Shira’s Journey to be launched

Shira's Journey to be launched

The relatively untold story of the Greek Jewish communities can finally be shared with the wider community.

A unique three-part project exploring the history of Greece’s Jewish communities will be launched ahead of its Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival premiere.

Ahead of its world premiere at the 21st Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival, the documentary Following Shira’s Journey: A Greek Jewish Odyssey will be launched at the Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture.

The unique three-part project explores the history of Greece’s Jewish communities and consists of Shira’s Journey, a published screenplay by Carol Gordon; Following Shira’s Journey: A Greek Jewish Odyssey, a documentary directed by Carol Gordon and Natalie Cunningham; and a photographic exhibition by Emmanuel Santos.

It is a little known fact that there were thriving Jewish communities in Greece prior to World War II.

For the past 25 years, Melbourne-based writer and the administrator for March of The Living Australia, Carol Gordon, had a burning desire to tell the story of these communities and, through the movie Shira’s Journey she is doing just that.

More than 60,000 Greek Jews perished in the Nazi concentration camps, and yet the experiences of Greece’s Jewish population during the Holocaust have remained relatively unknown until now. In the post-war years, fear, suspicion, economic hardship and civil war relegated the sad history of the Greek Jews to the horrors of a time people preferred to forget.

Interviews with Greek-Jewish Holocaust survivors, as well as second and third generation survivors, offer insights into these now extinct communities, and their much fewer modern-day descendants determined to keep culture and traditions alive – especially in the face of anti-Semitism.

Shot on location in Greece in September 2013, this fascinating documentary is the labour of love of Carol Gordon and Natalie Cunningham. Through the multifaceted project – documentary, photographic exhibition by Emmanuel Santos and book – the relatively untold story of the Greek Jewish communities can finally be shared with the wider community.

Shira’s Journey is a road-movie-with-a-difference involving three unlikely travelling companions: Shira, an ex-South African documentary filmmaker from Melbourne; Avram, an octogenarian Greek Jewish Holocaust survivor, and his American grandson Jeremy, an idealistic lawyer from New York.

The launch will include a presentation of the published screenplay, excerpts from the recently completed documentary and selected images by photographer Emmanuel Santos, shot on location during the filming of the documentary.

Shira’s Journey will be launched on Sunday 12 October at 4.00 pm, at the Greek Centre, 168 Lonsdale Street Melbourne. RSVP: carol@gordon.net.au

The movie will premiere at the Delphi Bank 21st Greek Film Festival on Sunday 26 October, at 5.00 pm at Palace Cinema Como. For more information about Shira’s Journey, visit www.shirasjourney.com

Virtual museum on Alexander the Great ‘coming soon’

Virtual museum on Alexander the Great 'coming soon'

Archaeologists are travelling to India and Bactria, tracing the Macedonian leader’s path in order to help create the virtual museum.

Its physical base would be at the Museum of Aegae, in northern Greece, the location of the Macedonian dynasty’s seat.

A virtual museum on Alexander the Great, a project begun in 2000, is near completion, according to archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridou in Thessaloniki.

Kottaridou said that archaeologists were actually travelling to India and Bactria, tracing the Macedonian leader’s path in order to help create the virtual museum, which would be accessible in Greek and English.

Its physical base would be at the Museum of Aegae, in northern Greece, the location of the Macedonian dynasty’s seat.

The project was announced at an event presenting a new series of books by Kathimerini newspaper publishers on world leaders. It will allow visitors to follow any of several paths and will include a virtual library of films, written sources and maps.

UAE – Australia 0-0: Socceroos laborious and unproductive

There was no way through for Ange Postecoglou’s men in a friendly played in tough conditions as preparation for the upcoming Asian Cup

Australia were held to a dour 0-0 draw by the United Arab Emirates at a hot and humid Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium on Friday.

In a match of few clear-cut chances, the Socceroos struggled to mount any serious pressure in the attacking third but coach Ange Postecoglou will be encouraged by an improved defensive showing.

The Alex Wilkinson-Trent Sainsbury partnership in the heart of the defence performed well, ensuring the Socceroos kept their first clean sheet in nine matches.

Another bright spot was Robbie Kruse’s long-awaited comeback from a knee injury, getting through 60 minutes and showing some encouraging signs to suggest he will – as expected – be a key player come January’s Asian Cup.

Postecoglou threw up a surprise before kick-off, leaving Tim Cahill on the bench and handing a debut to Sydney FC attacker Bernie Ibini up front.

But it was Mathew Leckie who had the first chance inside two minutes, out-pacing Mohamed Ahmad to reach Mile Jedinak’s lofted ball but his subsequent effort was wide of the mark.

The searing heat, which nudged 35 degrees in Abu Dhabi, contributed to a slow tempo early on with the hosts content to play at almost a walking pace at times.

The Socceroos managed to get into several promising areas in and around the UAE box but were often let down by the final pass.

After being largely untroubled for the first 25 minutes, the visitors had Wilkinson to thank for denying UAE the opener.

Ali Ahmed Mabkhout sprung the offside trap and raced clear on goal, dinking the ball over goalkeeper Matt Ryan but Wilkinson was on the line to head over the crossbar to safety.

Australia though finished the half in the ascendency and almost took a lead into the break after a fantastic set piece routine.

Mark Milligan raced onto Jedinak’s chipped free-kick – after starting the run next to his skipper – but his glancing header went just wide of the post.

Leckie managed to test Ali Khaseif early in the second half after being freed up on the edge of the box by some nice build-up play from Milligan and Massimo Luongo, but his tame shot was easily saved.

The tiring Socceroos seemed to find a second wind with the introduction of substitutes James Troisi and Brad Smith on the hour mark.

Soon after Milligan spotted Leckie’s incisive run in behind the UAE defence, picking the Ingolstadt man out with an inch-perfect pass but his first-time shot was well saved by Khaseif.

Confusion in the UAE box almost saw Ibini cap his debut with a goal but he couldn’t get significant connection on his snap-shot from just eight yards out.

Australia’s all-time leading goal-scorer Cahill came on for the last 15 minutes and had a trademark headed chance which sailed before Sainsbury squandered a gilt-edged chance at the death.

A corner was headed towards goal by Cahill, finding Sainsbury just a couple of yards out but his flick went up over the bar to ensure the match would finish goal-less.
