Η τραγωδία της Helios δίνει απαντήσεις για την πτήση ΜΗ370 (;)

Το εξαφανισμένο Boeing των Μαλαισιανών Αερογραμμών πιστεύεται τώρα ότι τις τελευταίες ώρες πετούσε πάνω από τον Ινδικό Ωκεανό σε αυτόματο πιλότο και με ένα πλήρωμα που δεν ανταποκρινόταν, αποκάλυψαν οι Αρχές της Αυστραλίας, δίνοντας νέα στοιχεία στη δημοσιότητα και φέρνοντας ως παράδειγμα για το τι μπορεί να συνέβη το τραγικό αεροπορικό δυστύχημα της Helios.

Οι αξιωματούχοι δήλωσαν ότι πιστεύουν πως το αεροπλάνο πετούσε στον αυτόματο πιλότο σε όλη τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού στον Ινδικό Ωκεανό μέχρι που έμεινε χωρίς καύσιμα.

Τα νέα στοιχεία βασίζονται στην ευθεία πορεία που φέρεται να ακολούθησε το Boeing, όπως δείχνουν οι ηλεκτρονικές «χειραψίες» που αντάλλασσε περιοδικά με δορυφόρους.

«Είναι πολύ, πολύ πιθανό ότι το αεροσκάφος πετούσε στον αυτόματο πιλότο, διαφορετικά δεν θα μπορούσε να είχε ακολουθήσει αυτή την ομαλή πορεία που έχει προσδιοριστεί από τα ευρήματα στους δορυφόρους» είπε ο υπουργός Συγκοινωνιών και υπαρχηγός της κυβέρνησης, Βάρεν Τρους, μιλώντας σε δημοσιογράφους στην Καμπέρα.

Παράλληλα, ανακοινώθηκε ότι η αναζήτηση για το χαμένο Boeing μεταφέρεται νοτιότερα.
Σε έκθεση που εξηγεί την απόφαση αυτή, οι αρχές της Αυστραλίας αφήνουν να εννοηθεί ότι το πλήρωμα βρισκόταν σε κατάσταση που δεν μπορούσε να αντιδράσει, η οποία πιθανώς να προκλήθηκε από την έλλειψη οξυγόνου.

«Το σενάριο αυτό φαίνεται να ταιριάζει στα στοιχεία που έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας για το τελευταίο κομμάτι της πτήσης ΜΗ370» ανέφερε η έκθεση, φέρνοντας ως παράδειγμα και άλλα αεροπορικά δυστυχήματα στα οποία το πλήρωμα δεν μπορούσε να αντιδράσει λόγω έλλειψης οξυγόνου (το φαινόμενο είναι γνωστό ως υποξία).
Ένα από τα τραγικά δυστυχήματα που μελέτησαν οι ειδικοί ήταν εκείνο της Helios. Το επιβατικό αεροσκάφος της ιδιωτικής κυπριακής εταιρίας κατέπεσε στις 14 Αυγούστου 2005 και συνετρίβη παρασύροντας στον θάνατο τους 115 επιβάτες και το 6μελες πλήρωμα στην περιοχή Κοτρώνι Βαρνάβα Γραμματικού.

Αν και οι ειδικοί δηλώνουν βέβαιοι ότι η πτήση MH370 κατέπεσε στον Ινδικό Ωκεανό, αναπάντητο παραμένει το ερώτημα γιατί παρεξέκλινε δραματικά από την πορεία του.
Η επιχείρηση αναζήτησης του αεροσκάφους συνεχίζεται, αλλά ο αντιπρόεδρος της κυβέρνησης προειδοποίησε ότι «θα είναι μεγάλη πρόκληση και πολύ σύνθετη». Ο ίδιος τόνισε: «Μπορεί να είμαστε τυχεροί και να το βρούμε την πρώτη ώρα ή την πρώτη ημέρα. Αλλά η επιχείρηση θα μπορούσε να διαρκέσει άλλους δώδεκα μήνες».

Ο κ. Le στο πλευρό του πρωθυπουργού της Νότιας Αυστραλίας κ. Jay Weatherill καθώς ο δεύτερος ανακοινώνει το νέο αξίωμά του

Έφτασε στην Αυστραλία με τον ίδιο τρόπο που φθάνουν σήμερα πολλοί αναζητητές ασύλου δηλαδή με ένα σαπιοκάραβο.

O κ. Hieu Van Le, που έφτασε στην Αυστραλία ως πρόσφυγας από το Βιετνάμ πριν από 36 χρόνια, είναι ο νέος κυβερνήτης της Ν. Αυστραλίας. Ο κ. Le, λογιστής στο επάγγελμα, είναι ο πρώτος πολιτειακός κυβερνήτης ασιατικής καταγωγής και έφτασε στην Αυστραλία με τον ίδιο τρόπο που φθάνουν σήμερα πολλοί αναζητητές ασύλου δηλαδή με ένα σαπιοκάραβο.

Ο 60χρονος νέος κυβερνήτης της Πολιτείας, εκτελούσε μέχρι πρότινος καθήκοντα αναπληρωτή κυβερνήτη και αντικαθιστά τον υποναύαρχο, Kevin Scarce.
«Έφτασα στην Αυστραλία με μία αόρατη βαλίτσα γεμάτη όνειρα. Ήθελα να ζήσω μία ειρηνική και δημιουργική ζωή με ασφάλεια. Τα όνειρά μου έγιναν πραγματικότητα αλλά ποτέ δεν θα μπορούσα να ονειρευτών ότι κάποια μέρα θα αναλάμβανα αυτό το αξίωμα. Η τιμή που μου έγινε είναι μεγάλη» είπε λίγη ώρα μετά την ανακοίνωση του πρωθυπουργού της Πολιτείας για τα νέα καθήκοντα του κ. Le.

Ο κ. Le -όπως προαναφέραμε- έφτασε στην Αυστραλία με ένα σαπιοκάραβο. Την σύζυγό του Lan την γνώρισε μέσα σε εκείνο το σαπιοκάραβο και σήμερα είναι πατέρας δύο παιδιών. Εκτός από Masters στα Οικονομικά, το Πανεπιστήμιο Adelaide τον έχρισε επίτιμο διδάκτορα το 2011, αναγνωρίζοντας την πολύπλευρη προσφορά του στην ευρύτερη κοινωνία της Πολιτείας. Από το 1991 έως και το 2009 ήταν υψηλόβαθμο διοικητικό στέλεχος της υπηρεσίας Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
Ο κ. Le θα αναλάβει τα νέα του καθήκοντα στις 2 Σεπτεμβρίου.

Συμμαχία των κομμάτων της αντιπολίτευσης κατά των αντιλαϊκών νομοσχεδίων.

Στον αέρα παραμένει ο πρώτος προϋπολογισμός της κυβέρνησης Abbott, καθώς τα κόμματα της αντιπολίτευσης συμπράττουν στη Γερουσία για την καταψήφιση «διορθωτικών» δημοσιονομικών μέτρων, που εξήγγειλε η κυβέρνηση.

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα και οι Πράσινοι καταψήφισαν τη Δευτέρα το κυβερνητικό νομοσχέδιο για την αναπροσαρμογή του φόρου κατανάλωσης καυσίμων στο κόστος ζωής, αφαιρώντας 2,2 δις δολάρια από το έξτρα εισόδημα που στοχεύει η κυβέρνηση.

Η σύμπραξη των Εργατικών με τους Πράσινους εγείρει ερωτηματικά για την τύχη των άλλων νομοσχεδίων της κυβέρνησης καθώς και για την τύχη της ίδιας της κυβέρνησης. Οι Εργατικοί δεσμεύτηκαν να καταψηφίσουν μέτρα δεκάδων δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων που, κατά την κρίση της ηγεσίας της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, πλήττουν τα κατώτερα κοινωνικά στρώματα. Η κοινοβουλευτική ομάδα του Εργατικού Κόμματος αποφάσισε ομόφωνα, σε προχθεσινή συνεδρίασή της, να καταψηφίσει περικοπές των κοινωνικών παροχών ύψους 11,4 δις δολάρια.

Συνολικά, το Εργατικό Κόμμα απορρίπτει δημοσιονομικά μέτρα που θα απέφεραν 25 δις δολάρια. Το μόνο μέτρο που ενέκρινε, μέχρι τώρα το Εργατικό Κόμμα, ήταν ο ειδικός φόρος για την κάλυψη του χρέους (debt levy), που θα πληρώνουν οι πολίτες με ετήσιο εισόδημα 180 χιλ. δολάρια.

Η αρχηγός των Πρασίνων, γερουσιαστής Chris Milne, είχε δεσμευτεί να στηρίξει την αναπροσαρμογή του φόρου καυσίμων στο κόστος ζωής, γι’ αυτό η σύμπραξη του κόμματός της με την αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση χαρακτηρίζεται «υποχρεωτική αναδίπλωση» κατόπιν πίεσης από τα μέλη της κοινοβουλευτικής ομάδας του κόμματος.
Οι πιθανότητες ψήφισης των επίμαχων κυβερνητικών νομοσχεδίων θα περιοριστούν αισθητά αν το κόμμα του Clive Palmer, Palmer United Party (PUP), που από την 1η Ιουλίου θα είναι η ρυθμιστική δύναμη στη γερουσία, συμμαχήσει με τα κόμματα εξουσίας κατά της ψήφισης επίμαχων κυβερνητικών από το ελεγκτικό σώμα του εθνικού κοινοβουλίου.

Η πολιτική του PUP επρόκειτο να αποφασιστεί χθες κατά τη διάρκεια χθεσινοβραδινής συνεδρίασης των τριών γερουσιαστών του κόμματος με τον αρχηγό τους. Ο κ. Palmer δήλωνε χθες στα μέσα ενημέρωσης, ότι «οι αποφάσεις που θα λάβει το κόμμα του θα ωφελήσουν την Αυστραλία και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο».
Υπενθυμίζεται, ότι πολλά νομοσχέδια της κυβέρνησης Abbott -που κατατέθηκαν πριν τον προϋπολογισμό- έχουν «κολλήσει» στη γερουσία. Επιπροσθέτως, μέτρα του προϋπολογισμού ύψους πάνω από 40 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια απειλούνται από την αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση.

Ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten, δηλώνει ότι “το Εργατικό Κόμμα θα συνεχίσει να πολεμά τον άδικο, σαθρό προϋπολογισμό της κυβέρνησης». Η αντιπολίτευση ισχυρίζεται, επικαλούμενη υπολογισμούς του Ινστιτούτου Δημόσιας Διοίκησης του Πανεπιστημίου Καμπέρας, ότι αν υλοποιηθούν τα μέτρα του προϋπολογισμού μία οικογένεια με δύο παιδιά και εισόδημα $65.000 θα επιβαρυνθεί ετησίως $6.000, απώλεια που θα επηρεάσει αρνητικά άμεσα την ποιότητα ζωής της εν λόγω οικογένειας. Η κυβέρνηση αντιπαραθέτει, ότι ο προϋπολογισμός προσφέρει $8.000 στη μέση οικογένεια και κατηγορεί την αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση για «κακόβουλο εκφοβισμό» του λαού.

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα «ενισχύθηκε» από την αρχή της εβδομάδας από τη δημοσκόπηση της AGE/Nielsen Poll (δημοσιεύεται σε άλλη σελίδα), σύμφωνα με την οποία έξι στους δέκα πολίτες θεωρούν τον προϋπολογισμό «άδικο». Οι αριθμοί δείχνουν, ότι ένα και πλέον μήνα μετά την κατάθεση του προϋπολογισμού η κυβέρνηση δεν έχει καταφέρει να πείσει τον αυστραλιανό λαό, ότι «ο προϋπολογισμός είναι σκληρός, αλλά δίκαιος», όπως διατείνονται ο πρωθυπουργός και τα άλλα μέλη της κυβέρνησης.

Επτά ομογενείς συμπεριλαμβάνονται στο φετινό κατάλογο των 200 πλουσιοτέρων Αυστραλών που δημοσιεύει το οικονομικό περιοδικό «BRW».
Σύμφωνα με τον κατάλογο, πλουσιότερη κάτοικος της Αυστραλίας και πλουσιότερη γυναίκα στον κόσμο είναι η Τζίνα Ράινχαρτ, με περιουσία που ξεπερνά τα 20 δις δολάρια!
Στη 45η θέση του καταλόγου -αλλά πλουσιότερος Έλληνας της Αυστραλίας- είναι ο πρώην ιδιοκτήτης της Παναχαϊκής, Κώστας Μακρής, με 940 εκατομμύρια δολάρια (πέρυσι ήταν 900, ενώ τα προηγούμενα χρόνια ο κ. Μακρής ήταν ο μοναδικός ομογενής δισεκατομμυριούχος. Ο Κώστας Μακρής και ο γιος του Ρος, είναι οι μεγαλύτεροι ιδιοκτήτες ακινήτων στη Νότια Αυστραλία -και όχι μόνο. Πρόσφατα, ο κ. Μακρής αγόρασε και το Marina Mirage στο Gold Coast του Κουίνσλαντ.

Στη δεύτερη θέση, από ελληνικής πλευράς, βρίσκεται ο Κέρι Χαρμάνης, με 610 εκατομμύρια δολάρια. (Πέρυσι είχε 590). Ο κ. Χαρμάνης έχει ορυχεία.
Στην 3η θέση είναι η οικογένεια Χάρη Σταμούλη που κατέχει την 86η θέση του συνόλου. Η περιουσία της οικογένειας Σταμούλη ανέρχεται στα 540 εκατομμύρια δολάρια. Αυξήθηκε από πέρυσι, που ήταν 480 εκατομμύρια δολάρια.

Ακολουθεί στη 92η θέση (τέταρτος από άποψη ομογενών ο Θ. Καρύδης, με 500 εκατομμύρια δολάρια έναντι 490 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων πέρσι.
Στην 5η θέση βρίσκεται ο Νικ Πολίτης με 410 εκατομμύρια δολάρια.

Στην 6η θέση των ομογενών Κροίσων είναι ο Γιώργος Κούκης με περιουσία 325 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων. Ο κ. Κούκης, που γεννήθηκε στη Χαλκίδα και μεγάλωσε στην Αυστραλία, είναι ιδιοκτήτης τεχνολογικής εταιρείας με έδρα την Ελβετία. Βασικός μέτοχος της εισηγμένης στο Χρηματιστήριο της Ζυρίχης εταιρείας “Temenos”, κ. Γιώργος Κούκης είναι, σύμφωνα με το έγκριτο ελβετικό οικονομικό περιοδικό “Bilanz”, ο πέμπτος πλουσιότερος Έλληνας της Ελβετίας.

Στην 7η θέση είναι ο ταξιδιωτικός πράκτορας της Μελβούρνης, Σπύρος Αλυσανδράτος, με 320 εκατομμύρια δολάρια (έναντι 285 εκατομμυρίων πέρσι).

Unemployment, part-time employment, reduced salaries and wages and unpaid work characterise the lives of many crisis hit Athenians.

Data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reveals the heavy toll that four years of Memorandum-based austerity and six years of recession have had on Greece’s capital and most populous city.
As reported by the daily Kathimerini, data from ELSTAT provides a stark indicator of just how profoundly the recession, exacerbated by austerity, has affected the city, which generates 50 per cent of Greece’s GDP and is home to 40 per cent of its population.
Of the roughly 3.8 million people that live in the greater region of Attica, 400,000 people have lost their jobs during the course of the crisis. Of these, 179,507 have been unemployed for over a year, up from 60,720 in April of 2010. However, because of cuts in social spending the number of people receiving unemployment benefits actually fell, dropping to 39,434 in April 2014 from 69,887 in April 2010.
This means only about 8 in 100 of the half million unemployed Athenians receive unemployment benefits.
In addition, the number of people under-employed and in part-time work has grown as have the number of people who work but face delays in receiving wages. 130,000 workers in Athens earn less than 470 euros gross salary per month, while 300,000 workers are estimated to be paid wages with delays of one to six months.
The downward economic spiral led to a major drop in consumption in most sectors. The construction industry in particular has effectively collapsed. In December of 2009 – that is even after the effects of the crisis were already being felt – the number of construction permits issued in one month was 15,347. That is almost three times the number of permits issued for the whole of 2013 (3,675).
Similarly, there were only 28,000 car purchases in Athens in 2013 compared to 144,586 in 2007.
In total it’s estimated 65,000 businesses in Attica – or about 30 per cent – have been shuttered due to the crisis.
Overall, this has seen the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Greek capital drop at an unprecedented rate for a European city during peacetime.
The Attica GDP, which in 2009 was 110.5 billion euros, fell in 2011 to 100 billion euros, whilst according the estimates the region’s GDP in 2013 is expected to be around 90 billion euros.
As expected, this economic crisis has had an effect on the savings of Greeks. Contrary to the popular view that Greek families lived heavily off borrowed money before the crisis, in December of 2009, according to the Bank of Greece, citizens’ total deposits in Greek banks totalled 237.5 billion euros. Of these 133 billion euros belonged to Athenians. As the crisis deepened deposits were reduced by 74.3 billion euros (as they were spent or spirited out of the country). The withdrawals by Athenians alone reached 52 billion euros.

Golden Dawn’s ultimate aim is to create a one-party state and its attacks on migrants are viewed internally as “badges of honour”, a former high-ranking party member has told magistrates investigating the neo-Nazi party as a criminal organisation.
The individual, whose name has not been released to the public, unsuccessfully ran for the party in the 2012 elections and subsequently worked as a parliamentary researcher for the neo-Nazi party before abandoning it in 2013.
His testimony, which he presented voluntarily, has been described as “significant” by the investigating magistrates.
The witness said that “the ultimate goal of Golden Dawn is to establish a one-party regime, in which the state and the party will be identical and the former will operate under orders from the latter”. He added that the regime would maintain power by spreading its beliefs throughout society and – to the greatest extent possible – “in state institutions, meaning the police and the army”.
Golden Dawn’s plans have clear historical parallels. In 1933, Hitler passed a law linking his Nazi party with the state. Through this process of Gleichschaltung or “forcible-coordination”, the Nazi regime successively established a system of totalitarian control and coordination over all aspects of society.
The witness is the first high-ranking former member of the party to come forward and testify in the investigation. He said he was “falsely, but consciously” a member from 2005 to 2013.
“From the day I decided to quit Golden Dawn, I have been systematically receiving death threats and have been the target of relentless psychological warfare,” he said.
He added that attacks carried out by Golden Dawn party members on migrants were considered “medals of honour” internally.
He testified that Golden Dawn was not interested in money or offices, only in disseminating its ideas, adding that any “renunciation of violence” declarations coming from party officials “are completely hypocritical”.
He also claimed that the extensive audio and video footage that top party officials made of Golden Dawn events of every kind did not serve the claimed purpose to remember events but actually functioned to tag members and provide material to blackmail them.
Golden Dawn’s leader, deputy leader and a number of MPs are being held on remand in prison on various charges, including forming and running a criminal organisation.

Tourism revenue increases by 25 per cent.

As the tourism season heats up, it is becoming increasingly clear that 2014 will be a record year for Greece, both in terms of arrivals from abroad and in tourist revenues.
According to the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE), average spending per trip will exceed 700 euros this year, compared with 660 euros in 2013 (not including cruise visitors), while the number of arrivals from abroad will reach more than 19 million and climb to 21.2 million when cruise visitors are added.
SETE expects tourism revenues to grow to 13.5 billion euros this year from 12.2 billion in 2013.
In the first four months of the year, arrivals from abroad posted an increase of 21.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, exceeding 1.9 million, Bank of Greece data revealed early this week.
Arrivals grew by a spectacular 30.6 per cent year-on-year in April alone, reaching 728,000.
The rate of increase in terms of tourism receipts is even greater than that of arrivals, which also points to an increase in quality as well as quantity for Greece’s biggest industry.
In the year to end-April receipts grew by 27.8 per cent from January-April 2013 to reach 900.2 million euros.
In fact April witnessed an unprecedented yearly increase of 35.8 per cent in tourism revenues, which climbed to 411.1 million euros.
This revenue rise comes not only as a result of the rise in arrivals but also the 6.2 per cent rise in spending per trip, Bank of Greece data showed.
Britons raised their spending the most, as they were found to have forked out 50.5 per cent more this year during their trips to Greece compared with the first four months of 2013.
The country is also expecting a total of some 2.2 million cruise visitors this year, the same as in 2013, as most cruise companies have focused this season’s routes on the United States and other traditional destinations rather than on Europe and the Mediterranean, due to the negative financial climate in the region.
However, sector officials told the Greek daily Kathimerini that they are expecting the number of cruise liners in Mediterranean waters to increase, which will have benefits for Greece, too.

Senator will likely escape sanctions but will receive a barrage of criticism by the commission.

Former Assistant Treasurer and New South Wales Liberal Senator Arthur Sinodinos is likely to escape sanction following an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry into his dealings with the Australian Water Holdings (AWH) company, according to Murdoch media The Daily Telegraph and Herald Sun.

The Senator was facing corruption charges about the receipt of annual payments of $200,000 (plus bonuses), for less than 100 hours of work a year.

He was receiving the payments as chair of the company, whilst he was concurrently serving as the New South Wales (NSW) Liberal Party treasurer and president. He resigned from his position with AWH in 2011 to assume his role in the Federal Senate.

Despite the reported findings, he is still set to receive a barrage of criticism by the commission for his evidence throughout the inquiry, and for his alleged shortcomings as the director of AWH.

AWH was reportedly spending tens of thousands of dollars in an effort to court parliamentary members to give it a $1 billion contract deal, between it and the NSW state owned Sydney Water company, an aspect that the Senator staunchly denied knowledge of in evidence.

Sinodinos was reportedly set to make $10-20 million if a deal between the AWH and the Sydney Water company went ahead.

When queried he said “I don’t remember” and “I don’t recall”, in advance of 50 times, when pressed about the payments.

In March, Sinodinos stepped down from his role as assistant treasurer, on the Abbott Government front bench, in the midst of the corruption inquiry and the federal Labor Party has been highly critical of him and Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has pressed the pair for answers.

“The prime minister should explain to Australians when we will have an assistant treasurer,” he said to Canberra reporters, earlier this week.

Despite the controversy embroiling the Abbott Government, Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey is adamant that Sinodinos will return to his frontbench position.

The Senator’s office rejected calls for comment by The Daily Telegraph into its investigation, but a spokeswoman for the Prime Minister told the newspaper that “Senator Sinodinos has been co-operating fully with the ICAC inquiry. ICAC is yet to report.”

Sinodinos is now expected to be called before another ICAC investigation, in August, into further inquiries about the AWH’s alleged involvement with the Sydney Water company. He will give evidence about his knowledge of alleged illegal donations made to the NSW Liberal Party, during his time as treasurer.

Greek Australians all over the country will brave the early start to watch Greece hopefully break another record.

Both Costa Rica and Greece have a similar story going into their match on Monday (AEST).
Costa Rica wasn’t expected to qualify considering their ‘group of death’. But lo and behold, it beat both Uruguay and Italy and drew with toothless England. The world suddenly sat up and started watching Jorge Luis Pinto’s team, putting them in the likely box of finals contenders.
Greece, though, has been hanging on a knife’s edge after lacklustre performances that could have gone either way, had Giorgos Samaras not scored that bullet penalty.
Now both will face off in a frightful battle, and Greece is fully aware of the challenge it faces.
Coach Fernando Santos is already acting quite methodically, trying to size up its opponents.
“We have time to think about the match with Costa Rica. We will go back to our base, think about it and study our opponents,” he said after the 2-1 win against Ivory Coast.
“We have to pay a lot of attention to this game, they came out top in the ‘group of death’. As a result we can’t allow ourselves to underestimate them.”
The match comes the day before Santos’ contract runs out and the trained electrical engineer has no intention of having it renewed come what may, although as he joked before the tournament they may have to extend it by a few days as the quarter-finals fall after it.
Santos, who had extensive experience as a club coach in Greece before replacing the EURO 2004 winning handler Otto Rehhagel in 2010, is not so amused by the continuing belief that Greece only knows how to defend and hit people with the odd goal.
“I can but laugh as it is a joke. In football one attacks and one defends. We know how to defend well and we are very good on the counter-attack.”
Its first two games in the Cup were certainly on the way to proving the misconception, with a clean sheet loss to Colombia and a nil draw to Japan making Greek fans furious.
Attacking will be high on Santos’ agenda, and lots of plays will be geared towards getting Giorgos Samaras as close to a clean shot as possible.
At least Costa Rica has to go back to the drawing board with Greece, with Yeltsin Tejeda admitting the qualification has forced Costa Rica to rewrite its strategy.
“They are in the World Cup and they beat an excellent team, Ivory Coast,” said the 22-year-old midfielder. “If they are there (in the Round of 16), it is because they were better.”
Greece will play Costa Rica on Monday 30 June at 6.00 am (AEST) at Arena Pernambuco. Various locations around Australia will be screening the match live.

55-page report concludes crew was probably unconscious as the jet cruised in autopilot mode.

The passengers and crew of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 most likely died from suffocation and coasted lifelessly into the ocean on autopilot, a new report released by Australian officials on Thursday said.

In a 55-page report, the Australian Transport Safety Board outlined how investigators had arrived at this conclusion after comparing the conditions on the flight with previous disasters, although it contained no new evidence from within the jetliner.

The report narrowed down the possible final resting place from thousands of possible routes, while noting the absence of communications and the steady flight path and a number of other key abnormalities in the course of the ill-fated flight.

“Given these observations, the final stages of the unresponsive crew/hypoxia event type appeared to best fit the available evidence for the final period of MH370’s flight when it was heading in a generally southerly direction,” the ATSB report said.

100 days since jet vanished

All of that suggested that the plane most likely crashed farther south into the Indian Ocean than previously thought, Australian officials also said, leading them to announce a shift farther south within the prior search area.

The new analysis comes more than 100 days after the Boeing 777, carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared on March 8 shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing.

Investigators say what little evidence they have to work with suggests the plane was deliberately diverted thousands of kilometres from its scheduled route before eventually plunging into the Indian Ocean.

The search was narrowed in April after a series of acoustic pings thought to be from the plane’s black box recorders were heard along a final arc where analysis of satellite data put its last location.

But a month later, officials conceded the wreckage was not in that concentrated area, some 1,600 kilometres off the northwest coast of Australia, and the search area would have to be expanded.

“The new priority area is still focused on the seventh arc, where the aircraft last communicated with satellite. We are now shifting our attention to an area further south along the arc,” Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss told reporters in Canberra.

$56 million price tag

Truss said the area was determined after a review of satellite data, early radar information and aircraft performance limits after the plane diverted across the Malaysian peninsula and headed south into one of the remotest areas of the planet.

“It is highly, highly likely that the aircraft was on autopilot otherwise it could not have followed the orderly path that has been identified through the satellite sightings,” Truss said.

The next phase of the search is expected to start in August and take a year, covering some 60,000 square kilometres at a cost of $56 million or more. The search is already the most expensive in aviation history.

The new priority search area is around 2,000 km west of Perth, a stretch of isolated ocean frequently lashed by storm force winds and massive swells.

Two vessels, one Chinese and one from Dutch engineering company Fugro, are currently mapping the sea floor along the arc, where depths exceed 5,000 metres in parts.

A tender to find a commercial operator to conduct the sea floor search closes on Monday.
