Homeless people seeking shelter in hostels in Athens won’t need to undergo HIV tests to have their applications approved.

Homeless people applying for admission to municipal hostels in Athens no longer have to undergo HIV tests to have their applications approved, according to a decision by City Hall.

The restriction was lifted to mark World AIDS Day on Monday.

Unprotected sex is the leading cause of HIV transmission, followed by drug use through shared needles, according to the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), which recorded a drop in the number of intravenous drug users who tested HIV positive – 84 people in the first 10 months of this year compared to 239 in the same period of 2013.
