Kostas Stafylidis moves to Fulham

stafylidis

Stafylidis comes in after countryman Giorgos Karagounis was released and doubt still clouds Kostas Mitroglou’s fate.

West London club Fulham, relegated from the Premier League last season, signed Greek international left-back Kostas Stafylidis on loan from Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen.

The Championship club said it had an option to make the transfer of the 20-year-old, who has one cap for Greece, permanent at the end of the season.
Stafylidis made his mark in PAOK back home, playing as a left back or left midfielder and getting international attention playing in the 2012 UEFA European
Under-19 Football Championship.

Stafylidis comes in with countryman Giorgos Karagounis having been released at the end of last season.

He joins Kostas Mitroglou at Craven Cottage, although the Greek international striker is more than likely moving elsewhere this summer.

The arrival of Stafylidis, however, also sees Fulham boss Felix Magath step up his revamp of the team.

The club also secured former Leeds striker Ross McCormack for $17 million for a four year deal.

Varvaris extols Restart benefits

vravarisabbott

Barton MP promotes job creation agenda.

Federal Coalition MP Nickolas Varvaris took the podium with Prime Minister Tony Abbott last week in an effort to spruik the government’s job creation credentials.

The former Kogarah mayor, who won the seat of Barton in last year’s election, appeared with the PM and Assistant Minister for Employment Luke Hartsuyker to officially launch the Restart program in the Barton electorate.

Restart provides a $10,000 incentive to employers to hire and retain mature age job-seekers – aged 50 and over – who have been in receipt of income support for six months or more.

The Restart program is part of the Abbott government’s Economic Action Strategy, which the Coalition believes will create new jobs, and encourage
Australians to improve their skills to get into, or re-enter, the workforce.

Speaking after the launch, Mr Varvaris said that because of the ageing nature of the Australian population, “increasing workforce participation is critical to the future prosperity of our nation and my electorate. The government recognises that mature-aged workers have a valuable contribution to make to the workplace.”

Mr Varvaris said he was delighted that the program’s launch had taken place in the community he represents.

“It was fantastic to launch an initiative from which my electorate of Barton, and the Australian economy as a whole, stands to benefit greatly,” he said.

With 45 per cent of Barton’s residents having been born overseas, the largest single ethnic group in the electorate is Greek, with around 20,000 residents.

The Restart program – worth $524.8 million over four years – is one measure, says the government, for getting more Australians into employment.

The Coalition’s pre-election pledges on employment committed them to create one million new jobs within five years. Other programs to be introduced include a revamped Work for the Dole program, Relocation Assistance – to support job seekers in moving to areas where work is available; and the Job Commitment Bonus, which provides $6,500 to young, long-term unemployed people if they get a job, and stay off welfare for two years.

A report from the Deloitte consultancy released this month singled out six industries – representing one third of Australia’s $1.4 trillion economy – which are most vulnerable to changes in job security due to the growth of new digitally-driven work practices. The sectors identified are retail, finance, media, arts and recreation, real estate, and information technology.

A recent study by US employment analysts CareerCast says that worldwide, the most endangered jobs in 2014 are those of a postman, farmer, forestry worker, travel agent, flight attendant, print worker, tax examiner and newspaper reporter.

Greek Australians and homosexuality

Vazourakis02

Michael Vazourakis shares his experiences about ‘coming out’ to a Greek family.

Homosexuality has been rife in the media of late. Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe ‘came out’ after years of speculation and AFL commentator Brian Taylor made a highly derogatory comment live on air last week about an AFL player.

Homosexuality can be a very taboo subject in most Greek Australian homes, especially for more conservative Greeks.

Michael Vazourakis is an ordinary 23-year-old Greek Australian. His parents, now divorced, were both born in Greece – his mother in Gargalianoi,
Peloponnese and his father in Chania, Crete.

Michael, like most Greek Australians, has grown up in a traditional Greek environment, but his story is more unique than most – he is gay.

He came out at the very young age of 15 and spoke to Neos Kosmos about all things ‘gay’ – from his experiences ‘coming out’ to a Greek family, to homophobia and how society deals with homosexuality.

It was an Australian movie, Head On, featuring Alex Dimitriades, about the tale of a 19-year-old Greek Australian struggling with his homosexuality that inspired him. He says his sister was his biggest support and that coming out at such a young age was something that he’s proud of and would never change. For him it gave him control over his life.

“I watched that [Head On] when I was younger and after it finished I kind of just started breaking down bawling my eyes out because I related to it, the culture thing, I’m a Greek Australian as well, and even though his life wasn’t my life, just the fact that we had that in common, and he was gorgeous and I was like yeah that’s me (laughs).

“I broke down, I started crying and my sister had come home and I spoke to her and go ‘this is what I am and I’m scared’. She gave me a hug and started crying with me, and she said ‘I know and don’t worry we’ll be able to take on anybody’,” he says.

That was the biggest step for him, telling the first person, and one of the closest people in his life, about his sexuality. From there he went on to tell the rest of his family and friends.

“I told my mum and then it snowballed from there. I started telling friends, then I came out at school, I had decent support there as well, despite the fact that I used to get a lot of crap at school, so it made it all bearable. My friends made everything bearable for me at school.”

Despite support from his mother’s side of the family and (for the most part) high school friends, he did face adversaries, and some of those were his own family.

“[I] had extremists. I had my dad and his side of the family, they didn’t take it too well.

“My dad reacted very negatively, and we didn’t speak for close to a year afterwards, so I did have the kind of bad side of life. Friends at school, people I actually expected to stick around didn’t, and the ones that I didn’t expect were the ones that came through and accepted me. It was really strange.”

When he was asked about his relationship with his father, and his father’s family, Michael says despite the initial difficulties, they have come around to his sexuality.

“They are a lot better now yes. I’m living back at my dad’s house so it can’t be that bad.”

“It is something that can’t be spoken about too much. They [his father’s family] make jokes, which is a good step for me… I like the jokes because it’s the way my family kind of operates. When you can joke about something you can come to accept it.

“The best way that I put it is he [his father] doesn’t accept it, he deals with it. But given the fact that he’s 64 years old and has been stuck in his ways for many years and is quite stubborn, being Greeks as we are, it’s a hell of a lot of progress in just under 10 years. It’s just that people fear what they don’t know.”

And he says that the topic of Greeks and homosexuality is a tricky one, one they do not accept very well.

“I feel that the pride of Greeks gets in the way of any kind of acceptance. That’s just from my own personal experience.

“On the positive side of things I’ve never had a person of the Greek Australian community, or any kind of Greek that I know of, turn around to me and go ‘you poofter’, I’ve never had that kind of aggression. But just like anything else they’re guarded, they’re just not sure about it.

“I went to Kinisi last weekend and there was no trouble. I was socialising with people and when I told them or when it came up in conversation it’s not so awkward. They were actually really good with it and I was shocked, because all preconceived ideas I had in my head about the Greek community changed a little bit – but they were younger men. For the older men, it’s the old saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks… as cliché as it is I think it applies.”
He says he always tries to represent his community when dealing with people.

“I’ve always made it my mission that if I’m the first gay person that a person’s going to meet then it’s my job to represent my community. If I hit on the person, or make them uncomfortable in some kind of way, that’s how they’re going to look at my community because that’s their first experience. It’s my job to kind of disarm them and to let them know, ‘this is how I am, yes I like men, but it’s got nothing to do with you so relax’.

When he was asked about the burden he puts on himself, he says that it is a necessary step to bridge social gaps.

“I think it’s the responsibility that all of us should take on, it’s something that if we’re hoping to achieve this kind of standing in society and hoping to integrate in this way and to become equal, that’s kind of the burden you have to bear.”

Although he’s seeing improvements within the Greek Australian community, he says that the Australia community holistically needs to be more accepting.
“We are at a point where…. we’re disillusioned, we’re like ‘it’s accepted now, it’s fine, it’s all good’ and it’s just not the case. There is still so much work to be done. Don’t get me wrong we have come a long way and it’s a great thing but I don’t think complacency is the answer.”

For Michael homophobia is something he experiences, for the most part, on a daily occurrence.

“I wish I could say that it was once a week but I would say nearly daily you would experience it, or you would come across something or someone who speaks a certain way or who sort of behaves a certain way and you could perceive it as homophobic.”

His solution to further integration and acceptance towards homosexuals is a pragmatic one.

“Demystify it! That’s the sort of approach I make personally in my life with friends, it’s just to demystify the whole thing. The whole point of our community is to celebrate diversity and we do it proudly and that’s a great thing but there needs to be some focus on what we have in common, not just what we have differently.”

Migrant boat massacre: Italy arrests five for murder of more than 100 thrown overboard

23-Grecale-APv2

Fighting on deck caused by suffocating fumes saw migrants stabbed and thrown into the sea

Italian police have arrested five men on suspicion of murdering and throwing overboard more than 100 migrants as they attempted to cross from Africa to Europe.

Police said the survivors of the boat journey claimed they witnessed a massacre on board the vessel when their fellow passengers were assaulted and tossed into the sea.

The incident happened when the hull of the boat began to fill with poisonous fumes and people became unable to breathe. Panic ran through those below deck and a fight broke out as people tried to escape and find air.

To keep the migrants below deck, five men began stabbing and assaulting passengers at random before throwing the passengers overboard, and threatening others not to react or to suffer the same fate, police said.

“In a matter of minutes the heat became unbearable and the air was unbreathable due to the fumes from the motor,” police said in a statement. “Desperation drove the prisoners to force open the door and climb onto deck where the tragedy occurred.”

Police estimated that approximately 60 of the migrants were assaulted and thrown into the sea, while around 50 are thought to have been thrown straight out of the boat.

The bodies said to be thrown overboard have not been recovered.

The boat, which was thought to have held up to 600 migrants on board, the majority of whom were believed to be Syrian, was intercepted by Italian and Maltese authorities on Saturday, at which point 18 people were found dead in a tangled mass of bodies in the hull.

The dead were thought to have suffocated from the fumes emitted from the old boat’s engine, while one other person died on the way to hospital.

The five men; two Moroccans, a Saudi Arabian, a Syrian and a Palestinian, have been accused of carrying out the murders. They are expected to be assigned lawyers. Two more men have been charged for people smuggling.

Αυστραλία: Ο Hockey ήθελε να «βάλει το χέρι του» ακόμα πιο «βαθιά στην τσέπη μας»

hockey

Όπως αποκαλύπτει η δημοσιογράφος της Fairfax, Madonna King, στο βιβλίο της “Hockey: Not your Average Joe” -για τη συγγραφή του οποίου συνεργάστηκε με τον ίδιο τον κ.

Golden Dawn using legal tricks to delay trial

images1K6ARV99

If the planned trial is put off beyond November, many of the suspects may be able to secure their release as they will likely have served the maximum pretrial custody time.

MPs and members of Golden Dawn are using legal tactics to drag out a criminal investigation into the neofascist party and postpone the beginning of a trial planned for November so that suspects can be released from pretrial custody before judges can decide their fate, Kathimerini understands.

Of some 30 MPs and party members who are in pretrial custody in connection with a string of crimes including the murder of leftist rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a party supporter last year, more than 10 have applied for conditional release.

The detainees have the right to make such appeals but the fact that a large number of them are being made at the same time suggests that the aim is to obstruct magistrates from concluding their investigation.

If the planned launch of the trial is put off beyond November, many of the suspects may be able to secure their release as they will likely have served the maximum of 18 months in pretrial custody before the trial concludes.

Another obstructive tactic suspects are using is to propose new witnesses for the magistrates to examine. According to sources, the two magistrates leading the investigation, Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou, have been asked to question at least 13 new witnesses. Although the suspects’ tactics appear to be abusive, according to judicial sources, the law is on their side.

A recent proposal for a legislative amendment that would give magistrates more room for manoeuvre was rejected.

Hellenic Museum joins Open House event

open%20house%2001

The Hellenic Museum open this weekend.

For the sixth year in a row, Melbourne will open the doors of its most famous landmarks and historic buildings for this year’s Open House event.

Apart from Greek inspired architecture that is a constant of the show – the State Library, Parliament House, the Shrine of Remembrance – joining the Open
House will once again be the Hellenic Museum.

On the weekend of 26 and 27 July, the Hellenic Museum opens its doors for those interested in exploring the former Royal Mint.

Since the first surveyance of Melbourne city in 1836, the site has played a significant role – as a police barracks, location for bazaars and flower shows, and even as a cricket pitch.

For five years now, Open House has been unearthing urban environments and rediscovering city architecture.

Open House Melbourne will take place on 26 and 27 July and throughout the month of July – with film screenings, talks, art installations, and even an archaeological dig. Over 100 buildings will be open for visitors during the Open House weekend.

‘No safe place for civilians’ in Gaza, says UN, as child death toll reaches 149

Geneva: Palestinian civilians in densely-populated Gaza have no place to hide from Israel’s military offensive and children are paying the heaviest price, the United Nations said.

The overwhelming majority of people killed so far in the conflict are Palestinians, including 149 Gaza children, the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Tuesday. Gaza’s Health Ministry said 155 children had been killed.

At a United Nations Security Council meeting, the Palestinian envoy to the UN held up photographs of children slain in Gaza and read out the names of the dead as he pleaded for action from the council.

”On behalf of the Palestinian people, we ask: What is the international community doing to stop this bloodletting, to stop Israel’s atrocities?” Riyad Mansour said during a debate on the Gaza crisis on Tuesday.

He showed photographs of families overcome with grief and of children’s corpses, and read out the names of young victims who lost their lives. ”Umama Al-Hayyeh, age 9; Dima Isleem, age 2; Mohamad Ayyad, age 2; Rahaf Abu Jumaa, age 4 …”

More than 900 Palestinian children are also reported to have been injured, according to UNICEF

Less than a quarter of all casualties are thought to be Hamas militants, charity Save the Children said.

”This is why we described the ongoing operation as a war on children,” charity official Osama Damo said.

”According to an assessment by aid workers on the ground, at least 107,000 children need psycho-social support for the trauma they are experiencing such as death, injury or loss of their homes,” Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said in Geneva.

Aid agencies point out that, unlike in other wars, Palestinians, enclosed by the security fence around Gaza, cannot flee.

”There is literally no safe place for civilians,” Mr Laerke said.

The death toll is rising in the coastal enclave which has an estimated 4500 people per square kilometre, he said. The priority for aid agencies was protecting civilians, and evacuating and treating the wounded.

Nearly 500 homes have been destroyed by Israeli air strikes and 100,000 people have sought shelter in schools of the UN Relief and Works Agency where they need food, water and mattresses, he said.

”This number continues to increase by the hour,”  the agency said on Tuesday, raising its emergency funding appeal to $US115 million ($122 million) from $US60 million.

The agency also said a girls school housing refugees had suffered a ”direct hit from Israeli shelling” on Tuesday. It was unclear whether any casualties had been inflicted.

Israel began air strikes on the coastal strip on July 8, saying it wanted to halt missile fire out of Gaza by Hamas militants, and launched a ground offensive last Thursday.

Twenty-nine Israelis, 27 of them soldiers, have died.

Yesterday, an air strike destroyed six floors of Salam Tower in the centre of Gaza City, killing at least 11 people including Ibrahim Al-Kilani, a professor of engineering, his wife and their five children. All had fled from Shujaiya, where more than 70 people died in the biggest Israeli bombardment of the war on Sunday.

Israel says that Hamas bears responsibility for civilian deaths because it launches rockets from and stores weapons in civilian areas.

”All civilian casualties are unintended by us, but intended by Hamas,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday. ”They use telegenically dead Palestinians for their cause.”

The World Health Organisation said that 18 health facilities in Gaza have been damaged, including three hospitals.

Hospitals in northern Gaza have been overwhelmed by high numbers of trauma cases and their inadequate supplies, it said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, guardian of the rules of war, condemned an Israeli attack on the Al-Aqsa hospital, which it said had come under ”direct fire at least four times”.

Warring parties are obliged under international humanitarian law to protect medical personnel, ambulances and facilities, the committee said.
