Bruce Djite’s thumping strike and an own-goal helped the visitors come from behind to inflict an opening-day loss on the title holders.

Adelaide United showed their title credentials in the opening game of their A-League campaign with a well-deserved 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Josep Gombau sent his team out in a 3-4-3 formation which proved effective early on, though it was Brisbane who grabbed the lead thanks to a tricky Thomas Broich free-kick, before Bruce Djite equalised before the break in what was a highly entertaining first term.

A James Donachie own-goal made the difference in the second half, with Matt McKay’s dismissal for dissent making things all the more difficult for the Roar.

The German wasted little time in treating the Suncorp Stadium crowd to a little bit of brilliance as he delivered a free-kick from wide on the left which bounced through the legs of Kurtishi and missed everybody else before spinning like a leg break into the far corner of the net.

Receiving the ball about 25 metres out, Djite turned and unleashed a powerful drive with his left foot which Young could do absolutely nothing about.

1-2 Donachie OG 56′

A silky smooth counterattack from Adelaide ended with Cirio sending in a brilliant cross from the right which Brisbane right-back Donachie bundled into his own net at the back post.

Key moment

The Roar have shown so many times that they can never be counted out of a match, especially when Henrique is on the pitch. As the Brazilian zeroed in on goal in injury time, Adelaide defender Tarek Elrich was the man to spoil another dream comeback when he slid in with a last-ditch tackle to prevent a certain goal.

Highlights reel

The Reds piled on the pressure early but new Roar signing Jamie Young kept his side on level terms with a spectacular save to deny Marcelo Carrusca in the fourth minute. The Argentinian dove low to connect with a Cirio cross but the Roar keeper showed cat-like reflexes to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Coach killer

Sometimes you just can’t predict what players are going to do, no matter how experienced they are. Matt McKay lost the plot when he thought he should have received a free-kick for a perceived foul and was promptly shown a yellow card, then a red, by referee Ben Williams, which made the Roar’s job of finding an equaliser so much more difficult.

Back to the drawing board

Ivan Franjic was always going to be difficult for Mike Mulvey to replace but James Donachie did not appear entirely suited to the role when he slotted in at right-back. Normally a centre-back, the youngster did a decent job when it came to his defensive duties (own-goal aside) but seemed hesitant to get forward and join the attack the way Franjic did so effectively.

The Final Word

This is the start to the season that Gombau would have dreamed of; an away win against the defending champions. For Brisbane, meanwhile, there is no need for panic, but there are a number of things Mulvey needs to work on in the next week.

Just two-and-a-half months as coach of Greece, Claudio Ranieri is heading towards a pair of key Euro 2016 qualifiers that could put his job at risk.

After a disastrous start to his campaign with an opening 1-0 Group F loss at home to Romania last month, the 63-year-old Italian certainly feels the pressure to make good against Finland in Helsinki on Saturday and at home against Northern Ireland next week.

“I hope we win. Both matches are difficult. They are both good teams who fight to the end. We are ready and optimistic about the matches,» Ranieri said.

A sports website in his native country and at least one sports writer in Greece have written that negative results by the Greeks in both matches may lead to Ranieri’s departure.

However sources at the Greek soccer federation have stated that Ranieri has a two-year contract to help the team qualify for the Euro 2016 finals and that there is no question of his replacement, at least at this stage.

He took over as Greece’s coach after his predecessors, Portugal’s Fernando Santos had taken the team to the World Cup 2014 and before that Germany’s Otto Rehhagel led Greece to the Euro 2004 title.

Ranieri, who was sacked from Monaco in May, had very little time to gain knowledge of the players and it showed with the loss to Romania. He was also criticized by the Greek press for his player selections and tactics in the match.

Ranieri called up for the first time 21-year-old Olympiakos forward Dimitris Diamantakos and 23-year-old AEK midfielder Petros Mantalos against Romania but left them out for the matches against Finland and Northern Ireland, before inviting Mantalos again due to an injury crisis in the squad.

He has opted for 22-year-old Panathinaikos forward Nikos Karelis and 21-year-old Sunderland winger Charalampos Mavrias, but also added 20-year-old Fulham defender Kostas Stafylidis and a fourth goalkeeper in 21-year-old Sokratis Dioudis of Club Brugge KV.

Returning after a long absence is 29-year-old PAOK midfielder Alexandros Tziolis but left out of the lineup was 34-year-old Akhisar Belediyespor striker Fanis Gekas who has already scored six goals in his first four matches for his club.

The federation appointed earlier this month former Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis to act as liaison between Ranieri and the players in order to help bridge the communication gap.

Karagounis, who at age 37 retired as a player from the Greek squad with a record 139 caps, knows the Italian well after playing two years at Inter Milan.

With the arrival of Karagounis, it seems that there is a better understanding between Ranieri and the players.

“The atmosphere on the team is excellent, we have trust in each other and we know how important it is for all of us to win the matches against Finland and Northern Ireland,» said Greece captain and PAOK forward Dimitris Salpingidis.

Karagounis said that Ranieri is «cooperative and has impressed me» and that «his experience should bring positive results.”

However Italian sports website tuttomercatoweb said in an exclusive report this week that Ranieri’s job hangs in the balance if Greece loses both matches.

And prominent Greek sportswriter Antonis Karpetopoulos wrote in the Athens daily sports newspaper SportDay last week that a loss against Finland will find Ranieri in a very difficult position.

The federation in a statement said that «Ranieri and his players work very hard and systematically. And that the players will enter the pitch on Saturday to play for their jersey and for their soccer reputation and not for the irrelevant soccer commentators.”

And if the mounting criticism against Ranieri was not enough, the coach has had bad luck with player injuries which have left off the roster Roma defender Jose Holevas, Verona forward Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, Trabzonspor defender Avraam Papadopoulos, PAOK defender Giorgos Tzavellas and Udinese midfielder Panagiotis Kone.

Roma defender Vasilis Torosidis is also on the injured list with the team’s medical staff working on getting him ready for Saturday’s match.

Ranieri led Monaco to second place in Ligue 1 in 2013 and also had spells with Chelsea, Serie A clubs Inter Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, Juventus, Roma and Parma as well as Spanish outfits Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

National team drops two points in Helsinki.

“When you do not win, at least make sure you do not lose,” was the motto of the previous Greece coach, Fernando Santos, and his successor on the national team’s bench will probably think this was also the case in the 1-1 draw with Finland in Helsinki on Saturday for the European Championship qualifiers.

The risk that Greece coach Claudio Ranieri took by introducing a previously unseen forward lineup (Charis Mavrias, Nikos Karelis and Stefanos Athanasiadis) seemed to pay off in the first half, but the lack of experience told in the second as the Greeks could not hold on to their lead and risked losing all three points.

Ranieri’s 4-3-3 formation pointed to a clear plan for a quick flow to the game, as Greece needed all three points from this one to even out the home loss to Romania last month.

Finland had a strong start to the game, putting pressure on the Greek defense, but could not really create the chances that would worry keeper Orestis Karnezis.

Greece absorbed the pressure and started pushing forward after the first 20 minutes. With 24 minutes on the clock the ball fell to Karelis who unleashed a swerving shot from the left that swung its way to the left corner of the Finnish goal for 1-0.

The Greeks saw their confidence grow as the time went on and threatened with a second goal before half-time, as the Finns showed frustration.

The start of the second half seemed from an entirely different game, as the hosts grabbed the Greeks by the neck and managed to find an equalizer through a spectacular volley by Jarkko Hurme that left Karnezis stranded.

Finland searched for a second goal afterward as the Greek defense was uncharacteristically wobbly, until Ranieri introduced a third central defender, Vangelis Moras and changed the formation to 3-5-2.

This allowed the Greeks to go forward, but they seemed to stop at the edge of the box in most cases. The introduction of experienced Giorgos Samaras and Costas Mitroglou hardly changed anything in the Greek attack.

“We could have got all three points, but unfortunately [the Finns] equalized the game,” said goalscorer Karelis: “We have shown we are capable of everything and we will keep trying.”

They should do so, as Northern Ireland will be no pushovers on Tuesday in Piraeus, and with one point from two games Greece cannot afford to drop any more points now.

That 1-1 draw in Helsinki, and a late equalizer by Hungary at Romania, left Northern Ireland alone at the top of Group F after a 2-0 home win against Faroe Islands.

Greece, much improved after a 1-0 home loss against Romania in the opener, will host Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Finland nearly took the lead in the second minute, but Tim Sparv steered the ball just wide of Alexander Ring’s post.

Greece dominated most of the rest of the first half and took the lead in the 24th when Karelis took a pass from Andreas Samaris and did not hesitate to unleash a curving shot from just outside the area which found the left corner of Finland’s goal. Niki Maenpaa dived but could not stop Karelis from scoring in his senior Greece debut.

Finland started the second half strongly and was rewarded with a 55th-minute equalizer. Substitute Kasper Hamalainen made a neat pass to Hurme, who volleyed past goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.

Both teams searched for a second goal, but created no major chances until the end. Greece coach Claudio Ranieri brought in a fresh attacking trio in the final minutes, to no avail.

“We played well (except for) the first 15 minutes of the second half, when we defended too deep,” Ranieri said. “I took the risk of picking younger players (to start) and both Karelis and (Haris) Mavrias played very well.”

Ranieri was assisted on the bench by veteran Greece player Giorgos Karagounis, who retired after the World Cup.

“I’m not happy with the Greece goal but it was an excellent shot. Overall I have to be satisfied with a point,” Finland coach Mixu Paatelainen said.

Northern Ireland scored its pair against the Faroe Islands inside the first 20 minutes, through Gareth McAuley and Kyle Lafferty. The Faroes’ one big chance to claw back a goal later in the first half was blocked by veteran goalie Roy Carroll, who saved Frodi Benjaminsen’s penalty.

Earlier, Balazs Dzsudzsak scored in the 82nd to earn Hungary a 1-1 equalizer against host Romania in Bucharest, against the run of play. Raul Rusescu opened the scoring at the stroke of halftime.

Ακόμα αναζητεί την παρθενική της νίκη στη Φινλανδία η Εθνική μας ομάδα. Έστω και αν το τελικό 1-1, δεν βάζει σε καμία των περιπτώσεων στο… ψυγείο τα όνειρά μας για την απευθείας πρόκριση στα τελικά του EURO 2016, ο πρώτος και κύριος στόχος που ήταν το τρίποντο, δεν επιτεύχθηκε στο Ελσίνκι.

Ανασκόπηση αγώνα

Με το… καλημέρα του αγώνα, η Φινλανδία προσπάθησε να μας αιφνιδιάσει και να πάρει κεφάλι στο σκορ, αλλά το πλασέ του Τοΐβιο (2′) δεν βρήκε στόχο από καλή θέση. Μετά την “τρικυμία” των πρώτων λεπτών, όπου η μπάλα κυκλοφορούσε δύσκολα και τα “πουλήματα” ήταν αρκετά, η Εθνική μας άρχισε να ισορροπεί και να παίρνει μέτρα στο χορτάρι.

Η προβολή του Κλάους στο 10′ αποτέλεσε το πρώτο ουσιαστικό “καμπανάκι κινδύνου” για την εστία του Μάενπα. Πού να ήξερε τι θα ακολουθούσε στην συνέχεια και συγκεκριμένα στο 24′, όταν η μπάλα στρώθηκε στο αριστερό του Καρέλη και εκείνος με αριστουργηματικό φαλτσαριστό σουτ την έστειλε… συστημένη στην αριστερή γωνία. Το 0-1 ήταν γεγονός στο ντεμπούτο του, με επική γκολάρα και ασφαλώς δικαίωση του Κλάουντιο Ρανιέρι που τον έβαλε στο αρχικό σχήμα.

Οι Φινλανδοί, δεν συνήλθαν ποτέ ουσιαστικά μέχρι τη λήξη του πρώτου μέρους, απείλησαν ελάχιστα την εστία του -έτσι και αλλιώς σταθερού όποτε χρειάστηκε- Καρνέζη, με την Εθνική να έχει μια καλή στιγμή λίγο πριν το τέλος του ημιχρόνου (43′) για το 0-2, όταν οι Τοροσίδης – Μαυρίας – Μανιάτης συνεργάστηκαν πολύ καλά, αλλά το βολ πλανέ του τελευταίου δεν βρήκε στόχο.

Οι διεθνείς λες και ξέχασαν να βγουν από τα αποδυτήρια στο ξεκίνημα της επανάληψης, με αποτέλεσμα η ισοφάριση στο 55′ με το μονοκόμματο σουτ του Χούρμε να φαντάζει δίκαιο. Λίγα λεπτά πριν (48′), οι γηπεδούχοι είχαν προειδοποιήσει με τον Ρινγκ, το σουτ του οποίου βρήκε σε ετοιμότητα τον Καρνέζη. Όλα πλέον ξεκινούσαν από την αρχή και οι διεθνείς έπρεπε να χειριστούν μια δύσκολη κατάσταση.

Η φάση του αγώνα

Η γκολάρα του Καρέλη στο ντεμπούτο του ήταν αναμφίβολα το highlight της αναμέτρησης. Δεν ήταν απλά ότι ήταν το πρώτο του ματς με την Ανδρών, αλλά πέτυχε ένα θαυμάσιο τέρμα με αριστερό φαλτσαριστό σουτ από πλάγια θέση στην απέναντι γωνία. Πραγματικά υπέροχο…

Ο διαιτητής

Ο Νταβίδ Φερνάντεθ Μπορμπαλάν, δεν ήταν καλός στο πρώτο μέρος, χάνοντας αρκετές φάσεις και έκανε λάθη και στον πειθαρχικό έλεγχο, αλλά στο δεύτερο μέρος είχε σαφώς καλύτερα σφυρίγματα. Προσπάθησε να κόψει το καρπούζι στη μέση και να μην αδικήσει κάποια από τις δυο ομάδες, επομένως δεν μπορεί να έχει παράπονα κάποια από τις δυο ομάδες.

Ο πολυτιμότερος παίκτης της αναμέτρησης

Ο Καρέλης ήταν πολύ καλός στα 80 λεπτά που αγωνίστηκε. Ειδικά στο πρώτο μέρος, πέρα από το γκολ που πέτυχε, ήταν δραστήριος, είχε καλές κινήσεις, έδωσε μάχες, δεν έδειξε ψαρωμένος και γενικά έκανε μια άκρως θετική εμφάνιση, που αποτελεί παρακαταθήκη για το μέλλον. Ο άσος του Παναθηναϊκού έχει μέλλον και η Εθνική ομάδα μπορεί να ποντάρει πάνω του.

Μας άρεσε

Υπέροχη η ατμόσφαιρα στο γήπεδο. Άκρως πολιτισμένος ο κόσμος, με τους Φινλανδούς να στηρίζουν την ομάδα σε όλη την διάρκεια του 90λεπτου, γεμίζοντας και τις εξέδρες, ενώ και οι δικοί μας ήταν συνεχώς στο πλάι των διεθνών. Πραγματικά χαίρεσαι να βλέπεις παιχνίδια σε τέτοιες συνθήκες. Φωνή, παλμός, αλλά δεν ξέφυγε κανείς.

Δεν μας άρεσε

Η εικόνα της Ελλάδας στην επανάληψη δεν ήταν καθόλου καλή. Οι παίκτες λες και έχασαν τον προσανατολισμό τους, φάνηκαν κουρασμένοι, δεν είχαν τρεξίματα και οι γηπεδούχοι ήταν σαφώς καλύτεροι και δικαιολογημένα ισοφάρισαν το ματς. Το δεύτερο μέρος θα πρέπει να αποτελέσει παράδειγμα προς αποφυγή για τα επόμενα παιχνίδια.

Οι υπόλοιπες οκτώ ομάδες που θα κατακτήσουν την τρίτη θέση στον όμιλό τους, θα σχηματίσουν τέσσερα ζευγάρια που θα αναμετρηθούν σε αγώνες πλέι οφ (εντός-εκτός). Χωρίς προκριματικούς θα συμμετάσχει και η διοργανώτρια, Γαλλία.
