Την υπόσχεση ότι θα τιμήσει τις προεκλογικές του υποσχέσεις και δεν θα απογοητεύσει τους πολίτες της Βικτώριας επανέλαβε χθες ο εντολοδόχος πρωθυπουργός της Πολιτείας, Ντάνιελ Άντριους, μετά την εντυπωσιακή του επιτυχία στην εκλογική αναμέτρηση του Σαββάτου υπογραμμίζοντας ότι «ξεκινά μια νέα εποχή για τη Βικτώρια».
Με καταμετρημένο το 58,5% των ψήφων, οι Εργατικοί φέρεται να κερδίζουν τουλάχιστον 47 έδρες από το σύνολο των 88 και να έχουν αυτοδυναμία.
Ο Συνασπισμός Φιλελευθέρων-Εθνικών κέρδισε τουλάχιστον 37 έδρες, ενώ, επίσης, τουλάχιστον μια έδρα κερδίζουν και οι Πράσινοι.
Κάποιες έδρες παρέμεναν αμφίρροπες.

Για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία τους, οι Πράσινοι κέρδισαν έδρα στην πολιτειακή Βουλή. Όπως και στην ομοσπονδιακή Βουλή, κέρδισαν την έδρα Μέλμπουρν, που κατείχε για τους Εργατικούς η ομογενής Τζένιφερ Κάνις.

Η στροφή υπέρ των Εργατικών ανήλθε στο 2.5%, ενώ η δύναμη του Φιλελεύθερου Κόμματος μειώθηκε κατά 1.8% και του Εθνικού Κόμματος κατά 1.2%
Το ποσοστό των Πράσινων παρέμεινε αμετάβλητο.

Στη Γερουσία τα πράγματα ήταν συγκεχυμένα. Το βέβαιο είναι ότι οι Εργατικοί δεν θα έχουν την πλειοψηφία, που σημαίνει ότι θα δυσκολευτούν να εφαρμόσουν το πρόγραμμά τους.

Εν τω μεταξύ ο κ. Άντριους ενημερώθηκε από τους γραφειοκράτες για την κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη Βικτώρια και λίγο αργότερα δήλωσε ότι το εκλογικό σώμα του έδωσε εντολή να μην προχωρήσει με την κατασκευή της επίμαχης οδικής αρτηρίας East West Link, παρά το γεγονός ότι η προηγούμενη συντηρητική είχε υπογράψει (την τελευταία στιγμή) συμβόλαια αγνοώντας τις προειδοποιήσεις των Εργατικών.

Ο κ. Άντριους ανακοίνωσε, επίσης, ότι η πολιτειακή Βουλή θα ξεκινήσει τη νέα της σύνοδο πριν τα Χριστούγεννα «γιατί η νέα κυβέρνηση έχει να αποτελέσει σημαντικό έργο».

Την ίδια στιγμή το Φιλελεύθερο Κόμμα ψάχνει για νέο αρχηγό και υπαρχηγό.
Τόσο ο απερχόμενος πολιτειακός πρωθυπουργός, Ντένις Νάπθαϊν, όσο και η υπαρχηγός του κόμματος, Λουίζ Άσερ, ανακοίνωσαν ότι παραιτούνται από τις θέσεις τους «για να αναλάβει νέο αίμα».

Η κοινοβουλευτική ομάδα των Φιλελευθέρων θα συνέλθει την Τρίτη ή την Τετάρτη για να εκλέξει νέο αρχηγό.

Πιθανοί υποψήφιοι για την αρχηγία είναι οι πρώην υπουργοί Μάθιου Γκάι και Μάικλ Ο’Μπράιαν.

Πάνω από 2.000 θέσεις εργασίας στον ναυπηγικό τομέα κινδυνεύουν να χαθούν σε τρεις Πολιτείες της χώρας το 2015, αν ναυαγήσει το μεγάλο έργο Air Warfare Destroyer, σύμφωνα με τη διαρροή εμπιστευτικών πληροφοριών.

Αν συμβεί αυτό, αναφέρεται, στο ίδιο έγγραφο, θα αποτελέσει μεγάλο πλήγμα στον ναυπηγικό χώρο της Βικτώριας, Ν.Ν. Ουαλίας και Ν. Αυστραλίας.
Οι εν λόγω πληροφορίες είναι από μία πρόχειρη αναφορά του πρώην γραμματέα του Ναυτικού των ΗΠΑ, Don Winter, και του Αυστραλού ναυπηγού, John White, στους οποίους έδωσε εντολή η κυβέρνηση να ερευνήσουν το έργο του οποίου το κόστος ανέρχεται σε $8,5 δις. Η κυβέρνηση αρνήθηκε να δημοσιεύσει την έρευνα.

Αν το εν λόγω έργο ναυαγήσει σε κίνδυνο είναι πάνω από 1.000 θέσεις εργασίας στα ναυπηγεία του Williamstown, στη Μελβούρνη, και 780 στο Newcastle της Ν.Ν. Ουαλίας.
Η κατασκευή πλοίων του ναυτικού στην Αυστραλία έχει πληγεί από την απώλεια έμπειρου εργατικού δυναμικού γεγονός που οφείλεται στην έλλειψη συνεχούς και συστηματικής παροχής εργασίας.

Πρόταση που συμπεριλαμβάνεται στην έρευνα αναφέρει ότι η καλύτερη λύση, στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, προκειμένου να σωθεί η εν λόγω βιομηχανία, είναι να επιβραδυνθεί η κατασκευή του έργου Air Warfare Destroyer, και να επιταχυνθεί η κατασκευή σειράς φρεγατών που θα αντικαταστήσουν τα πολεμικά Anzac, εξασφαλίζοντας, μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο, μια σταθερή ροή απασχόλησης από το ένα έργο στο άλλο.

ONLY weeks after signing up to an ambitious growth target in Brisbane, the government’s economic credentials have taken another beating as the country’s economic growth rate slumps to less than half what was expected.

Australia’s economy grew by 0.3 per cent in the September quarter and by 2.7 per cent in the 12 months to September, official figures show.

Gross domestic product (GDP) growth was expected to rise by 0.7 per cent in the quarter for an annual rate of 3.1 per cent, according to AAP’s survey of 15 economists.

The Australian dollar slumped on the news, dipping below US84c to a four-year low on the weaker-than-expected result.

The local currency hit US83.97c, its lowest level since July 2010, after the figures were released at 11:30am (AEDT), down from US84.62c just before the data.

News of a dramatic slowdown in growth will put pressure on the government to dump its controversial spending cuts, and raise the possibility for further official cuts in interest rates in the new year.

Australia’s economic growth rate has to 2.7 per cent over the year to September, but real net national disposable income finished the 12-month period only 0.8 per cent higher.

Mining, financial services and IT made the biggest contributions to growth of the quarter, while public administration and construction shrank, which will surprise economists given the jump in home building.

A drop in non-residential construction was the main driver behind the weaker-than-expected figures, JP Morgan economist Tom Kennedy said.

“Non-dwelling construction took off 0.6 per cent and that was clearly the biggest drag and that was a bit of a surprise to us,” he said.

“Private capital expenditure is the key drag here and is the big reason why we got the downside surprise.

“Non-mining is picking up in a broad sense but it hasn’t really picked up sufficiently, it seems, to really offset the weakness in the resources sector.”

But Commsec chief economist Craig James said economic growth was moving towards the RBA’s expected forecasts for the December quarter.

“On the basis of current forecasts, the Reserve Bank had expected annual growth to slow to 2.5 per cent in the December quarter,” he said.

“In short, the economy is evolving as expected, so the Reserve Bank is unlikely to be tempted to cut rates again.

“We think that the next move in rates will be up, but not until August 2015 at the earliest.”

Mr James expects the economy to grow at around 3 per cent over the 2014/15 financial year, then accelerate in the first half of the following year.

“While some analysts are tipping another rate cut, that could actually be counteractive – creating greater angst about the future amongst consumers and businesses,” he said

Exports of goods and services grew 0.6 per cent over the three months, one of the biggest contributions to economic growth, but the Australia’s terms of trade fell 3.5 per cent over the same period foreshadowing weaker contributions from the sector in the future.

Household spending rose 0.5 per cent in the September quarter and was up 2.5 per cent over the year to September, seasonally adjusted.

Total investment in housing fell 0.9 per cent in the quarter to be up 6.8 per cent in the year to September.

Total gross fixed capital formation — investment by households, businesses and government — fell 2.7 per cent in the quarter and was down 2.8 per cent over the year.

Domestic final demand, a measure of total spending in the economy, fell 0.3 per cent in the quarter and was up 0.9 per cent over the year.

A key measure of inflation, the implicit price deflator for household final consumption, was flat in the September quarter, from a rise of 0.5 per cent in the previous quarter, and was up 2.0 per cent over the year.

Farm GDP, in chain volume measures, rose 1.5 per cent in the September quarter and was down 3.9 per cent in the 12 months to September.

AUSTRALIA’s refugee intake is to be boosted by 7,500 places, following government negotiations with crucial crossbench Senators.

EARLIER: Government brings back temporary protection visas

The increase, to 18,750 over the next four years, will cost $100 million, Scott Morrison said this morning.

The Immigration Minister also revealed the government will provide work rights to 25,000 currently on bridging visas, but it would be contingent on legislation passing the Senate.

His announcement comes on the back of earlier agreements with the Palmer United Party.

The government has already failed twice in reinstating temporary protection visas and has been negotiating with the new Senate since July.

The new measures are designed to win over crossbench support to resurrect temporary prtoection visas in this final week of Parliament for the year.

When asked if he has another alternative if this too is unsuccessful in the Upper House, Mr Morrison said he was on “Plan A”.

The Minister stressed the need for the bill to pass to clear the “legacy case load” of asylum seekers left by Labor.

“The bill passing will mean that people will be processed, that children and families will come out of detention, that our maritime powers will be strengthened … and that the refugee intake will be ultimately increased and people who are waiting for claims to be processed will have work rights.

“That is a very strong package, I am sure even you would agree.”

Η αδυναμία του δημάρχου Θεσσαλονίκης Γιάννη Μπουτάρη στο τσιγάρο είναι γνωστή. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που ο δήμαρχος δεν πέρασε καθόλου καλά στο πρόσφατο ταξίδι του στην Αυστραλία.

Σύμφωνα με το thestival.gr o ίδιος διηγήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της συνεδρίασης του δημοτικού συμβουλίου τι έκανε στον τόπο όπου το κάπνισμα έχει απαγορευτεί σχεδόν σε όλους τους χώρους: «Όπου μ’ έπαιρνε, κάπνιζα κρυφά», παραδέχθηκε.

Και αφού περιέγραψε τα πακέτα των τσιγάρων και τις τρομακτικές φωτογραφίες που τα «κοσμούν», τα οποία μάλιστα κοστίζουν 22 δολάρια, ο Γιάννης Μπουτάρης αναφέρθηκε και στην εμπειρία του στο ξενοδοχείο.

«Ζήτησα δωμάτιο για καπνιστές και μου είπαν όχι. Τους είπα “και τώρα τι θα κάνω;” και ξέρετε τι μου απάντησαν; “Θα γίνεις φίλος με τον θυρωρό!”».

Σε συνεδρίαση της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου, την Τρίτη, στην οποία συμμετείχαν οι υπουργοί Εξωτερικών των Δυτικών Βαλκανίων, ο ευρωβουλευτής Νίκος Ανδρουλάκης υποστήριξε ότι η ευρωπαϊκή προοπτική των χωρών των Δυτικών Βαλκανίων «είναι δρόμος προς την ειρήνη, την ευημερία και την ανάπτυξη των λαών της περιοχής», αφήνοντας δια παντός πίσω τους τα δεινά των προηγούμενων δεκαετιών. Συγκεκριμένα, ως εισηγητής των σοσιαλιστών για την έκθεση προόδου του Μαυροβουνίου, επεσήμανε την ανάγκη ολοκλήρωσης των μεταρρυθμίσεων από πλευράς Μαυροβουνίου αναφορικά με το νομοθετικό πλαίσιο για τη χρηματοδότηση των κομμάτων και επίσης τη δημιουργία ανεξάρτητης αρχής εναντίον της διαφθοράς.

Δεν παρέλειψε ωστόσο να απευθυνθεί προς τον Υπουργό Εξωτερικών των Σκοπίων, κ. Poposki, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι η ευρωπαϊκή προοπτική της FYROM δεν περνά μόνο από τις μεταρρυθμίσεις που επιβάλλεται να γίνουν, αλλά και από μια δίκαιη λύση στο ζήτημα της ονομασίας που θα βασίζεται στην κοινή λογική και τον σεβασμό της ιστορικής πραγματικότητας των δύο χωρών.

Australians who get into trouble overseas could be billed for receiving consular assistance, under a new plan unveiled by the Federal Government.

There will also be new limits on what help is provided to people who knowingly and recklessly break local laws.

“Some individuals have a pattern of behaviour that has required multiple instances of consular assistance in the past,” Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said as she launched the new policy.

“I want to send a very clear message – consular assistance should not be seen as a right, it is a privilege.

“If you deliberately or wilfully abuse the system, you will only receive the absolute minimum level of assistance and advice.”

According to the new consular strategy, there are some “misunderstandings” about what Foreign Affairs Department staff can do.

Some examples of traveller queries received by the department include:

• “I’m going on a cruise. What will the food be like? Can you drink the water on the ship?”
• A request from an Australian traveller for Foreign Affairs Department staff to feed her dogs while she was away
• Requests to book accommodation, and provide an embassy driver to take the traveller to the airport.
• “What is the best hotel in Phuket?”

Last year, Foreign Affairs Department staff provided assistance to nearly 15,000 Australians overseas.

Ms Bishop said it is important that consular resources were spent helping those most in need and who are most vulnerable, including women and children.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne is committed to passing his education reform bill, reintroducing it on Wednesday morning after it was defeated in the senate on Tuesday night.

The upper house decisively voted down the bill without letting it get to the second reading stage where amendments could have been considered.

Mr Pyne said the university deregulation bill would be reintroduced on Wednesday to be debated in February, and he hoped senators were prepared to change their mind.

The University of Western Australia said fees would jump 30 per cent if higher education institutions are able to set their own fees under the proposal.

“I believe we are making progress. I’m a great believer in forward momentum and I won’t be taking a step back,” Mr Pyne said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“The future for universities without reform will be slow decline… it will give us the chance to be competitive.”

Speaking on ABC’s 7.30 program, Mr Pyne conceded the new bill is nine-tenths the same as the previous bill.

“Tomorrow I’ll be introducing a new reform bill which picks up nine of the 10 elements of the previous bill,” he said.

Under the proposal, interest on university loans will be charged at the CPI rate, instead of a government bond rate.

“As far as I’m concerned, round one is over, round two begins tonight.”
