Australia: Interest rates to hold steady, RBA minutes show

skynews_img_1200_745

Australia’s cash rate remained on hold earlier this month at its record low of 2.5 per cent, where it has been since August last year.

At its June meeting, the Reserve Bank of Australia board said it would be prudent to leave rates unchanged, with no indication of any movement in the near future.

“Given this outlook for the economy and the significant degree of monetary stimulus already in place to support economic activity, the board judged that the current accommodative stance of policy was likely to be appropriate for some time yet,” the board said in the minutes of the meeting, released today.

Low interest rates were working to support demand but it was hard to judge whether that would offset the effects of the tough federal budget and expected declines in mining investment, the board said.

“Those uncertainties were likely to take some time to resolve,” it said.

Although March quarter gross domestic product growth was above trend, as the RBA had predicted, this was mainly driven by strong mining exports and was not expected to be sustained.

“The expectation of substantial falls in mining investment, below-average growth of public demand and non-mining investment remaining subdued for a time implied that the pace of growth was likely to be a little below trend over the rest of this year and into the next, before gradually increasing,” the board said.

The central bank repeated its familiar phrase about the Australian dollar, that rises in recent months had diminished the exchange rate’s ability to assist in achieving balanced growth in the economy.

“Members noted that the exchange rate remained high by historical standards, particularly given the further decline in commodity prices over the past month.”

James Troisi has had a strange Socceroos experience.

A LEAGUE UNITED VICTORY

James Troisi’s return to Australia put him back on the Socceroos radar. Photo: AAP/James Elsby.

A couple of years ago, James Troisi was struggling to get noticed by Holger Osieck. Now, the Greek Australian will be playing in his first World Cup, back on the Australian radar thanks to Ange Postecoglou.

James Troisi has had a strange Socceroos experience.

Back in 2011, the 20-year-old was a national team regular when he was making a name for himself at Turkish club Kayserispor, but he fell off Holger Osieck’s radar unexpectedly.

Till now, the half-Greek, half-Italian South Australian has never represented his country in the World Cup, but has nine caps so far for the national team.

When the Socceroos’ coach, Ange Postecoglou, was managing Melbourne Victory, he saw immense potential in Troisi and begged him to play for Victory on loan from his club Atlanta. For Troisi, it soon became a no-brainer, when he realised he was finally being recognised for his solid performances.

A turn of fate then had Postecoglou leaving his post for Victory and taking on the even bigger role of Socceroos coach, putting the goalscoring Troisi back on the international radar.

“As a player it is a privilege to play for your national team and I don’t take that for granted,” Troisi said when he was called up for the World Cup.

“If you’re not playing regularly at your club, then I understand you shouldn’t be getting called up for your national team, so first and foremost for me it has always been about my club football and if I’m doing well there then hopefully I’m getting the call.

Troisi had a record breaking season at Victory, playing 35 games and scoring 15 goals for the side. He soon became a fan favourite and was grabbing headlines with fellow Greek, Kostas Barbarouses, for their record number of goals.

Troisi was named the Players’ Player of the Year at Melbourne Victory, showing just what an impression he made on the team, something he wasn’t able to do in his earlier Socceroos days.

“I was pretty disappointed with the previous two coaches because I was playing some good football in some good leagues and not getting acknowledged, really, for whatever reason,” he says.

“But hopefully I’ve turned the page and at the moment it seems to be working out pretty well for me.”

His inclusion in the World Cup squad shows Postecoglou’s belief in giving young malleable players the ability to shine.

In his preliminary squad of 27, nine players were from the A-League, with many getting their first ever caps in the selection.

Troisi believes the Postecoglou philosophy will see the Australian team qualify for many World Cups to come.

“It’s a new era and it’s time for players like myself and younger players coming through to step up and show the ability that we have,” Troisi says.

There’s no secret that Troisi’s inclusion on the World Cup squad will do wonders for his international career.

The A-League might have been a risky decision for Troisi, but it paid dividends for him. Without switching to Melbourne Victory, Troisi would have never made it into the Socceroos squad.

The South Australian will be showing the world his talent, against some of the best players in the world. He featured in Australia’s first match against Chile when he was called on in the second half.

Greek fans cheer the fourth loudest

fans

Two teams, one heart for Greek Australian football fans.

The biggest fan-base in Australia is for England, while Italy and Germany take second and third spots.

Greek Australian fans will be making up a huge cheering squad outside of Greece, showing that we do in fact have two teams, but one heart.

Greek Australian fans represent the fourth biggest fan base in Australia population wise out of the 32 countries in the World Cup.

About 99,900 Greek Australians will be waking up at ungodly hours of the night to see their national team battle for glory.

The biggest fanbase is for England, with almost a million fans in Australia. The Italian fan base takes second place, while Germany, a football powerhouse, takes third.

The rankings, published by the Daily Telegraph, were compiled using census statistics collated in the Football Federation of Australia’s media guide to the tournament.

The smallest fan base was for Cameroon, with Costa Rica and Ivory Coast not far behind.

Australia: Family violence confronted

domestic%20violence

Community and state fight back, while funding gap remains for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups

Throughout Australia, numerous men’s behaviour change programs work to help change men’s attempts to dominate and control women, that more often than not turn into domestic violence.

Rodney Vlais, acting CEO of No To Violence (NTV), Victoria’s peak body for male family violence preventions, is honest – behaviour change programs don’t work any magic. For some men it will work – they will start taking responsibility, stop minimising and denying it and stop blaming their partner for their violence. Other men pose a high level of risk.

“Not all men change. It is very important for partners to know that – the fact that he is into the program doesn’t mean he is going to change automatically.”
However, once involved in the program – voluntarily or by court order, it is easier to keep track of their behaviour.

The majority of family violence that occurs in heterosexual relationships is perpetrated by men – approximately 85-95 per cent. With other forms of family violence, like adolescents’ violence towards their parents, gender division is not as clear – about two thirds is perpetrated by boys and one third by girls.
What lies underneath men’s violence against women and family violence is men’s attitude towards women,

their sense of entitlement to respond to particular situation in a way that harm other, Mr Vlais explains.

“A man may develop some inappropriate and unreasonable expectations from his female partner, like that she shouldn’t be talking to other men. These expectations are based on his believes that she is responsible for how he feels, that she shouldn’t be making him jealous or angry rather than him taking responsibility for his own emotions. In his own mind, this sets him up to think that he is the victim and that she should be punished or controlled in order for her to behave differently, and subsequently to stop him from feeling in that particular way,” Mr Vlais tells Neos Kosmos.

“It is the context of privilege in that sense of sexism and negative attitude towards women that underlies men’s choices to use violence.”

With new Greek migrant families settling in Australia, Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) Case worker officer, Dimitra Lagoudaki says the cases of domestic violence AGWS deals with have increased.

“We have many cases, both from elderly women from our community being victims of domestic violence, but also a lot of cases from newcomers from Greece.
“In the case of elderly members of our community experiencing domestic violence, the problem was always there. But once children grow up and leave the house, they retire, the couple is all day in the house together, and these problems appear more intensely.

“They just don’t want to go through it anymore, and often refer to grown up children as one less reason to sacrifice,” Ms Lagoudaki says.
With community and mainstream education, awareness about domestic violence has increased among the community elderly.

“People know what domestic violence is and they know they shouldn’t accept this kind of behaviour from their partner, they feel more comfortable to talk about it and ask for assistance, while in the past they were more isolated, worried about how the community is going to take it. Even now, they often won’t take the last step – they won’t go to the court, or they may go but will often change their decision and will refuse to go further, in belief that the situation might change.”

With majority of new Greek migrants being young families, Ms Lagoudaki says it is with the settlement issues and new challenges these couples face that domestic violence surfaces.
“A lot of them are new couples, they don’t really now each other that well. It’s new marriages and with all the problems they face when they come here, isolated and without family support they had in their homeland – violent behaviour comes to surface.

“There are also a lot of dysfunctional families that often see migration as the way to improve their lives – but once here, the problems don’t just go away.”
InTouch, the Multicultural Centre against Family Violence, is a statewide service which provides programs and responses to issues of family violence in CALD (Culturally And Linguistically Diverse) communities.

Maya Avdibegovic, CEO of InTouch, says that across CALD communities domestic violence has been under-reported. This may occur due to poor data collection or due to CALD women being disadvantaged in accessing justice and support system.

Ms Avdibegovic is confident that bilingual and bicultural programs have better outcome for victims of domestic violence from CALD communities.
“Within our family violence support program, a team of 12 bilingual bicultural workers, most of them migrants and refugees, that speak more than 25 different languages, offer support to victims. One of the most vulnerable groups that we work with is women without permanent residency.
“We also work with men through men behaviour program. There is an absolute gap in the system in terms of providing those programs to CALD men who can’t speak English,” she tells Neos Kosmos.
In terms of demand of population and demographic, there is a huge disproportion, Ms Avdibegovic says.

“There is a huge disproportion in the funding available to CALD communities. If you think about it, the CALD population is huge in Victoria – more than 25 per cent of the first generation, and if you take into account the second generation – it’s almost 50 per cent.

“In terms of family violence services we have only one specialist service that obviously can’t meet the demand of all the women who need help. Our family violence support program has funding to support 700 women a year – in the last financial year we had 972 women coming though that program.

“Yes, some of them can easily go to mainstream services and be supported appropriately. But there are a lot of them who will face a lot of barriers in accessing main stream services, in terms of language, cultural understanding, discrimination.”

In the last financial year, 2012-2013, statistics for Victoria show that police attended approximately 60,000 of domestic violence cases, an increase from the previous year which saw about 50,000 cases and the year before – 38,000 cases.

NTV’s Project Manager says domestic violence is often misconstrued as physical violence only.

“Often it’s something that originates with men’s privilege, small signs, things that people don’t necessarily pick up as violence, like financial control. It can be various types that often get disregarded and underestimated.

Recent announcement from the Victoria government that an additional $30 million over four years will be allocated to protect women and children victims of family violence was welcomed across domestic violence prevention and support organisations.

However, Mr Vlais says over $7 million per year is an important first step in fixing urgent gaps in the family violence service system, but still not enough in terms of what’s required to address the problem. More significantly, a statewide Government approach is crucial in keeping women and children safe.
“We find that, in Victoria at least, we don’t get the same response from some other ministerial portfolios like Justice, and we need much more of a whole Government approach rather than responsibilities being left with the ministry for Community Services.

“We also look forward to hearing from the Attorney General about how this funding can assist the role of justice-focused government agencies to tighten the net around men who cause harm to their families,” Mr Vlais says.

Australia: Boutaris to visit Melbourne

Boutaris

Yiannis Boutaris, mayor of Thessaloniki.

The recently re-elected mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, speaking on the Greek program of SBS radio, confirmed that he will visit Melbourne in November in order to celebrate with the Greek Australian community the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Melbourne and Thessaloniki.

Yiannis Boutaris, the 72-year-old mayor of Greece’s second largest city, is a Greek businessman-winemaker – and environmentalist – who was elected mayor in 2010 running as a progressive independent. In 2012 he was chosen as ‘the best mayor of the world’ for the month of October, by the City Mayors Foundation, an organisation based in the United Kingdom.

Speaking on SBS radio, Yiannis Boutaris cited as his successes in his first term as mayor of Thessaloniki the financial management of the city, the improvement in waste collection including recycling, and the public recognition of many unrecognised until recently aspects of the history and the culture of his city.

Amongst others he stated that by acknowledging the Jewish and Muslim past of city’s history, Thessaloniki was able to welcome in 2013 approximately 200,000 tourist from Turkey and Israel.

The mayor of Thessaloniki stressed that his main priority in his second term will be to fight unemployment, by using European funds and by encouraging and supporting startup companies and new entrepreneurship.

The mayor of Thessaloniki will participate in November in the 30th anniversary celebration of the sister city relationship between Melbourne and Thessaloniki.

Australia: Nine Greeks honoured by Queen

greeks honoured

Sergeant Jim Bellos adds OAM to his list of awards. Photo: Queensland Police.

A cardiothoracic surgeon, a rugby player and a shoe designer named in the Queen’s Birthday Awards.

Nine Greek Australians from all walks of life have been honoured in the Queen’s birthday awards.

Former Queensland speaker Jim Fouras, rugby powerhouse Nicholas Politis, cardiothoracic surgeon James Tatoulis and architect Alexander (Alec) Tzannes were all awarded as Members of the Order of Australia and will now have AM after their names.

Cardiothoracic surgeon and professor James Tatoulis was taken aback by the honour and says it was his best ever Queen’s birthday weekend.
“I’m very proud and chuffed I must say, and Monday was a very exciting day in the Tatoulis household,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

After 20 years as a surgeon, Professor Tatoulis has become the leading specialist for anything heart related and has headed the cardiothoracic surgery unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital since 1997. The people he treats might be different everyday, but one patient he won’t forget easily was his old Greek school teacher.

“Even though I was a reasonably good scholar at my regular school, I certainly did not enjoy Greek school, the usual thing was a twist of the ear and a slap across the face,” he remembers.

“I did get a slight bit of revenge because I ended up performing a heart operation on one of my Greek school teachers, later on.”
Joining the group of honours is Sergeant Jim Bellos, who was awarded with the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), another prize to add to his growing trophy cabinet.

He received the Australian Police Medal on Australia Day this year and was shortlisted for the Australian of the Year in 2013.
With so many awards in such a short time, it must be getting hard to properly display the lot.

“I don’t want to leave my awards at the police station because I’m modest, so all my awards, medals, trophies are now at my mum’s house in my old room,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

His mother -arguably his biggest fan – must be ecstatic to have the newest award in the collection.

Sergeant Bellos isn’t just about keeping the peace, he’s about fostering a good future for the very multicultural region he looks after. Asking him what he’s working on currently is a tough question.

In the next week, he’s organising a huge World Refugee Day sporting tournament. The event, started by Sergeant Bellos in 2008, is now hosted in 40 different countries and includes a wide variety of sport.

“This year we’ve actually got a tournament of a sport called kabaddi (a wrestling sport), which is like an Indian tiggy,” he says.

Also in the OAM list is dermatologist professor Katherine Evelyn Georgouras and footwear manufacturer John Karandonis.

Mr Karandonis started out in the late ’60s with his El Greco and Karandonis brand, eventually becoming known for his signature classic and high quality designs worldwide. He was asked by several European signature brands to manufacture men’s shoes for them under licence in Australia during the 1970s and 1980s.

Singled out for his service to the Greek community of Western Australia was Petros Vlachou.

Now an OAM, Mr Vlachou has been the trustee of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia since 2012 and has been a vital cog in the Greek Australian business community.

Former president of the Greek Australian Professional and Business Association of Western Australia and a HACCI award winner, he has contributed a great deal to the community.

Finishing the group is Christos Moraitis, who was awarded a public service medal for his work to Australia’s international affairs as Australia’s High Commissioner to Port Moresby and in senior legal and corporate roles at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

As the senior legal adviser to Australia’s head of mission in Port Moresby and head of the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Corporate Management Division, Mr Moriatis has been integral in some of Australia’s biggest political decisions.

He has developed some of Australia’s international legal relationships with a wide range of other countries.

The Queens Birthday honours are awarded to “recognise, celebrate and say thank you to those who make a difference, those who achieve their best and those who serve others”.
