Having impressed against FC Barcelona on matchday one, APOEL FC are ready to go again at home to AFC Ajax though coach Giorgos Donis says it will be a very different game.

Giorgos Donis, APOEL coach
After one big match, Barcelona away, we have another: our first home game. We knew from day one that our chances would be limited in this group, but to increase them and to have hope we need to get some points at home. We know we have to face the Dutch champions, a massive team. We know their philosophy is the same as ours, even though they constantly change their squad. It is an attacking philosophy.

We also need to play well with the ball. This game demands more things from our team than against Barcelona. Against Barcelona we were always behind the ball. We had to play well in our half, which we did almost perfectly. The demands tomorrow will be greater in all aspects because we don’t want to give them possession.

We have to be realistic. Had we said before the Barcelona game that we would be seeking 50–50 possession, then we would not have been realistic in our approach. And to say we will have more than 35% possession in our home game against Barcelona would also be unrealistic. Although Ajax are a great team, they are no Barcelona. We want more possession in this game, but possession doesn’t always guarantee a victory. Tomorrow we must press in all areas of the pitch.

Mind games are always part of coaching players. It is difficult to keep a balance when you have just played Barcelona at Camp Nou and then suddenly you have to play a local team like Ayia Napa. Footballer are not robots – you cannot just press a button and put them in the right mindset. Some fans may underestimate the level of difficulty in our domestic league.

 Frank de Boer, Ajax coach
It will be a tough match. APOEL have good players who play good football and they also have experience because the average age of the team is 28, with many different nationalities. We all saw them against Barcelona and how good they were. We know they have a fanatical following and the fans are close to the pitch. My players are young but know what to expect and we are confident we can handle whatever is thrown at us.My players have Champions League experience even if they are still quite young. They are prone to making more mistakes than other more experienced players, but they still have experience playing against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. We have prepared well for this game and sometimes young players can be the difference when it comes to winning.

Hopefully we can end Ajax’s disappointing away run very soon, if not tomorrow. But we also need to make sure we do not underestimate APOEL. They deserve to be in this competition. If they get the ball and play their own system then they can be a very organised and disciplined side. They have some quality Brazilian players and a good strong Irish striker [Cillian Sheridan] who gets lots of help from creative players around him.

Champions League:Paris Saint-Germain vs Barcelona

©AFP/Getty Images Zlatan Ibrahimović will be a notable absentee

Laurent Blanc is a firm admirer of FC Barcelona but right now is only interested in getting his Paris Saint-Germain side firing in time to meet his former club in Group F.

Possible lineups
Paris: Sirigu; Van der Wiel, David Luiz, Marquinhos, Maxwell; Verratti, Thiago Motta, Matuidi; Pastore, Cavani, Lucas.
Out: Ibrahimović (heel), Lavezzi (hamstring)
Doubtful: Thiago Silva (thigh)

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Alves, Mathieu, Piqué, Alba; Busquets, Iniesta, Rakitić; Pedro, Messi, Neymar.
Out: Masip (finger), Rafinha (thigh), Douglas (foot)

Laurent Blanc, Paris coach
It’s no easy task to lead your team back where they belong and get the same great results as last year, but by staying true to our approach we’ll make it. Tomorrow we’ll play against … I was going to say our ‘role models’ but that’s not the case, although they’ve been playing in this system for a long time. It’s going to be an extraordinary match for players, fans and even journalists.

We’re missing a bit of aggression, I think, especially when we don’t have the ball. We’ll have to be particularly strong in that area because we know that when Barcelona have the ball, it’s very, very difficult to get it back.

Zlatan is still nursing his heel injury, he didn’t train this morning. That’s very unfortunate, but I had prepared with this in mind. It’ll be difficult without him – it always is – but we’ll have to make do and we have some very talented forwards. We’ll have to compensate with a great team performance.

Barcelona have always been one of my favourite teams, especially given their football philosophy. Some like it, some don’t; personally I love it. They’ve of course been very successful, winning numerous trophies in the last ten years, but what’s most important is that they played an entertaining brand of football, scoring lots of goals. I did play for Barcelona, but that was a long time ago and I only spent a season there. Tomorrow my aim will be to beat them and I think we have the quality to do it.

Luis Enrique, Barcelona coach
The absence of Zlatan Ibrahimović is significant for Paris, but not so much for us as it won’t change the way we play. I probably did watch the quarter-final between the clubs two seasons ago, but I don’t remember it. I can’t remember every match I watch.

When you’re a coach, you develop a natural distrust regarding your opposite number’s comments, so we’ll see tomorrow how they play. We’ll need to play very well and show a lot of determination and intent. The most important match is always the next one, so this Paris game is the most important one right now – but we’ll have just as important ones afterwards.

Lionel Messi is impressive on so many levels, but he’s also our number one defender, although we don’t talk too much about it. He’s a very important player for us, but so are many others: the crucial thing is how they all combine together.

The commander of Australian forces in the Middle East said the troops are ready to begin air strikes the moment the order is given.

Cabinet is expected to sign off on military action this week, as our troops and jets were put through their paces.

Six Super Hornets were in the air for the first time since arriving in the Middle East, getting to know the conditions and co-ordinating with coalition allies.

“To ensure that we have bed down properly, that we are, no kidding, ready to go, should the government make that decision to commence operations here in the Middle East,” Air Commodore Steve Roberton said.

Six hundred defence personnel, a re-fueller and early-warning aircraft are all in place.

“We’ve managed to deploy the largest air-task group since Vietnam,” Commodore Roberton said.

“We’ve gotten over here within days, and we’re ready for combat operations.”

Cabinet meets tomorrow, but it’s understood the green light won’t come until later in the week, after a recommendation from an international security committee.

“We would be prudent and measured,” Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said.

“We will go in at the invitation of the Iraqi government.

“We want to ensure that we have in place the appropriate legal framework took over the immunities, and privileges and protections.”

Ms Bishop said the focus was on starving the terrorist organisation of weapons, foreign fighters and funds.
