The Alkinos Tsilimidos directed production will star Alex Dimitriades as Richard Roma.

Thirty years after it first premièred in Melbourne by the Melbourne Theatre Company, David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross is coming back to the stage, this time with Alex Dimitriades in the role of Richard Roma.

The all male cast will be coached by director Alkinos Tsilimidos, who has just come off directing the Martin Luther King chronicle The Mountaintop.
The production, about the dog-eat-dog world of real estate, will fit in well with the current state of global economics.

The play, written in 1983, follows four real estate agents in Chicago who go to any lengths possible to sell undesirable real estate to unsuspecting buyers.
Dimitriades’ character, Richard Roma, is the best seller and smoothest talker of the lot. He uses his cunning talent to figure out a client’s weakness and uses it to exploit them into a questionable sale. Set in the head office of the agency, the four enter into a competition to see who can outsell the other, with the loser facing the axe.

Mamet is known for his thrilling power plays and scripts, penning the cult political film Wag the Dog and the eventual movie adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross in 1992 that starred Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin.

La Trobe University’s Centre of Dialogue to receive $50,000 for taking out the top prize.

Dr Michalis S Michael was awarded with a peace prize in Constantinople-Istanbul for his work at La Trobe University’s Centre for Dialogue on the peaceful resolution to the Cyprus problem.

Both Michael and the Centre were honoured by the Journalist and Writers Foundation, beating 1179 projects to take out a $50,000 top prize.
As deputy director of the Centre, Dr Michael has researched a number of areas of conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue.

His project “Dialogical Roadmap towards resolving the Cyprus conflict” took out the top prize, an award that supports innovative and significant conflict resolution and peace-making projects focusing on preventing, managing and resolving violent conflicts and promote post-conflict peace-building.
To get through, Dr Michael had to go through a four-step process that ended with an interview with an international jury in Istanbul.

Dr Micahel said the award rightly honours the work the Centre of Dialogue does for international conflict and resolution.

“This award is yet another international recognition of the world-class work that the Centre for Dialogue does in the areas of peace-building and conflict transformation by combining research, policy development and community engagement,” he said.

Dr Michael hopes with the award, funding won’t be cut for the Centre. With the prize money he hopes to implement many of the Centre’s projects.

“Obviously as academics we are humbled by such an honour, but we also feel somewhat vindicated by the recognition we often receive overseas especially during these times when the sort of research and community work we do is under threat,” he says.

“This award encourages and motivates my project team to move from planning to the implementing phase.”

FIFA World Cup: Italy 0 Costa Rica 1

bryanruiz_zwtakmfbd5sa1nc88kdchtbb0

Costa Rica secured a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup and eliminated England after a surprise 1-0 win over Italy.

Few would have given Jose Luis Pinto’s side any hope of reaching the knockout stages prior to the start of the Brazil showpiece.

But, after stunning Uruguay 3-1 in their opening Group D encounter last Saturday, Costa Rica produced another fantastic performance to progress from the group phase of a World Cup for only the second time.

Friday’s game was settled in the 44th minute as midfielder Bryan Ruiz’s header ensured that England will be heading home early following a 2-1 loss to Uruguay on Thursday.

A below-par Italy now face the prospect of a mouth-watering showdown with Uruguay next Tuesday to determine who will be the other qualifier from Group D.

Costa Rica started brightly and came close after just six minutes when defender Celso Borges headed narrowly over the crossbar from a corner.

But, despite enjoying the better of the opening exchanges, Costa Rica were unable to really test Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who was restored to the starting XI after missing the 2-1 win over England due to an ankle injury.

Italy, perhaps hindered by the humidity at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, struggled to create any opportunities of real note.

However, striker Mario Balotelli should have given Italy the lead on the half-hour mark when he latched on to a superb ball from Andrea Pirlo, only to lift an effort over Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas and wide of the goal.

Balotelli showed greater composure when handed another opportunity just two minutes later, but the Milan talisman’s volley was kept out by a strong Navas save.

Costa Rica remained a threat, though, and forced Buffon into action for the first time as the Juventus shot-stopper prevented midfielder Christian Bolanos’ curler from finding the bottom corner.

And Pinto’s men were aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute when Joel Campbell was barged over in the area by Giorgio Chiellini after the latter had given the ball away in midfield.

Yet Costa Rica will feel justice was served a minute later, Ruiz meeting Junior Diaz’s magnificent left-wing cross with an excellent far-post header that cannoned off the underside of the bar and over the line.

Cesare Prandelli’s response to falling behind was a positive one as he brought on striker Antonio Cassano for midfielder Thiago Motta after the interval.

Italy dictated play from the restart with Navas twice drawn into acrobatic stops, first to tip over a long-range effort from defender Matteo Darmian and then to keep out a Pirlo free-kick.

But the opportunities soon dried up for Italy as they laboured against a determined and well-organised Costa Rica defence.

And, despite the introductions of Lorenzo Insigne and Alessio Cerci, the four-time world champions could not find a way through, Costa Rica holding on for another famous result that ends England’s slim hopes.
