Μια ελληνική ταινία Ελληνοαυστραλιανής παραγωγής αναφέρεται στην Ελλάδα του σήμερα και στις ελπίδες του αύριο.

Μία ταινία μικρού μήκους ελληνοαυστραλιανής παραγωγής και σκηνοθετημένη από τον καταξιωμένο σε Ελλάδα και εξωτερικό Πατρινό σκηνοθέτη, Παναγιώτη Φαφούτη, προβάλλεται απόψε Πέμπτη στο Φεστιβάλ “Windows On Europe” στο Σίδνεϊ στο πλαίσιο ενός διεθνούς φεστιβάλ ταινιών στο Σίδνεϊ.

Ο Παναγιώτης Φαφούτης ολοκλήρωσε πριν από μερικούς μήνες την 15η σκηνοθετική του δουλειά, την εννιάλεπτης διάρκειας ταινία “Ιωάννα/Joanna”. Η ταινία είναι ένας αστικός μύθος για την γενέτειρά του, την Πάτρα και ένα μεταφορικό σχόλιο της τωρινής κατάστασης στην Ελλάδα. “Είναι μια ταινία που αφορά την απώλεια και την ελπίδα” είπε στον “Νέο Κόσμο” ο σκηνοθέτης. “Ήταν μια πραγματική γυναίκα που περίμενε όλη της τη ζωή τον αρραβωνιαστικό της. Η «Ιωάννα» κατεβαίνει κάθε μέρα στο λιμάνι για να βρει την αγάπη. Η ίδια συμβολίζει την ίδια την Ελλάδα, η οποία περιμένει τον σωτήρα της να έρθει από το εξωτερικό” είπε ο κ. Φαφούτης στον “Ν.Κ.”.

Ο σκηνοθέτης πιστεύει ότι “τα λιμάνια είναι ένα μέρος όπου υπάρχει ελπίδα, απ’ όπου μπορείς να φύγεις για κάτι καλύτερο, αλλά και να επιστρέψεις από κάπου χειρότερα” είπε στον “Ν.Κ.”.

Το καθημερινό του ρητό είναι ” Δεν θα νικηθούμε, θα νικήσουμε”. Εμείς οι Έλληνες λέμε το εξής: “Η ελπίδα πεθαίνει τελευταία, και είναι σαν να λέμε ότι υπάρχει πάντα ελπίδα”.

Ο Έλληνας σκηνοθέτης πιστεύει ότι ο πολιτισμός είναι απαραίτητος και αποτελεί τον τελευταίο ίχνος ελπίδας. “Αν ένα άτομο είναι πολιτιστικά καλά καταρτισμένο, αυτό αντικατοπτρίζεται αμέσως στο άτομο αυτό, γίνεται εμφανές. Αλλά, δυστυχώς στην Ελλάδα σήμερα οι άνθρωποι γίνονται φτωχότεροι και πνευματικά και συναισθηματικά…”.

Ο Παναγιώτης Φαφούτης γεννήθηκε στην Πάτρα. Σπούδασε στην Αθήνα Νομική και Σκηνοθεσία στη Σχολή Σταυράκου. Δουλεύει ως σκηνοθέτης, σεναριογράφος, παραγωγός. Έχει σκηνοθετήσει δύο μεγάλου μήκους και επτά μικρού μήκους ταινίες που έχουν βραβευθεί. Επίσης έχει σκηνοθετήσει ντοκιμαντέρ, τηλεοπτικές σειρές, διαφημιστικά και θεατρικά έργα. Διδάσκει σκηνοθεσία σε κινηματογραφικές και δραματικές σχολές. Η πρώτη του επαφή με την μεγάλου μήκους ταινία, το επίσημο σκηνοθετικό του ντεμπούτο, έγινε το 2009 με την ταινία “Η Κληρονόμος”.

H “Ιωάννα” είναι γυρισμένη στην ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα του σκηνοθέτη την Πάτρα, που όπως λέει ο ίδιος αποτελεί “τη δυτική πύλη της Ελλάδα στην Ευρώπη”. Χρειάστηκαν τρεις ημέρες για να ολοκληρωθεί το γύρισμα. Το σενάριο είναι του ιδίου και οι ηθοποιοί που παίζουν είναι η Υβόννη Μαλτέζου, ο Στέλιος Σοφός και Ηρακλής Τζαβέλας. H παραγωγή έγινε από την εταιρεία του κ. Φαφούτη “Guanaco”, την “Oxymoron” και την ελληνοαυστραλιανή εταιρία παραγωγής “Aussie Ficino” της Τίας Σπανού και του Αντώνη Τσώνη, που εδρεύει στη Μελβούρνη.

Η ταινία ταξίδεψε στην Ιταλία κερδίζοντας το βραβείο καλύτερης ερμηνείας στο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Capalbio. Στην Ελλάδα κέρδισε το βραβείο καλύτερης μουσικής και ήχου στο Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Δράμας. Προβλήθηκε στις 21ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου της Αθήνας, (“Νύχτες Πρεμιέρας”), στο Φεστιβάλ Νάουσας και στα φεστιβάλ Brest European Short Film Festival, 17emes Rencontres des Cinémas d’ Europe (La Maison de l’Image), Sedicicorto Int’l FFest Forli και Nordkapp FFest.

Το Φεστιβάλ “Windows on Europe” οργανώνεται για δέκατη συνεχή φορά ως μέρος του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού μήκους Flickerfest. Ταυτόχρονα θα προβληθούν 17 ταινίες μικρού μήκους από το Βέλγιο, την Κροατία, την Τσεχία, την Δανία, την Εσθονία, την Φινλανδία, την Γαλλία, την Γερμανία, την Ουγγαρία, την Ιταλία, την Ιρλανδία, την Ολλανδία, την Ισπανία, την Πορτογαλία και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Το φεστιβάλ γίνεται με την συνεργασία της Αντιπροσωπείας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης στην Αυστραλία. European Union Delegation in Australia.

Στα $400την εβδομάδα έφτασε η μέση τιμή ενοικίου για μονοκατοικίες.

Οι τιμές των ενοικίων στη Μελβούρνη έχουν φτάσει στα ύψη και πολλές οικογένειες αντιμετωπίζουν σοβαρά οικονομικά προβλήματα καθώς αναγκάζονται να στερηθούν σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις ακόμα και τα βασικά ακόμα, για να εξασφαλίσουν στέγη γι’ αυτούς και τα παιδιά τους.

Σύμφωνα με πρόσφατα στοιχεία του οίκου Domain, η μέση τιμή ενοικίου για μονοκατοικίες -που ως επί το πλείστον προτιμούν οι οικογένειες- έφτασε τα $400 κατά το τελευταίο τρίμηνο του 2015. Όσον αφορά την μέση τιμή ενοικίου διαμερισμάτων αυτή κατά την ίδια περίοδο παρέμεινε στα $370 την εβδομάδα.

Στη ραγδαία αύξηση των τιμών ενοικίων συνέβαλε και η έλλειψη διαθέσιμων προς ενοικίαση ακινήτων, γεγονός που όπως αναφέρουν πολλοί κτηματομεσίτες σημαίνει ότι πολλοί ενοικιαστές αναγκάζονται να υποβάλλουν έως και έξι αιτήσεις πριν καταφέρουν να ενοικιάσουν κάποιο σπίτι.

Η εγκατάσταση όλο και περισσότερων μεταναστών στη Μελβούρνη σε συνάρτηση με τη δημιουργία νέων θέσεων εργασίας στην πόλη τα τελευταία χρόνια συνέβαλε στην αύξηση της ζήτησης αλλά αυτή η αύξηση δεν είναι δυσανάλογη του αριθμού των νέων καταλυμάτων που κατασκευάζονται στην πόλη.

Τα στοιχεία της Domain αποκαλύπτουν επίσης ότι τα ανατολικά προάστια και κεντρικά προάστια της πόλης είναι αυτά που γνώρισαν και τη μεγαλύτερη αύξηση στις τιμές των ενοικίων. Η μέση τιμή ενοικίου που πρέπει να πληρώσει μία οικογένεια αν θέλει να κατοικήσει σε μονοκατοικία στα ανατολικά προάστια είναι $548 την εβδομάδα ενώ η ανάλογη τιμή για τα κεντρικά προάστια της πόλης κυμαίνεται στα $600 την εβδομάδα.

Αξίζει, εντούτοις, να αναφερθεί ότι η αγορά ενοικίων στη Μελβούρνη μπορεί να είναι ακριβή αλλά δεν είναι η ακριβότερη της Αυστραλίας. Την πρώτη θέση στον κατάλογο του οίκου Domain, με την μέση τιμή ενοικίου για μονοκατοικίες στις μεγαλουπόλεις της χώρας να καταλαμβάνει το Darwin όπου η μέση τιμή είναι $570 την εβδομάδα, τη δεύτερη θέση το Σίδνεϊ όπου η μέση τιμή είναι $530 την εβδομάδα, την τρίτη η Καμπέρα με μέση τιμή $430, την τέταρτη θέση το Perth με μέση τιμή $410 ενώ μετά την τέταρτη θέση που καταλαμβάνουν η Μελβούρνη και το Brisbane, ακολουθούν η Αδελαΐδα με μέση τιμή στα $355 και το Hobart με μέση τιμή τα $340.

Πριν γίνει άνθρωπος των… σπηλαίων ήταν επικεφαλής μιας επιτυχημένης εταιρείας προσλήψεων στην Αυστραλία

Η πίεση της καθημερινότητας έχει κάνει πολλούς να σκεφτούν να πάρουν τα βουνά και να αφεθούν στη γαλήνη της φύσης, μακριά από τον θόρυβο και το άγχος.

Ο Άνγκελο Μαστροπιέτρο αποφάσισε να το κάνει και να μετατρέψει μια σπηλιά 250 εκατ. χρόνων σε ένα άνετο σπίτι, που θα το ζήλευε ο καθένας.

Μετά από 1.000 ώρες εργασίας και 285.000 δολάρια, ο 38χρονος έπιασε τα φτυάρια και τις αξίνες για να δημιουργήσει αυτό που ονειρευόταν.

Πριν γίνει άνθρωπος των… σπηλαίων ήταν επικεφαλής μιας επιτυχημένης εταιρείας προσλήψεων στην Αυστραλία, όπου έζησε για μια δεκαετία, όταν και διαγνώστηκε με σκλήρυνση κατά πλάκας, που τον άφησε προσωρινά παράλυτο.

«Ήθελα να είμαι σε ένα μέρος, που θα είχα μια πιο ευτυχισμένη και υγιέστερη ζωή» ανέφερε.

Η πρώτη φορά που είδε τη σπηλιά ήταν το 1999, όταν και βρήκε καταφύγιο κατά τη διάρκεια βροχής. Για 300 χρόνια χρησιμοποιούνταν ως κατοικία με 4 υπνοδωμάτια, αλλά εγκαταλείφθηκε το 1940.

Ο πατέρας δύο παιδιών είδε το ακίνητο δέκα χρόνια μετά από εκείνη τη βροχή και αποφάσισε να κάνει το μεγάλο βήμα. Αγόρασε το σπήλαιο για 110.000 δολάρια και εργάστηκε μόνος του για να το διαμορφώσει.

Ως επί το πλείστον χρησιμοποίησε υλικά συμβατά με την πέτρα της σπηλιάς, όπως ξύλο και βότσαλα. Το σπίτι είναι απλά μοναδικό με τις λεπτομέρειες να κάνουν τη διαφορά. Το εσωτερικό κινείται στις αποχρώσεις του λευκού και του καφέ, με την μπανιέρα και τη γωνιά με τα βότσαλα στον τοίχο να ξεχωρίζουν. Η σπηλιά του Άνγκελο δεν εχει να ζηλέψει τίποτα από ένα διαμέρισμα σε πόλη, καθώς έχει από θέρμανση δαπέδου μέχρι Wi-Fi.

Χάθηκαν μόλις 1.000 θέσεις εργασίας

Σταθερό στο 5,8% παρέμεινε το ποσοστό ανεργίας και τον Δεκέμβριο σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Αυστραλιανής Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας, τα οποία αποκαλύπτουν επίσης ότι κατά το συγκεκριμένο μήνα δημιουργήθηκαν 17.600 νέες θέσεις ολικής απασχόλησης (full time), ενώ χάθηκαν 18.500 θέσεις μερικής απασχόλησης (part time).

Ένα άλλο στοιχείο που προκύπτει από τη μηνιαία έκθεση της Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας είναι η μείωση του ποσοστού ανεργίας των νέων ηλικίας 15-24 ετών, το οποίο τον Νοέμβριο κυμαινόταν στο 12,6% ενώ τον Δεκέμβριο μειώθηκε στο 12,1%.

Στην ανακοίνωση της Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας υπάρχει και η επισήμανση ότι κατά το ημερολογιακό έτος 2015 η ανεργία μειώθηκε από 6,2% σε 5,8%. Από τον Δεκέμβριο του 2014 έως τον Δεκέμβριο του 2015, περίπου 312.000 άτομα εισήλθαν στο εργατικό δυναμικό της χώρας όπως χαρακτηριστικά ανέφερε ο κ. Bruce Hockman, γενικός διευθυντής του τμήματος Μακροοικονομικών Μελετών της Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας.

Μείωση σημείωσε και το ποσοστό συμμετοχής των ατόμων εργάσιμης ηλικίας στην εργασιακή αγορά της χώρας το οποίο από 65,3% έπεσε στο 65,1%.

Ο συγκεκριμένος δείκτης μετρά τον αριθμό των εργαζομένων της χώρας σε συνδυασμό με αυτούς που ψάχνουν για δουλειά.

Ο αριθμός ωρών εργασίας κατά τον ίδιο μήνα αυξήθηκε οριακά κατά 0,3 εκατ. ώρες διαμορφώνοντας το συνολικό αριθμό ωρών στις 1,645 δις ώρες.

Πολλοί οικονομικοί αναλυτές προέβλεπαν την αύξηση του ποσοστού ανεργίας το 2015 αλλά όπως χαρακτηριστικά είπε ο επικεφαλής οικονομολόγος της CommSec, κ. Craig James, υποτίμησαν τη δυναμική που δημιούργησε στην οικονομία της χώρας η αύξηση της ζήτησης στον τομέα παροχής υπηρεσιών. Ο κ. James είπε χαρακτηριστικά ότι η καταναλωτική κίνηση στον συγκεκριμένο τομέα αυξήθηκε, γεγονός που το απέδωσε στις αυξήσεις στις τιμές των ακινήτων. «Η αισιοδοξία των καταναλωτών είναι εμφανής» είπε ο κ. James.

O κ. James πρόσθεσε επίσης ότι, η γήρανση του πληθυσμού της χώρας θα συνεχίσει να δημιουργεί νέες θέσεις εργασίας στον τομέα της Υγείας, ενώ επισήμανε και την αύξηση της τουριστικής κίνησης στην Αυστραλία, αναφέροντας χαρακτηριστικά ότι κατά το 2015, ο αριθμός των ξένων τουριστών που επισκέφθηκαν την Αυστραλία ήταν αυξημένος κατά μισό εκατομμύριο.

‘The country has been breeding bludgers,’ says Con Makris

He may have built a property empire worth more than $1 billion dollars, but Con Makris still remains a regular, hard-working man who doesn’t forget his origins. In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, the billionaire expressed his distrust towards the share market, his disappointment in a large part of Australian youth, that he describes as “bludgers”, his agreement with Malcolm Turnbull’s views, while offering advice to prospective investors – which can be summed up in one phrase: work hard and stay away from “paper money”.

The first Greek migrant to reach billionaire status in Australia, Con Makris expressed his sadness over the plight of Greek people, suffering from the ongoing financial crisis, predicting a long, painful road to recovery.

“Greece is a magnificent place that needs a good, strong government,” he said, stating that focus on infrastructure and tourism is crucial for the country’s return to growth.

Placed at No. 47 on the Business Review Weekly Rich 200 list, Makris – who arrived in Australia from Greece when he was 16 years old – built his wealth from very modest beginnings, running barbecue chicken shops. Early in his business career he developed a strong work ethic from which he has never deviated. He started off working seven days a week for up to 14 hours a day, expanding his business to property development and shopping centre ownership. Since his phenomenal rise in the 1980s, mostly in South Australia and Queensland, he has remained a firm believer in the fundamentals of investing in bricks and mortar in the right locations, and picking trends that will ensure the values of those commercial properties and shopping centres continue to rise.

‘NOBODY LOSES ON LAND’

As for his well-documented aversion to the share market, it is due to the volatile nature of shares. To him, the increasingly complex world of derivatives, hedge fund trading and short selling exacerbates the extreme fluctuations and can mean that vast amounts of share market wealth on paper can go up in smoke in a short space of time.

“I never follow paper money”, he told the Australian Financial Review, adding: “Why buy shares? It’s crazy. Nobody loses on land.” An advocate of the security of bricks and mortar, Makris insists that location is still the single biggest factor that will add value over the long term, as it has been doing for the past five decades. According to him, this principle will survive even as the Australian economy continues to strive for the next couple of years.
Asked to comment on the increases in interest rates, he told the AFR that there will inevitably be some fall-out among those who’ve borrowed too heavily to fund projects, but most business people and property owners enter transactions with long-term horizons.

“The whole world is working on the basis that there won’t be inflation but things can change quickly,” he said.

The richest man in South Australia also expressed his support for Malcolm Turnbull, who “is a businessman and he understands what needs to happen to get things moving”. The prime minister’s call for innovation is seen by the billionaire as a move towards building an entrepreneurial culture in Australia.
However any effort to rebuild confidence after the decline of the mining industry is bound to meet a very specific obstacle: young Australians, who have lost their work ethic, nurtured by the state to being used to a “hand-out mentality”.

“The country has been breeding bludgers,” he says bluntly. “Too many people are looking for a lifestyle. They want to go to Byron Bay and those sort of places and sit in the sun all day.”

INVESTING IN NORTH ADELAIDE

Despite being South Australia’s richest man, Makris won’t rest on his laurels. He is about to start work on a $200 million development which will include a 160-room Sheraton hotel along with residential apartments, retail space and offices.
It’s all located on a prominent site in affluent North Adelaide which has been vacant since 1989. The billionaire believes that the suburb’s time has finally arrived and describes North Adelaide as the equivalent of Toorak in Melbourne, and similar to Woollahra in Sydney. It is a suburb just one kilometre from the central business district, but the catalyst for the development has been the $535 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval, which now hosts Australian Football League matches for the first time since 1974, and was the location for the first day/night cricket test with the infamous pink ball in late November when Australia played New Zealand.

The oval is within walking distance of the new $200 million Sheraton development, with regular AFL crowds of 50,000 spilling into the nearby suburbs and the CBD, where dozens of new small bars have opened up as the state government relaxed liquor licensing laws.
Makris is a firm supporter of such pro-business measures and points out a policy applied by South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis. He brought forward the first tranche of stamp duty cuts on commercial properties in early December, 2015 with immediate effect, switching from an original plan where those stamp duties would be shaved by one-third in mid-2016, with the next third sliced in mid-2017 followed by full abolishment in mid-2018.
“I think it’s a very smart move,” Makris told the AFR.

Members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne are voting on Sunday at Alphington Grammar

It’s election time for the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV), as its members are called to vote for the new board of management tomorrow.
The elections were called by the Electoral Committee, consisting of Kostas Spyridis (chairman), Sakis Zafiropoulos (secretary), Harris Zaverdinos, Cathy Alexopoulos, Dimitris Grivokostopoulos, Anthea Giannakopoulos, Christos Papadopoulos, Anastasios Kalamovrakas and Peter Horn. The EC was appointed at the Community’s annual general meeting in December, which saw the need for an election to be held, with the date set for Sunday 17 January.
The ballots will be open for all current financial members of the GOCMV, provided they have been enrolled for at least six months prior to the date of the election. Voting will take place at the multipurpose hall ‘Andrianakos Centre’ of the Alphington Grammar School (Old Heidelberg Rd, Alphington), from 10.00 am to 6.00 p.m.

For some time it seemed that an election would not be necessary, as the number of candidates matched the number of board members. However, a 20th candidate came forward, setting in place the course of action provided in the organisation’s statute.

According to the announcement of the Electoral Committee, the 20 candidates for the new board are: Phillip Vassiliadis, Leonidas Vlahakis, Angela Georgalis, Vasso Zangalis, Tammy Iliou, Voula (Stavroula) Kallianis, Michael Karamitos, George Koletsis, Nick Koukouvitakis, Alexis Costa, Theo Markos, Costas Markos, Jim Bosinakis, Nick Dallas, Spiros Papadopoulos, Bill Papastergiadis, Nick Parthimos, Marinis Pirpiris, Christos Sikavitsas and Constantinos Tsakoumis.

All but five are current board members – among them, current president Bill Papastergiadis.

With the exception of the newest candidate, 19 out of the 20 candidates are affiliated with the current president.

“One of the hallmarks achieved by the current board is that we are unified,” Bill Papastergiadis has told Neos Kosmos.

“There have been no internal rivalries; instead, we remain focused on the project that we have undertaken. I’ve been surrounded by talented people from a broad political spectrum; we have people from the far left to the right, working together.”

The task of an ‘opposition’ party falls to the 20th candidate, Constantinos Tsakoumis. His candidacy sparked debate among the members of the GOCMV, as many tried to dissuade him, stating that the cost of the elections is too high.

In a letter addressed to Neos Kosmos (published in Thursday’s edition), Mr Tsakoumis condemned this attempt to abort elections and states that he was personally insulted by members during the AGM.

Stating that he expects a formal apology for this behaviour he writes: “I have the right, as any other member, to offer to the organisation, given that I have served the Community as an educator for many years.”

Oil dropped to a new 12-year low below $US30 a barrel in New York, while the discount on global benchmark Brent reached a five-year high as Iran moved closer to restoring exports.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell as much as 6.2 per cent and is down more than 10 per cent for the week. The grade slipped below $US30 a barrel on Tuesday for the first time since 2003. Sanctions on Iran may be lifted soon, allowing for a boost in oil shipments from OPEC’s fifth-biggest member. Prices are down on Iran and concern about China’s economy, according to Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of industry consultants IHS Inc.

“The plans by Iran to up exports by a fifth later this month once the sanctions are lifted is the last thing this market needed,” said John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital LLC, a New York-based hedge fund that focuses on energy. “There’s got to be a bottom someplace but we haven’t hit it yet.”

Crude capped a second annual loss in 2015 as OPEC effectively abandoned output limits amid a global surplus. The price decline is affecting producers with BHP Billiton expecting to book a $US4.9 billion writedown on its US shale assets, BP announcing a further 4000 job cuts and Petroleo Brasileiro slashing its spending plan.

Brent for March settlement dropped $US1.44, or 4.7 per cent, to $US29.44 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. Futures touched $US29.30, the lowest since February 2004. Brent dropped below $US30 Wednesday for the first time since April 2004. The European benchmark discount widened to as much as $US1.08 to March WTI, the biggest gap since 2010.

WTI for February delivery fell $US1.75, or 5.6 per cent, to $US29.45 a barrel at 11.14am on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract touched $US29.28, the lowest since November 2003. Total volume traded was 33 per cent higher than the 100-day average. Prices have lost 20 per cent this year.

Iran is trying to regain lost market share and doesn’t intend to pressure prices with an export increase once sanctions are removed, officials from its petroleum ministry and national oil company said this month.

Oil will turn into a new bull market before the year is out as the price rout shuts down sufficient production to erode the global glut, according to Goldman Sachs Group. The boom in US shale-oil production should reverse in the second half of the year, the bank said in a report. As US production slumps by 575,000 barrels a day, global oil markets will tip from surplus to deficit, Goldman predicts.

“The key theme for 2016 will be real fundamental adjustments that can re-balance markets to create the birth of a new bull market, which we still see happening in late 2016,” analysts Jeff Currie and Damien Courvalin wrote.

Gasoline for February delivery dropped 2.7 per cent to $US1.0396 a gallon and earlier touched $US1.0301, the lowest since February 2009. Diesel for February delivery decreased 3.6 per cent to 94.54 cents, after reaching 94.45, the least since May 2004.

A convicted rapist says he was the last person to see a mother-of-two before she disappeared from the small Victorian country town of Whorouly.

Michael Cardamone told Fairfax Media he was not involved with Karen Chetcuti’s disappearance, now the subject of a homicide squad investigation, but he was the last person to see her before she went missing.

“I don’t know what’s happened,” he said.

Mr Cardamone, who was released from jail last year after serving nine years for rape, lives around the corner from the 49-year-old month in the town of Whorouly, near Wangaratta.

Their properties share a boundary.

Mr Cardamone said he had invited Ms Chetcuti to his home to collect some tomatoes that he had grown and she was at his property from 8.40pm to 9.15pm on Tuesday.

“When she left here, she took off towards home,” he said.

He said the container of tomatoes she had taken was later found on a bench in Ms Chetcuti’s home.

Mr Cardamone was also interviewed by other media on Friday, telling them he had spoken to Ms Chetcuti over the fence at 9.15pm on Tuesday after he had been picking tomatoes.

Police searched parts of Mr Cardamone’s property on Friday and he said detectives had questioned him.

“I’m stressed out to the max, I haven’t been sleeping,” he said.

Mr Cardamone said he was being targeted because of his “incarceration”. He said investigators were welcome to search his home.

He said a white car had been seen leaving Ms Chetcuti’s home on Tuesday night, with her red car following behind. Her car was found burnt-out in Myrtleford, about 20 kilometres away, at 5.15am on Thursday.

Mr Cardamone said he saw Ms Chetcuti’s red car parked in a side street near the Target store in Myrtleford sometime before it was set alight.

It is understood another neighbour saw a white car leaving the Ms Chetcuti’s home on Tuesday night, but it is unclear as to what time.

Police said they were speaking to a number of people in relation to the disappearance.

Earlier on Friday, homicide squad detective Sergeant Sol Solomon said suspicions were raised about the disappearance when Ms Chetcuti did not turn up for work on Wednesday.

He said police checked her home and found the lights had been left on, and her handbag and wallet were still there. At that stage, her car was still missing.

“It certainly paints a picture of the involvement of a second party in her disappearance,” he said.

“There was no sign of any struggle or disturbance having occurred there.”

Ms Chetcuti, the mother of two teenagers, is well-known and liked in the Whorouly and Wangaratta area.

She had moved from Melbourne to Whorouly with her husband, who she is now separated from, to run the pub about two decades ago. The pair were publicans for about five years before Ms Chetcuti began working for the City of Wangaratta, where she had most recently been a records coordinator.

“Karen is a popular and valued member of staff,” City of Wangaratta chief executive officer Brendan McGrath said.

Friend Greg Haysom said Ms Chetcuti, who serves on a number of committees, is a “major part of Whorouly” and recently helped raise over $20,000 for the football club change rooms.

Mr Haysom described Ms Chetcuti as a “great mother” to her two children.

“I don’t think you will find anyone who would say a bad word about her, she has the most infectious smile,” he said.

Detectives asked anyone who saw Ms Chetcuti from Tuesday night, or her red Citroen, to come forward.

FISH are gasping for oxygen in the Hunter River for the second time in three years, and prawns are trying to “walk out of the water”, say witnesses.

Photos supplied to the Herald show lines of fish surfacing in the river at Hexham, or dead. The Environment Protection Authority on Thursday confirmed oxygen levels in the water had plunged to 0.1 milligrams per litre, where levels are normally between 6 and 8 milligrams per litre.

The low dissolved oxygen levels extend for more than 40 kilometres of the Hunter River, from Hinton to near Fern Bay, and the lower sections of the Williams and Paterson Rivers are also affected, the EPA said.

Further fish kills are expected because of low oxygen and high temperatures.
