Πέπλο μυστηρίου καλύπτει και πάλι τη νέα αεροπορική τραγωδία αεροπλάνου των μαλαισιανών αερογραμμών, με την αιτία για τη συντριβή του Μπόϊνγκ 777 που οδήγησε στον θάνατο 295 και πλέον ανθρώπων να μην έχει ξεκαθαρίσει ακόμα, αν πρόκειται για τυχαίο γεγονός ή για κατάρριψη από στρατιωτικά πυρά.

Το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης συνετρίβη το εν λόγω αεροπλάνο που πραγματοποιούσε το δρομολόγιο Άμστερνταμ – Κουάλα Λουμπούρ, και στο οποίο επέβαιναν τουλάχιστον 280 επιβάτες, με 15 άτομα πλήρωμα, στα σύνορα της Ουκρανίας με τη Ρωσία, σε μια περιοχή όπου εδώ και μήνες μαίνονται σφοδρές συγκρούσεις.

Σύμφωνα με την ουκρανική πλευρά, το αεροπλάνο που πετούσε σε ύψος 10 χιλιομέτρων (33.000 πόδια), καταρρίφθηκε από τους ρωσόφωνους αντάρτες, ενώ οι αντάρτες αντίθετα ανακοίνωσαν ότι το αεροπλάνο καταρρίφθηκε από ουκρανικό μαχητικό.

Όπως δήλωσε Αμερικάνος αξιωματούχος στο CNN, οι ΗΠΑ διαθέτουν στοιχεία σύμφωνα με τα οποία αποδεικνύεται ότι το αεροπλάνο καταρρίφθηκε από πύραυλο εδάφους-αέρος, άγνωστο ακόμα από ποιους.

Νεότερες αναφορές κάνουν λόγο για περισσότερους από 300 νεκρούς, εκ των οποίων οι 23 αμερικάνοι πολίτες, οι 154 Ολλανδοί, οι 9 Βρετανοί, οι 4 Γάλλοι, οι 27 Αυστραλοί και οι 23 Μαλαισιανοί.

Εν τω μεταξύ συγγενείς των επιβατών της μοιραίας πτήσης συγκεντρώνονται στο αεροδρόμιο του Άμστερνταμ, όπου θα πραγματοποιηθεί αργότερα συνέντευξη τύπου.

Σύμφωνα με τον υπουργό Εσωτερικών της Ουκρανίας όλοι οι επιβάτες είναι νεκροί, ενώ από ρωσικής πλευράς αναφέρουν ότι ανέμεναν να εντοπίσουν το αεροσκάφος στο ρωσικό FIR στις 17.20 τοπική ώρα, κάτι το οποίο όμως δεν συνέβη ποτέ.

Το ρωσικό πρακτορείο Interfax μεταδίδει ότι πρόκειται για «κατάρριψη», ενώ ένας σύμβουλος της ουκρανικής κυβέρνησης δήλωσε ότι το αεροπλάνο καταρρίφθηκε από πύραυλο εδάφους-αέρος και ότι αυτό ήταν αποτέλεσμα «τρομοκρατικής ενέργειας».

Το Boeing 777 των Μαλαισιανών Αερογραμμών στο οποίο επέβαιναν τουλάχιστον 295 άνθρωποι καταρρίφθηκε από ένα ουκρανικό μαχητικό αεροσκάφος, υποστηρίζουν οι αποσχιστές αντάρτες.

«Μάρτυρες είδαν το Boeing 777 να δέχεται επίθεση από ένα ουκρανικό καταδιωκτικό αεροσκάφος. Λίγο αργότερα το αεροσκάφος κόπηκε στα δύο και έπεσε στο έδαφος της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας του Λουχάνσκ. Μετά την επίθεση το ουκρανικό αεροσκάφος κατερρίφθη και έπεσε και αυτό στο έδαφος της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας του Λουχάνσκ», αναφέρει ο επίσημος ιστότοπος της αυτοανακηρυχθείσας αυτής Δημοκρατίας.

Οι ίδιοι, ζήτησαν τριήμερη εκεχειρία από τον ουκρανικό στρατό, λόγω του γεγονότος.

Και η ρωσική κυβέρνηση διαμηνύει ότι πολεμικά της αεροσκάφη δεν βρίσκονταν στην περιοχή. Παράλληλα, ο ρώσος πρόεδρος Βλαντιμίρ Πούτιν εξέφρασε τα βαθιά του συλλυπητήρια στον μαλαισιανό ομόλογό του, ενώ νωρίτερα είχε τηλεφωνική συνομιλία για το θέμα με τον Μπάρακ Ομπάμα.

Επίσης, ρωσικά σωστικά συνεργεία έχουν ζητήσει άδεια για να συμμετέχουν στις έρευνες.

Η αλήθεια για την πτώση του Μπόϊνγκ στα χέρια των αυτονομιστών;

Όπως μεταδίδει το CNN, το μαύρο κουτί του μοιραίου αεροπλάνου έχει ήδη βρεθεί και έτσι αναμένεται να γίνουν γνωστές σημαντικές λεπτομέρειες για τα αίτια της συντριβής. Όμως, με νεότερη ανακοίνωσή τους, οι αυτονομιστές αντάρτες δηλώνουν ότι βρήκαν οι ίδιοι το μαύρο κουτί, και άρα το «κλειδί» για τα αίτια της πτώσης του αεροπλάνου! Επισημαίνουν μάλιστα ότι θα το στείλουν στη Μόσχα για έλεγχο.

Νέα τροπή στο μυστήριο δίνει το δημοσίευμα ουκρανικής εφημερίδας, ότι ένας ηγέτης των ρώσων αυτονομιστών της ανατολικής Ουκρανία, ο Igor Girkin, πήρε… πάνω του την κατάρριψη του Boeing.

Στόχος ο Πούτιν;

Σύμφωνα με άλλο σενάριο, του Russia Today, στόχος των δραστών ήταν το αεροσκάφος του Βλαντιμίρ Πούτιν που ταξίδευε στον ίδιο αεροδιάδρομο και το στίγμα του, μαζί με αυτό του Boeing, βρέθηκε στο ίδιο σημείο αλλά με μια διαφορά ώρας!

«Το προεδρικό αεροπλάνο ήταν εκεί στις 16.21 ώρα Μόσχας και το μαλαισιανό Boeing στις 15.44», ανέφερε πηγή προσθέτοντας ότι τα δύο αεροπλάνα μοιάζουν στην όψη, έχουν παρόμοιο περίγραμμα, διαστάσεις και χρώματα. Υπάρχει επίσης ένα ακόμη σενάριο ότι το αεροπλάνο καταρρίφθηκε από άλλο ουκρανικό το οποίο πίστεψε ότι ήταν αυτό που μετέφερε τον Βλ. Πούτιν…

Ο πρωθυπουργός της Μαλαισίας Μοχντ Νατζίμπ Τουν Ραζάκ δήλωσε σοκαρισμένος από τις πληροφορίες για τη συντριβή και διέταξε την άμεση έναρξη έρευνας.

Κλείνει ο ουκρανικός εναέριος χώρος

Εν τω μεταξύ, η ουκρανική υπηρεσία αεροπλοήγησης ανακοίνωσε ότι οι αεροδιάδρομοι στα ανατολικά όπου μαίνονται οι συγκρούσεις είναι ανοιχτοί μόνο πάνω από τα 9.600 μέτρα – το μοιραίο Boeing πετούσε στα 10.400 μέτρα. Η Παγκόσμια Υπηρεσία Αεροπλοΐας παράλληλα ανακοίνωσε ότι το αεροπλάνο δεν πέταγε πάνω από «απαγορευμένη ζώνη».

Όμως, η μία μετά την άλλη από τις μεγάλες αεροπορικές εταιρείες ανακοινώνουν ότι οι πτήσεις τους δεν θα διέρχονται πια του ουκρανικού εναέριου χώρου, μετά τη συντριβή του αεροπλάνου των μαλαισιανών αερογραμμών που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τον θάνατο 295 ανθρώπων.

Η Lufthansa, η Air France, η British Airways και η Turkish Airlines είναι μεταξύ των εταιριών που ανακοίνωσαν ότι διακόπτουν τις συγκεκριμένες πτήσεις.

Εν τω μεταξύ, ο εναέριος χώρος της Ουκρανίας έκλεισε για τις πολιτικές πτήσεις λίγες ώρες μετά τη συντριβή.

ΟΗΕ: Έκτακτη συνεδρίαση του Σ.Α. του ΟΗΕ την Παρασκευή

Το Συμβούλιο Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ θα συνέλθει εκτάκτως την Παρασκευή προκειμένου να συζητήσει τις εξελίξεις έπειτα και από την κατάρριψη του Boeing 777 των Μαλαισιανών Αερογραμμών στην Ανατολική Ουκρανία που προκάλεσε το θάνατο των τουλάχιστον 295 ανθρώπων που επέβαιναν σε αυτό.

Ποιος και πώς κατέρριψε το αεροπλάνο;

Ειδικός σε αμυντικά θέματα δήλωσε στο BBC, ότι για να καταρριφθεί αεροπλάνο που πετά στα 10,000 μέτρα, απαιτείται μακράς ακτίνας δράσης πύραυλος εδάφους- αέρος κατευθυνόμενος από ραντάρ. Αυτό σημαίνει πως είναι απίθανο να καταρρίφθηκε από αυτομεταφερόμενους αντιαεροπορικούς πυραύλους που χρησιμοποιούν οι αυτονομιστές αντάρτες, και έχουν πολύ μικρότερη ακτίνα δράσης.

Μία άλλη πιθανότητα είναι το επιβατικό –που πετούσε τόσο ψηλά- να καταρρίφθηκε από μαχητικό με πύραυλο αέρος-αέρος.

Οι ΗΠΑ αναμένεται να έχουν σύντομα πρόσβαση στην εικόνα της περιοχής, από δορυφορικό σύστημα παρακολούθησης και με μέθοδο υπεριώδη να διαπιστώσει την τροχιά που διέγραψε ο πύραυλος που κατέρριψε το επιβατικό αεροσκάφος.

Αριθμός από ουκρανικά μαχητικά αεροπλάνα και ελικόπτερα έχουν καταρριφθεί πρόσφατα από μικράς ακτίνας δράσης πυραύλους, επειδή πετούσαν σε χαμηλό ύψος. Η ουκρανική κυβέρνηση έχει κατηγορήσει τη Ρωσία ότι εφοδιάζει τους ρωσόφωνους αυτονομιστές αντάρτες με αντιαεροπορικούς πυραύλους.

Το αεροσκάφος των μαλαισιανών αερογραμμών που καταρρίφθηκε

Η περιοχή που έπεσαν τα συντρίμμια του αεροσκάφους αποτελεί θέατρο άγριων μαχών ανάμεσα στους ρωσόφωνους αυτονομιστές και τα κυβερνητικά στρατεύματα του Κιέβου, τις τελευταίες ημέρες. Το βράδυ της Τετάρτης, ουκρανικό μαχητικό τύπου «Σουχόι-25» καταρρίφθηκε από πύραυλο, που σύμφωνα με τους Ουκρανούς εβλήθη από ρωσικό αεροσκάφος. Την ίδια ώρα, ρωσόφωνοι αντάρτες είχαν καυχηθεί για την κατάρριψη δύο μαχητικών Σουχόι, της ουκρανικής αεροπορίας.

Από το ουκρανικό υπουργείο Άμυνας ανακοινώθηκε πως το δεύτερο τζετ εβλήθη από πύραυλο εδάφους –αέρος, αλλά ο πιλότος του διασώθηκε με αλεξίπτωτο.

Στις αρχές της εβδομάδας η Ουκρανία είχε ανακοινώσει ότι στρατιωτικό μεταγωγικό της αεροσκάφος είχε καταρριφθεί από πύραυλο που είχε βληθεί από ρωσικό έδαφος.

Μνήμες ψυχρού πολέμου

Είναι η πρώτη φορά, –εάν επιβεβαιωθεί ότι το επιβατικό καταρρίφθηκε- που σημειώνεται ανάλογο δραματικό επεισόδιο, από την Κατάρριψη της πτήσης KAL 007, ενός επιβατηγού νοτιοκορεατικού αεροσκάφους (Korean Air Lines), τύπου Μπόινγκ 747, από σοβιετικά μαχητικά στο αποκορύφωμα του Ψυχρού Πολέμου την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου του 1983. Το νοτιοκορεατικό τζάμπο είχε παρεκκλίνει της πορείας του και πετούσε πάνω από άκρως απαγορευμένη περιοχή στη Χερσόνησο της Σαχαλίνης. Οι σοβιετικοί το είχαν χαρακτηρίσει «κατασκοπευτικό».

Στο αεροσκάφος εκείνο επέβαιναν συνολικά 269 άτομα και είχαν βρει όλα τον θάνατο.

Η κατάρριψη του νοτιοκορεατικού τζάμπο, είχε προκαλέσει θυελλώδεις αντισοβιετικές αντιδράσεις από τα δυτικά Μέσα.

Malaysia Airlines jet carrying 295 people crashed in eastern Ukraine on Thursday and appears to have been shot out of the sky by a missile fired from the area where pro-Russia separatists and Ukrainian government troops have been fighting for months, aviation and military analysts said.

An advisor to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said the Boeing 777-200ER was downed by a ground-to-air missile over territory controlled by pro-Russia insurgents near the city of Donetsk.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when it failed to confirm its entry into Russian airspace on schedule at 5:20 p.m., Russia’s Interfax news agency said.

The jet began losing altitude about 35 miles before entering Russian airspace and “fell down,” minutes later, setting off its emergency beacon, the Itar-Tass news agency said.

A midair breakup of a long-haul aircraft due to in-flight malfunction is “highly, highly unlikely,” an aviation industry consultant in the Seattle area said, a fact that bolstered suspicion that the plane had been shot down.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said his nation’s armed forces “did not take action against any airborne targets” on Thursday. Ukrainian officials in Kiev noted in their statements on the crash that the pro-Russia militants have shot down a number of aircraft in recent days over the territory they claim to control.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian officials accused Russian forces of being behind the downing of a Ukrainian Su-25 aircraft near Donetsk on Wednesday.

State-controlled Russia Today television said it had been told by officials of the separatist-proclaimed Peoples Republic of Donetsk that the militants had nothing to do with the Malaysian jet crash.

Militants were the first to reach the crash site, Interfax reported.

“Our self-defense units are already on the site,” Andrei Purgin, first deputy premier of the region, said in a telephone interview with The Times in Moscow. “They already reported many dead passengers including children.”

Sergei Taruta, the Kiev-appointed governor of the Donetsk region sidelined by the militants, said in a statement posted on his administration’s website that the militants were blocking the crash site.

“Right now representatives of the Peoples Republic of Donetsk are preventing rescue workers and law enforcement officers from arriving at the tragedy’s site,” Taruta said. “This can seriously hinder the course of the investigation and the establishing of real reasons for the tragedy and its scope.”

Russia Today posted photos said to have been taken at the crash scene, including one showing a twisted body lying next to two airline seats and another showing a large piece of the fuselage in an open field. The pictures suggested the wreckage came down in pieces over a wide area.

A witness described the crash scene as “the most gory sight” he had ever seen.

“Distorted bodies of dead people and body parts are lying around everywhere in an open field,” Sergei Kavtaradze, a member of the Security Council of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic, said in a phone interview with The Times.

“Our rescue workers and firemen have been working here for several hours. Two things are absolutely clear now: Everyone on board is dead, and it was not us who shot down the plane, as we don’t have this hardware and we don’t have specialists to operate it.”

The flight  recorders had not been found yet, Kavtaradze said, “but once we find them we may send them to Moscow or hand them over to representatives of the airline.”

Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency quoted Donetsk separatist leader Alexander Borodai as saying the militants were calling a two- to three-day cease-fire to facilitate investigation of the crash. Borodai was quoted as saying the incident looked to him to have been a “provocation.”

President Obama said U.S. officials were trying to determine whether American citizens were on board. Malaysia Airlines did not immediately release details of the passenger manifest, though unconfirmed reports said that is included at least 22 Americans. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told a reporter from The Hill that 23 Americans were on the flight.

Obama said the crash “looks like it may be a terrible tragedy” and offered his thoughts and prayers to families of the victims. “The United States will offer any assistance we can to help determine what happened and why,” he told reporters in Wilmington, Del.

Vice President Joe Biden called President Poroshenko to offer U.S. assistance in the investigation, the White House said in a statement.

The aviation website Flightaware said the last recorded position of MH17 was made at 13:20 UTC [6:20 a.m. PDT] just west of the eastern border of Ukraine.

A Russian emergency response team was dispatched to the crash site in the village of Torez, about 25 miles west of the Russian border. The area has been the scene of fierce fighting between pro-Russia militants who have seized and occupied much of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and Ukrainian government troops trying to recover control of the eastern territory.

The plane “disappeared from radar at 10,000 meters [33,000 feet, or more than six miles high] and then crashed near the city of Shakhtarsk in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a source in the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities said,” according to Interfax-Ukraine.

Ukrainian Interior Ministry advisor Anton Gerashchenko said the plane was hit by a rocket fired from a Buk antiaircraft system, capable of reaching targets as far away as 19 miles, which he maintained had been provided to the militants by Russia. Ukrainian officials have accused the Kremlin of supporting the separatist insurrection, an accusation Moscow denies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Ukraine’s Crimea territory to Russia in March after a swift occupation by Russian troops and a hastily organized referendum on independence. The militants in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions appear to have been inspired by the Crimea seizure and some have urged Putin to annex the Ukrainian territory they have occupied since March.

“The cynicism of Putin and his terrorists has no limits,” Gerashchenko said in Russian in a post on his Facebook page, blaming the militants for Malaysian jet downing.

“This was done by terrorists to whom Putin kindly handed such a formidable weapon as Buk to protect themselves from Ukraine air force,” Gerashchenko wrote. “They thought they were shooting at a Ukraine military plane and destroyed almost 300 innocent residents of Europe and Asia. Putin gave monkeys a grenade and must be held responsible for this before an international tribunal.”

Στην προσπάθειά της να θωρακίσει την εθνική ασφάλεια της χώρας, η συντηρητική κυβέρνηση Άμποτ, σχεδιάζει να προσχωρήσει στη λήψη σειράς μέτρων που θα παράσχουν περισσότερες εξουσίες στις μυστικές υπηρεσίες και την ομοσπονδιακή αστυνομία.

Μεταξύ άλλων, σχεδιάζει να ζητήσει από τις τηλεφωνικές εταιρίες και τις εταιρείες ιντερνετικών παροχών να διατηρούν όλες τις τηλεφωνικές κλήσεις, ανταλλαγές μηνυμάτων, email και επαφές μέσω Skype για περισσότερο από δύο χρόνια.

Αν η ομοσπονδιακή Βουλή υπερψηφίσει τις αλλαγές που προτείνει η κυβέρνηση, οι τηλεφωνικές και ιντερνετικές εταιρίες θα είναι υποχρεωμένες να διατηρούν πάνω από δύο χρόνια κάθε σχετική πληροφορία για το ποιος τηλεφωνεί και σε ποιον, πόσο χρόνο μιλούν στο τηλέφωνο, όλα τα μηνύματα που στέλνονται μέσω κινητών τηλεφώνων, την ηλεκτρονική αλληλογραφία των πελατών τους, καθώς και τις συνομιλίες με εικόνα μέσω Skype.

Ένας από τους λόγους που επικαλείται η κυβέρνηση για να ενισχύσει τη σχετική νομοθεσία και να δώσει περισσότερες εξουσίες στην ASIO, την ομοσπονδιακή υπηρεσία και τις άλλες μυστικές υπηρεσίες της χώρας είναι το γεγονός ότι περίπου 150 Αυστραλοί πολίτες, μουσουλμανικής καταγωγής οι περισσότεροι, μετέβησαν στη Μέση Ανατολή προκειμένου να ενισχύσουν τους τζιχαντιστές και να λάβουν μέρος στους εμφύλιους πολέμους που μαίνονται στη Συρία και στο Ιράκ.
Ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα της κυβέρνησης της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας, που υιοθέτησε παρόμοιες αλλαγές που αφορούν τη διατήρηση των τηλεφωνικών και ιντερνετικών πληροφοριών, η κυβέρνηση Άμποτ είναι έτοιμη να μεταρρυθμίσει το σημερινό καθεστώς.

Να σημειώσουμε εδώ ότι, τόσο η ASIO όσο και η ομοσπονδιακή αστυνομία, ζητούν από την κυβέρνηση να ακολουθήσει το παράδειγμα της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας και να υποχρεώσει τις τηλεφωνικές και ιντερνετικές εταιρίες να διατηρούν όλα τα στοιχεία για πολύ μεγαλύτερο χρονικό διάστημα.
Οι μυστικές υπηρεσίες υποστηρίζουν ότι όλες πληροφορίες θα πρέπει να διατηρούνται προκειμένου να εναρμονιστεί η σχετική νομοθεσία με τις εξελίξεις στην τεχνολογία, μιας και η μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των ανθρώπων σήμερα επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους ηλεκτρονικά και όχι τηλεφωνικά όπως στο παρελθόν.
Παράλληλα ισχυρίζονται ότι σε κρίσιμες έρευνες, για να αποκτήσουν οι διωκτικές Αρχές τις απαραίτητες αποδείξεις για τη σύλληψη και καταδίκη των τρομοκρατών πρέπει να έχουν τη δυνατότητα πρόσβασης σε αυτές τις πληροφορίες.

Τέλος, πριν η κυβέρνηση προχωρήσει στις νέες αλλαγές που σχεδιάζει θα πρέπει να περιμένει και τις προτάσεις της κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής που ερευνά τον τρόπο λειτουργίας των τηλεπικοινωνιών και τις παρεμβάσεις σε αυτές που καθορίζονται από τη νομοθεσία.
Η ASIO όσο και η ομοσπονδιακή αστυνομία ζητούν από την κυβέρνηση να ακολουθήσει το παράδειγμα της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας.

Λόγω των αλλαγών που εξήγγειλε στον τομέα της Τριτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης.

Μπορεί οι ψηφοφόροι να έδωσαν «εύκολα» το χρίσμα της εξουσίας στον Συνασπισμό, αλλά όλα δείχνουν ότι μετά την κατάθεση του πρώτου προϋπολογισμού της κυβέρνησης Άμποτ, μεγάλο μέρος του εκλογικού σώματος τής γυρίζει τις πλάτες του.

Το τελευταίο σημείο «τριβής» μεταξύ κυβέρνησης και ψηφοφόρων είναι οι αλλαγές που εξήγγειλε στον τομέα της Ανώτατης Εκπαίδευσης, τις οποίες, σύμφωνα με τα όσα αποκαλύπτει πρόσφατη τηλεφωνική δημοσκόπηση σε 23 εκλογικές περιφέρειες της χώρας, οι ψηφοφόροι απορρίπτουν μαζικά.
Συγκεκριμένα, το 69% αυτών που έλαβαν μέρος στην τηλεφωνική έρευνα δήλωσε ότι τάσσεται κατά των αυξήσεων στο κόστος των διδάκτρων ενώ το 65% αυτών δήλωσε ότι είναι κατά των περικοπών στη χρηματοδότηση των πανεπιστημίων από την κυβέρνηση, περικοπές οι οποίες -σύμφωνα με τα όσα εξήγγειλε η κυβέρνηση- θα φτάσουν το 20% σε σχέση με τα χρήματα που λαμβάνουν αυτή τη στιγμή τα ανώτατα ιδρύματα της χώρας.

Στην έρευνα που διεξήχθη σε όλες τις Πολιτείες της χώρας μόνο ένα 28% των ψηφοφόρων που ερωτήθηκαν δήλωσε ότι στηρίζει τις αλλαγές που προωθεί η κυβέρνηση στην ανώτατη εκπαίδευση, αναφέροντας ότι βλέπουν θετικά τη χρηματοδότηση ιδιωτικών πανεπιστημίων από την κυβέρνηση.
Η αποδοκιμασία των ψηφοφόρων στις συγκεκριμένες εκλογικές περιφέρειες μεταφράζεται σε μείωση των ψήφων του Συνασπισμού κατά 10% περίπου στις έδρες αυτές.
Μεταξύ των 24.000 ψηφοφόρων που έλαβαν μέρος στην δημοσκόπηση είναι και αυτοί της έδρας Sturt της Νότιας Αυστραλίας, στην οποία εκλέγεται ο υπουργός Παιδείας, Christopher Pyne. Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα της δημοσκόπησης, αν γίνονταν εκλογές τώρα ο κ. Pyne θα έχανε την έδρα του καθώς η ψήφος του υποχώρησε κατά 15%.

Η δημοσκόπηση έγινε για λογαριασμό του Σωματείου Τριτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης, μεταξύ της 14ης και 29ης Ιουνίου.
Σύμφωνα με την ομοσπονδιακή πρόεδρο του Σωματείου, Jeannie Rea, τα αποτελέσματα της δημοσκόπησης αποκαλύπτουν ότι οι ψηφοφόροι είναι πληροφορημένοι και ανησυχούν για τις αλλαγές στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση πολύ περισσότερο απ’ όσο η κυβέρνηση Άμποτ θεωρούσε ότι θα ανησυχούσαν.
«Οι γονείς δεν θέλουν τις πόρτες της τριτοβάθμιες κλειστές για τα παιδιά τους, λόγω του κόστους των διδάκτρων. Ούτε όμως και φορτωμένα με χρέη που θα ξεπερνούν τις $100.000 με το που θα αποφοιτήσουν» ανέφερε η κ. Rea.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι τα λεγόμενα της προέδρου επαληθεύονται και από το ποσοστό των πολιτών που επιδοκιμάζουν τον ίδιο τον πρωθυπουργό, Tony Abbott, στην έδρα του, το οποίο κυμαίνεται στο… -31%. Αντιθέτως το ποσοστό επιδοκιμασίας ενός άλλου ευυπόληπτου από το εκλογικό σώμα, βουλευτή του, του Darren Chester, που εκλέγεται στην έδρα Gippsland της Βικτώριας, κυμαίνεται στο 31%.

Αξίζει, τέλος, να σημειωθεί ότι στην πρώτη πεντάδα των βουλευτών το έργο των οποίων επιδοκιμάζεται και χαίρει της εμπιστοσύνης των ψηφοφόρων τους, ο κ. Darren είναι ο μοναδικός βουλευτής του Συνασπισμού.

Celebrated Greek Australian actress and singer Maria Mercedes to tackle the central role in Master Class for Melbourne audiences.

While Hollywood is waiting for Meryl Streep to take on the role of a famous soprano in the new HBO series, celebrated Greek Australian performer Maria Mercedes will be taking on the role of a lifetime as the legendary Greek American opera singer Maria Callas.

With leading roles in the Australian premieres of Nine, Sunset Boulevard and Love Never Dies, as well as films such as Head On and Dreams for Life, Maria
Mercedes takes on one of the greatest challenges of her career in a new production of Terrence McNally’s Tony award-winning play Master Class.

“Maria Callas is my dream role,” says Mercedes, “and I couldn’t be more thrilled to honour the life of a woman I admire not only for her incredible artistry and passion, but for the daring, honest way she lived her life.”

Acting as the launching production of new theatre company Left Bauer, Master Class will be staged at Melbourne’s fortyfivedownstairs in August, and tells the story of Maria Callas’ 1971 visit to New York’s Juilliard School of Music.

“At the time, Callas’ career had drawn to a close, her voice a shadow of its former glory,” says Cameron Lukey, artistic director of the company.

“Six years later, her death at the age of fifty-three sealed her legend as a real life tragic heroine.”

Featuring three of Melbourne’s most exciting young operatic talents, Master Class sees Callas prod and provoke her students in a searing, funny and touching depiction of a woman who knows the sacrifices required to achieve the dream.

“Forty years on, Callas’ story as a woman forced to choose between her professional and personal life remains as relevant as ever,” says Lukey.

For host Nikos Andronicos, the Greek islands odyssey was also tracking his family roots.

The new three-part documentary series Greeks of the Sea, to premiere on SBS ONE, tells a story of Greek mariners and their love affair with the sea.

For 30 odd years, Phil Kiely and Peter Pentz have been in love with Greece and its seas. Since Phil’s first trip to Greece as a university graduate in 1976, till two and a half years ago, in his mind he was working on a movie that would feature that unusual love affair Greek people have with sea.

On the other side, Peter Pentz – a South African turned Sydney resident and a keen sailor, spent the last seven summers sailing the Greek waters, and falling in love with the local people, their maritime skills and ingenuity over and over again.

Kiely and Pentz are now the two executive producers of the new three-part series Greeks of the Sea, which premieres on SBS ONE on Saturday 19 July.
For young journalist and director Tom Nicol, it took one trip to Greece on board with Kiely and Pentz to witness their fascination with the tight connection Greek people had with the sea.

From Hellenic Coast Guard to local fisherman, to ferry captains of a seafaring nation, Peter describes it as a ‘love affair’ with sea, a relationship that has stood the test of time, provided security, and – now more than ever before – provided prosperity to the Greek people.

“There is necessity to travel by sea – to get goods and people from one place to another – but it’s more than just that in Greece. At a time when the country is really struggling, one of the things Greek people can really be proud of – is for a small nation to be the number one shipping nation in the world; it’s just remarkable,” writer and director of the series, Tom Nicol, tells Neos Kosmos.

“For both Phil and Peter, their dream was to create a movie about this connection to the sea. I thought it would make a great TV series; there was too much there for just a movie.”

For the host, Greek Australian filmmaker, actor and musician Nikos Andronicos, this journey was also a deeply personal one: a century ago, Nikos’ great-great grandfather was a fisherman on the island of Kythera.

Greeks of the Sea sees Nikos return to his ancestral homeland to discover what has always set its mariners – like his grandfather – apart from their competitors and opponents.

The three-part SBS series is about boats, islands and the sea – but most importantly it’s about people associated with those islands, boats and the Aegean – as Tom Nicol puts it.

During their visit to more than two dozen Greek islands, the crew encounters the most acclaimed mariners and true sea dogs – from wealthy shipowners, to village fisherman, from patrol officers to sponge divers, from traditional boat builders to experienced captains, who – as well as countless other Greeks – say they were born ‘with salty blood’.

“That’s what our story is about. The sea dogs. They all have such a wonderful story to tell. We interviewed one of the most prominent and wealthiest ship owners, who provides a fascinating insight into the mind and lifestyle and hard work associated with being a Greek shipowner.

“But then we also speak to a fisherman on a tiny island who is struggling to put food on his table every night; to a traditional boat builder who makes wooden boats that aren’t in demand anymore… We cover everything… The ‘everyday’ people and ‘important’ people. And the one thing that connects them is their connection to the sea and how they speak about it. The word that comes out more so than any other in regards to this is ‘respect’.

“If you talked to a bunch of Australians and asked what they liked about sea, they would think you were crazy. But every person we spoke to about their love for the sea in Greece said it was part of them, they talked about their respect for it and what it meant to them through their lives,” Tom says.

And for Greek people, the sea meant livelihood, safety, even spirituality. When Nikos Andronicos travels to Amorgos’ spectacular Byzantine monastery, one of the church’s most prominent priests – once a seaman himself – tells Nikos it’s a spirituality that’s shared among all Greek seafarers.

“We speak to a senior member of the Greek Orthodox church, as he takes us to a beautiful monastery of the Virgin Mary in Amorgos. He explains the special connection that seafarers have with God with only one word – fear. The sea is a dangerous place out there.”

Finally, the crew travels to the island of Paros, meeting a local fisherman who was instrumental in saving hundreds of lives after a passenger ferry crashed off the island in 2000. His is a story of great courage, bravery and heroism in the face of immense tragedy. Dozens of people lost their lives, but hundreds of lives were saved, with the skills and ingenuity of the fishermen of Paros, who got in their boats and motored back and forth picking up survivors.

As Nikos meets each character, he experiences first-hand the struggles they face today as the country endures its most severe financial and social challenges in generations.

Greeks of the Sea is far from a history lesson. It’s about the future, and – oddly enough – it doesn’t focus on the crisis.

“When I first became involved, I thought, we can’t ignore the fact that Greece is in a bit of trouble, and everyone that is watching our show – unfortunately – the first thing that comes to their mind is that Greece is out of money and the people are struggling.

“But in the series we contextualise the crisis as a moment in a country with millennia of history and fascinating stories of triumph, so we don’t focus on the crisis solely. I guess that one of our motivations was that we’ve been to Greece, we’ve seen there are some problems, but it is still a remarkable and very warm place to visit, whose people will welcome you with open arms.

“There is real genuineness and authenticity in the way you are welcomed on the Greek islands; there should be nothing to stop people from going to Greece and we hope that our series will show that it is still a beautiful place to visit with the most hospitable people you’ll ever meet.”

The word that kept coming up during his time in Greece – and that Tom Nicol says the English translation doesn’t do it justice – is filoxenia.

“And we felt it. Anyone will feel that in Greece.

“What fascinated me personally was the people – never before have I been to a place where people are so welcoming, friendly and honest. They speak from
the heart not from the head, and that’s really refreshing,” Tom says.

“There is a real generosity of spirit in Greece.”

Greeks of the Sea intertwines fascinating and moving stories of the sea within a rich tapestry of Greek culture, hospitality, religion, history and mythology.

Taking in breathtakingly beautiful islands and stepping aboard spectacular ships, viewers are in for a visual treat.

Greece will face Montenegro in the final of the European League.

The national team proved there is some pulse in the long-suffering sport of volleyball, as it secured its entry to the final of the European League by upsetting the odds and Slovenia.

The Greeks of coach Sotiris Drikos had lost 3-2 in the first leg at Thessaloniki but they bounced back to beat host Slovenia 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22) and advance to the tournament’s final in style.

The victory at Maribor means that Greece will face Montenegro in the final of the European League, the second-tier competition that offers its winner a ticket to the top tournament, the World League.

Dimitris Tzourits led the Greeks with his impressive showing, scoring 31 points on the night.

Australia is seeking a number of quality international fixtures in the lead-up to January’s Asian Cup which will be hosted on the east coast.

The Socceroos’ desire for more high-quality matches is gaining momentum with a friendly against Belgium locked in for September 4.

Belgium announced the friendly on its official Twitter account.

“We’ll be welcoming the @Socceroos for a friendly on September 4th ! Prepping for the @UEFAeuro qualifiers. Excited !”.

The European side had a strong but disappointing World Cup, losing 1-0 to eventual finalists Argentina at the quarter-final stage in a keenly contested match.

The Belgians are ranked 11th in the world.

Australia is seeking a number of quality international fixtures in the lead-up to January’s Asian Cup which will be hosted on the east coast.

The Socceroos were eliminated at the group stage in Brazil after three successive losses but generally garnered plaudits with their inexperienced team pushing both Chile and The Netherlands before a 3-0 loss to 2010 champions Spain.

Football Federation Australia has yet to announce the fixture, to be played in Belgium.

The death of the great white shark near Geraldton is being investigated by Fisheries.

A shark seen thrashing about in the shallows of a Geraldton beach and later washed up dead, died because it had a sea lion stuck in its throat.

The death of the tagged great white shark near Geraldton was investigated by the Department of Fisheries.

A video of the shark’s behaviour was posted on YouTube on July 12 and has since had more than 17,000 views.

The shark was found washed ashore at Coronation Beach, about 28 kilometres north of Geraldton.

The shark was seen thrashing about before it was found dead.

Research scientists travelled to Geraldton in an effort to determine what happened to the shark.

Principal research scientist Dr Rory McAuley said the shark had been fitted with an acoustic tag, which had been handed in to the department.

He said the four-metre male shark had no visible signs of injury or disease, however it appeared the shark had a large Australian sea lion stuck inside its throat.

“This could explain why the shark was exhibiting such unusual behaviour in shallow waters off Coronation Beach. It is possible that the shark was trying to dislodge the blockage,” Dr McAuley said.

“Such a large object may have damaged the shark’s internal organs or impeded water flow into his gills, contributing to his death. Alternatively, the shark may have accidentally become stranded in his attempts to get rid of the obstruction.”

The department has also confirmed that the shark was tagged in South Australia in January this year.

“Confirmation of when and where this shark was tagged demonstrates the extraordinarily mobile nature of this species,” Dr McAuley said.

Tissue and vertebral samples were taken for future genetic, age and growth, ecological and population assessment studies.

Tash Tapper, who captured the footage of the shark while at the beach with her family on Saturday said it was a surreal experience to see a shark acting so strangely and coming so close to the beach.

She said police were at the beach after being made aware that a shark was in the area, they had earlier warned surfers to get out of the water following a warning from the Fisheries Department of a shark sighting in the area.

Mrs Tapper said she watched the shark swim in close to the shore, back out and back in for almost two hours.

She said while initially onlookers tried to assist the shark when it beached itself on a reef, they soon realised the shark was not well and might not be able to be helped.

“To me it seemed it was coming in to die,” Mrs Tapper said.

The current shark tagging and monitoring program in WA began in an experimental phase in 2008 with a more dedicated and comprehensive white shark monitoring program established in late 2011.

The program is designed to record information about shark behaviour in WA and is part of a greater shark mitigation scheme introduced following a spate of fatal shark attacks in the state.

The network monitors more than 300 sharks with external tags, less than half of those are great white sharks, the species identified as being responsible for recent fatal attacks in WA and some also have internal tags.
