La Trobe University’s Centre of Dialogue to receive $50,000 for taking out the top prize.

Dr Michalis S Michael was awarded with a peace prize in Constantinople-Istanbul for his work at La Trobe University’s Centre for Dialogue on the peaceful resolution to the Cyprus problem.

Both Michael and the Centre were honoured by the Journalist and Writers Foundation, beating 1179 projects to take out a $50,000 top prize.
As deputy director of the Centre, Dr Michael has researched a number of areas of conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue.

His project “Dialogical Roadmap towards resolving the Cyprus conflict” took out the top prize, an award that supports innovative and significant conflict resolution and peace-making projects focusing on preventing, managing and resolving violent conflicts and promote post-conflict peace-building.
To get through, Dr Michael had to go through a four-step process that ended with an interview with an international jury in Istanbul.

Dr Micahel said the award rightly honours the work the Centre of Dialogue does for international conflict and resolution.

“This award is yet another international recognition of the world-class work that the Centre for Dialogue does in the areas of peace-building and conflict transformation by combining research, policy development and community engagement,” he said.

Dr Michael hopes with the award, funding won’t be cut for the Centre. With the prize money he hopes to implement many of the Centre’s projects.

“Obviously as academics we are humbled by such an honour, but we also feel somewhat vindicated by the recognition we often receive overseas especially during these times when the sort of research and community work we do is under threat,” he says.

“This award encourages and motivates my project team to move from planning to the implementing phase.”

Για ακόμη μια φορά, συγκεντρώθηκαν στο Όκλεϊ τα Ελληνόπουλα της Μελβούρνης, σήμερα στις 8 το πρωί, για να παρακολουθήσουν τον αγώνα της Εθνικής μας ομάδας ποδοσφαίρου ενάντια σε αυτήν της Ιαπωνίας.

Η γνωστή περιοχή, πλημμύρισε γαλανόλευκες σημαίες και κασκόλ από τις 7.00 το πρωί. Μαθητές και μαθήτριες από πολλά κοντινά σχολεία και κολλέγια, ξεσήκωναν με τα συνθήματά τους και τους υπόλοιπους θεατές του αγώνα και έδιναν παλμό στην «εξέδρα».

Παρόλο το χειμωνιάτικο κλίμα, η αγωνία της εξέλιξης του παιχνιδιού, τους κράτησε όλους ζεστούς μέχρι το φινάλε, όπου πανηγυρίστηκε το θετικό αποτέλεσμα.

Το ραντεβού πλέον δόθηκε, για τον επόμενο αγώνα της Εθνικής μας με την αντίστοιχη της Ακτής Ελεφαντοστού και την ελπίδα όλων, το ταξίδι της ομάδας μας στα γήπεδα της Βραζιλίας να συνεχιστεί.

MIGALOO, the most famous white whale since Moby Dick, made a splash off Port Stephens on Friday as he heads north for tropical waters.

The famous humpback dubbed the Holy Grail of whale watching attracted a flotilla of watchers as he cruised past the region at a steady four knots (8km/hr).

The whale’s arrival came just a day after he entertained Sydney spotters heading past Cronulla.

While some feared Migaloo would steer away from the region’s coast and make it north unseen, he delivered one spectacular breach in perfect conditions about three miles off Port Stephens late on Friday.

Imagine Cruises skipper Frank Future, whose crew member Lisa Skelton captured the leaping whale, said he had been waiting years to spot the spectacular creature in the flesh.

‘‘He’s not got a barnacle on him,’’ Mr Future said.

‘‘He’s just like marble.’’

A week from Saturday marks 23 years since a white whale was first photographed passing Byron Bay.

Named Migaloo after a Queensland Aboriginal community’s word for ‘‘white fella’’, he was the world’s only known all-white humpback until MJ, or Migaloo Junior, was found in 2011.

Mr Future said Migaloo was travelling north as part of the annual northern migration, when humpbacks abandon their Antarctic feeding grounds for warmer waters to the north for breeding before they return in September.

While Migaloo was the main attraction, Mr Future said he was far from lonely as he swam past Anna Bay and Port Stephens.

‘‘He had a cluster of whales around him, he’s a popular lad,’’ Mr Future said.

Brazil have Neymar. Argentina have Lionel Messi. Portugal have Cristiano Ronaldo. Sometimes superstars lead to a simplification of football. They encourage us to ignore their 10 team-mates and focus on the famous faces.

But sometimes they just win matches and justify their lofty billing. Because, as England know to their cost, Uruguay have Luis Suarez. The PFA Player of the Year and the Footballer of the Year had already established a status as the scourge of English defences. Now he can add the England defence to his list of victims. Even semi-fit, Suarez is deadly enough to be a match-winner. It finished Suarez 2 England 1.

His vocal band of backers among the Liverpool support believe he belongs alongside Messi and Ronaldo among the world’s top three. Others make a case for Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Andres Iniesta or England’s other nemesis, Andrea Pirlo.

There is a common denominator. None of those are English. The High Court has issued a stunning rebuke to the Abbott government’s border protection policy, striking down its decision to refuse to give refugees who arrive by boat permanent protection visas.

In two unanimous decisions, with implications for thousands of boats arrivals, the full court ruled that Immigration Minister Scott Morrison’s decision to impose a cap on the number of places in Australia’s refugee intake for boat arrivals was invalid.

The government’s determination to deny permanent protection visas will now rest with the Senate, where the Palmer United Party will control the balance of power from next month.

The party’s leader, Clive Palmer, has spoken out strongly in support of refugees, but told Fairfax Media the party would study the High Court judgment and any decision on allowing temporary protection visas would be made by his party room.

Mr Morrison re-imposed the refugee intake cap in March after the Senate voted down his attempt to re-introduce temporary protection visas (TPVs) for boat arrivals, declaring that the Coalition would “not give an inch when it comes to protecting our borders”.

He vowed then to take “every step necessary to ensure that people who arrive illegally by boat are not rewarded with permanent visas”. Mr Morrison, who has presided as minister over six months without a boat arrival, was travelling when the judgment was handed down and was unavailable for comment.

His March decision effectively imposed a freeze on the grant of permanent protection visas to about 1400 asylum seekers who had already been found to be refugees and has implications for many thousands more whose claims have not yet been decided.

“This is a very significant victory for the rule of law being brought to bear on the plight of refugees in our country,” said lawyer David Manne, who led the legal team representing an Ethiopian teenager who arrived in Australia without a visa last year, after stowing away on a cargo ship.

A second decision upheld a challenge on behalf of a Pakistani national who arrived by boat at Christmas Island in 2012.

In both cases, the court ordered Mr Morrison as minister to consider and determine the asylum seekers’ applications for a protection visa according the law as it stands.

Labor and the Greens welcomed the decision, with Labor’s immigration spokesman, Richard Marles, saying: “Putting a freeze on the issuing of protection visas just because the Senate rejected the government’s TPVs was always an act of petulance which caused great misery.”

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young described the ruling as “a win for fairness and decency”, saying: “The court has ruled that the Abbott government’s cruelty for cruelty sake is illegal. This decision will allow refugees to start rebuilding their lives here in Australia.”

Sister Brigid Arthur, who acted as “litigation guardian” for the Ethiopian boy, said it was “very good that he will now have some certainty about his future”.

Mr Manne, who also led the legal team that successfully challenged the Labor government’s “Malaysian solution”, said the latest decision had “potentially major implications” for thousands of refugees who arrived by boat.

“The law of Australia is that there is only one protection visa, and that’s a permanent protection visa for refugees. What this means is that the government must get on with the grant of a visa which our client is entitled to as a refugee,” he said.

He said the life of the boy had been in limbo since Mr Morrison imposed the freeze.

In their written judgment, justices Hayne and Kiefel said they had taken into account the consequences for the detention of those who came unlawfully and the time limits for determining protection visas.

Τα ψάρια που ξέβρασε η θάλασσα στην ακτή Ninety Mile

Τα ξέβρασε η θάλασσα στην παραλία Ninety Mile του Gippsland.

Στα ρεύματα του κρύου νερού που κινούνται τέτοια εποχή από την παγωμένη Ανταρκτική προς Βορρά ενδεχομένως να οφείλεται ο θάνατος χιλιάδων ψαριών που ξέβρασε η θάλασσα στην παραλία Ninety Mile του Gippsland της Βικτώριας.

Έκπληκτoi έμειναν οι επισκέπτες της γνωστής παραλίας, όταν αντίκρισαν χιλιάδες ψάρια νεκρά πριν λίγες μέρες, ενώ παρόμοιο φαινόμενο έλαβε χώρα και σε παραλίες της Τασμανίας.

Σύμφωνα με την Αρχή Προστασίας Περιβάλλοντος, οι πρώτες εξετάσεις που έγιναν σε νεκρά ψάρια απέκλεισαν την πιθανότητα να οφείλεται ο θάνατός τους στη μόλυνση του νερού, ενώ οι ειδικοί συγκλίνουν στην άποψη ότι τα ψάρια πέθαναν λόγω του κρύου νερού που έφθασε στις ανατολικές παραλίες της Αυστραλίας από την Ανταρκτική.
Τα ψάρια προτιμούν πιο ζεστά νερά, αναφέρεται στη σχετική ανακοίνωση της Αρχής Προστασίας Περιβάλλοντος.

Με πρόστιμο μέχρι και $1,1 εκ. θα τιμωρήσει το Ομοσπονδιακό Δικαστήριο την αλυσίδα σουπερμάρκετ Coles για την πολύκροτη υπόθεση του κατεψυγμένου ψωμιού -εν μέρει- που παρουσίαζε ως φρεσκοψημένο. Το διαφήμιζε ως “Baked today – Sold today” (Φουρνίστηκε σήμερα – Πουλήθηκε αυθημερόν).

Η απόφαση προειδοποιεί και όλους τους άλλους που χρησιμοποιούν παρόμοιες μεθόδους για προώθηση των προϊόντων τους να είναι περισσότερο προσεκτικοί.

Ο αρχιδικαστής του Ομοσπονδιακού Δικαστηρίου, James Alisop, αποφάσισε ότι για τον συνηθισμένο πολίτη, η διαφήμιση “Baked today – Sold today”, σημαίνει ότι το ψωμί φουρνίστηκε την ίδια μέρα που μπαίνει στα ράφια για πώληση.
«Τα δικαστήρια θα πρέπει να είναι πολύ προσεκτικά να μην επιτρέπουν στους καταναλωτές να παρασύρονται από φράσεις οι οποίες έχουν επιλεγεί με την προϋπόθεση ότι όσα λέγονται σε μια διαφήμιση δεν ανταποκρίνονται υποχρεωτικά στην πραγματικότητα». Η όλη υπόθεση με το «φρέσκο» ψωμί του Coles, ξεκίνησε με τον πρώην πρωθυπουργό της Βικτώριας, Τζεφ Κέννετ, όταν, τακτικός πελάτης του Coles, όπως θα πει, αγόρασε ένα ψωμί που πουλιόταν ως «της ημέρας» και φουρνισμένο στον τόπο της πώλησης μετά διάβασε στο περιτύλιγμά του “Made in Ireland”.

Σήμερα, μετά τη δικαστική απόφαση, θα πει ότι η απόφαση του δικαστηρίου στέλνει ένα δυνατό μήνυμα προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις ότι ο καταναλωτής θα πρέπει να βρίσκει ότι η προώθηση προϊόντων ανταποκρίνεται, πέραν κάθε αμφιβολίας στην πραγματικότητα.

«Παρ’ ότι είμαι μεγάλος υποστηρικτής των Coles, βρήκα τη διαφήμιση να είναι άκρως παραπλανητική» προσθέτοντας ότι η απόφαση του δικαστηρίου δεν ήταν μια νίκη για τον ίδιο, αλλά για την κοινή λογική.

Αρνήθηκαν να παραλάβουν τη σορό ενός άνδρα καθώς έκριναν ότι ήταν πολύ μεγάλη για να τη διατηρήσουν.

Οι υπεύθυνοι ενός νεκροτομείου σε νοσοκομείο του Περθ αρνήθηκαν να παραλάβουν τη σορό ενός άνδρα που ζύγιζε 200 κιλά καθώς έκριναν ότι ήταν πολύ μεγάλη για να τη διατηρήσουν και ανάγκασαν μια εργολάβο κηδειών να την αφήσει στο αυτοκίνητό της κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας με τον κλιματισμό αναμμένο.

Την είδηση μετέδωσε το ABC. Η Τζοάνε Κάμινγκς δήλωσε ότι πήγαινε και ήλεγχε τη σορό κάθε μισή ώρα κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας, ενώ το πρωί νοίκιασε ένα φορτηγό ψυγείο για τη διατήρηση της σορού μέχρι την κηδεία.

Ένας εκπρόσωπος των υπηρεσιών υγείας είπε στο ABC ότι το νεκροτομείο μπορεί να παραλάβει σορούς που ζυγίζουν έως 150 κιλά, ωστόσο τώρα σκέφτεται να εγκαταστήσει εξοπλισμό που θα επιτρέπει την υποδοχή σορών που θα ζυγίζουν έως 300 κιλά.

Ο υφ. Κυριάκος Γεροντόπουλος, είναι ανοικτός σε όλες τις προτάσεις που ενδεχομένως θα κατατεθούν στην σύσκεψη που έχει προσδιοριστεί για την Πέμπτη 3 Ιουλίου 2014.

Σύμφωνα με έγκυρες πληροφορίες της Panhehellenic Post, στο προτεινόμενο σχέδιο Νόμου, μεταξύ άλλων προβλέπονται και τα ακόλουθα:
Παραμένει ο διεκδικητικός χαρακτήρας του ΣΑΕ στο νέο Σχέδιο Νόμου επί του οποίου θα κληθεί να εισηγηθεί η Οργανωτική και Αναθεωρητική Επιτροπή που θα συνέλθει στις 3 Ιουλίου 2014 στο Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών.

Παράλληλα, το νέο ΣΑΕ θα μπορεί να αναπτύσσει διάφορες δράσεις στα πλαίσια συγχρηματοδοτούμενων Προγραμμάτων της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, του ΟΗΕ ΟΟΣΑ, ΕΚΟ κλπ.

Μέλη του νέου ΣΑΕ θα είναι φυσικά και νομικά πρόσωπα.
Θα είναι διαρθρωμένο σε επτά Περιφέρειες, με επταμελή εξελεγκτική Επιτροπή.
Κάθε συντονιστικό θα έχει επτά μέλη από τα οποία θα εκλέγεται ένα μέλος που θα αντιπροσωπεύει την Περιφέρεια στο Προεδρείο. Το πρόσωπο αυτό μπορεί να είναι ο συντονιστής της Περιφέρειας ή ένα από τα υπόλοιπα έξη μέλη του συντονιστικού.

Το Προεδρείο θα είναι επταμελές. Από τα επτά μέλη του θα εκλέγεται Πρόεδρος, Αντιπρόεδρος, Γραμματέας και Ταμίας.
Στο προεδρείο θα συμμετέχουν χωρίς δικαίωμα ψήφου, εκπρόσωπος του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, της ΠΣΕΚΑ (Παγκόσμια Συντονιστική Επιτροπή Κυπριακού Αγώνα) και της Πα.Δ.Ε.Ε. (Παγκόσμια Διακοινοβουλευτική Ένωση Ελληνισμού).

Καταργείται ο θεσμός της Παγκόσμιας Γενικής Συνέλευσης (σ.σ. στη Θεσσαλονίκη).
Το ΣΑΕ σε κάθε Περιφέρεια θα λάβει νομική μορφή ανάλογη με τα νομικά κρατούντα κάθε χώρας ενώ στην Ελλάδα ισχύει η απόφαση του ΑΠ ότι είναι Sui generis Νομικό Πρόσωπο.

Συντονιστές και συμβούλια θα έχουν ενιαίο ψηφοδέλτιο και συντονιστής θα εκλέγεται ο έχων τον μεγαλύτερο αριθμό ψήφων.
Θα συνεχισθεί ο θεσμός της Ετήσιας Έκθεσης που θα υποβάλλεται την πρώτη κάθε Έτους στον Πρόεδρο της Βουλής ενώ κάθε τρεις μήνες θα το προεδρείο θα συμμετέχει στην Μόνιμη Επιτροπή της Βουλής για τον Απόδημο ελληνισμό ενώ εκπρόσωπος θα παρίσταται σε όλες τις συνεδριάσεις της Μόνιμης Επιτροπής .
Το προεδρείο του ΣΑΕ θα ενημερώνεται εγκαίρως από τον καθ΄ ύλην αρμόδιο υπουργό ή τον αρμόδιο υφυπουργό για θέματα Αποδήμου Ελληνισμού για τα νομοσχέδια επί θεμάτων Αποδήμου Ελληνισμού.

Στην εισηγητική Έκθεση θα υπάρχουν οι προτάσεις Γιανναρά, χωρίς, όμως, την αμφισβητούμενη αναφορά ότι το ΣΑΕ μπορεί να αναλαμβάνει δράσεις επί εθνικών κλπ. θεμάτων κάτι που αν ίσχυε, θα είχε συνέπειες σε ορισμένες τουλάχιστον χώρες, όπως στις ΗΠΑ όπου η Περιφέρεια θα ήταν υποχρεωμένη να εγγραφεί στους ειδικούς καταλόγους οργανώσεων που εξυπηρετούν τα συμφέροντα άλλης χώρας…

Τέλος, σε ό,τι αφορά την αυτοχρηματοδότηση του νέου ΣΑΕ, αυτή, σύμφωνα με το Σχέδιο, δύναται να προέλθει από ετήσιες συνδρομές μελών (οργανισμών και φυσικών προσώπων), από δωρεές τρίτων, εισφορές, χορηγίες, κληρονομιές κλπ.

Έδρα του ΣΑΕ παραμένει η Θεσσαλονίκη και τα γραφεία του θα φιλοξενούνται στο Υπουργείο Μακεδονίας-Θράκης ενώ αμφίβολη είναι η διατήρηση του Ιδρύματος Απόδημου Ελληνισμού.

ΑΝΟΙΚΤΟΙ ΣΕ ΠΡΟΤΑΣΕΙΣ

Πάντως, όπως είναι σε θέση να γνωρίζει η ΡΗΡ, ο υφυπουργός Κυριάκος Γεροντόπουλος, είναι ανοικτός σε όλες τις προτάσεις που ενδεχομένως θα κατατεθούν στην σύσκεψη που, όπως εισαγωγικά αναφέραμε, έχει προσδιοριστεί για την Πέμπτη 3 Ιουλίου 2014.
Για το σκοπό αυτό, απεστάλη ήδη προς τα μέλη της Επιτροπής το προσχέδιο του Νομοσχεδίου ώστε να το μελετήσουν και να τοποθετηθούν επ’ αυτού κατά την σύσκεψη.

Υπενθυμίζεται ότι όπως ήδη έχει γράψει η ΡΗΡ, ο Υφυπουργός Κυριάκος Γεροντόπουλος προγραμματίζει για τις επόμενες μέρες και, πάντως, πριν από την επόμενη σύσκεψη της Επιτροπής τον Ιούλιο, νέες συναντήσεις με εκπροσώπους κομμάτων ώστε να έχει τις τελικές τους απόψεις επί του νομοσχεδίου.
Αντιρρήσεις φαίνεται -σύμφωνα με ορισμένες μη διασταυρωμένες πληροφορίες- να εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν κυρίως από πλευράς ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, ως προς την μεικτή εκπροσώπηση στο ΣΑΕ Οργανώσεων και φυσικών προσώπων.

Βασική γραμμή του Υφυπουργού κ. Γεροντόπουλου παραμένει η κατά το δυνατόν ευρύτερη συναίνεση, ώστε το Νομοσχέδιο να περάσει με μεγάλη πλειοψηφία τόσο από την αρμόδια Επιτροπή της Βουλής όσο και από την Ολομέλεια.

Κατόπιν αυτών, ενδέχεται να υπάρξει η ανάδειξη ενός προσωρινού προεδρείου, ώστε να προχωρήσουν ομαλά όλες οι διαδικασίες.
