New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called on conservative cadres to be on standby for a possible referendum or snap elections following the latest dramatic turn in the progress of negotiations between the government and the country’s creditors, Kathimerini understands.

During a session of the party’s political committee on Wednesday, Mitsotakis said Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras should resign rather than subject Greeks to another year of political turbulence.

“Mr Tsipras, if you are looking for a way out, quit now,” Mitsotakis said. “Don’t drag the country through new painful adventures in order to escape your own tragic dead end.”

“We won’t allow you to transform our country into a failed, third world nation which belongs to Europe only geographically,” he said.

Commenting on Wednesday, after Tsipras asked European Council President Donald Tusk to call a summit of eurozone leaders’ to discuss Greece’s bailout terms following a breakdown in talks between Athens and its creditors, ND’s spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos accused the government of “irresponsibility and a lack of credibility,” saying it had given creditors, and the International Monetary Fund in particular, “room to demand additional painful measures which are unacceptable to ND.”

In his speech on Wednesday, Mitsotakis said it was ND’s “primary duty” to “lead a large movement to remove the current dangerous government from power.”

Using particularly harsh language, he referred to “a wretched troupe that calls itself a government and comprises professional liars and populist megalomaniacs.”

In a related development, Cretan ND MP Lefteris Avgenakis was appointed the political committee’s new secretary. There was no vote as he was the only candidate for the post.

Some 380 unaccompanied minors remain in closed hot spots, detention centers and even on the streets, as a program to house them in rented apartments has yet to materialize due to staff shortages and despite increased funding by the European Union, authorities said on Wednesday.

According to reports, some 100 unaccompanied minors at the Moria hot spot on Lesvos will be transferred by Friday to a camp on the island under the supervision of NGOs Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF),  Save the Children and Metadrasi.

The Moria camp, which provides temporary shelter to 3,000 asylum seekers, was the site of violent clashes between migrants and riot police on Tuesday.

“It is a stopgap solution until accommodation facilities are organized,” a Labor Ministry official told the Kathimerini, adding that similar temporary solutions will be used to house minors from other detention centers such as Amygdaleza outside Athens, while by the end of May the National Center of Social Solidarity (EKA) plans to create infrastructure to house 200 minors.

According to the law, it is illegal to house minors at hot spots, which were set up to register and process migrants, and they should be moved to other reception centers.

Referring to the use of force by police to contain rioting migrants inside the Moria hot spot on Tuesday, Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas said it did not make him “proud” but “was necessary in light of the circumstances.”

The clashes, which left 24 people injured, began when young migrants started fighting each other and attempted to break out of the center, prompting police to fire rounds of tear gas.

“I saw a strictness which, however, was necessary,” Mouzalas said, referring to the use of force by riot police.

Mouzalas and his Dutch counterpart Klaas Dijkhoff were jeered by frustrated migrants on a visit there shortly before the riot broke out.

“We are worried. We are not proud. We’re not happy,” he said on Wednesday, insisting that Greece will treat asylum seekers according to the laws of the land and European Union dictates in the examination of their asylum applications.

The trouble began after reports surfaced suggesting that asylum applications were being rejected.

Authorities and aid groups have expressed growing concern about detaining migrants of different backgrounds in the same center for weeks on end, and fear that clashes between them are taking place along ethnic lines.

Mouzalas said he expects more unrest in the future and that it was up to authorities to find a way to deal with it.

Meanwhile, Greek police distributed leaflets on Wednesday in Arabic and English to migrants stranded at the Idomeni border camp in northern Greece, urging them to evacuate the sprawling camp and go to other centers, where they will be able to track the progress of their asylum applications and have better living conditions.

According to the government’s migration spokesman, Giorgos Kyritsis, 4,500 of them will be transferred to four buildings outside Thessaloniki within the next 10 days.

Once again, Greece is in a serious crisis, albeit one that was heralded months ago. The SYRIZA-Independent Greeks coalition government – and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in particular – has repeatedly claimed that it would not diverge from the terms of the deal struck in June 2015 on the basis of political criteria, with the International Monetary Fund giving its backing only reluctantly.

That “political solution” was the result of Tsipras reneging on almost every single promise he made to get into power in January 2015 and receive the support of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in exchange for acceding to the logic of the European system.

The IMF’s European chief, Poul Thomsen, in a telephone conversation with Delia Velculescu, current Fund mission chief in Greece, that was leaked last month, expressed his opposition – belatedly, of course – to that agreement and accused the Europeans of being too lenient toward Greece.

Thomsen idea was for Tsipras to be compelled to concede, as had happened repeatedly before, and for Merkel to be forced to fall in line with the IMF so that Greece would remain in the bailout program, as this is what the Bundestag had decided.

In some respects, Greece may well become the collateral damage of the disagreement between the Washington-based Fund and Berlin regarding the sustainability of the country’s debts and how this could be achieved.

That is what led to Thomsen’s proposal for a fourth memorandum in case the deal currently under negotiation fails. It seems that it is not just half the virgins that are foolish, to use a parable from the Bible, as it’s Holy Week.

Tsipras appears to be facing a mutiny, modern Kremlin watchers assure, which explains how the situation has become so politically dramatized in order to muster the support needed for the painful new deal from the government’s paper-thin parliamentary majority.

The prime minister asked for a meeting of the European Council but was told that the Eurogroup would have to convene first. Tsipras agreed and now the entire matter has been pushed back to after Easter so as not to upset the people’s holidays: everything in the service of political expediency in an agnostic society with apparent paganistic characteristics.

We do not know how the new crisis will unfold. That said, Tsipras will not hesitate to call an election or a referendum if some compromise is not reached and New Democracy’s demand that he be removed from power is satisfied. But, as things stand, woe betide the winner.

Fast forward two years and the now-landmark cafe goes through up to 15 kilograms every day.

Table 1 Espresso’s upwards trajectory reached a new high this week, when it won the New Business category at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards.

“It still hasn’t sunk in yet, it’s such a phenomenal feeling,” Mr James said.

“When they read out our name I could not move.

“I’m so thankful to our staff and customers  –  they have been the backbone to our success.”

Mr James, 39, grew up in Adamstown and saw his Greek immigrant parents Kerry and Maria operating a handful of restaurants, cafes and takeaway shops across the Hunter.

He dreamed of opening his own business for a decade and watched older brothers Peter and Harry open city favorites Blue Door and Harrys Schnitzel Joint respectively.

“It was the scariest decision I’ve ever made, but we’re all very competitive and they helped push me, drive me and gave me that will to get my foot over the line,” he said. 

“99 per cent of people told me when I opened they would not do it if it was them.”

Mr James started trading on City Road on May 8, 2014, and spent the next six months working 90 hours a week and sleeping only three hours each night.

After reluctantly spending two days in bed to recuperate, Mr James implemented a raft of changes including boosting staff numbers from three to 19, which helped to transform the 120-seat cafe to what it is today.

He plans to open a second cafe within the next year, but said its location was yet to be decided.

Mr James said he was one of the first in the region to capitalise on the idea of “food porn” and still regularly posts drool-worthy photos of dishes to get social media salivating.

The most popular item from the modern Australian menu is the eggs benedict, but the cafe is perhaps best known for its pancakes, waffles and scrumptious smoothies in flavours including Bounty, Snickers, Oreo and Crunchie.

“We don’t have a professional food stylist, we take the photos on our phones on site, as soon as the meals come out of the kitchen,” he said.

“Once we get the flavour right we focus on how we present the food.

“People eat with their eyes, then their mouths and taste buds.

“The first thing people do when we set the food down in front of them is get out their phones too.”

Table 1 Espresso now has almost 30,000 Facebook fans and more than 8000 Instagram followers from across the globe, including a strong contingent from the United States and some from as far away as Japan, Hong Kong and India.

Customers come from along the east coast, Fiji, New Zealand, the United States and Europe to taste the fare many have ogled from afar.

Mr James highly recommends prospective diners call ahead to reserve a table on weekends, which are often booked up to three weeks in advance.

The cafe was fully booked months ago to feed 240 people on Mothers Day, May 8.

“Nobody leaves here with an empty stomach,” Mr James said.

“In fact, a lot of the time they are in a food coma.”

It also cleaned up last September at the Savor Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence (Regional NSW), taking home both a social media and consumer vote award.

Pep Guardiola was unhappy with Bayern Munich’s performance in the 1-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Saul Niguez’s sublime individual goal gave Diego Simeone’s Atletico the first-leg advantage on Wednesday night, though Bayern did come close on several occasions in the second half.

Although Guardiola said the majority of Bayern’s performance was good, he bemoaned his side’s lack of fight for Niguez’s goal after the Spaniard skipped through three challenges before scoring.

“Their goal is a brilliant goal, but it’s our mistake,” said the Bayern boss. “We kept standing off. I’m not happy with how we played.

“It was a good game overall, but we started badly. The goal was a consequence of our slow play. We didn’t win even one battle.

“We created more than enough chances, 75 per cent of our performance was great.”

Guardiola, who will be leaving Bayern in the summer for Manchester City, still has hopes of progressing after the second leg in Munich on Tuesday, but says they must play with more intelligence at the Allianz Arena.

“We have to play more intelligently in the return match,” he added. “We need patience and we only need a goal to take the game to extra time.

“The result isn’t good. It makes the return tough but we still hope to make the final.”

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα υποστηρίζει ότι θα πρέπει να μειωθεί το ποσό που οι επενδυτές ακινήτων δικαιολογούν στην εφορία ως απώλεια.

O πρωθυπουργός Malcolm Turnbull, υποστηρίζει ότι ο ισχυρισμός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης ότι οι φορολογικές ελαφρύνσεις σε επενδύσεις ακινήτων ευνοούν κυρίως τους μεγαλοεισοδηματίες, είναι ανεδαφικές, χαρακτήρισε δε το σχέδιο περιορισμού των ελαφρύνσεων ως άδικο.

Πιο διεξοδικά, δήλωσε ότι είναι φυσικό οι έχοντες μεγάλο εισόδημα να έχουν και τα μεγαλύτερα κέρδη από επενδύσεις σε ακίνητα, για το λόγο ότι διαθέτουν μεγαλύτερα χρηματικά ποσά.

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα υποστηρίζει ότι θα πρέπει να μειωθεί το ποσό που οι επενδυτές ακινήτων δικαιολογούν στην εφορία ως απώλεια.

Ο πρωθυπουργός δήλωσε ότι “το σχέδιο της αντιπολίτευσης είναι άδικο, κακόβουλο και ανεύθυνο”, υποστηρίζοντας ότι οι εύποροι θα συνεχίσουν, ούτως ή άλλως, να δικαιολογούν απώλειες από άλλες επενδύσεις που έχουν.

“Είναι απλό” τόνισε.

“Εργαζόμενοι οι οποίοι έχουν ένα συγκεκριμένο εισόδημα, δεν είναι σε θέση να δικαιολογήσουν απώλειες και να τύχουν φοροελαφρύνσεων σε αντίθεση με τους εύπορους”.

«Δεν μεταβάλλεται η πολιτική της χώρας» δηλώνει ο Αυστραλός υπουργός Μετανάστευσης

Απόφαση-κόλαφο, η οποία είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την παγκόσμια κατακραυγή και μεγάλες κινητοποιήσεις εντός της χώρας, εξέδωσε δικαστήριο στην Παπούα Νέα Γουινέα, χαρακτηρίζοντας παράνομο το κέντρο κράτησης μεταναστών που διατηρεί η Αυστραλία στο Manus Island.

Η κυβέρνηση της Καμπέρας δέχθηκε διεθνή κριτική για την τακτική της, καθώς διατηρεί κέντρο κράτησης μεταναστών σε ξένο έδαφος, με άθλιες συνθήκες διαβίωσης, οι οποίες παραπέμπουν σε στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης. Σύμφωνα με το σκεπτικό του δικαστηρίου, παραβιάζονται κατάφορα τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα των κρατουμένων, ενώ μέσα στις στρατιωτικού τύπου εγκαταστάσεις, υπάρχουν και ανήλικα παιδιά.

Ο υπουργός Μετανάστευσης της Αυστραλίας, Πίτερ Ντάτον, δήλωσε ότι παρά την απόφαση του δικαστηρίου της Παπούα Νέας Γουινέας, δεν μεταβάλλεται η πολιτική φύλαξης των εξωτερικών συνόρων της χώρας. «Κανείς που επιχειρεί να εισέλθει παρανόμως στην Αυστραλία, δεν μπορεί να παραμείνει σε έδαφος της χώρας» τόνισε χαρακτηριστικά ο κ. Ντάτον. Όπως ενημέρωσε ο Αυστραλός υπουργός Μετανάστευσης, στο συγκεκριμένο κέντρο κράτησης βρίσκονται όσοι επιχείρησαν να εισέλθουν στην Αυστραλία από το νησιωτικό σύμπλεγμα της Παπούα Νέας Γουινέας.

Εκεί βρίσκονται περίπου 850 πρόσφυγες. «Το μόνο παράπτωμα αυτών των ανθρώπων είναι ότι επιχείρησαν να εισέλθουν παρανόμως στην Αυστραλία. Δεν μπορούν να κρατούνται για τόσο διάστημα αποκλεισμένοι σε ένα νησί» δήλωσε ο εκπρόσωπος της Οργάνωσης Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων

Για την κατασκευή στόλου 12 νέων υποβρυχίων στη Νότια Αυστραλία

Η Γαλλία νίκησε την Ιαπωνία και τη Γερμανία κερδίζοντας συμβόλαιο ύψους 50 δισ. δολαρίων Αυστραλίας για την κατασκευή στόλου 12 νέων υποβρυχίων για την Αυστραλία, όπως ανακοίνωσε ο πρωθυπουργός, Malcolm Turnbull.

Στο μεταξύ, η υπουργός Άμυνας, Marise Payne, δήλωσε ότι δεν προσπάθησε να κλείσει συνάντηση του συντρόφου της, Stuart Ayres, που είναι πολιτειακός υπουργός Εμπορίου Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας και της γαλλικής εταιρίας που κέρδισε το συμβόλαιο, καθώς έχει προκληθεί σχετικός θόρυβος.

Η νίκη της γαλλικής κρατικής εταιρίας DCNS Group σημαίνει ψήφο εμπιστοσύνης στην αμυντική βιομηχανία της Γαλλίας, αλλά και πλήγμα για την προσπάθεια του Ιάπωνα πρωθυπουργού, Σίνζο Άμπε, να αναπτύξει μια εξαγωγική αμυντική βιομηχανία.

Η Αυστραλία ενισχύει τις αμυντικές δαπάνες της στην προσπάθειά της να προστατεύσει τα στρατηγικά και εμπορικά της συμφέροντα στην περιοχή Ασίας-Ειρηνικού, την ώρα που οι ΗΠΑ και οι σύμμαχοί τους προσπαθούν να αντιμετωπίσουν την αυξανόμενη ισχύ της Κίνας.

Στο διαγωνισμό συμμετείχαν οι ιαπωνικές εταιρίες Mitsubishi Heavy Industries και Kawasaki Heavy Industries, η γαλλική DCNS και η γερμανική ThyssenKrupp.

Σύμφωνα με λίστα που δημοσιοποίησε η μεγαλύτερη σε επισκεψιμότητα ταξιδιωτική ιστοσελίδα στον κόσμο.

To κορυφαίο νησί στην Ευρώπη και το δεύτερο κορυφαίο στον κόσμο για το 2016 είναι η Σαντορίνη, σύμφωνα με σχετική λίστα που δημοσιοποίησε η ιστοσελίδα TripAdvisor. Ειδικότερα, η μεγαλύτερη σε επισκεψιμότητα ταξιδιωτική ιστοσελίδα στον κόσμο δημοσιοποίησε τα αποτελέσματα με τα καλύτερα νησιά σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο ανά ήπειρο και ανά χώρα, βάσει των κριτικών των χρηστών της. Στην παγκόσμια λίστα με τα 10 κορυφαία νησιά, την πρώτη θέση κατέλαβε το νησί Μάουι, τη δεύτερη η Σαντορίνη και την τρίτη η Τζαμάικα. Στην Ευρώπη, από τα 10 κορυφαία νησιά που περιλαμβάνει η σχετική λίστα τα τρία είναι ελληνικά. Την πρώτη θέση καταλαμβάνει η Σαντορίνη και ακολουθούν κατά σειρά προτίμησης η Μαγιόρκα, η Μαδέρα, η Κρήτη, η Τενερίφη, η Ρόδος, τα Κανάρια Νησιά, η Κορσική, το Τζέρσεϊ και το Κάπρι.

Στην κορυφή της ελληνικής λίστας με τα 10 κορυφαία νησιά βρίσκεται, επίσης, η Σαντορίνη και ακολουθούν η Κρήτη, η Ρόδος, η Μύκονος, η Ζάκυνθος, η Κέρκυρα, η Κεφαλλονιά, η Νάξος, η Σκιάθος και η Μήλος. Εξάλλου, η Κόκκινη Παραλία της Σαντορίνης περιελήφθη από το ταξιδιωτικό περιοδικό «Conde Nast Traveller» μεταξύ των πιο φωτογενών χρωματιστών παραλιών στον κόσμο. Να σημειωθεί ότι σε άλλη λίστα του TripAdvisor με τους 25 κορυφαίους προορισμούς στην Ευρώπη για το 2016 συμπεριλαμβάνεται και η Αθήνα. Την πρώτη θέση μεταξύ των κορυφαίων προορισμών τόσο στην ευρωπαϊκή όσο και στην παγκόσμια λίστα κατέλαβε το Λονδίνο
