Nick Xenephon: Senate mentor to independents starts his own political party

What out Clive: there’s a new party in town.

CLIVE Palmer’s circus act in the Senate faces a new threat with Independent Nick Xenophon starting up a new party — NXT — to field candidates at the next Federal election.

Senator Xenophon said he is in talks with a range of mystery high-profile candidates to run for the Upper House. The party will be called NXT — Nick Xenophon Team.

He said the current system was at breaking point because of a lack of trust in politicians.

“Australians just don’t feel like the major parties are looking out for them,” he said.

“I will try and find like-minded people, to run in every state and territory, who share the same commonsense approach to politics, and at the next federal election we will ask the Australian voters to give us their support.’’

The veteran SA senator has emerged as a mentor to PUP turned rogue Independent Jacqui Lambie, former DLP turned independent John Madigan and Motoring Enthusiast Party Senator Ricky Muir.

But Senator Xenophon stressed his colleagues were “fiercely independent’’ and would not be joining him in the new party.

Senator Xenophon said he would fund his new party through: micro donations, almost like crowd sourcing.’’
