While Turkish troops watched the fighting in Kobani through a chicken-wire fence, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that the town was about to fall and Kurdish fighters warned of an impending bloodbath if they were not reinforced — fears the United States shares.

But Mr. Erdogan said Tuesday that Turkey would not get more deeply involved in the conflict with the Islamic State unless the United States agreed to give greater support to rebels trying to unseat the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad. That has deepened tensions with President Obama, who would like Turkey to take stronger action against the Islamic State and to leave the fight against Mr. Assad out of it.

Mr. Erdogan has also resisted pleas to send his troops across the border in the absence of a no-fly zone to ward off the Syrian Air Force.

Even as it stepped up airstrikes against the militants Tuesday, the Obama administration was frustrated by what it regards as Turkey’s excuses for not doing more militarily. Officials note, for example, that the American-led coalition, with its heavy rotation of flights and airstrikes, has effectively imposed a no-fly zone over northern Syria already, so Mr. Erdogan’s demand for such a zone rings hollow.

“There’s growing angst about Turkey dragging its feet to act to prevent a massacre less than a mile from its border,” a senior administration official said. “After all the fulminating about Syria’s humanitarian catastrophe, they’re inventing reasons not to act to avoid another catastrophe.

“This isn’t how a NATO ally acts while hell is unfolding a stone’s throw from their border,” said the official, who spoke anonymously to avoid publicly criticizing an ally.

Secretary of State John Kerry has had multiple phone calls in the last 72 hours with Turkey’s prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, and foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, to try to resolve the border crisis, American officials said.

For Mr. Obama, a split with Turkey would jeopardize his efforts to hold together a coalition of Sunni Muslim countries to fight the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL. While Turkey is not the only country that might put the ouster of Mr. Assad ahead of defeating the radical Sunnis of the Islamic State, the White House has strongly argued that the immediate threat is from the militants.

But if Turkey remains a holdout, it could cause other fissures in the coalition. It is not only a NATO ally but the main transit route for foreigners seeking to enlist in the ranks of the Islamic State.

Ultimately, American officials said, the Islamic State cannot be pushed back without ground troops that are drawn from the ranks of the Syrian opposition. But until those troops are trained, equipped and put in the field, something that will take some time, officials said, Turkey can play a vital role.

“We have anticipated that it will be easier to protect population centers and to support offensives on the ground in Iraq, where we have partners” in the Kurdish pesh merga fighters and the Iraqi Army, said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. “Clearly, in Syria, it will take more time to develop the type of partners on the ground with whom we can coordinate.”

For this reason, the official said, the military strategy in Syria so far has focused on “denying ISIL safe haven and degrading critical infrastructure — like command and control and mobile oil refineries — that they use to support their operations in Iraq.”

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Mr. Obama’s spokesman, Josh Earnest, said he was confident that the president’s recently -appointed special envoy for Syria, retired Gen. John R. Allen, would be able to resolve some logistical issues regarding the Turkish military’s participation in the coalition. But he acknowledged that Turkey’s differing view of the need to oust Mr. Assad was likely to come up.

While the diplomacy went ahead, the United States took pains to emphasize its support for the embattled Kurds in Kobani.

The military’s Central Command confirmed on Tuesday that coalition aircraft had carried out five airstrikes against Islamic State positions in the Kobani area in the past two days, destroying or damaging armed vehicles, artillery, a tank and troop positions.

The strikes brought the total number of airstrikes in and around Kobani to 18 — out of more than 100 in Syria altogether — since the air campaign was extended from Iraq to Syria.

But Kurdish fighters in Kobani said they were running out of ammunition and could not prevail without infusions of troops and arms from Turkey. Independent analysts and some influential members of Congress concurred, deriding the airstrikes in Kobani as too little, too late.

Οι διαπραγματεύσεις άρχισαν πριν 9 χρόνια και ίσως ο Άμποτ να είναι ο πρωθυπουργός που θα μείνει στην ιστορία ως ο ηγέτης που θα την υπογράψει, τελικά.

Σε μαραθώνιο 9 ολόκληρων χρόνων εξελίσσεται η εμπορική συμφωνία με την Κίνα, η οποία ξεκίνησε πριν 9 χρόνια. Υπάρχει, δε, περίπτωση ο Άμποτ να είναι ο πρωθυπουργός που θα μείνει στην ιστορία ως ο ηγέτης που θα την υπογράψει, τελικά.

Ωστόσο, ο ίδιος, όπως φαίνεται, δεν είναι διατεθειμένος να βάλει την υπογραφή του στο 1.000 σελίδων συμφωνητικό, αν η Κίνα δεν κάνει ορισμένες υποχωρήσεις.
Έγκυρες πηγές αναφέρουν ότι, στην ουσία, δεν έχουν αλλάξει και πολλά πράγματα από το 2005 και τα εμπόδια που υπήρχαν τότε εξακολουθούν να υφίστανται και σήμερα, μπορούν δε να εκτοπιστούν όταν οι διαπραγματεύσεις γίνουν σε επίπεδο αρχηγών.

Υποστηρίζεται ότι η επιτυχία έγκειται στο να δεχτεί η Κίνα να βγάλει τα εμπόδια τα οποία υπάρχουν σήμερα αναφορικά με το εμπόριο μοσχαρίσιου και αρνίσιου κρέατος, γαλακτικών προϊόντων, κρασιού και λαχανικών, τουλάχιστον στο επίπεδο που είναι οι εμπορικές συναλλαγές της Κίνας με τη Ν. Ζηλανδία, από το 2008 που σύνηψαν την εμπορική συμφωνία.

Ενώ αρκετοί είναι εκείνοι που πιστεύουν στη σκληρή στάση της Κίνας, δεν είναι λίγοι εκείνοι που υποστηρίζουν ότι δεν αποκλείεται η Κίνα να κάνει υποχωρήσεις την τελευταία στιγμή, με μεγάλη πιθανότητα να συμβεί αυτό όταν οι αρχηγοί των δύο χωρών συναντηθούν στη Διάσκεψη Κορυφής – G20 στη Βρισβάνη τον ερχόμενο Νοέμβριο.

Επίσημες πηγές αναφέρουν ότι στον 21ο γύρο των συζητήσεων οι οποίες έλαβαν χώρα τον περασμένο μήνα στην Κίνα επιτεύχθηκαν αρκετά, ώστε να συμπληρωθούν αρκετά κενά τα οποία υπάρχουν στις 1.000 σελίδες της εν λόγω συμφωνίας.

«ΘΑ ΕΠΙΜΕΝΩ»

Ο υπουργός Εμπορίου, Andrew Robb -ο οποίος μόλις υπέγραψε συμφωνία εμπορικών συναλλαγών με την Κορέα και την Ιαπωνία-, δήλωσε ότι θα συνεχιστούν οι προσπάθειες με την Κίνα, δεδομένου ότι δεν θα πρέπει να διαγραφούν χρόνια προσπαθειών επ’ αυτού του θέματος.
«Δεν πρόκειται να εγκαταλείψουμε τον αγώνα τώρα. Έχουμε δαπανήσει πάρα πολύ χρόνο και δεν είμαστε μακριά από το να κλείσουμε μια πάρα πολύ καλή συμφωνία. Θα συνεχίσω τις διαπραγματεύσεις μέχρι να το επιτύχουμε».

Θα πρέπει να τονιστεί ότι υπάρχει ελπίδα η Κίνα να κάνει υποχωρήσεις όσον αφορά με τη συγκρότηση ίσων όρων «παιχνιδιού», στις περιπτώσεις που μεγάλες αυστραλιανές εταιρίες ζητούν θέση στην κινέζικη αγορά.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, πρόοδος έχει σημειωθεί σε ορισμένους τομείς διαπραγματεύσεων για τα γαλακτοκομικά προϊόντα και τα κρασιά, όχι αρκετή όμως ώστε να θέσει την Αυστραλία στο ίδιο επίπεδο με τη Ν. Ζηλανδία.

Μερικές έγκριτες πηγές, να σημειωθεί, τονίζουν το γεγονός ότι, έστω και μία επιτυχής συμφωνία, δεν πρόκειται να αλλάξει σημαντικά τη θέση της Αυστραλίας.

O κ. και η κ. Κλούνεϊ

Η Αμάλ Αλαμουντίν στην Αθήνα για την υπόθεση των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα.

Η σύζυγος του Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ πάει στην Ελλάδα επαναφέροντας στο προσκήνιο ένα ζήτημα που η ελληνική Πολιτεία κρατά ζωντανό από τις αρχές τις δεκαετίας του 1980, όταν η Μελίνα Μερκούρη ως υπουργός Πολιτισμού, στη γενική διάσκεψη της UNESCO για τον πολιτισμό στο Μεξικό, πρόβαλε το αίτημα της επιστροφής των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα στην Ελλάδα.

Αρχές Σεπτέμβρη του 2014. Ο ελληνικής καταγωγής υποψήφιος για Όσκαρ διευθυντής φωτογραφίας και κολλητός φίλος του Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ Φαίδωνας Παπαμιχαήλ κατευθύνεται καβάλα στο σκούτερ του προς το αριστοκρατικό «Grand Hotel Imperial» που βρίσκεται στη λίμνη του Κόμο -και πολύ κοντά στην περίφημη βίλα Κλούνεϊ- για τις ανάγκες μιας συνέντευξης που δημοσιεύεται λίγο αργότερα στο Andro TV. Η κουβέντα ταξιδεύει εσκεμμένα στο Κινηματογραφικό Φεστιβάλ του Βερολίνου και συγκεκριμένα στη συνέντευξη Τύπου της ταινίας «Μνημείων άνδρες» όπου η νεαρή δημοσιογράφος Ελίζα Χριστοδουλίδη «μεταφέροντας» την υπόθεση της ταινίας -όπου μια επίλεκτη ομάδα στρατιωτών στοχεύει στην επιστροφή έργων τέχνης που κλάπηκαν από τους ναζί- στη σύγχρονη Ελλάδα, ρωτά τον πρωταγωνιστή της Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ ποια είναι η θέση του για την επιστροφή των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα από το Βρετανικό Μουσείο στην Ελλάδα.

Η θετική απάντηση του Κλούνεϊ ξεσηκώνει θύελλα συζητήσεων στα διεθνή ΜΜΕ ενώ, σύμφωνα με τα λεγόμενα του Φαίδωνα Παπαμιχαήλ, αμέσως μετά τις δηλώσεις του διάσημου σταρ η υπουργός Πολιτισμού, ο υπουργός Οικονομικών και ο Έλληνας πρόξενος στο Λος Άντζελες επικοινωνούν μαζί του ζητώντας του να μεσολαβήσει στον Κλούνεϊ για να βοηθήσει στην υπόθεση των γλυπτών. Είναι στην ίδια συνέντευξη όπου ο Φαίδωνας Παπαμιχαήλ αποκαλύπτει ότι η τότε μνηστή -και σήμερα σύζυγος- του Κλούνεϊ, η Λιβανεζο-Βρετανίδα δικηγόρος Αμάλ Αλαμουντίν έχει πάρει προσωπικά την υπόθεση της επιστροφής των μαρμάρων στην Ελλάδα και ότι σκοπεύει να μεταβεί την Αθήνα προκειμένου να συναντήσει τον πρωθυπουργό Αντώνη Σαμαρά, και να συνομιλήσουν για το επίμαχο θέμα: «Όταν η Αμάλ μου είπε ότι σκοπεύει να πάει στην Αθήνα προκειμένου να βοηθήσει στο ζήτημα της επιστροφής των μαρμάρων, γύρισα και της είπα: Αν καταφέρεις να πάρεις πίσω τα μάρμαρα από τους Βρετανούς, θα είσαι μια ηρωίδα για την Ελλάδα. Θα σου δώσουν και ένα νησί για δώρο όπως στον Άντονι Κουίν».

ΤΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΚΥΡΙΑΣ ΚΛΟΥΝΕΪ ΣΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΚΑΙ Η ΜΑΤΑΙΩΜΕΝΗ ΓΚΛΙΤΣΑ

Με ή χωρίς νησί, η άφιξη της κυρίας Κλούνεϊ στη χώρα μας έχει προγραμματιστεί για τη Δευτέρα, 13 Οκτωβρίου, ενώ αναμένεται να αποχωρήσει την Τετάρτη, 15 Οκτωβρίου. Η Αμάλ Αλαμουντίν θα καταφτάσει στην Ελλάδα με απευθείας πτήση από το Λονδίνο συνοδεία δύο δικηγόρων της ομάδας της ενώ στο πλευρό της θα βρίσκεται και ο πρόεδρος του Παγκόσμιου Συνδέσμου για την επανένωση των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα, Ντέιβιντ Χιλ.

Σύμφωνα με ασφαλείς πληροφορίες, η Αμάλ θα καταλύσει στο ξενοδοχείο «Μεγάλη Βρετανία» όπου έχει ήδη κρατηθεί σουίτα στο όνομά της, ενώ μέχρι στιγμής δεν έχει εκφράσει καμία απολύτως επιθυμία αναφορικά με τη διαμονή της. Μοναδική παράκληση από την πλευρά της κυρίας Κλούνεϊ προς την ελληνική κυβέρνηση είναι να μην της δοθεί κανένα γαμήλιο δώρο, διότι όπως έχει επαναλάβει αρκετές φορές στους ιθύνοντες νόες του πρωθυπουργικού κύκλου, οι οποίοι εν προκειμένου είναι γένους θηλυκού, «δεν έρχομαι στην Ελλάδα για να γιορτάσω ή να διαφημίσω το γάμο μου αλλά για να βοηθήσω στην υπόθεση των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα». Όπως υποστηρίζουν πρόσωπα του Μαξίμου, η Αμάλ θα λάβει όλο το ιστορικό της υπόθεσης των μαρμάρων, θα το μελετήσει και εν συνεχεία θα αποφασίσει ποιον ρόλο προτίθεται να αναλάβει.
Αν δηλαδή θα είναι απλώς κοινωνός των θέσεών μας στο εξωτερικό ή αν θα προχωρήσει ακόμη περισσότερο στο ζήτημα αναλαμβάνοντας τη νομική εκπροσώπηση του αιτήματος της ελληνικής κυβέρνησης για την επιστροφή των μαρμάρων στην Ελλάδα, με το δεύτερο σενάριο να θεωρείται από τους γνωρίζοντες το επικρατέστερο. Το πρωί της 14ης Οκτωβρίου, στις 10 ακριβώς το πρωί, η Αμάλ Αλαμουντίν θα μεταβεί στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου όπου θα συναντήσει τον πρωθυπουργό, ενώ αμέσως μετά θα κατευθυνθεί στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης όπου θα ξεναγηθεί και στη συνέχεια θα της παρατεθεί γεύμα. Θα ακολουθήσει συνέντευξη Τύπου ενώ αργότερα θα ξεναγηθεί σε διάφορα σημεία της Αθήνας όπου ενδέχεται να συναντηθεί και με εκπροσώπους ανθρωπιστικών οργανώσεων. Για την ώρα δεν επιβεβαιώνεται επίσκεψη της κυρίας Αλαμουντίν στην Αμφίπολη, ενώ φαίνεται να απέχει πολύ από την πραγματικότητα η επιθυμία κύκλων του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, για μετάβαση της διάσημης δικηγόρου -συνοδεία του υπουργού Πολιτισμού Κώστα Τασούλα και της γενικής γραμματέως του ΥΠΠΟ, Λίνας Μενδώνη- στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο της Δωδώνης.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι στα πηγαδάκια της Βουλής κυκλοφορεί μέχρι σήμερα και μεταξύ αστείου και σοβαρού η μεγάλη επιθυμία του Γιαννιώτη υπουργού Πολιτισμού για ένα ταξίδι συντροφιά με την κυρία Αλαμουντίν μέχρι το Μέτσοβο όπου θα την έντυνε καραγκούνα και θα της προσέφερε ως γαμήλιο δώρο μια γκλίτσα! Σενάριο που φαίνεται να ανήκει στη σφαίρα της φαντασίας καθώς, σύμφωνα με ασφαλείς πληροφορίες του πρωθυπουργικού κύκλου, το πρωί της 15ης Οκτωβρίου η Αμάλ θα αναχωρήσει αεροπορικώς για το Λονδίνο και για την αγκαλιά του συζύγου της Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ.

«ΟΛΟΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΟΞΦΟΡΔΗ ΓΝΩΡΙΖΑΜΕ ΠΟΥ ΘΑ ΕΦΤΑΝΕ Η ΑΜΑΛ»

Ανάμεσα στα πρόσωπα που επιθυμούν να συναντήσουν από κοντά την Αμάλ Αλαμουντίν είναι και ο Έλληνας συμφοιτητής της στην Οξφόρδη, κ. Ζήσης Φωτάκης, λέκτορας Ναυτικής Ιστορίας στη Σχολή Ναυτικών Δοκίμων.

«Θα ήθελα πολύ να δω ξανά την Αμάλ από κοντά διότι ήταν από τα πλέον χαρισματικά κορίτσια του Πανεπιστημίου. Είχα επιχειρήσει να το κάνω και τον περασμένο Μάρτιο, όταν με ενημέρωσαν ότι είχε επισκεφθεί την Ελλάδα και συγκεκριμένα τη Σκιάθο με τον Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ, αλλά κάτι τέτοιο δεν κατέστη εφικτό» λέει ο κ. Φωτάκης και συνεχίζει: «Δεν μου κάνει την παραμικρή εντύπωση το γεγονός ότι έρχεται στην Ελλάδα για να βοηθήσει στη διεκδίκηση των γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα.

O κ. ΖΗΣΗΣ ΦΩΤΑΚΗΣ ΣΥΜΦΟΙΤΗΤΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΑΜΑΛ

Η Αμάλ διψούσε ανέκαθεν για το δίκιο, κάτι που τελικά την οδήγησε και σε σπουδές Νομικής. Η Αμάλ ήταν μαχήτρια από παιδί. Λάτρευε τους Έλληνες και την Ελλάδα -την οποία έχει επισκεφθεί και ως φοιτήτρια- και μπορώ να σας πω ότι η δεύτερη επιλογή της στις φιλικές της σχέσεις μετά τους Άραβες ήταν οι Έλληνες και οι Ιταλοί. Τη θαύμαζα απεριόριστα διότι ενώ είχε όλα τα προσόντα για να το παίζει μια απροσπέλαστη ντίβα -ήταν έξυπνη, όμορφη και με ένα σπάνιο χιούμορ-, εκείνη συμπεριφερόταν απέναντι σε όλους με έναν ιδιαίτερα καταδεκτικό, ταπεινό θα έλεγα, τρόπο. Πιστεύω ότι η συνδρομή της στην επιστροφή των μαρμάρων θα είναι τεράστια διότι ό,τι βάλει η Αμάλ στο μυαλό της μπορεί και το κάνει πραγματικότητα.

Από την ταινία “Mamma mia”

Είναι δυνατόν η χώρα που έκανε τα εύκολα δύσκολα στις διεθνείς κινηματογραφικές παραγωγές με αποτέλεσμα να την αποφεύγουν, να θέλει να αναδειχθεί σε Μέκκα της έβδομης τέχνης; Είναι, σύμφωνα με την υφυπουργό Πολιτισμού, Αντζελα Γκερέκου, η οποία μάλιστα για να πετύχει το στόχο αυτό έχει τρία βασικά βέλη στη φαρέτρα της.
Πρώτον, μέσα σε δέκα ημέρες η εκάστοτε παραγωγή θα έχει απάντηση σχετικά με το αν μπορεί να προχωρήσει ή όχι στο γύρισμα με μια αίτηση στην αρμόδια τοπική Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων. Στο Κεντρικό Αρχαιολογικό Συμβούλιο θα φτάνουν πλέον μόνο οι αιτήσεις που συμπεριλαμβάνουν μνημεία προστατευόμενα από την UNESCO, ενώ οι επτά κοινές υπουργικές αποφάσεις που αφορούσαν θέματα κινηματογράφησης και σχετικών αδειών ενοποιούνται σε μία ώστε να μειωθεί η γραφειοκρατία. Μια ειδική διαδικτυακή πύλη μάλιστα θα εξηγεί αναλυτικά τα δικαιολογητικά που απαιτούνται ανά περίπτωση, ενώ θα επιχειρεί τον συντονισμό και άλλων εμπλεκόμενων φορέων όπως η Αστυνομίας ή το Λιμενικό.

Δεύτερον, οι παραγωγές που θα προβάλλουν την Ελλάδα (ύστερα από ειδική ομάδα που θα συσταθεί) δεν θα καταβάλλουν τέλη κινηματογράφησης. Ζημία, σύμφωνα με την κυρία Γκερέκου, δεν θα υπάρξει καθώς σήμερα από τα 50 εκατ. ευρώ που είναι τα ετήσια έσοδα του Ταμείου Αρχαιολογικών Πόρων και Απαλλοτριώσεων μόλις 160.000 ευρώ προέρχονται από τέλη κινηματογράφησης, παρά το γεγονός ότι εκτιμάται πως μια ταινία κόστους ενός εκατ. ευρώ πληρώνει από 600 έως 1.000 ευρώ ανά λεπτό για τις λήψεις εντός αρχαιολογικού χώρου.

Χωρίς να βάλουν το χέρι στην τσέπη, θα μπορούν να κάνουν γυρίσματα και οι παραγωγές που προέρχονται από χώρες της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης -κάτι που ισχύει σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη με εξαίρεση την Ελλάδα- ενώ πλέον τέλη δεν θα πληρώνουν ούτε οι δημόσιοι ή εποπτευόμενοι φορείς όταν χρησιμοποιούν μουσεία και αρχαιολογικούς χώρους (ΝΕΡΙΤ, ΕΟΤ κ.ά.) ούτε παραγωγές που χρηματοδοτούνται από το Κέντρο Κινηματογράφου.

Το τρίτο όπλο είναι η δημιουργία υποδομών κινηματογραφικών παραγωγών (π.χ. στούντιο) – σχετικές διατάξεις θα συμπεριληφθούν στον αναπτυξιακό νόμο – ώστε η Ελλάδα να γίνει Μέκκα του κινηματογράφου σε συνδυασμό με φορολογικά κίνητρα, που συζητούνται με το υπουργείο Οικονομικών.

Στο μεταξύ γίνονται, όπως χαρακτηριστικά τόνισε, προσπάθειες για να εφαρμοστεί ο νόμος που είχε ψηφιστεί προ τετραετίας και προέβλεπε τα ιδιωτικά κανάλια να καταβάλλουν το 1,5% των ετήσιων ακαθάριστων εσόδων τους στο Κέντρο Κινηματογράφου προς ενίσχυση της εγχώριας κινηματογραφικής παραγωγής.

Και μπορεί τη μερίδα του λέοντος των ενδιαφερόντων της υφυπουργού να την έχει κερδίσει ο κινηματογράφος, αλλαγές ωστόσο ανήγγειλε και σχετικά με το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης. Ξεκαθάρισε ότι η διευθύντρια, Άννα Καφέτση, παραμένει στη θέση της, αλλά προανήγγειλε αλλαγές στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο ώστε να απαλειφθούν οι εντάσεις που έχουν προκαλέσει καθυστερήσεις, αλλά και την τοποθέτηση ακόμη ενός προσώπου στη διοίκηση του μουσείου χωρίς να ξεκαθαρίσει το ρόλο του. Οι αξιωματικοί όμως δεν χρησιμοποιούν το αυτοκίνητο -που πιάνει τα 257 χλμ./ώρα- για να κυνηγούν κακοποιούς, αλλά για να… συγκεντρώνουν χρήματα.
Τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια, από τη στιγμή που η Porsche δώρισε την 911 Carrera στην αστυνομία, το πολυτελέστατο αυτοκίνητο έχει εμφανιστεί σε περισσότερες από 300 φιλανθρωπικές εκδηλώσεις βοηθώντας την αστυνομία να συγκεντρώσει περίπου 2 εκατομμύρια δολάρια.

«Αν και η 911 θα ήταν για κάποιους ένα ιδανικό αυτοκίνητο για καταδιώξεις, η αληθινή αξία της για την αστυνομία είναι ότι συγκεντρώνει το ενδιαφέρον και την περιέργεια κυρίως των νέων, πράγμα που είναι ακριβώς ο στόχος μας» δήλωσε ο επικεφαλής της αστυνομίας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας.

Melburnian Janet Derrick (73) headed to Greece this week to realise a lifelong ambition: to visit the place where the father she never knew was killed in World War II.

Janet’s odyssey will see her head to Souda Bay in Crete to lay a wreath on the water where her father Donald Haddow, a shipwright on HMAS Perth, was killed in a German bombing raid on 22 April 1941.

“I was less than two years old when my father died so I never had a chance to get to know him,” Janet told Neos Kosmos. “For me this is a way to connect with him. I want to go back and experience being close to where he was.”

While Janet’s children have visited Crete before this will be her first trip to Greece.

“I’ve been thinking about doing this trip for as long as I can remember. For me it’s about recognising that I did have a father, because I’ve only ever had photos.”

One of the first casualties in the battle for Crete, Donald Mceachern Haddow – known as ‘Bingle’ to his shipmates – was born in Glasgow in 1904.

Enlisted in the RAN originally as a joiner in 1925, the proud Scot who had a thistle tattooed on his right arm joined the Perth in 1939.

On loan to the cruiser HMS York in April 1941 (which had been beached after an Italian attack in the bay a month before by Italian motor launches), Haddow’s death occurred while he was diving on the stricken warship.

On 22 April, a German air raid caught the 37-year-old Haddow having just resurfaced in a small tender alongside the York’s half-submerged hull.

In his heavy diver’s suit and lead boots, he had just removed the copper helmet when a bomb exploded in the water nearby, swamping the work boat and sending the heavily weighed-down diver plummeting to the depths.

Just three weeks before he had written to Janet’s mother Esther. The letter he sent to their Hastings home has faded slightly with age, but its content is still vivid and achingly poignant

“We’re still pretty busy over here,” wrote Donald. ” Until we wipe them right out of the Med we can expect no relief …shall be glad to get away from the dive bombers…

“I hope there will be more snaps for me, Janet is lovely to see. What a lot I am missing by not being home with her now…”

As this paper goes to press, Janet’s long-awaited pilgrimage to Crete, accompanied by her husband Bryan, has begun.

They will arrive, so fittingly, on the overnight ferry to Souda from Pireaus, disembarking close to the spot where Donald Haddow lost his life.
After a day’s rest they will find a boat to take them out onto the water.

“We’ll get there and see the harbour and try and work out where the York might have been. But like my eldest son said, ‘you’ll just know’,” said Janet.

Based in Chania for their 10-day stay, Janet and Bryan are hoping local people and the Nautical Museum of Crete may be able to help in their very special mission.

With over 900 Greek Australian students and friends in attendance, all coming together for the most anticipated event of the year, NUGAS’ annual ball celebrated its 10th anniversary last Sunday.

Hosted at the Victory Room of Etihad Stadium, the event of the year for NUGAS and its nine Victorian members organisations, the ball was the fruition of months of planning and organisation and a lot of hard work, as NUGAS Victoria president Tass Sgardelis told Neos Kosmos.

“It was a very successful ball and one of the biggest we had – both the ball and the after party,” Sgardelis told Neos Kosmos.

The special night that welcomed Greek Australian students from Victorian universities, youth organisations and NUGAS members past and present featured live entertainment from the renowned Glendi Band and interstate DJ Nicky Zee, as well as the special guest, singer Carly Yelayiotis.

After their inaugural indoor soccer tournament scheduled at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre for this Saturday, NUGAS will from this week commence their tour of Greek schools around Victoria, with an aim to promote the National Union of Greek Australian Students itself as well as the learning of Modern Greek.

“Our aim is to firstly promote Modern Greek, both NUGAS and other students’ clubs, as well as to talk to students about transitioning to university life and to help answer any questions.

“We have done it on a smaller scale in the last couple of years, but this year we want to try and cover all the main Greek schools,” president Tass Sgardelis said.

Sgardelis, who has been at the helm of NUGAS Victoria for one and a half years now, said that in the last 12 months the numbers of its members have almost doubled, from 800 members last year to 1,500 members in 2014.

The number of clubs has grown from six to nine, representing eight Victorian universities.

“We are now focusing on engaging students before they reach university. One of the main reasons is to inform them about the opportunities to study
Modern Greek at university, because a lot of them are not aware of it, and the benefits of it. That’s something we want to focus on doing in 2015.

“With numbers dwindling in Modern Greek at universities, and courses under pressure, this issue is really important to us. It’s our job to try and boost those numbers and support teaching Modern Greek at universities as much as possible.”

With NUGAS Victoria’s yearly program including numerous social gatherings – the famous annual ball and boat cruises, and many fundraisers, Tass Sgardelis says it is the volunteering of its members that makes a real difference within community.

Throughout October, NUGAS Victoria members will be visiting Fronditha and Agapi Care nursing homes, to volunteer and spend quality time with the elderly of the Greek community.

“We found that our contribution to our community is best served with our volunteering rather than with financial donations – which we are still doing as well, but we found we can make a bigger impact through just going to nursing homes and helping out where we can.”

With NUGAS Victoria numbers increasing, and its members associations active at universities around Melbourne and Victoria, Tass Sgardelis says there is a lot of potential within the young Greek Australian community.

“We have such a unique and wonderful community, and it’s just such a great thing to be a part of it. It gives me such great joy to see that our youth want to engage with our culture and come together as Greek Australian students, not only for social events but also to share their culture.”

For Tass himself, it is a deep sentiment about the organisation and the community that makes him dedicate time to the work NUGAS is doing.

“I care very deeply about the organisation because I see it as very unique and I don’t see any other cultures doing it to this extent. We work closely with Italians and a couple of other student organisations – and we are the envy of Australia. Even the interstate members who came over from Sydney and
Brisbane for the ball were shocked by the number of members and the organisation.

“We recently attended the Italian students’ ball – throughout the whole evening, there were only two Italian songs played. At our ball on Sunday, no English songs made it to the playlist. The band even played leventiko, tsamika; there was a great range of modern and traditional Greek music. At the after party – we balanced it out with both English and Greek music,” Tass says with a laugh.

“It’s important for us to keep it that way, and people respond well to it.”

Labor and Liberal candidates for the seat of Oakleigh – Steve Dimopoulos and Theo Zographos – will present their parties’ track records and visions for transport this week – arguably the key policy issue that will determine the outcome of the state election on November 29.

In a rare opportunity to quiz the major candidates about transport issues and their parties’ platforms, the forum will be chaired by Monash University transport expert Professor Graham Currie.

Professor Currie said the event was a chance for voters to hear the views of all sides of politics and for voters to have their say.

“Transport is a major problem locally … and it’s time for the parties to stand up and be counted on their policies,” said the Monash academic.

The Greens’ candidate for Oakleigh Steven Merriel will also be taking part.

Steve Dimopoulos told Neos Kosmos that he looked forward to presenting Labor’s “long-term commitment to public transport and providing more passenger capacity and a safer network”.

Mr Dimopoulos said Labor’s “comprehensive plan to ease congestion by removing level crossings and investing in road infrastructure” showed that
Labor was “serious about these long-term commitments. They have not just been announced on the eve of an election”.

Labor has promised if elected to remove 50 of the worst level crossings in the state, to double the size of the city loop and operate free trams in central
Melbourne. It has also vowed that the Huntingdale Bus Interchange will finally be built.

Labor’s transport policy has targeted the creation of 10,000 jobs in the construction industry with $2bn earmarked for roads, including upgrading the Tullamarine Freeway and Hoddle Street as well as boosting arterial road funding.

On the other side of the political divide, Theo Zographos said the forum would give him an opportunity to present “the Napthine government’s strong record of delivering key public transport infrastructure such as removing the level crossings that Labor ignored, building new train stations, and creating 10,000 new weekly public transport services”.

Mr Zographos added that during the debate he would contrast “Labor’s horrible record of neglecting public transport during its period in government” with “the [Napthine government’s] biggest ever investment in public transport in Victoria’s history”.

In May’s state budget, Premier Denis Napthine announced the Melbourne Rail Link project to increase the capacity of Melbourne’s rail network by 30 per cent and deliver a link to Melbourne Airport.

Melbourne’s East West Link, with its price tag of $6.8bn ($2bn of which will come from Victorian taxpayers) is the cornerstone of the Napthine government’s road infrastructure plans. Labor has vowed to ditch the project if elected.

Whatever the policy differences between the two major parties, the result in Oakleigh will be a tight run thing. The only result a punter might put his money on is that the victor in 2014 will be of Greek heritage.

At the 2010 election Ann Barker held the seat for Labor by the tightest of margins, with only 262 votes separating them from the Liberals. Labor and the Liberal party gained 12,888 and 12,616 votes respectively.

After preferences, despite a 7.7 per cent swing against it, Labor took 54 per cent of the vote (two-party preferred), with Theo Zographos coming in second place for the Liberal Party on 45 per cent.

Having represented Oakleigh since 1999, Anne Barker will retire at this election.

The Monash Metropolitan Transport Forum is an initiative of a group of councils who are hosting meetings across Melbourne in the lead-up to the election.

Thessaloniki’s mayor Yiannis Boutaris and the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace George Orfanos will visit Melbourne in November to pay tribute to the 30-year anniversary of the sister city union, while bringing interested business people with them to create stronger trade ties.

Over 30 years the two cities have had a warm relationship, paying tribute to the fact that many who once called Thessaloniki home are now Melbourne locals.

As the two most populated Greek speaking cities outside of Athens, the relationship has mostly been ornamental.

Yet over the last couple of years, the link has become more involved, with closer trade ties being put on the table, and while there have been some promising signs, the interest from both parties seems to be waning.

Australia sent its first contingent to the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair in 2013 with a group of ten companies making the trip.

This year, only three companies made the trip, with the Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry saying the economic climate in Greece is to blame.

Last month at the Fine Food Australia trade show in Melbourne, half the number of Greek exporters made the trip to try and rustle up distributor interest.

Mr Orfanos will be bringing a small contingent of business people from Thessaloniki’s Trade Fair, including members from the food and beverage, tourism, construction and marble industries to meet interested business people in Melbourne in special joint White Tower and HACCI events.

The exhibition will happen over two days on November 20 and 21 at the Melbourne Town Hall and will provide both sides a chance to exchange ideas.

White Tower president, Paul Mavroudis, says they are trying hard to increase ties, even if numbers are dwindling.

“Before, it was just the sister cities relationship, nothing happened, but now we’re trying to do something about it. To bring people together, to do something different,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen but we’re trying hard.”

Mr Mavroudis was in Thessaloniki in August, and met with Mr Orfanos to discuss his trip and help things along.

Mr Orfanos told him that he’s very happy to be travelling to Melbourne and will be attending a number of events.

“They’re going to have some seminars in the Greek consulate and of course they’re going to be part of the Federation Square festival we have on 23 November,” Mr Mavroudis says.

Both Mr Orfanos and Mr Boutaris will be guests of honour at the huge annual festival.

The free event will showcase the best of Greece’s northern culture, with dancing groups, musical events and food stalls to entertain thousands of patrons.

Also planned is a special lecture on the ANZACS in Thessaloniki during World War I. Presented by historian Jim Claven and former MP John Pandazopoulos, the lecture will also include a photographic exhibition depicting WWI and WWII.

Before the dignitaries come, Greek Australian students will be able to take part in an excursion to Red Hill for a cultural day and picnic on November 1.

The goal is to give students the chance to experience the language, history and culture of Greece.

There will also be a dinner dance on November 22 to celebrate the anniversary, with ticket sales being donated to the Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture.
