ABC Local Radio is pleased to present a special national broadcast of the 2014 Anzac Day Dawn Service live from Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.

ABC broadcasters of Australian, New Zealand and Turkish decent will present a special broadcast of the 2014 Anzac Day Dawn Service live from Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.

Anchored by ABC Radio broadcaster Richard Stubbs, the national program will commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Richard Stubbs has deep personal and professional interest in the military – his grandfather was a stretcher bearer on the Western Front in WW1 and his father served in the Australian Navy on HMAS Macquarie.

His affinity with the armed services formed at a young age through the conversations had as a child with his grandad and says that talking to vets is like talking to his grandfather.

In a time when vets did not talk much about their wartime experiences Richard’s grandfather told tales of rescue and everyday life. Richard credits his grandfather who he says he inherited his irreverent outlook on life from.

Over the years Richard has interviewed many returned servicemen and women on ABC Radio. He brings a much appreciated (and often commented on) empathy to these personal discussions that allow him to capture the stories and outcomes of service on individuals and their families. He is interested in all aspects of life in service, including a special interest in post traumatic stress disorder.

For the past nine years Richard has played a constant part of 774 Melbourne and ABC Victoria’s Anzac Day coverage. He has produced podcasts and presented the 2013 radio feature ‘Kids of Vets’. He has also represented ABC Radio internationally, when he presented a radio feature on the five year commemoration of the Bali bombing and is a regular MC at the Shrine of remembrance annual dinner.

Richard has a vast knowledge of and strong passion for the personal stories that derive from our military history and the Anzacstory. His personal connection and background makes it all the more meaningful to represent the ABC and to report on the historic Anniversary marking the centenary of the First World War.

Richard will be joined by field reporters: triple j Content Director and former NZ Army Reserve Officer Ollie Wards and producer of Drive on RN and Sunday Night Safran on triple j Serpil Senelmis.
