AFL Grand Final:Crystal ball betting

Crystal ball betting

Leonidas Kolokathis sees the Sydney Swans narrowly getting out on top.

Two Greek Australian psychics try their hand at predicting the AFL Grand Final. Their results might shock you.

If you’re a betting person, every little bit of information can help. Perusing match previews, tracking injuries and hanging off the coach’s every word might be a sure fire way to getting the upper hand against your average punter, but here at Neos Kosmos, we do things a little differently.

Our bets have been psychic approved.

That’s right, we’ve interviewed not one, but two Greek Australian psychics to find out who will be holding the AFL premiership cup on Saturday.

Both teams definitely deserve the trophy, but one team in particular has more of an upper hand our psychics tells us.

If the cards are right, we’ll be looking at an MCG bathed in red and white. Both psychics, without knowing what the other’s reading came up with tipped the Sydney Swans winning the match.

They differed with the margin of points at the final siren.

Tasmanian Greek Australian psychic, Cassandra Knight says her reading came up with the Swans as clear winners, while Hawthorn look like they’ll be
good sports about the loss.

“I think the Sydney Swans will win, Hawthorn will put in a good game,” she says.

“When I do a reading for it it’s showing the Swans celebrating and Hawthorn showing a supporting role, meaning they’re not the winners but they’re second.”

She thinks the Swans aren’t going to win a “long margin” and feels the match will be close.

For fellow psychic, Leonidas Kolokathis, his reading was much more specific and believes Hawthorn will have the upper hand in the first half.

“I think that Hawthorn will probably trump Sydney in the first quarter, so Hawthorn will be leading in the first quarter, I think Sydney and Hawthorn will be quite even in the second quarter and in the third quarter Sydney will come back and put their foot down and really get ahead and it will get even in the last quarter with Sydney just holding on,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

Amazingly, when he first read the match, he saw the Sydney Swan colours and the number 16, something Leonidas interprets as meaning the Swans will win by a margin of 16 points.

This was the first time Leonidas had done a reading on a sporting match, so doesn’t know how accurate his reading will be.

For Cassandra, the reading was only the second sports related prediction she’s done.

She correctly predicted the Marcos Baghdatis and Roger Federer Australian Open match, even if she was rooting for the Greek Cypriot to win.

“I did predict it correctly, and I remember wanting the Greek guy to win,” she says with a laugh.

All will be revealed on Saturday, but at least for them, their predictions come with quite good odds regardless.

It’s still a 50/50 chance.

Greek Australian voyeur sentenced

Apostolos Kipouros used a mirror and a mobile phone to film women in public toilets.

A voyeur who used a mirror and mobile phone to film women on public toilets has been sentenced to 250 hours’ community service.

Apostolos Kipouros, 19 years old, was discovered by women at Woden Westfield shopping centre in Canberra earlier this year.

On one occasion, while a woman was on the toilet, she noticed a mirror and phone coming from under the cubicle wall. She screamed and ran off, and another woman also ran out of a different cubicle. Security were called and Kipouros was found still in the cubicle between where the two women had been. He had a black hood pulled over his head and a phone and tablet with him.

Apostolos Kipouros was interviewed by police and later admitted to filming the women; something he said he’d done to impress his friends. He said he’d filmed women in his homeland of Greece before coming to Australia.

Police examined his phone and discovered more videos.

Kipouros conduct was described by prosecutor Phoebe Burgoyne-Scutts as “alarming behaviour to say the least”.

His lawyer Paul Edmonds said his client understood the seriousness of the crimes and recognised he needed counselling.

He said the teenager had no criminal history, a supportive family, was studying, working and had no drug, alcohol, or mental health issues.

Mr Morrison sentenced Kipouros to 250 hours’ community service and a two-year good behaviour order.

Olympiakos, PAOK on equal points

The two Super League teams will be chasing another three points this weekend to ensure they keep their top positions.

Olympiakos spent just two nights alone on top of the Super League, as PAOK joined the champions on 10 points through its 1-0 victory at Panetolikos early this week.

The Thessaloniki giant was a shadow of the team that had put four past Zimbru and Platanias, three past Niki Volou and six past Dinamo Minsk in the last few weeks, but still managed to win at a ground where it had lost last season. Panetolikos has also shaved two points off Olympiakos this season.

The win for PAOK came through a penalty kick by Robert Mak on the 36th minute, and the visitors only had one more good chance in the game, hitting the woodwork on the 64th, but were not threatened with the exception of an injury-time scare.

PAOK will take on OFI Crete on Monday, while Olympiakios will take on Antromitos on Sunday, both hoping to stay ahead in these early days.

Meanwhile Atromitos reacted to its 1-0 loss at OFI Crete with the sacking of manager Giorgos Paraschos. Former OFI boss Sa Pinto, from Portugal, is the leading contender to take over at Peristeri.

South Melbourne vie for national championship

South Melbourne vie for national championship

It took just six minutes for South Melbourne to secure their win in Hobart. Photo: South Hobart FC.

After a great win away in Tasmania, South Melbourne will take on Adelaide club MetroStars SC this weekend in the NPL Finals Series.

Supporters will be coming out of the woodwork this weekend as South Melbourne hosts South Australian team MetroStars SC at Lakeside Stadium.

The Greeks sponsored team secured their semi-final spot in the NPL Finals Series in impressive fashion through a hard fought 1-0 win against South Hobart.

The team travelled to Hobart to meet last year’s NPL grand finalists and was joined by a couple hundred fans to boot.

It took just six minutes for South to secure their win, after captain Michael Eagar’s header hit the crossbar before the ball eventually set up a shot for Jamie Reed.

South Hobart battled hard to equalise but it wasn’t on the cards, playing a defensive play that kept the visitors at bay.

South Melbourne coach Chris Taylor applauded the home team and said the game could have gone differently if it wasn’t for the contribution of goalkeeper Chris Maynard.

“They’re a very good team who tried to play… on the break they looked to snatch the game at times but I thought that we also had a lot of chances as well,” he told smfc.com.au

Now the club has settled back into normal training routine at Lakeside Stadium and have been preparing to go up against MetroStars SC.

The club defeated NPL Western Australia’s Bayswater City FC 5-4 on penalties in Perth on the weekend following a 0-0 draw after normal and extra time.

Goal-keeper Daniel Godley was the hero, making a couple of stunning saves in the penalty shoot-out after the sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes.

The match will also provide a bit of state rivalry. Judging by the Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United match attendance, it’ll be a tense but boisterous match.

If South Melbourne win, the club will play the winner of Bonnyrigg White Eagles (NSW) v Palm Beach Sharks (QLD) in the grand final on October 4/5.

Sunday’s semi final will be streamed live by Football Federation Victoria (FFV) on YouTube (link to follow on FFV website), with the audio live on FFV Radio.

Greece hostile to enterprises

Greece hostile to enterprises

Horst Reichenback, European Commisions Task Force head in Greece.

EU Task Force in Greece report highlights problems.

Small and medium-sized enterprises in Greece have to pay three times as much in start-up costs compared with the European Union (EU) average, while despite an EU directive on state payment delays, the Greek state takes three times as long as the bloc average to make payments to companies, a report by Greek employer groups and the European Commission’s Task Force in Greece showed on Tuesday.

It is therefore no coincidence that as many as 200,000 SMEs vanished from the map within just three years, with the number of people employed in the sector dropping by more than 700,000.

The report added that the inherent problems of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship in Greece, such as the absence of innovation and an outward-looking character, combined
with the difficulty in gaining access to funding, the supply of a very small share of EU subsidies to entrepreneurs, the delays in disbursements and the complex bureaucratic system of licensing (despite recent improvements) have left SMEs particularly vulnerable to the crisis.

Task Force head Horst Reichenbach made particular reference to the 5.3 per cent annual decline in Greek bank loans to enterprises in March 2014.

Amphipolis tomb does not contain Alexander the Great remains

Amphipolis tomb does not contain Alexander the Great remains

The team is making new astonishing and stirring discoveries every day.

Lead archaeologist lays speculation to rest claiming the tomb doesn’t contain Alexander the Great.

The archaeologist leading the dig at the much-discussed ancient tomb of Amphipolis in Serres, northern Greece, laid to rest speculation that it may contain the remains of Alexander the Great.

“I hope that by Christmas, if not earlier, we will have some news,” Katerina Peristeri told Melbourne-based Greek community newspaper Neos Kosmos.

She added that the majestic tomb on Kasta Hill cannot possibly contain the remains of the great Macedonian general (325-300 BC), as it dates to after his death, in the latter quarter of the 4th century BC.

“We don’t know what else is in there, but such a monument has never been discovered before on a global scale,” Peristeri said. “We are making new astonishing and stirring discoveries every day,” she said as archaeologists explore two large chambers and clear the way for entry into a third.

Lady Gaga as Greek goddess

Lady Gaga as Greek goddess

Lady Gaga looked angelic in her outfit as a caryatid.

Pop songstress Lady Gaga has turned heads for all the good reasons, stepping out in Athens wearing a dress reminiscent of a caryatid.

Although popular for her outrageous outfits, while in Athens last week pop icon Lady Gaga took style inspiration from Athens’ architecture as she headed to the Olympic Stadium dressed as a caryatid, for a performance as part of her tour ArtRave: The Artpop Ball.

Emerging from her hotel, the 28-year-old looked angelic in a white gown and a jewelled headdress. Similar to the statues, which are used throughout Greek architecture in the place of columns or pillars, the Born This Way singer wore her blonde locks down in a braid while slipping into a sheer, flowing, layered chiffon gown.

The star made it no secret that she is a fan of ancient and modern Greece, as during the concert she draped the Greek flag around herself and made a brief reference to the crisis in Greece.

“If the Acropolis, Parthenon and all these amazing architecture monuments managed to survive, then you can survive!” the pop superstar screamed to her fans who cheered her on.

Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, who was among the thousands who gathered at the American pop star’s concert, said the fact that Lady Gaga sang while wearing the Greek flag and said such nice things about the Greeks and the country is very important.

The extravagant singer took to Instagram to share her ancient Greek look, posting two pictures of her outfit, with one of her captions reading: “Like many who inspired and came before us, tonight we put ART in the front.”

Match Preview: Liverpool vs Everton

imagesTULP06JZ

Roberto Martinez believes Everton and Liverpool head into the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday in similar shape after both teams have suffered stuttering starts to the season.

The 2013/14 campaign was a stellar one for both clubs, as Liverpool almost clinched their first Barclays Premier League title in 24 years, while Everton mounted a serious challenge for UEFA Champions League qualification before finishing fifth and settling for a place in the Europa League.

The 2014/15 season has not gone to plan so far, with Everton winning just once in their opening five top-flight encounters, while their city rivals have lost three of their matches to fall seven points behind leaders Chelsea at this early stage.

Ahead of Saturday’s encounter at Anfield, where Everton have not won since 1999 and were beaten 4-0 last season, Martinez believes both clubs are taking time to adjust with new-look squads and a more hectic schedule.

“Every team changes when you change personnel,” he said. “You need to find different ways of playing and there is a bit of adaptation with European football because we’re both going through the same period.

“It’s early in the season and it’s about adapting to those demands and having different players and new ways of playing because obviously Luis Suarez was very significant.

“The game is going to be exciting. This one is building up to being a very good game. It’s only three points, but three points that are very, very important for both sides.”

Martinez still has doubts over the fitness of Steven Pienaar (groin) and Seamus Coleman (head injury), but Bryan Oviedo made his first appearance since breaking a leg in January in Tuesday’s 3-0 Capital One Cup loss at Swansea City.

Arouna Kone was an unused substitute at Swansea after overcoming a knee problem, and the Ivory Coast forward is in contention again for the trip to Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees Saturday’s match as an opportunity for his side to put their inconsistent start to the campaign behind them.

“In the league, with us winning two games and losing three, it’s not ideal but there are still positives to take out of it,” he said.

“If I look at the corresponding games last season, there’s only a one point difference and we ended up doing OK. We know we need to be better. We know we need to improve our performance levels.

“The derby gives us an opportunity to do that. It provides a platform to go on a good, consistent run. Last season, we had a great spell after our win [in January].

“Everton are a good side, with very good players. They’re different to us, but they’ve got a lot of quality. They’ve probably not got the results they’ve wanted, but Roberto is an excellent manager.

“He’s done a great job there and being a derby game, it will be tough for us.”

Rodgers revealed on Thursday that Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) is nearing a return but remains a doubt, while Liverpool also have concerns over Joe Allen and Glen Johnson (both knee) as well as Jordan Henderson (hip) and Philippe Coutinho (groin).

Liverpool (from): Jones, Mignolet, Johnson, Jose Enrique, Lovren, Manquillo, Moreno, Sakho, Skrtel, Toure, Allen, Coutinho, Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Lucas, Markovic, Suso, Balotelli, Borini, Lambert, Sterling, Sturridge.

Everton (from): Howard, Joel, Stanek, Alcaraz, Baines, Browning, Coleman, Distin, Garbutt, Hibbert, Jagielka, Stones, Atsu, Barry, Besic, Gibson, Junior, McCarthy, McGeady, Osman, Oviedo, Pienaar, Eto’o, Kone, Long, Lukaku, McAleny, Mirallas, Naismith.
