The events of December 1944

On 3 December 1944, while the Second World War was still raging, a 200,000-strong rally in central Athens was unexpectedly targeted by the troops of the British units which had arrived to support the Government of National Unity, after the departure of the German occupying forces. Thirty people were killed and 150 injured in an open war against the British troops, lasting almost a month. The conflict was the beginning of the Greek Civil War and of the Cold War which divided Europe for fifty years. The lecture examines these tragic events and analyses their influence on Greek history.
