανωτική Επιτροπή του 33ου Ελληνικού Φεστιβάλ Σίδνεϊ καλεί όλα τα ενδιαφερόμενα μέρη να υποβάλουν τις προτάσεις τους, για την εξέταση δυνατότητας ενσωμάτωσης εις το πολιτιστικό πρόγραμμα εκδηλώσεων του Ελληνικού Φεστιβάλ Σίδνεϊ 2015.

Το Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ Σίδνεϊ 2015 θα ανοίξει την αυλαία του στο Darling Harbour στις 14-15 Φεβρουαρίου και θα λήξει αρχές Απριλίου, με πλήθος πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων κατά τον Μάρτιο σε διάφορους χώρους σε όλο το Σίδνεϊ.

Το Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ Σίδνεϊ δέχεται αιτήσεις και εκδηλώσεις ενδιαφέροντος από όλες τις αυστραλιανές, ελληνικές και ελληνοαυστραλιανές τέχνες και πολιτιστικές κοινότητες με συνδέσεις στον αρχαίο, μεσαιωνικό, μοντέρνο και σύγχρονο ελληνικό πολιτισμό.

Προτάσεις για τις εκδηλώσεις ζητούνται να γίνουν από όλους τους καλλιτέχνες και τις ομάδες που εμπλέκονται στους τομείς του αθλητισμού, του θεάτρου, της μουσικής, του χορού, της λογοτεχνίας, του κινηματογράφου, της κωμωδίας, των εικαστικών τεχνών, του σχεδιασμού, της βιοτεχνίας, των τροφίμων και του κρασιού, της ιστορίας και της εκπαίδευσης, καθώς και κάθε άλλος τομέας που εμπίπτει κάτω από την «ομπρέλα» των τεχνών ή του πολιτιστικού.
Το Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ του Σίδνεϊ ενθαρρύνει αιτήσεις από όλες τις άλλες πολιτισμικές ομάδες που έχουν προτάσεις που θα μπορούσαν να εμπλουτίσουν το πρόγραμμα και να προσφέρουν μια νέα προοπτική για αμοιβαίο πολιτιστικό δεσμό.

Όλες οι αιτήσεις πρέπει σταλούν στα γραφεία του Φεστιβάλ μέχρι τις 5 μ.μ., Παρασκευή, 17 Οκτωβρίου 2014.

Άλυτο παραμένει, δυστυχώς, το θέμα της Φορολογικής Κατοικίας για τους απόδημους Έλληνες.

Άλυτο παραμένει, δυστυχώς, το θέμα της Φορολογικής Κατοικίας για τους απόδημους Έλληνες καθώς η κυβέρνηση και, ειδικότερα, ο υφυπουργός Οικονομικών, κ. Γιώργος Μαυραγάνης, δεν δίνει οριστική λύση στο δράμα που συνιστά η προσπάθεια να αποδείξουν οι ομογενείς ότι δεν είναι… ελέφαντες!
Ότι, δηλαδή, δεν μπορεί να είναι από πολλά χρόνια εγκατεστημένοι οικογενειακώς στο εξωτερικό και κάποιοι υπάλληλοι στις Εφορίες, τηρώντας το γράμμα και όχι εφαρμόζοντας το πνεύμα του νόμου, να θέλουν να τους ταλαιπωρούν, ζητώντας είτε να τους φορολογήσουν για το παγκόσμιο εισόδημά τους είτε να τους ζητούν ατελείωτα πιστοποιητικά, χαρτιά, «αποδείξεις και ονόματα»!

Έτσι, πολλοί ομογενείς εναποθέτουν πλέον τις ελπίδες τους προσωπικά στον πρωθυπουργό, κ. Αντώνη Σαμαρά, προς τον οποίο κοινοποιούν επιστολές με την παράκληση να ασκήσει την επιρροή του ώστε να διευθετηθεί το όλο ζήτημα.

Η εκκρεμότητα αυτή έχει φέρει πολλούς ομογενείς σε κατάσταση απόγνωσης (και αγανάκτησης) που κινδυνεύουν και με πρόστιμα, αφού οι ΔΟΥ δεν τους αποδέχονται ως φορολογικούς κατοίκους εξωτερικού, αλλά ούτε και τους απορρίπτουν, ώστε να ξέρουν πώς θα υποβάλλουν τη φορολογική τους δήλωση! Έτσι, και δεν βρίσκουν το δίκιο τους και καλούνται να πληρώσουν και πρόστιμο από πάνω, αφού η ανάλγητη γραφειοκρατία τους εξωθεί σε εκπρόθεσμη υποβολή δηλώσεων!
Ομογενείς διαμαρτύρονται με απευθείας επιστολές τους προς τον αρμόδιο υφυπουργό, Γεώργιο Μαυραγάνη, και κοινοποίηση στον πρωθυπουργό, Αντώνη Σαμαρά, και άλλους αρμοδίους θεσμικούς παράγοντες.

το Υπουργείο Οικονομικών μεταβιβάζει τις ευθύνες για την παράταση της αβεβαιότητας από τον Άννα στον Καϊάφα ή από τους υπαλλήλους των Εφοριών στους ίδιους τους απόδημους!

Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες της Panhellenic Post, ο υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών, κ. Κυριάκος Γεροντόπουλος, παρ’ ότι το θέμα δεν εμπίπτει στις αρμοδιότητές του, βρίσκεται σε συνεννόηση με τον ομόλογό του των Οικονομικών, κ. Γεώργιο Μαυραγάνη, σε μία προσπάθεια να δοθεί λύση στο πρόβλημα. Μάλιστα, ο κ. Μαυραγάνης φέρεται να έχει συστήσει στην νέα γενική γραμματέα Εσόδων, κ. Κατερίνα Σαββαϊδου, να κοιτάξει το ζήτημα προκειμένου να διευκρινιστούν κάποιες ασάφειες του προηγούμενου Γ.Γ.Ε. κ. Θεοχάρη.

Το κυρίως ερώτημα που διατυπώνουν οι ομογενείς είναι, εάν ισχύει η ΠΟΛ. 1136/10.6.2013 για κάποιον που θέλει να κάνει αλλαγή φορολογικής κατοικίας ή εάν ισχύει μόνον για τους ήδη καταχωρημένους ως μονίμους φορολογικούς κατοίκους εξωτερικού, ενώ, αντίθετα, για όσους θέλουν τώρα να κάνουν την αλλαγή φορολογικής κατοικίας ισχύει ο παλαιότερος 1142/2012.

Αυτό το τελευταίο ισχυρίζονται πολλές ΔΟΥ, ενώ, παράλληλα, αγνοούν το διαζευκτικό ή της ΠΟΛ 1136/13 και ζητούν από τους ομογενείς να προσκομίσουν άπειρα δικαιολογητικά, όπως καταγγέλλει στην ΡΗΡ ο ομογενής, κ. Κώστας Γιαννόπουλος, από τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής, ότι του ζητά συγκεκριμένη ΔΟΥ. Παρά το ό,τι έχει βάλει εξουσιοδοτημένο λογιστή και δικηγόρο προκειμένου να βρει μία άκρη, όχι μόνο δεν το κατάφερε, αλλά ήδη εκπνέει η προθεσμία υποβολής φορολογικών δηλώσεων και ο ίδιος αδυνατεί να υποβάλλει τη δική του!

Οι ομογενείς αναρωτιούνται, μάλιστα, γιατί το Υπουργείο Οικονομικών δεν δίνει, έστω, και σιωπηρή παράταση για την υποβολή των φορολογικών δηλώσεων της συγκεκριμένης κατηγορίας… εάν, όπως ψιθυρίζεται, υπεύθυνοι είναι ορισμένοι υπάλληλοι ΔΟΥ.
Ιδού τα δικαιολογητικά που ζήτησε η ΔΟΥ Καλαμάτας από τον κ. Γιαννόπουλο, για να τον εγγράψει ως φορολογικό κάτοικο εξωτερικού και να μην τον φορολογήσει για το παγκόσμιο εισόδημά του:
Πληρεξούσιο για τον λογιστή. Εγγραφή στο Δήμο της Αμερικής όπου φαίνεται ότι το ζεύγος Γιαννοπούλου είναι μόνιμοι κάτοικοι Αμερικής. Ασφαλιστήριο ότι το ζεύγος είναι ασφαλισμένο στην Αμερική για ιατροφαρμακευτική περίθαλψη. Βεβαίωση εργασίας του συζύγου στην Αμερική. Λογαριασμό Ηλεκτρικού Ρεύματος και λογαριασμό νερού για όλο το 2013.

Αφού τα κατέθεσαν όλα αυτά, σε τρεις μέρες τους ειδοποίησαν ότι… δεν αρκούν!
Τους ζήτησαν ακόμη να προσκομίσουν: Δικαιολογητικά που να αποδεικνύουν ότι τα συγγενικά πρόσωπα (!) τους αιτούντος (κόρη, αδέλφια, πατέρας κ.ά.) ζουν στο εξωτερικό! Τα προσκόμισαν και αυτά.
Πάλι δεν ήταν αρκετά και αυτά. Ζήτησαν ακόμη: Πιστοποιητικό γέννησης της κόρης, οικογενειακή μερίδα, οικογενειακή κατάσταση των γονέων, τα εισιτήρια που έχουν ταξιδέψει και πόσο καιρό λείπουν στην Αμερική, τα διαβατήρια και -έλεος!- και μία υπεύθυνη δήλωση ότι δεν είναι στην Ελλάδα ασφαλισμένος σε κανένα άλλο Ασφαλιστικό Ταμείο”!
Δυστυχώς, υπήρξε και συνέχεια!
Τους ζήτησαν, επιπροσθέτως, πιστοποιητικό από Αμερικανό λογιστή που να δείχνει ότι στην Αμερική φορολογείται για το παγκόσμιο εισόδημα καθώς και αντίγραφο της δήλωσης που κάνει στο IRS όπου φαίνονται δηλωμένα και τα ενοίκια που εισπράττει από την Ελλάδα…

Κατόπιν όλων αυτών, ο ομογενής Κώστας Γιαννόπουλος, υποχρεώθηκε να στείλει επιστολή με ημερομηνία 9 Ιουλίου 2014 στη αρμόδια ΔΟΥ, με παραλήπτη τον Πρωθυπουργό κ. Αντώνη Σαμαρά και κοινοποίηση στον Υφυπουργό Οικονομικών Γιώργο Μαυραγάνη, κ.α. με την οποία παρακαλούσε όπως ο Προϊστάμενος της συγκεκριμένης ΔΟΥ προβεί άμεσα στην αλλαγή φορολογικής του κατοικίας καθώς χρειάζεται να καταθέσει αντίγραφο και στις αρμόδιες αμερικανικές φορολογικές αρχές.
Μέχρι την Παρασκευή, 11 Ιουνίου 2014, ο αιτών ομογενής ΔΕΝ είχε λάβει απάντηση εάν έχει μεταγραφεί ως φορολογικός κάτοικος εξωτερικού! Τη Δευτέρα (σήμερα) εκπνέει η προθεσμία. Τώρα, απειλείται και με πρόστιμο για εκπρόθεσμη δήλωση…

We are just two games away from finding out who will be named Victoria’s best. Two Greek sponsored clubs will fight for their finals spot this week, but they have a lot to think about besides that.

It’s a packed calendar for two Greek sponsored clubs, readying to claim Victoria’s local Cup.

If all things go to plan, we might be seeing Bentleigh Greens and South Springvale (Aris) go head to head in the Dockerty Cup final, but they have to get through the semi-finals first.

Bentleigh will start proceedings, taking on an unpredictable Melbourne Knights on Tuesday.

Aris, coming in as the underdogs of the group, will take on an NPL1 club, Saint Albans, on Wednesday.

Aris has had a whirlwind couple of weeks. In the State League 1 – South East, it’s defied belief and made it into the FFA Cup round of 32, joining the ranks of state stalwarts and A-League clubs.

Before they charge into their semi-final match, they have to think about their state league games, who to rest and who to risk.

Speaking to Aris coach Bill Lambropoulos before his game against Doncaster Rovers Friday night, he was still at odds with who to bench, but will definitely
be using the game to finalise his Dockerty Cup squad.

“We’ve lightened the load up a little bit this week, because we’ve got three games in eight days,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“These aren’t premier league boys, they don’t train four times a week, we train twice a week.”

He says the Doncaster game will be a chance to keep honing their formation work and capitalise on their good results of late.

They won their last match 2-1 against Casey Comets and are currently third on the ladder.

Bentleigh Greens, on the other hand, are without coach John Anastasiadis, who is in Greece completing his UEFA A Licence. Their crucial games coming
up will be watched over by assistant coach John Gabrielson, who will be caretaker coach for the next three weeks.

It’s not just the NPL league games and the Dockerty Cup finals to conted with, they have an impending FFA Cup match away in NSW and a friendly against Melbourne Victory to think about.

Before leaving, Anastasiadis said his team is ready for the challenge, but stressed how unpredictable these games can get.

“These are the games where there’s no second chance,” he said in a press conference.

South Melbourne is proof of that. The shoo-in favourites were up against the Knights a couple of weeks ago but it seems that the stress of the match got to them.

Stress isn’t much of an issue for Aris, with their underdog status, they say the pressure will be on the NPL1 opponents. They have more to prove.

“We’re not playing with any anxiety, we’re just happy to be there,” coach Lambropoulos says.

“I think the pressure is more on them than us.”

At least Lambropoulos is preparing well for the match. He was seen on Monday watching the St Albans match against Bulleen, sizing up their opponent.

“They are going to be a very, very difficult side to beat,” he says.

Lambropoulos has been the figurehead of Aris for the past three years and has spearheaded a massive change at the suburban club.

“I came to this club three years ago and we had to start from absolutely zero, we didn’t have a team,” he says.

“It’s taken us three years to get this team to gel together and to bring in a couple of other new players to help us and I think all their hard work is starting to
show.”

Amazingly, when Lambropoulos came to Aris, the club only had two junior teams. Now the club has over 250 players, all housed in a new and improved pavilion.

Playing in the FFA Cup round of 32, they will have the only local Melbourne match, welcoming Newcastle team South Cardiff to none other than Kingston Heath Reserve, Bentleigh Greens’ home turf.

The significance of the event hasn’t really sunk in for Lambropoulos.

“I don’t think we’ve understood what it means yet,” he says.

“We’re just looking forward to it.”

Bentleigh Greens feel the same way, and say many clubs have missed a huge opportunity not taking the Cup more seriously.

“I think a lot of the clubs that did miss out I think they’ve realised how big it is and didn’t take much notice of it early on,” Anastasiadis says.

Bentleigh have one of the toughest fixtures away from the A-League clubs, taking on Sydney’s best, Blacktown City.

Not having the luxury to see the club play, Anastasiadis has been making a couple of phone calls to his Sydney confidants to get the lowdown.

Things aren’t looking good.

“There are reports coming out that Blacktown are the next best thing out of the A-League,” he says.

At least for now, it’s one Cup at a time, with all efforts focused on being crowned Victoria’s best.

Greek Australian and Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris spent his 60th birthday in Greece, celebrating with over 100 businessmen and the Greek Prime Minister.

Business never sleeps, and for Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris, celebrating his birthday wasn’t a time to loosen the tie.

His 60th birthday party had over 100 invited businessmen and women as guests from Australia, America and Italy, all there to talk investments.

The VIP guest was none other than the Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, who joined the group in the Greek island of Kastelorizo.

Almost everyone was positive about Greece’s financial progress but used their time to persuade Mr Samaras to look at tax issues to enhance investment opportunities.

The general manager of Coca-Cola, convinced that the Greek economy has avoided bankruptcy, voiced his interest in investing in Greece if it changed its tax rates and converted to a flat tax system.

Already, Mr Liveris has showed his business support by brokering a deal to increase Dow Chemical and IBM’s interest in Athens. Liveris sits on the IMB board and facilitated the link between the two multinational giants, so that Dow Chemical will now utilise IBM’s service centre in Athens as a base from
which to offer electronic support concerning its global activities.

“We have witnessed a change in Greece,” Mr Liveris said on the deal and the new landscape of Greece.

“We have seen a recovery of confidence and credibility. We have seen liquidity return.”

Mr Liveris was born in Darwin to migrant parents and has become one of the most influential businessmen in the world.

As well as being the CEO of Dow Chemicals, Mr Liveris has become a political advisor to Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama, and launched the Hellenic Initiative, which looks at supporting crisis relief in Greece and promoting entrepreneurship.

Economic growth predicted for debt-riddled Greece.

After six years of negative growth and recession, the modern Greek tragedy is starting to take a 180 degree turn as the country strives toward positive economic growth, thanks to a boost in tourism, revitalised European Union-supported infrastructure projects and increased availability of loans from recapitalised banks.

At its peak, Greece’s financial crisis caused the economy to shrink by 25 per cent, the loss of tens of thousands of family-owned businesses and living standards to fall to appalling levels, as the country vehemently culled its public and social spending to stem the economic bleed.

Many Greeks fled the country, opting for opportunities in Germany, the UK and Gulf states, as the country perilled amidst the cuts.

But Greece has been boosted by its return to international capital markets in April, and increasing confidence has encouraged hedge funds and private equity groups to reconsider Greek companies as serious investment prospects.

The country’s revenue targets are on track to hit a primary surplus of 1.5 per cent before the repayment of loan interest, according to figures from the first five months, but more obstacles need to be met before it can be completely in the clear – and headed towards complete recovery.

Particularly, the European Central Bank’s stress testing of eurozone banks, which gives a representation of non-performing loan portfolios, resolves debates about banks’ recapitalisation needs and write-downs of bad debt, to prevent companies from draining funds that can be allocated toward profitable business ventures.

Secondly, Greece will have to overcome negotiations with the EU and IMF on debt relief, in the hopes for debt restructures.

Thirdly, a worrying prospect for the Greek government is the non-election of a new president, when incumbent Karolos Papoulias retires next year. The Greek parliament must elect a new president with a two-thirds majority, and if it fails fresh elections will be held, which will invariably delay restructure programs. The ideological make-up of the current Greek parliament, consisting of a coalition government (made up of centre-left-and-right party members from PASOK and New Democracy), leftist party Syriza and the far-right Golden Dawn party, potentially creates a stumbling block.

But, reforms have already made it easier for young entrepreneurs to create new businesses and hire part-time personnel, thanks in part to EU-backed funding, which is making incredible inroads to Greece’s predicted recovery.

The country is also involved in the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline project which transports natural gas from the Shah Deniz field in Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea territory to central Europe. The construction of the Greek fragment is expected to create 1,000 jobs in Greece’s northern regions, where unemployment rates are at a staggering 30 percent.

China too has emerged as a major investor in Greece, with Chinese prime minister Li Keqiang describing it as his country’s “gateway to Europe”. Chinese shipping operator Cosco operates a container terminal at Pireaus, Greece’s main shipping port, and other Chinese companies are looking to acquire concessions to operate Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ and the state railway company when they are privatised next year.

A treasure of 10,600 neolithic objects removed from Greece illegally during the Second World War were welcomed back to the country at an event in Athens this week, which was attended by Greek and German officials.

The objects include pot shards, stone tools, obsidian and flint blades and bone material that were excavated illegally between June and December 1941 by Nazi archaeologists under the guidance of Alfred Rosenberg, Hitler’s chief ideologist.

The Nazis were keen to use the find to claim that the ancestors of the Greeks had originated in northern Europe, where they had established presence from prehistoric times.

The event, held at the culture ministry’s directorate of registration and protection of cultural material, was attended by the Greek culture minister, the German ambassador, the director of the German archaeological open air neolithic museum at Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen – which was instrumental in the return – and Greek and German archaeologists.

Angelica Douzougli, an honorary ephor of antiquities whose doctoral dissertation led to the discovery of the material, spoke of how her search began in the 1970s, from a prehistoric archaeology seminar at the University of Nuremberg, where she was studying and where her interest focused on agricultural and animal breeding communities of Thessaly.

The materials repatriated on Monday come from several sites in Thessaly, an area that has yielded a richness of neolithic material. Most of it can be traced to the Visviki Magoula, or tumulus, dated to between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago. The Visviki material was packed in 28 boxes, five of which were returned to Greece in the 1950s.

The material will be housed temporarily at the National Archaeological Museum, which also has the material from the 1950s. The study of the material will be augmented by photographs from the 1940s showing modern lake communities of Thessaly in and around Lake Karla (no longer in existence) which resemble those of Lake Constance (Bodensee), in Germany, recreated by the Pfahlbaumuseum – focusing on the stone and bronze ages – which assisted in the repatriation of the material.

“Unfortunately, the most important material, eight boxes that remained in Volos in 1941, is now lost,” museum director Gunter Schöbel said.
Greek Culture Ministry officials reviewed the directorate’s efforts to repatriate material stolen during the occupation, including 26 cases handled by Rosenberg’s bureau involving 1,158 objects, 41 boxes with Jewish manuscripts and other palaeolithic findings.

Director Suzanna Houlia-Kapeloni said that of all the cases, objects were returned to Greece by Germany (12 instances), Austria (3), Switzerland (3), Italy (2), United States (2), Britain (2), Australia (1) and Bulgaria (1).

The ministry’s director of antiquities and cultural heritage, Maria Vlazaki, said the repatriation of the material was “a double cause of joy … as German, Greek and Austrian archaeologists worked closely together to make this happen”.

Greek Culture Minister Konstantinos Tassoulas referred to the symbolism of the gesture, noting that such moves contribute decisively to the strengthening of bilateral ties between Greece and Germany.

The repatriation of Greek cultural artefacts is among Greece’s demands for German wartime reparations, according to the foreign ministry.

Matiasma, skortha and evil eye stories have now found their place in the kids’ book Garlic, Hankies and Hugs, by Michelle Monaghan, as a reminder of the importance of our cultural heritage.

How many times has your Greek yiayia put a garlic clove in your pocket to protect you from evil spirits? Or did her ftou sou secret weapon for the same reason? How many times did you try to explain to your non-Greek friends the meaning of matiasma, skortha and the evil eye?

Tradition holds that simply saying the word skortha will ward off evil spirits. Spitting three times is believed to chase away the devil. Some Greeks believe a person can catch the evil eye or matiasma from someone else’s jealousy.

All the mysterious scenarios, with only one aim – to protect her grandchildren – were played out in the kitchen of Lela Miconiatis around this belief.
In her new Australian kids’ book, released by JoJo Publishing last month, Lela’s granddaughter and author Michelle Monaghan encourages kids to celebrate and be proud of their culture. Told in rhyming verse, Michelle’s first book Garlic, Hankies and Hugs includes lovely quirky snippets about Greek cultural traditions.

The story for Michelle’s first book comes straight from her own family. Visiting her Greek nanna, Lela Miconiatis, meant squeezed cheeks and going through a very weird tradition – even being spat at.

But it was her ‘nun’ Lela that inspired Michelle to write a kids’ book about skortha – or more precisely, about diversity and multiculturalism and how to accept it.

“My mum’s side is the Greek side. We are a small family, so I really appreciate all the customs and traditions we’ve had, such as for Easter and Christmas.”

Egyptian Greek, Lela moved to Brazil with her family during the Suez Canal War in 1956. Three years later they moved to Melbourne, sailing into Port Melbourne on the Lloyd Triestino ship.

“I guess because I’m half Greek I wanted to hold on to as many of the traditions as possible, so when I raise my son and my family we remember those and keep practising those customs with our family,” Michelle tells Neos Kosmos.

In her book, Michelle reveals quirky and idiosyncratic family traditions and celebrates them rather than trying to hide them. The book is suitable for children 4-10 years old, and even upper primary school students, who are the launching point to promote universal diversity and acceptance, as Michelle says.

What inspired Michelle, as a primary teacher, to make her personal story a kids’ book, was that interesting element that often attracts kids’ attention.

“When you read stories to kids you try something that is a bit quirky or interesting, or they haven’t heard of, and a lot of my non-Greek family and friends haven’t heard of it before, of matiasma and skortho. So I thought it was a cute, fun tradition to highlight and celebrate. Nun still does it to this day.

“Nun is a very funny lady and beautiful person at the age of 85. I thought the book would be a nice tribute to her as she is such an important part of our family. I’ve written the book without telling her, the first time she read it was when it was published – she was the first one to read it.

“First she cried, of course, and then she did exactly what’s in the book – ftou ftou ftou. I laughed – I said that’s the whole reason for the book and you just did it,” Michelle says with a laugh.

“Unless you grew up in a family that does that – for other people that’s so weird. But for my nanna it’s like second nature. Anything good that happens – bang – here comes the spit.”

Proud of her “most beautiful, smartest and nicest” three grandchildren, Lela was also proud that she was featured in the book. There was one thing though she didn’t enjoy as much – illustrations of a grandma.

“She liked the illustrations in general but I think my nanna looks quite glamorous, and she was like ‘Oooh, that doesn’t look like me at all’,” Michelle giggles.
With 13 years experience as a primary school teacher, Michelle says she is happy to see more acceptance of diversity and multiculturalism as years go by.

“I taught in different schools – some that are very diverse, and other that are more Anglo-Saxon. My mum used to talk about how she felt awkward when she went to school with a mortadella or salami sandwich instead of cheese and Vegemite; and now all that different food you see – it’s beautiful, as 20-30 years ago that wouldn’t happen. I am very proud how multicultural we and our kids are.

“I am a big supporter of multiculturalism because I wouldn’t be here otherwise – that’s how my mum and dad met; my dad coming from England and my mum from Egypt via Brazil.”

Michelle, however, doesn’t deny the fact that it can sometimes be hard to teach children to be proud of their background and to cherish their diverse heritage.

“It depends on the school you are in, on the family, as I saw children being not too kind to other children when they’ve actually come from somewhere else as well. I think it’s just about making them aware that aside from Aboriginals, in Australia everybody came from somewhere else. Kids should understand where they come from rather than be embarrassed of it.”

Outgoing Greece coach Fernando Santos still laments extra time nerves but is very positive about the team’s future.

Outgoing Greece coach Fernando Santos has clarified comments regarding his former players, praising their passion for soccer but lamenting the fact that they did not play with cooler heads during extra time in their second round World Cup match against Costa Rica, which led to the national side being eliminated from the tournament.

“I think I was unable to pass the message to the players when we went to extra time because that was a very difficult moment as the players were very tired and anxious,” Santos told Portuguese state broadcaster RTP.

“We were unable to keep a cool head, to think more of the team. But I’m not criticising any particular player. If we had played differently in extra time we could have obtained an even more historical result.”

Santos took Greece into the second round of the World Cup for the first time in its history but appeared unhappy about the performance of his players.
However, the Portuguese coach insisted in his interview that he felt the Greek players had given their best.

“No one can say to these players that they don’t have passion for the game,” he said. “I don’t know any other players with such passion. I’ve always told them that if I had to give them a score on a 0-10 scale, I would give them 11.”

However, the former AEK and PAOK manager admitted that Greece had been weak in attack and that players often tried to make up for this through individual efforts, which at times held the team back.

“In organised attacks our players were very individualistic and in a tournament like this that individualism damages the confidence of the team when it attacks,” he said.

Santos praised Giorgos Karagounis, the midfielder who announced his retirement from international soccer after 139 appearances, for his passion.

“Karagounis is the real Greek player: the passion, the individual characteristics, he is a symbol, he has such an indescribable love for the Greek shirt,” he said.

Santos, however, also suggested that the national team has a bright future, noting that there 13 new players in the squad compared to the one that took part in the 2010 World Cup.

Santos also stressed the role he had played in developing the grassroots of Greek soccer in his four years in charge of the national set-up.

“If there is something that I think I left in Greece – beyond the results and the friendship with people and the relationship with Greek people – it’s the legacy I left at the Greek federation, where I helped create the structure of Greek soccer,” he said.

“Now there is under-15 soccer, there is a national tournament with scouting of 14-year-olds, which didn’t exist before. Also, there is a database – you can go to the Greek federation at any hour of the day or the night, you click one button and you know everything you want about the players and their careers. That was created by me and my team.”

He clarified he did not sign a new contract with the Hellenic Football Federation over payment issues but said he would not rule out a return to Greece in the future.
