Την ώρα που η Ολυμπία Βάλανς, ακολουθώντας τη μεγαλύτερη αδελφή της Χόλι αναρριχάται στο σταρ σίστεμ της Αυστραλίας παίζοντας με άνεση σε διπλό ταμπλό (στο μόντελινγκ και στην υποκριτική), η Έλι Αβράμ κάνει επίθεση στο Bollywood, η Αλέξα Ντάβαλος εμφανίζεται στη νέα ταινία για τη Νίνα Σιμόν και η Τρέισι Σπυριδάκος ξεκίνησε από τον Καναδά να κατακτήσει τον κόσμο μέσα από την εμφάνισή της στη σειρά του NBC «Revolution».

Με τον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο της στη σειρά που υπογράφει ο μετρ των μεταφυσικών σίριαλ δράσης Τζέι Τζέι Εϊμπραμς, η Σπαρτιάτισσα στην καταγωγή Τρέισι Σπυριδάκος επαλήθευσε τα σχόλια που την ήθελαν από νωρίς «πολλά υποσχόμενη». Γεννημένη στο Γουίνιπεγκ του Καναδά από Έλληνες μετανάστες, η Τρέισι έζησε από τα τέσσερα χρόνια της στη Σκάλα Λακωνίας, ώσπου όταν ήταν εννέα επέστρεψε με την οικογένειά της στον Καναδά, διατηρώντας πάντως την ελληνική ταυτότητά της απολύτως ενεργή: μιλάει άψογα ελληνικά, δεν χάνει ποτέ την ευκαιρία να τονίσει την καταγωγή της και βρίσκεται στην πρώτη γραμμή όταν οι κοινότητες Ελλήνων μεταναστών την προσκαλούν, όπως έγινε πριν από λίγες ημέρες στο Ελληνικό Φεστιβάλ του Λος Άντζελες. Το 2007, όταν νεαρή και άγνωστη μετακόμισε από την καναδική επαρχία στο πολύβοο Βανκούβερ αποφασισμένη να κάνει καριέρα στην υποκριτική, χρειάστηκε μόλις λίγες εβδομάδες για να κλείσει την πρώτη δουλειά της, έναν μικρό ρόλο στο επιτυχημένο σίριαλ «Supernatural», το οποίο σκηνοθετούσε ο Ερικ Κρίπκε.

ΣΤΑ ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΑ ΠΛΑΤΟ

Η συνεργασία αυτή ήταν μάλλον το «κάρμα» της, αφού ο Κρίπκε είναι από τους δημιουργούς της σειράς «Revolution», η οποία έκανε τη φήμη της πανέμορφης Σπαρτιάτισσας να απογειωθεί. Μέχρι να μπει στο πλατό του «Revolution» (από φέτος προβάλλεται και στην Ελλάδα από το Star) η Τρέισι είχε ήδη πάρει μέρος ή και πρωταγωνιστήσει τόσο σε τηλεοπτικές σειρές όσο και σε κινηματογραφικές ταινίες. Σε μία από αυτές μάλιστα, το «The Boy She Met Online», γνώρισε και τον Joh Cor, με τον οποίο είναι αρραβωνιασμένη από το 2012.

Την ίδια στιγμή που η Τρέισι ζει το όνειρό της στο Λος Άντζελες, η Ελισάβετ Αβραμίδου Granlund (ή Eli Avram όπως είναι γνωστή) ζει το δικό της στην Ινδία. Γεννημένη στη Σουηδία, με πατέρα τον μουσικό Γιάννη Αβραμίδη και μητέρα τη Γαλλίδα ηθοποιό Μaria Granlund (οι δυο τους είναι μέλη του συγκροτήματος Ταξίμι που ταξιδεύει τους ελληνικούς ήχους στη βόρεια Ευρώπη) η Έλη αγάπησε τον ινδικό χορό στα 17 της και όπως φάνηκε, η αδυναμία της αυτή δεν ήταν καθόλου τυχαία. Αν και το πρώτο της βήμα στη showbiz το έκανε στη Στοκχόλμη, όπου πήρε μέρος σε κινηματογραφική παραγωγή, ο στόχος ήταν το Bollywood, γι’ αυτό και το 2012 αποχαιρέτησε τη Σουηδία και έφτασε στην Ινδία με τη βαλίτσα της γεμάτη όνειρα, τα οποία γρήγορα έγιναν πραγματικότητα. Υπογράφοντας αρχικά με ένα πρακτορείο μοντέλων, κατάφερε στη συνέχεια να μπει στην ινδική τηλεόραση και πήρε τον πρώτο πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο της στον κινηματογράφο το 2013, στο φιλμ «Mickey Virus», χωρίς καν να μιλάει τη γλώσσα!

ΣΤΗΝ ΥΠΟΚΡΙΤΙΚΗ

Τώρα πια το Bollywood τη λατρεύει, αναγνωρίζοντάς την ως τη νέα, μεγάλη σταρ του, ενώ η Αυστραλία έχει αρχίσει να ερωτεύεται μια άλλη θεά με ελληνικές ρίζες, την Ολυμπία Βάλανς, με μητέρα Ελληνίδα και πατέρα Σέρβο, η οποία, αφού έκανε καριέρα στο modeling, μπήκε και στο χώρο της υποκριτικής. Η 21χρονη καλλονή είναι εγγονή του Δημήτρη Γώγου, του ιδρυτή της εφημερίδας «Νέος Κόσμος», της μεγαλύτερης σε κυκλοφορία εφημερίδας για Έλληνες της Αυστραλίας, και έρχεται στην Ελλάδα για διακοπές. Ο ρόλος της στην πολυετή σειρά έχει ήδη συζητηθεί πολύ και όχι μόνο στην Αυστραλία, αφού και η Βρετανία ασχολείται μανιωδώς με την Ολυμπία.
Εν τω μεταξύ, ακόμα μία εγγονή γνωστού Έλληνα κάνει άλματα στη showbiz. Η κούκλα Αλέξα Ντάβαλος είναι εγγονή του ηθοποιού Ρίτσαρντ Ντάβαλος, ο οποίος άρχισε την καριέρα του στο Χόλιγουντ τη δεκαετία του ’50 δίπλα στον Τζέιμς Ντιν, στο φιλμ «Ανατολικά της Εδέμ».

Πρωταγωνιστώντας σε μία από τις πιο ακριβές και αισθητικά άψογες νέες σειρές, το γκανγκστερικό νουάρ «Mob City», που προβλήθηκε τη φετινή σεζόν από το δίκτυο TNT, η Αλέξα συνεχίζει την καριέρα της δυναμικά. Γεννημένη στο Παρίσι, με ύψος 1.73 και απίθανα μάτια, η Αλέξα δεν παραλείπει ποτέ να τονίσει την ελληνική καταγωγή της. «Είμαι Ελληνίδα» σημειώνει στην επίσημη ιστοσελίδα της. Έκανε το πρώτο της βήμα στη showbiz όταν ήταν τριών ετών, με τη συμμετοχή της στην τηλεταινία «Riviera», κάτι φυσικό, αφού και η μητέρα της Ελίζα Ντάβαλος είναι ηθοποιός. Μετά την εφηβεία της πέρασε με μεγάλη επιτυχία από το modelling, όπου συνεργάστηκε με κορυφαίους φωτογράφους, όπως ο Peter Lindbergh, ενώ το 2010 το άστρο της έλαμψε στην ταινία «Clash of the Titans», όπου είχε τον ρόλο της Ανδρομέδας.

Ζημιές από την κακοκαιρία που έπληξε τη Μελβούρνη.

Άνοιξαν οι ασκοί του Αιόλου και οι ουρανοί την Τρίτη στη Μελβούρνη. Σφοδροί άνεμοι που έπνεαν με ταχύτητα έως και 120 χιλ. την ώρα και άγριες βροχοπτώσεις έπληξαν πολλά προάστια, αλλά και το κέντρο της πόλης, με αποτέλεσμα να υπερχειλίσει ο ποταμός Yarra, να προκληθούν πολλές ζημιές σε κατοικίες και επιχειρήσεις της πόλης, να τραυματιστούν άνθρωποι, να διακοπεί η παροχή ρεύματος σε 60.000 περίπου κατοικίες και επιχειρήσεις και να διακοπεί η δημόσια συγκοινωνία. Οι άγριες καταιγίδες προκάλεσαν, επίσης, προβλήματα στο αεροδρόμιο της πόλης.

Τις άγριες καταιγίδες συνόδευε και κύμα ψύχους το οποίο και βοήθησε στο να «ασπρίσουν» τα χιονοδρομικά κέντρα της Βικτώριας. Για την ακρίβεια, στο Mt. Buller το χιόνι έφτασε τα 40 εκατ., ενώ στο βουνό Hotham τα 50 εκατ. και ενώ οι χιονοπτώσεις ήταν θεόσταλτο δώρο για τα χιονοδρομικά κέντρα, οι άγριες καταιγίδες στην Μελβούρνη και, ιδιαίτερα, στα παράλια του Yarra στο κέντρο της Μελβούρνης βύθισαν κάμποσα εστιατόρια και καφετέριες, ενώ η υπηρεσία αντιμετώπισης εκτάκτων περιστατικών της πόλης δέχθηκε πάνω από 2,500 εκκλήσεις πολιτών που ζητούσαν βοήθεια.

Όπως ανέφερε η Υπηρεσία Ασθενοφόρων περίπου 100 άνθρωποι τραυματίστηκαν συνολικά με την πλειοψηφία αυτών να βρίσκεται στην επαρχιακή Βικτώρια. Τουλάχιστον τρεις εξ’ αυτών διακομίσθηκαν σε νοσοκομεία της πολιτείας.

Εν τω μεταξύ, χθες το πρωί και ενώ η καταιγίδα είχε κοπάσει περίπου 6,000 κατοικίες και επιχειρήσεις παρέμεναν χωρίς ρεύμα.
Και ενώ οι κάτοικοι της Βικτώριας προσπαθούν να «συνέλθουν» από την κακοκαιρία, η Μετεωρολογική Υπηρεσία ανακοίνωσε ότι έρχεται και άλλη «μπόρα». Σύμφωνα με τις προβλέψεις της, οι χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες θα είναι το κύριο χαρακτηριστικό του καιρού στην Βικτώρια κατά το υπόλοιπο της εβδομάδας καθώς η μέγιστη θερμοκρασία στην πόλη της Μελβούρνης δεν θα ξεπεράσει τους 14 βαθμούς Κελσίου, ενώ νέο κύμα κακοκαιρίας αναμένεται να «χτυπήσει» την Μελβούρνη την Παρασκευή το βράδυ.

Οι περισσότεροι ξένοι που αγοράζουν σπίτια στη Μελβούρνη προέρχονται από την Κίνα και τη Μαλαισία και είναι άτομα που έχουν πολλά χρήματα.

Οι ξένοι αγοραστές ακινήτων ευθύνονται για τη μεγάλη αύξηση στις τιμές των σπιτιών στη Μελβούρνη και στις υπόλοιπες μεγαλουπόλεις της Αυστραλίας.
Κτηματομεσίτες, που γνωρίζουν καλά την αγορά των ακινήτων, πιστεύουν ότι οι ξένοι αγοραστές σπιτιών της Μελβούρνης έχουν αυξήσει τις τιμές κατά 10% εκτοπίζοντας τους ντόπιους αγοραστές που δεν μπορούν να πληρώσουν ανάλογα ποσά για να αγοράσουν ένα σπίτι.

Το πρόβλημα άρχισε να λαμβάνει διαστάσεις τα τελευταία χρόνια και, κυρίως, από τότε που οι αυστραλιανές Αρχές άλλαξαν τη σχετική νομοθεσία, επιτρέποντας σε άτομα που έρχονται στην Αυστραλία με φοιτητικές βίζες για να σπουδάσουν, να αγοράσουν σπίτι για όσα χρόνια παραμείνουν εδώ.

Αναφερόμενος στο θέμα, ο βετεράνος κτηματομεσίτης, David McRae, είπε ότι οι περισσότεροι ξένοι που αγοράζουν σπίτια στη Μελβούρνη προέρχονται από την Κίνα και τη Μαλαισία και είναι άτομα που έχουν πολλά χρήματα.

Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που στις δημοπρασίες των σπιτιών οι ντόπιοι αγοραστές δεν μπορούν να τους ανταγωνιστούν, αφού πληρώνουν όσα κι όσα για να αποκτήσουν το σπίτι που επιλέγουν να αγοράσουν.

Σε ορισμένες δημοπρασίες, πρόσθεσε ο ίδιος, άτομα που συμμετέχουν και ενδιαφέρονται να αγοράσουν σπίτι είναι συνέχεια στο τηλέφωνο με τους γονείς τους ή συγγενείς τους που βρίσκονται στην Κίνα ή τη Μαλαισία προκειμένου να τους κρατούν ενήμερους για το ύψος της τιμής πώλησης και να παίρνουν τη συγκατάθεσή τους.
Τέλος, ο βετεράνος κτηματομεσίτης διαφωνεί με την Αποθεματική Τράπεζα Αυστραλίας που συνεχίζει να ισχυρίζεται ότι δεν υπάρχει πρόβλημα.

While Greece is the worst in the world for job prospects

New OECD data says the ACT is one of the best places to start in Australia, having the highest income bracket and best prospects for jobs.

It scored 10 out of 10 for income, 9.6 for jobs and 9.5 for the environment.

The ACT’s average income is the highest of any of the 300 developed nation regions identified by the OECD wellbeing matching machine at oecdregionalwellbeing.org/

The ACT also had the highest bracket for education, scoring a 9.1 compared to NSW’s 7.2 for education, Victoria 7.4, Western Australia 7, and Queensland 6.9.

Victoria, with the largest number of Greek speakers outside of Athens to its name, was the second best for jobs, scoring a high 8.5.
NSW wasn’t far behind, scoring an 8.3 for jobs, while its income bracket was higher than Victoria’s scoring a 7.1 compared to 6.4.

Greece on the other hand scored a damning 0.9 for jobs in Athens, putting it in the lowest 3 per cent of the developed nations on the list. It was the worst in the category, with Spain coming close to Greece, scoring bellow a 3.9 for jobs.

It also scored quite low in access to services (6.1), health (6.3) and environment (4.3), while its income was extremely low, scoring just 4.7.
The annual disposable income for a Greek is AUD $18,467.

Northern Greece was had the lowest prospects of finding a job, sitting at just 0.6, with income at 3.3 and environment at 1.9. It did have the highest safety rating of the country at 9.7.

World football’s governing body FIFA has acted swiftly to ban rogue Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez for nine international matches and from any football-related activity for four months.

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) willappeal against a four-month global ban imposed against star striker Luis Suarez for biting an Italian opponent at the World Cup.

AUF president Wilmar Valdez called the FIFA punishment against Suarez, also comprising a nine-match international ban, “totally exaggerated”.

He said the appeal would be lodged on Thursday.

“We feel the decision is totally over the top because for us there was no incontrovertible proof to warrant such a tough punishment,” Valdez told reporters in Rio.

“Uruguay does not seek privileges or exceptions. What Uruguay does ask is that the law be applied equally to all and FIFA should ensure that is the case.

“And we have seen more or similarly aggressive incidents than that involving Luis Suarez and yet (in those cases FIFA’s) disciplinary commission did not act as it is now doing,” he complained.

But he added he did not think Suarez was being victimised.

Uruguayan skipper Diego Lugano meanwhile posted a message to social media saying the squad were aghast at the punishment but felt powerless to do anything.

“Indignant. Powerless. I think this is what we all feel,” said Lugano, but “those who are in charge are in charge.

“A hug to Luis, who as always will bounce back.

“We will carry on with humility, solidarity, commitment, recognising our mistakes and with our heads always held high,” said Lugano, who was sat on the bench for the match as he was injured.

Suarez must leave the team’s World Cup hotel, FIFA said, adding that the star would not

be allowed into a stadium during the suspension.

Suarez’s club Liverpool said it would make no immediate decision on the player. But the head of England’s players’ union labelled the FIFA ban as a “massive backward step” for Suarez.

Liverpool’s chief executive, Ian Ayre, said “Liverpool Football Club will wait until we have seen and had time to review the FIFA Disciplinary Committee report before making any further comment.”

FIFA banned Suarez after his bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in Tuesday’s final group match, the suspension ending the controversial forward’s involvement at the World Cup.

It is the third time the 27-year-old South American star had been banned for biting an opponent after a previous case while at Ajax in 2010 and last year playing for Liverpool when he bit the arm of Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

“We felt things had got back on track (following his ban with Liverpool), it was up there for everybody to see, but of course this is a massive backward step on the world stage,” Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of England’s Professional Footballers’ Association, told Sky Sports.

Taylor added FIFA ought to have made “counselling and treatment” a condition of Suarez’s ban.

“I feel FIFA should have led the way with regard to trying to make sure that this behaviour is just eradicated and insist on there being some serious counselling and treatment for Luis Suarez because there’s no doubt he’s one of the finest players in the world,” Taylor said.

“Of course it’s not good when you’ve got somebody of such talent who spoils that talent by such behaviour and that’s why I believe it needs looking at in a serious way and that treatment course needs to be part of any sanction I would suggest.” However, Taylor highlighted how the PFA had already helped players with mental health and anger management problems.

“I would suggest we’ve been successful in about two out of three cases. So the odds would be in favour if that was addressed seriously, but of course Luis needs to accept that and be prepared to undertake that.” Meanwhile Liverpool great John Barnes said he was not shocked by the severity of Suarez’s ban “It is a punishment I expected,” Barnes told the BBC. “From FIFA’s perspective, nine games is a long time in international football.

“Will he (Suarez) do it again? We don’t know but all FIFA can do is enforce the rules of the articles they specify.” Before the start of last season, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who enlisted renowned sports psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters to help at Anfield, made huge efforts to persuade Suarez to stay with the Merseysiders amid talk of a proposed move to Premier League rivals Arsenal or to a Spanish side.

Rodgers was rewarded with a stunning season from Suarez, whose 31 goals in 33 matches made him the Premier League’s top scorer and so nearly saw Liverpool crowned champions of England for the first time in 24 years.

But Barnes said it was uncertain, after this latest incident and amid reports of renewed interest from Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, the club would now be as keen to keep Suarez.

“Will Liverpool say they want to sell him or wait until the ban is over, only they can answer that question.” Depending on the outcome of Uruguay’s appeal, Suarez will miss the first nine games of the Premier League season starting in August, a sequence that includes a clash with champions Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Uruguayan Sports Minister Liliam Kechichian blasted the punishment for Suarez as “disproportionate.” She vowed to discuss the matter with Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, who had already backed the player.

“I have seen many World Cups and many incidents involving hard contact (between players),” said Kechichian.

But “this is the greatest injustice to have resulted” from such a clash said Kechichian.

“This is something which affects the whole of Uruguayan society.” Mujica had Wednesday indicated Suarez had his full support.

“I did not see him bite anybody,” said Mujica, adding that “I was taught that in football what happens is down to the referee,” who did not appear to have seen the incident and therefore did not sanction Suarez.

Uruguayan press and social media users united to express solidarity with Suarez and blast his punishment as overly severe as the team now look to get past Colombia on Saturday without him.

Web users used the hashtag #TodosSomosSuarez (we are all Suarez) to express indignation and blame everybody save for Suarez.

“Indignant at the FIFA resolution. Go Uruguay. We are all Suarez!!”, said Monica Xavier, senator and president of the leftist Frente Amplio grouping while opposition senator Alfredo Solari blamed the English.

“English leaders make me sick — sore losers. They forgot all about fair play.” Pablo Mieres, a candidate for the Independent Party, said the FIFA ban “shows that FIFA always has been biased. Now more than ever we must win!” Nacional club, where Suarez started his playing career, offered him “total support” while journalist Federico Paz tweeted “9 matches … who did Luis kill?”

Australian authorities said Thursday that a 23,000-square-mile area in the southern Indian Ocean had been designated as a new focus zone where searchers will look for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Analysts who helped define the area said in a report the crew was probably deprived of oxygen and unresponsive in the final hours of the flight.

Experts from Boeing and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board were among the specialists who helped define the zone, based on satellite data and analysis of previous similar incidents.

The new zone, about 1,100 miles west of Perth, Australia, is farther south than where previous intensive search efforts were carried out this spring after the plane vanished March 8 with 239 people aboard. The flight was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it went missing.

Eleni Zaroulia, the wife of detained party leader Nikos Michaloliakos is under house arrest.

Golden Dawn MP Eleni Zaroulia, the wife of detained party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, was put under house arrest this week following a disagreement between the two magistrates leading an investigation into GD and a prosecutor overseeing the probe about her fate pending trial on charges of running a criminal organisation.

Zaroulia submitted a written deposition denying all charges. The magistrates, Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou, proposed that she be kept under house arrest until the trial, while prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos, called for her to be remanded in custody.

The Council of Appeals Court Judges is to resolve the dispute. Another GD MP, Constantinos Barbaroussis, was freed on a 20,000-euro bail.

Criminal investigation into Golden Dawn continues.

Magistrates to hear MPs’ testimonies after leader’s objection rebuffed.

The two magistrates leading a criminal investigation into Golden Dawn are set to resume hearing testimonies from MPs of the neofascist party after a judicial council rejected an appeal by detained Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos for them to be dismissed due to alleged bias.

The Council of Appeals Court Judges rejected Michaloliakos’s request, which was based on allegations that the magistrates, Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou, were coercing Stathis Boukouras, a Golden Dawn MP who left the party in March, to testify against Golden Dawn. The council found that the appeal constituted an abusive use of legal tactics aimed at obstructing the investigation.

Unless a new legal complication arises, the magistrates are scheduled to hear the testimony of Eleni Zaroulia, a Golden Dawn lawmaker and Michaloliakos’s wife, and another MP, Constantinos Barbaroussis.

According to sources, Klapa and Dimitropoulou plan to summon the remaining Golden Dawn lawmakers over the coming weeks with the aim of hearing all their testimonies by the end of July. Their goal is for the case against Golden Dawn to go to trial late this year or in early 2015, the sources said.

As the investigation into Golden Dawn’s alleged criminal activities gets under way, a series of photographs surfaced, showing leading party officials performing the Nazi salute in front of flags with swastikas, bolster a wealth of evidence pointing to Golden Dawn members’ Nazi sympathies.

Just over a year ago the then newly-appointed Culture Minister in Greece, Panos Panagiotopoulos, announced with considerable fanfare a new Greek initiative on the Parthenon Sculptures: a strategy based on convening a mediation under the auspices of UNESCO at which the British and Greek authorities would meet to attempt to reach a resolution of this long standing cultural dispute.

Some commentators, including this writer, were sceptical about how the British would react, as mediation requires both sides to enter into negotiations in good faith. Mr Panagiotopoulos was adamant that this was Greece’s official position and sought support for his stance from the various overseas national committees. In due course a formal request for mediation was sent to the British side by the UNESCO Director-General, Ms Irina Bukova, and we waited to see what the British response would be.

In early June 2014, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced a reshuffle of his ministry and one of the casualties was Panagiotopoulos, who was displaced by Konstantinos Tasoulas, a lawyer by training and long-time friend and supporter of the Greek prime minister. The revolving culture ministry door had swung again.

And what of the UNESCO ‘initiative’? As far as this writer is aware neither the British government nor the British Museum has formally replied to the request for mediation, although private correspondence passing from both the government and museum suggests that the British will not seriously entertain mediation. Another year has passed and nothing has happened. So what’s new?

There is a ray of hope on the horizon, however, and it may be in the form of the new Deputy Minister for Culture, Ms Angeliki Gerekou, a PASOK deputy and former actress and architect. An attractive and articulate woman, Ms Gerekou could become the public face of a rejuvenated campaign for the return of the marbles.

In May 2014 I was in Corfu for the 10th International Panionian Conference at which, coincidentally, Ms Gerekou (herself a Corfiot) spoke eloquently at the opening ceremony. During that conference I met with a number of academics and researchers, including Nikos, an employee of the Greek Ministry of Culture. Over coffee at the Libro d’Oro café on the cosmopolitan Liston promenade in Old Corfu Town, our discussion turned to the issue of the marbles. I asked why the Greek campaign has seemingly stalled, if not gone backwards. Nikos’ answer was short and to the point – “we need another Melina” – a reference to the late Melina Mercouri, who as Culture Minister had elevated the profile of the Parthenon Marbles on the world stage and had famously challenged the British Museum to justify its continued retention of the sculptures.

Following the formal handover of the culture ministry, Mr Tasoulas met with Mr Samaras and told the waiting media that culture was the crown jewel, the diamond, the hope of Greece and that the cultural sector can be the flag bearer of the new Greece. For her part, Ms Gerekou promised to do her utmost in promoting Greece’s rich cultural traditions and whilst acknowledging Greece’s classical past, which she described as the country’s foundations, roots and wings, the new Deputy Culture Minister also committed to promoting Greece’s contemporary cultural scene.

The Parthenon Sculptures are the real jewel in the crown as far as the Parthenon is concerned and it is unacceptable that there has been no concerted push against the British government (and its British Museum minders) at any level, including litigation, to bring this issue to a head.
Why not then make Angeliki Gerekou the public face of a renewed campaign to return the marbles, both in terms of sustained diplomatic pressure and through a global public relations campaign?

The outgoing minister, Mr Panagiotopoulos, was unfairly criticised for writing a congratulatory note to the American actor, George Clooney, for his recent and well-publicised support of the return of the sculptures whilst promoting his movie, The Monuments Men, which told the true story of the US special forces at the end of World War II, who recovered 1,000s of stolen works of art and other cultural spoils taken by the Nazis. Leaving aside the fact that Clooney was inspired by his now fiancée, the glamorous UK human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin (it is said that culture is best learned on the pillow), it is fair to say that Clooney’s brave and principled stand – in the face of much British condescension and criticism – did more to promote the cause for return than any single Greek government initiative in recent years.

Prime Minister Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister Venizelos (both former Culture Ministers in previous governments) have publicly backed the campaign for the return of the marbles. However, the request for mediation through UNESCO is simply dead in the water and the Greek government should finally acknowledge that and start moving beyond making interminable motherhood statements that lack any real political or diplomatic backbone.
That’s where Angeliki Gerekou could step up and become the public persona of a cause which still burns strong in many Hellenic hearts. But is the issue of
return really important to this government? Only time will tell.

Επίπληξη για επιλεκτική «αμνησία» αναμένεται να είναι η κριτική της Επιτροπής Κατά της Διαφθοράς Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας ICAC στον ομογενή γερουσιαστή Θανάση Συνοδινό.
Σε προχθεσινό δημοσίευμά της, η εφημερίδα “Daily Telegraph” αναφέρει, ότι ο πρώην βοηθός θησαυροφύλακας δεν θα κατηγορηθεί για «διαφθορά», αλλά η Επιτροπή θα τον επικρίνει «για την απόδοσή του ως διευθυντής της εταιρείας Australia Water Holdings” καθώς και για «την ποιότητα της κατάθεσής του».
Ο πρώην βοηθός θησαυροφύλακας -παραιτήθηκε από τα καθήκοντά του για να καταθέσεις την Έρευνα Κατά της Διαφθοράς – κατέθεσε στις 3 Απριλίου 2014, αλλά η κατάθεσή του είχε κενά διότι, όπως είπε στην Επιτροπή «δεν θυμόταν» κάποια γεγονότα.

Ο κ. Συνοδινός κλήθηκε να καταθέσει ως πρώην Προεδρεύων του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Australia Water Holdings και συγκεκριμένα για την καταγγελία, ότι το 2010 προσελήφθη από την AWH για να εξασφαλίσει δημόσια έργα αξίας ενός δισεκατομμυρίου δολαρίων από την κυβέρνηση της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που κατατέθηκαν στην Επιτροπή, πληρωνόταν 200 χιλ. δολάρια το χρόνο για εργασία 100 ωρών και αν εξασφάλιζε τα έργα θα αμειβόταν από 10 εκ. έως 20 εκ. δολάρια. Ο κ. Συνοδινός διέψευσε κατηγορηματικά τις πληροφορίες.

Ο κ. Συνοδινός αντέκρουσε και τις κατηγορίες, ότι γνώριζε για προσπάθειες μελών του Λίμπεραλ Πάρτι και πρώην Εργατικών υπουργών της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας να εξασφαλίσουν κρατικά έργα κάνοντας δωρεές στο Λίμπεραλ Πάρτι και «λαδώνοντας» παράγοντες των κυβερνήσεων της Πολιτείας.
Ο ομογενής αναμένεται να καταθέσει πάλι στην ICAC, τον Αύγουστο, σχετικά με τις ερανικές δραστηριότητες του Λίμπεραλ Πάρτι Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας, το οποίο υπηρέτησε ως Ταμίας και Πρόεδρος.

Εν τω μεταξύ, η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση ζητά από τον πρωθυπουργό, Tony Abbott, να ανακοινώσει αν ο κ. Συνοδινός θα επανέλθει στην κυβέρνηση. Το σαββατοκύριακο ο θησαυροφύλακας Joe Hockey, δήλωσε ότι ο Θανάσης Συνοδινός θα επανέλθεις την κυβέρνηση ως βοηθός θησαυροφύλακας.
Ο αρχηγός της αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten, ζητά από τον να ανακοινώσει, πότε «θα επιλεγεί βοηθός θησαυροφύλακας». Ο κ. Shorten καλεί τον πρωθυπουργό να εξηγήσεις τον αυστραλιανό λαό το σύστημα χρηματοδότησης του Λίμπεραλ Πάρτι Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας.
