Eπέστρεψε στη χώρα του με σκοπό να επισκεφτεί συγγενείς του.

Ένας Αφγανός, ο οποίος ζούσε επί 14 χρόνια στην Αυστραλία, βασανίστηκε και εκτελέστηκε από μέλη των Ταλιμπάν, όταν επέστρεψε στη χώρα του με σκοπό να επισκεφτεί συγγενείς του, μετέδωσε το ABC.

Ο Σαγιέντ Χαμπίμπ Μουσαουί, 56 ετών, δολοφονήθηκε από μέλη των Ταλιμπάν επειδή κατείχε αυστραλιανό διαβατήριο, δήλωσε στο ABC Αφγανός αξιωματούχος.
Ο αναπληρωτής κυβερνήτης της επαρχίας Γκάνζι, Μοχάμαντ Αλί Αχμάντι, δήλωσε ότι ο Μουσαουί υπέστη βασανιστήρια προτού οι Ταλιμπάν τον πυροβολήσουν 3 φορές.
«Ο λόγος φυσικά είναι πως ο Μουσαουί ήταν Αυστραλο-Αφγανός» δήλωσε ο Αχμαντί. «Ο άνδρας δεν έκανε κάτι λάθος. Δεν ήταν εγκληματίας. Δεν συμμετείχε σε κυβερνητικές δραστηριότητες».

Ο Μουσαουί έφτασε στην Αυστραλία το 2000 και πέντε χρόνια αργότερα ακολούθησαν η γυναίκα και τα παιδιά του.
Αυστραλός κυβερνητικός εκπρόσωπος δήλωσε ότι η πρεσβεία της χώρας στην Καμπούλ συνεχίζει τις προσπάθειες προκειμένου να επιβεβαιώσει τις πληροφορίες σχετικά με το θάνατο του Μουσαουί.

Πάνω από 300 Κούρδοι, πραγματοποίησαν διαδήλωση διαμαρτυρίας στο κέντρο του Σίδνεϊ ζητώντας από την Αυστραλία να τους βοηθήσει στρατιωτικά και ανθρωπιστικά.

Πάνω από 300 Κούρδοι, ορισμένοι από τους οποίους κρατούσαν σημαίες του Εργατικού Κόμματος Κουρδιστάν (PKK) -που η Αυστραλία μαζί με πολλές άλλες κυβερνήσεις της Δύσης, ακολουθώντας τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, είχαν χαρακτηρίσει πριν χρόνια εγκληματική και τρομοκρατική οργάνωση-, πραγματοποίησαν διαδήλωση διαμαρτυρίας στο κέντρο του Σίδνεϊ ζητώντας από την Αυστραλία να τους βοηθήσει στρατιωτικά και ανθρωπιστικά.

Τη διαδήλωση που έγινε την περασμένη Δευτέρα το απόγευμα στο Martin Place του Σίδνεϊ, οργάνωσε ο Αυστραλιανός Σύνδεσμος Κούρδων, για να βοηθηθούν οι συμπατριώτες τους στο Ιράκ και τη Συρία που κινδύνευαν με αφανισμό από το τζιχαντιστές του Ισλαμικού Κράτους που ήδη έχουν σκοτώσει εκατοντάδες Κούρδους στο βόρειο Ιράκ και τη βορειοανατολική Συρία.

Από τον περασμένο Ιούνιο που η ISIS κατέλαβε τη Μοσούλη, τη δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πόλη του Ιράκ, και εξοπλίστηκε με βαριά αμερικανικά όπλα τελευταίας τεχνολογίας, που πήρε από τον ιρακινό στρατό που εγκατέλειψε την πόλη και τράπηκε σε άτακτη φυγή, έχει αρχίσει εθνοκάθαρση στην περιοχή που ελέγχει.
Μεταξύ άλλων, στην περιοχή που ελέγχουν τόσο στο Ιράκ όσο και στην Συρία στην κορυφή της λίστας τοποθέτησαν του Κούρδους αναγκάζοντας τους να εγκαταλείπουν τον τόπο που κατοικούν για πάρα πολλούς αιώνες.

Εκτός από το Ισλαμικό Κράτος στο στόχαστρο των Κούρδων της Αυστραλίας έχει μπει και η Τουρκία την οποία και κατηγορούν για «γενοκτονία».
Μην ξεχνάμε ότι το αντάρτικο του PKK κατά της Τουρκίας, που τελείωσε στα μέσα της περασμένης δεκαετίας διήρκεσε 30 χρόνια όταν οι Κούρδοι της Νοτιοανατολικής Τουρκίας προσπάθησαν να αυτονομηθούν και να δημιουργήσουν το δικό τους κράτος στην Ανατολική Τουρκία και στο Βόρειο Ιράκ.

Αυτός είναι και λόγος, που ανησυχία των Τουρκία για το «Κουρδικό πρόβλημα» έχει κορυφωθεί μετά την έναρξη του εμφυλίου στην Συρία και έχει πάρει τις διαστάσεις εφιάλτη μετά την κατάληψη μέρους του Βορείου Ιράκ από το Ισλαμικό κράτος που έχει τη δική του ατζέντα.

Οι Τούρκοι φοβούνται και δικαιολογημένα ότι ο εξοπλισμός των Κούρδων του Ιράκ από τις Δυτικές χώρες όπως η Αυστραλία, προκειμένου να πολεμήσουν τους τζιχαντιστές μπορεί να συμβάλει ώστε η αιματηρή σύρραξη να επεκταθεί και στην Νοτιοανατολική Τουρκία και σε αυτόν εκτός των ντόπιων Κούρδων να πολεμήσουν και οι εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες Κούρδοι πρόσφυγες από τη Συρία και το Ιράκ.

Αναφερόμενος στο θέμα, ο πρόεδρος του Αυστραλιανού Συνδέσμου των Κούρδων, Gulfer Olan, είπε ότι στόχος της διαδήλωσης είναι να ενημερώσουν τον αυστραλιανό λαό ότι οι Κούρδοι ολόκληρης της περιοχής κινδυνεύουν με αφανισμό αν δεν κινητοποιηθεί για να τους βοηθήσει η διεθνής κοινότητα.
Ήδη, εκατοντάδες άτομα, όπως είπε, έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες.

Μεταξύ των αθώων θυμάτων είναι πολλά παιδιά και γυναίκες, οι οποίες, επίσης, πέφτουν και θύματα βιασμών.
Η Αυστραλία ήδη έχει βοηθήσει με όπλα τους Κούρους του Βόρειου Ιράκ, ενώ λάχει λάβει ενεργά μέρος στην ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια που τους προσφέρεται εδώ και ένα τρίμηνο.

Σύμφωνα με δημοσκόπηση της Essential Research για την εφημερίδα «The Age».

Δύο μήνες πριν τις πολιτειακές εκλογές το Εργατικό Κόμμα διατηρεί προβάδισμα νίκης. Δημοσκόπηση της Essential Research για την εφημερίδα «The Age», δίνει προβάδισμα τεσσάρων μονάδων στο Εργατικό Κόμμα, διαφορά που αν ισχύσει στις πολιτειακές εκλογές της 29ης Νοεμβρίου η κυβέρνηση Napthine θα καταποντιστεί.
Αν είχαν γίνει πολιτειακές εκλογές το περασμένο Σάββατο, το Εργατικό Κόμμα θα είχε επανέλθει στην εξουσία με 52% των ψήφων έναντι 48% του Συνασπισμού Λίμπεραλ-Νάσιοναλ Πάρτι. Και η προχθεσινή δημοσκόπηση ενισχύσει την εκτίμηση, ότι αν στις εξήντα ημέρες που απομένουν μέχρι τις εκλογές δεν αλλάξει η διάθεση του εκλογικού σώματος, η κυβέρνηση Napthine θα είναι η πρώτη πολιτειακή κυβέρνηση μίας θητείας από το 1950.

Κυβέρνηση και αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση ισοψηφούν στην πρώτη κατανομή με 39% των ψήφων. Οι Πράσινοι παραμένουν τρίτη πολιτική δύναμη της Βικτώριας με 11% των ψήφων. Μετά την κατανομή των σταυρών δεύτερης προτίμησης των μικρών πολιτικών κομμάτων, το Εργατικό Κόμμα διατηρεί την πρωτοπορία που απολαμβάνει από το Μάρτιο.

Η πορεία της οικονομίας και η ανεργία και «καίνε» την κυβέρνηση Napthine, με μόνο το 15% των ερωτηθέντων να δηλώνουν «ικανοποιημένοι» από την εργασιακή πολιτική του Συνασπισμού. Το Σεπτέμβριο το ποσοστό ανεργίας στη Βικτώρια σκαρφάλωσε στο 6,8% του εργατικού δυναμικού της Πολιτείας – κατά 0,7% υψηλότερα από το εθνικό ποσοστό ανεργίας. Εκτιμάται, ότι η ανεργία θα συνεχίσει την ανοδική πορεία της όταν θα κλείσουν τα εργοστάσια της Holden, της Toyota και της Ford στη Μελβούρνη και το Geelong.

Οι ψηφοφόροι δηλώνουν δυσαρεστημένοι και από την πολιτική της κυβέρνησης για τις δημόσιες συγκοινωνίες, το πρόβλημα που ανέτρεψε την πρώην Εργατική κυβέρνηση John Brumby. Από τους ερωτηθέντες ψηφοφόρους, το 23%, μόνο, δηλώνουν «ικανοποιημένοι» από την κυβερνητική πολιτική, το 36% «δυσαρεστημένοι» και οι υπόλοιποι «δεν γνωρίζουν/ δεν απαντούν». Πάντως, η εντύπωση των ψηφοφόρων για τη διαχείριση των συγκοινωνιών έχει «βελτιωθεί» τον τελευταίο χρόνο, μετά και την υπόσχεση του κ. Napthine να επεκτείνει τον υπόγειο σιδηρόδρομο και να συνδέσει σιδηροδρομικά τοπ κέντρο της Μελβούρνης με το αεροδρόμιο.

Η πλειοψηφία (40%) των ψηφοφόρων κρίνει ως «καλή» την κυβερνητική πολιτική για τη δημόσια τάξη, έναντι 19% που τη θεωρούν «μέτρια». Προφανώς, η εκτίμηση των ψηφοφόρων επηρεάζεται από τα αυξημένα μέτρα ασφαλείας που λαμβάνονται για την προστασία του λαού από τρομοκρατική επίθεση.

Anna Vissi is in town for a brief concert tour.

Greek pop superstar Anna Vissi will meet again with her Sydney Greek Australian fans, where she will appear tonight as part of her 2014 Australian tour, exclusive to Perth and Sydney.

Vissi will make her WA debut on Friday night, in what was expected to be a sold out event at HBF Stadium in Mt Claremont.

Often referred to as the Kylie Minogue of Greece, the charismatic singer has nearly 40 years’ experience as a performer and has released 30 albums during her illustrious career.

Vissi, who recorded On A Night Like This six months before Minogue took on the hit single, told Australian media earlier this week she couldn’t wait to met her Perth fans.

“It’s always good to go somewhere people miss you and they haven’t seen you for a while,” the 56-year-old told Access All Areas.

“It’s so great because it’s my first time and I’m going to be performing before an enthusiastic Greek audience.”

When it comes to choosing a setlist, Vissi has a huge back catalogue of songs to choose from, some of which are more appealing to her than others.

“I love all of my songs although I’m a bit bored with a few because I’ve been doing them for a long time,” she said.

“When I get bored with my songs I change the orchestration and take it somewhere else so that it makes it fresh for me.”

The singer hopes to impress fans with help from a 15-piece band of traditional Greek musicians.

“It’s an adventurous team,” Vissi said. “There will be a lot of musicians and some backing vocals; it’s a big group actually.

“It’s a very Greek thing if I may say – we’re used to that.”

According to Neos Kosmos’ sources, after her Perth and Sydney performances, Anna Vissi will make a surprise visit to Melbourne.

Catching a ride on the tube, hundreds of Spartans in London.

An army of Spartan warriors descended upon London with a mission in mind.

Clad in just leather pants and capes, they brandished their spears to the bemusement of commuters in London’s metro. Some of the Spartan men even jumped on board to hitch a ride, sitting down with commuters on the way to work.

Thankfully, they were not there to wage war with Londoners. Instead they were called upon to promote the DVD release of 300: Rise of an Empire.

A suspected terror plot had chairman of Olympiakos soccer team, Vangelis Marinakis, and the head of the Federation of Hellenic Industries, Theodoros Fessas in sight.

Police said a terrorist attack that had been planned for the weekend was foiled at the last minute with the arrest of a suspected accomplice of the jailed Revolutionary Struggle leader Nikos Maziotis, noting that the offices of New Democracy had been among the likely targets for the hit.

Greek Police Chief Dimitris Tsaknakis announced the arrest of the suspect, who was said to be aged between 25 and 30 but who was not named, at a press conference delivered jointly with Public Order Minister Vassilis Kikilias. He was to be charged later in the day with membership of a terrorist organization.

The suspect had with him a notebook with the names and addresses of prominent businessmen – notably the shipowner and chairman of Olympiakos soccer team, Vangelis Marinakis, and the head of the Federation of Hellenic Industries, Theodoros Fessas – as well as the telephone number of the Association of Greek Shipowners, whose president is Theodoros Veniamis. The notebook also contained references to New Democracy and the firms Capital, Siemens and Infoquest. The notes suggested that the offices of Capital and Infoquest would be staked out on October 1 and 2 and that rehearsal for the hit would be carried out on October 3 with the actual attack on October 4.

As New Democracy’s 40th anniversary is on October 4, police think an attack against the party was likely on the cards.

Undercover officers had been observing the suspect for several days and finally arrested him late on Wednesday outside a garage in the Athens neighborhood of Vyronas, Tsaknakis said. The arrest was carried out in the context of the ongoing search for Maziotis’s wife Panagiota Roupa, he added. Maziotis was arrested last July in a shootout in central Athens after nearly two years on the run.

A search on the garage turned up the roof rack and keys of the stolen Nissan that was used in a car bomb outside the Bank of Greece last April that was subsequently claimed by Revolutionary Struggle. The suspect’s contract for the rental of the garage bore Maziotis’s fingerprints, Kikilias added.

Beer on the up in Greece, mostly thanks to price.

Beer is showing robust resistance to the overall decline in the alcoholic beverages market in Greece, the latest statistics have shown.

Beer sales posted an increase in the first seven months of the year both in the so-called warm market (supermarkets, small retail points etc) and the cold market (restaurants, entertainment venues etc). Given that the data do not include the rest of the summer, it is possible that the rise in beer sales will be far greater for the whole of the year thanks to the country’s record tourism arrivals.

IRI research data showed beer market turnover in the year to end-July to have reached 123.4 million euros at retail chains and small sales points (such as kiosks), recording 1.4 per cent growth from the same period in 2013.

There was also a 3.2 per cent increase in sales volume, which reached 58.1 million litres.

In addition, there was a remarkable 1.1 per cent yearly rise in consumption at catering establishments, in contrast to the rest of the alcohol market.

Besides tourism, the market’s expansion is attributed to the lower prices in comparison with the other alcoholic drinks, to the development of a great variety of brands with a broad price range, as well as the increase in consumption at home as a result of people reining in their nights out since the start of the economic crisis.

IRI account manager Nikolaos Skaros commented that the rise in sales is mostly attributed to the strengthening of cheaper brands and the rise in promotional activity.

Price plays a key role in Greeks’ preferences, especially during a financial crisis, hence the rise in sales of cheaper-brand beer and supermarket brands.

Giorgios Karagounis will stay in Greece to help the national team. Photo: AAP.

Greece says it has reached an agreement with former captain Giorgos Karagounis to join the national team staff, as the midfielder ends a playing career that included European Championship glory in 2004.

The soccer association said the 37-year-old midfielder would work alongside new national coach Claudio Ranieri, but said details of his new position remained to be worked out.

Karagounis ended his international career at the World Cup in Brazil, making his 139th appearance in the second-round penalty shootout loss to Costa Rica.

It was unclear whether he would continue with club soccer after a second season at Fulham last year.

A longtime star at Greek club Panathinaikos, Karagounis also played for Inter Milan and Benfica.

Last year the Greek international was in talks with then Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou to lure him to the A-League, to become the Victory’s own Alessandro Del Piero, but Karagounis decided to stay at Fulham.

Luxurios Palazzo Papadopoli belonged to a noble Greek family.

The wedding of the most wanted Hollywood bachelor George Clooney with his human rights lawyer girlfriend Amal Alamuddin grabbed headlines last weekend around the world, but it their choice of venue that had Greeks proud.

The wedding was hosted in Venice, Italy but the was the luxurious Venetian palace that Clooney and Alamuddin chose to celebrate their big day, actually belonged to a noble family of Greek origin.

The construction of the palace, built in 1550 by the family of wealthy merchants and seamen of ‘Cochinna’, was assigned to the architect Gian Giacomo de Grigi. Nicolas Papadopoulos (Niccolò Papadopoli), who in 1905 changed his surname to Papadopoli Aldobrandini, was an Italian politician.

He came from an aristocratic family of Greek origin and in 1905 got permission to add his name to the last name of his wife, Maddalena Aldobrandini, who was the daughter of a wealthy family of intellectuals.

The couple then bought the famous palace, which became known as Palazzo Papadopoli.

From its construction until 1837, when it passed to the Papadopoli family, the palace changed several owners who have created impressive libraries and gathered priceless art treasures from across the world.

Papadopoulos made ​​renovations and bought two adjacent buildings to create gardens, which was unusual for those times.

The Palazzo Papadopoli was one of the first buildings of Venice that had electricity and telephone connection but was also known for its legendary parties.

In 1922, the Palazzo passed to Papadopoulos’ heirs, the noble family Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga. The top floor was given to the Institute of Marine Sciences from the 1980s to 2005.

In 2007, it was sold to a Swiss company and is now owned by the luxury hotel chain ‘Aman’.

Professor Nikos Lygeros accepts an Australian boomerang from young Pontians.

“We won! We are here!

“We won against the plans of the genocidaires because we are here and remind them of their crimes.”

This was the essence of the address by the keynote speaker, Professor Nikos Lygeros, a research fellow at the University of Lyon, France, to a well attended Commemoration of the Genocide of the Hellenes of Pontos, Asia Minor and Thrace, held at New South Wales Parliament House last week.
The commemoration was the result of the cooperation of a number of organisations including the Order of AHEPA NSW and NZ (main sponsor of Professor Lygeros’ visit), the ‘Pontoxeniteas’, ‘Panayia Soumela’ and ‘Diogenes’ Pontian associations of Sydney and Wollongong.

‘Unity is strength’ was another of the Commemoration’s main messages, conveyed as much by the organisers as by the keynote speaker. Professor Lygeros emphasised the significance of the unity of the victims – be they Hellenes, Armenians, Assyrians or Jews. This was underlined by the delegations of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, the Assyrian Universal Alliance, Sydney’s Armenian community and others who lent their support for the Hellenic Genocide Commemoration in their own ways.

“The purpose of the genocidaires is the extermination of the victims, the cessation of the continuity of the Hellenes, the Armenians, the Assyrians, the Jews and others,” continued Professor Lygeros. “To deny to those yet unborn even the right to life. This is why we must persist in demanding recognition of the genocides by all the parliaments of Australia.”

Speaking about his visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum, Professor Lygeros stressed the importance of such installations for the continuity of historical memory, of the continuity of the peoples who have endured genocide. He stated further that there must be created in Sydney a similar museum for all genocides, so that we do not forget, so that such events are not repeated.

The Master of Ceremonies, Dr Panayiotis Diamadis (state secretary of the Order of AHEPA NSW and NZ and lecturer in genocide Studies, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) opened the commemoration with a phrase from the 6th century BCE mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras: ‘ΤΑΣ ΛΕΩΦΟΡΟΥΣ ΜΗ ΒΑΔΙΖΕΙΣ’ – Do not follow the well-trodden path.

Those who attended last week’s commemoration did not follow the well-trodden path. In their addresses, David Clarke MLC (Parliamentary Secretary for Justice, Liberal Party) and the Rev. Fred Nile MLC (Christian Democratic Party) related the threats, pressures and bribery attempts they had been subjected to by Turkish authorities in Ankara and Australia, and their local adjuncts. The two supporters of the Australian Hellenic community, who played leading roles in the formal recognition of the genocides of the Hellenes, Armenians and Assyrians by the parliament of New South Wales in May 2013, re-emphasised the significance of the unity of peoples against genocidaires, especially today, when a new wave of genocidal action has been unleashed against the indigenous Assyrians and the Armenians of Syria and Iraq.

Fred Nile told the assembly of his pride in having the framed photographs of the Holy Monastery of Panayia Soumela Trapezountas in his parliamentary office, gifts of the Pontian associations of New South Wales at the 2013 Genocide Commemoration.

In his message to the commemorative event, Consul-General of Greece in Sydney Dr Stavros Kyrimis stated that it is our obligation to humanity to remind everyone of the values of Western civilisation: acceptance of difference, human rights, democracy.
