Socceroos rise in FIFA world rankings

Socceroos rise in FIFA world rankings

The Socceroos were ranked 102 in late November.

Australia will enter next month’s Asian Cup on home soil.

Australia has risen two spots to number 100 in FIFA’s world rankings without playing a game.

The Socceroos were ranked 102 in late November after their loss to Japan, but have risen to 100 in the rankings which were released overnight.

It means Australia will enter next month’s Asian Cup on home soil with the 10th highest ranking of the Asian nations.

Greece has also moved up one spot to 24, as has Cyprus, which sits 87th.

The top three remain unchanged since September, with Germany still leading the world followed by Argentina and Colombia.

Despite three expert saves by Dean Bouzanis, the Wanderers fell on penalties.

The Western Sydney Wanderers’ frustrating Club World Cup campaign ended with a loss on penalties to African champions ES Setif of Algeria in the play-off for fifth place in Marrakesh.

Meanwhile, Auckland City’s fairytale run came to end in the semi-finals following a 2-1 defeat to Argentina’s San Lorenzo in extra time.

Wanderers imports Romeo Castelan and Vitor Saba scored brilliant goals in either half, as the match was locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

With no extra time played in the fifth-place play-off, back-up goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis made three saves in a marathon penalty shoot-out but was also one of four Wanderers players to miss a spot kick as ET Setif claimed the win.

The defeat ended a tumultuous campaign which featured threats of a player strike over prize money and a controversial 3-1 extra time loss to Mexican side Cruz Azul in the quarter-finals.

The Wanderers still take home $1.2 million in prizemoney for finishing sixth.

The Wanderers will now return to Australia to focus on reversing their poor A-League form, which has them sitting last after 10 rounds.

Go Greek in March:Month-long celebration of Greek language planned

Go Greek in March

Mike Zafiropoulos AM: architect of the Speak Greek in March project.

An ambitious initiative to encourage greater use of the Greek language at home has been proposed by designating March 2015 as ‘Speak Greek’ month. Behind the idea is former general manager of SBS and chair of Channel 31, Mike Zafiropoulos AM.

Mr Zafiropoulos, who holds the presidency of Fronditha Care, told Neos Kosmos that such a project could help challenge worrying trends in the use of Greek within families.

“Greek as a language spoken at home is gradually declining in Australia,” he said.

“These days, first generation Greek Australians are hardly one third of the Greek community, so there’s been a natural decline, because of inter-marriages, and the second generation finding it easier to use English in their communications.”

Fronditha’s president said the idea for Speak Greek month was partly driven from experiences within his own family.

“It occurred to me as a parent of a couple of kids at Greek school, and witnessing the struggles they are making to speak Greek … and I suppose a guilt that I should be doing more as a bilingual parent to help them with their learning.”

A model for the initiative, says Mr Zafiropoulos, is the global Lights Out campaign aimed at drawing attention to energy saving.

“Ours is similar, it’s about highlighting the fact that we need to do more if we want to keep our language alive.

‘Let’s put the lights on the Greek language this March.”

With the Antipodes Festival and Greek National Day both falling within the month, March appears the ideal period to promote the language.

Asked if families would be able to sustain four weeks of Greek being the primary language of communication, Mr Zafiropoulos said: “Absolutely they can, if there’s an effort and if it’s widely-known. I’m very optimistic.”

Meanwhile reaction to the idea has been positive. Bill Papastergiadis, president of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, said he was delighted to support the campaign and that GOCMV welcomed the initiative.
“Language is the gateway to culture. Stay close to our wonderful traditions by conversing in Greek,” said Mr Papastergiadis.

Reflecting on his own strategy for encouraging Greek to be spoken at home regularly, GOCMV’s president said negotiating an arrangement with one’s children was one way to go.

“One thing I do, is I’ve an agreement with my little kids to spend our weekends trying to talk to one another in Greek.

“It’s a win-win for everyone, as it provides us with a protracted period of time to practice, but it’s also not an overly restrictive period for not speaking English.
Manos Tzimpragos, Principal of GOCMV’s language schools, told Neos Kosmos:

“It’s a great initiative. It will give an opportunity for children and families to be immersed in the language, and for parents to get involved in real life situations where the language is used.

“By coincidence, we are planning for our teaching programs in March to include playing traditional Greek games, in which children will use the language, so that can compliment Speak Greek month.”

Tasos Douvartzidis, chair of Community Languages Australia, the umbrella body that unites ethnic schools across Australia, said that the project was to be applauded.

“There is a need to take a positive approach to embracing the Greek language, and not enforcing it,” said Mr Douvartzidis.

“We need positive pathways to see that speaking Greek becomes, let us say ‘trendy’ within households”.

The Speak Greek in March project will look to gather momentum in the new year with consultations planned with media outlets, schools, teachers, community organisations and other stakeholders.

Visa price hike to impact Greek community

pennydimopoulos

Concerned: Registered migration agent Penny Dimopoulos

Partner and secondary applicant costs to increase by 50 per cent.

The cost of bringing a spouse or prospective partner to Australia is set to increase dramatically, as the Abbott government looks to the price of visas to help the cash-strapped Australian economy.

As part of its emergency repair job on the budget deficit, the government has announced it will increase visa application charges for partner visas by 50 per cent.

The price rise will come into effect from January 1 and was announced in the mid-year budget review on Monday. The price hike is expected to raise $373.6 million in revenue over four years.

Provisional and prospective marriage visas, currently costing $3085 will increase to $4627, with temporary and permanent partner visas – currently priced at $4575 increasing to $6865.

Registered migration agent Penny Dimopoulos told Neos Kosmos that the increase was likely to have a significant impact on the Greek Australian community.

“In terms of applicants from Greece who are returning to Australia with their partners and children, the increase in costs may be difficult to bear, particularly if applicants have been unemployed due to the crisis,” she said.

“People who are suffering from economic hardship may need to delay or reconsider applying for a partner visa.”

Ms Dimopoulos said that the Immigration Department has confirmed some secondary applicant charges would also be increasing by 50 per cent.

“This means that if a primary applicant and a secondary applicant aged over 18 (for example a uni student child) are included in an onshore partner visa application after January 1, the fee is likely to be in excess of $10,000.”

Terry Antonis beats curse with Socceroos call-up for Asian Cup

About time: Terry Antonis has been due some good luck after a wretched run of late.

For the one-time boy wonder of Australian football, it wasn’t that long ago that Terry Antonis was wondering what he had done wrong.

A collapsed big-money transfer deal, season-ending injuries, form concerns and even a car accident conspired to make him feel as though he’d been cursed from above. But with selection in the Socceroos squad for next month’s Asian Cup, suddenly everything seems back on course for the 21-year old.

Now he is just hoping he can get to the airport to fly to Melbourne for the Socceroos training camp next week without incident – unlike the last time he was called up in November, when a collision put him in hospital and out of the friendly match against Japan.

“I was devastated when I couldn’t go to that camp because of the car accident,” Antonis said on Tuesday.

“It was such a freaky thing and you never know what’s going to happen with the national team and when you’ll get your next chance to impress.

“I was so upset because it could have been a big setback. But I went back to Sydney FC, just kept doing what I’d been doing and stayed focused on playing well for them. Thankfully that proved enough.”

Antonis is a full year younger than any other player in the squad but his travails meant the call-up was brought relief as much as pride for the one-time Sydney Olympic junior.

“To get picked for a national team at any age group is a huge honour but to be picked for the Socceroos for a huge tournament on home soil is just another level,” he said.

“That’s what every player dreams about. I can’t wait to play in a tournament where the whole crowd is behind you and there’s such a big prize on the line.”

On face value, Antonis will have a hard time cracking the trio of Mile Jedinak, Mark Milligan and Mark Bresciano, who appear to have a lock on Australia’s central midfield triangle. However, he is more than confident of stepping in should coach Ange Postecoglou call his name.

“If I get that chance, I’ll give everything to make it work and to do my bit,” he said. “There are some big-name players in there. I’ve known Tim Cahill for a long time but to play and train with him and these others will be an amazing experience. I want to learn and but also play my part.”

While he boasts just three caps for the senior team, he has accumulated 30 under-age caps for Australia and is better versed than most when it comes to playing in tournament conditions.

“I’ve been to the Asian Cup for the under-20s and went under-20s World Cup as an under-age player, although I had to pull out of the one for my own age group because of a quad injury,” Antonis said. “I’ve been through a lot of tournaments already, which I hope gives me an idea of what to expect.”

From outside, the evolution of his game from bit-part contributor to star midfielder can easily be traced to the arrival of coach Graham Arnold at Sydney FC. Antonis happily confirms the theory when pressed on what has made this season so different.

“What ‘Arnie’ has done for my game and my development is just something I’m so thankful for. He just knows how to get the best out of every player,” he said. “He and ‘Clarky’ [fitness coach Andrew Clark] have done wonders for me. It’s the first time I’ve had no niggles and I’m playing without restrictions on my body each week. It’s made a big difference.”

A big difference will come on Antonis’ price tag, too. Sydney must thank their lucky stars the $300,000 deal to send him to Italian club Parma fell through 18 months ago. It is hard to think he is now worth anything less than $1 million.

“When I sat down down and spoke with my agent, it actually wasn’t a hard choice to stay.” he said.

“This is a great club and I’ll always love playing for Sydney. I still want to go abroad, of course. But at the moment, I’m in the national team and I’m still learning from some great coaches.”

Antonis will get one final hitout with the Sky Blues, at home against Adelaide United on Boxing Day, before linking up with the national team a day later.

“It’s an important game for us because we’ve let ourselves down a little bit in recent weeks,” he said. “We probably didn’t put away our chances against Wellington and that cost us. That’s made a win on Friday even more important.”

What we learned from the Socceroos squad: No special treatment for Jedinak

754742_heroa

Ange Postecoglou on Tuesday announced his final squad for the Asian Cup on home soil next month, with few surprises but plenty of attacking fire power among the 23.

No special treatment for Jedinak

“Everyone will come into camp after this weekend’s round of football and that includes Mile.”

Crystal Palace had hoped to keep their skipper for the Premier League match away to Aston Villa on January 1, but the Socceroos captain will, as dictated by FIFA rules, be expected to join up with the national team for their pre-tournament training camp, which begins in Melbourne on December 27.

It was always a forlorn hope for Palace, with Postecoglou understandably keen to avoid a repeat of the injury the holding midfielder suffered on the final day of the last league season, forcing him to race against the clock to be fit for the World Cup.

Fans none the wiser about pass mark

Postecoglou has insisted during Australia’s recent run of poor friendly results that he wants to be judged in competitive action. However, when asked what the bare minimum is in terms of how far the Socceroos need to progress in the Asian Cup, the head coach refused to give a definite answer, instead turning the focus to his team’s on-field performance.

“I want us to win and I want us to win playing attacking football,” he said.

“It’s right people have expectations of their national team. Internally, we’re trying to create a really exciting and successful team. That’s always my internal measure and that’ll continue for this tournament.”

There’s no denying the men in green and gold surprised a few doubters by pushing Chile and the Netherlands hard at the World Cup, but the fact remains they came home from Brazil empty handed. Another early exit against less impressive opposition and in front of their own fans will not be tolerated.

Lack of match fitness not a concern, but should it be?

There are several players among the final 23 who have been struggling badly for regular playing time of late, including Chris Herd, Jason Davidson and Ivan Franjic. Robbie Kruse, still working his way back from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, has been spending plenty of time on the bench at Bayer Leverkusen.

Postecoglou claimed not to be worried but that lack of recent game-time, attributing it to competition for places at club sides.

“They’re not fitness issues,” he said.

“Herdy’s been on the bench the last couple of weeks for a Premier League club, he hasn’t got a run but he’s training well and training very strongly. Krusy’s the same. There’s certainly no fitness issues there. Jason, he’s taken a big punt with his career and he’s finding it a big challenge.”

Be that as it may, one of the coach’s previous conditions for national team selection was to be in form. While exceptions must be made due to vagaries of club football, there’s no denying several players will be rusty to say the least when the opening game against Kuwait rolls around on January 9.
