A convicted rapist says he was the last person to see a mother-of-two before she disappeared from the small Victorian country town of Whorouly.

Michael Cardamone told Fairfax Media he was not involved with Karen Chetcuti’s disappearance, now the subject of a homicide squad investigation, but he was the last person to see her before she went missing.

“I don’t know what’s happened,” he said.

Mr Cardamone, who was released from jail last year after serving nine years for rape, lives around the corner from the 49-year-old month in the town of Whorouly, near Wangaratta.

Their properties share a boundary.

Mr Cardamone said he had invited Ms Chetcuti to his home to collect some tomatoes that he had grown and she was at his property from 8.40pm to 9.15pm on Tuesday.

“When she left here, she took off towards home,” he said.

He said the container of tomatoes she had taken was later found on a bench in Ms Chetcuti’s home.

Mr Cardamone was also interviewed by other media on Friday, telling them he had spoken to Ms Chetcuti over the fence at 9.15pm on Tuesday after he had been picking tomatoes.

Police searched parts of Mr Cardamone’s property on Friday and he said detectives had questioned him.

“I’m stressed out to the max, I haven’t been sleeping,” he said.

Mr Cardamone said he was being targeted because of his “incarceration”. He said investigators were welcome to search his home.

He said a white car had been seen leaving Ms Chetcuti’s home on Tuesday night, with her red car following behind. Her car was found burnt-out in Myrtleford, about 20 kilometres away, at 5.15am on Thursday.

Mr Cardamone said he saw Ms Chetcuti’s red car parked in a side street near the Target store in Myrtleford sometime before it was set alight.

It is understood another neighbour saw a white car leaving the Ms Chetcuti’s home on Tuesday night, but it is unclear as to what time.

Police said they were speaking to a number of people in relation to the disappearance.

Earlier on Friday, homicide squad detective Sergeant Sol Solomon said suspicions were raised about the disappearance when Ms Chetcuti did not turn up for work on Wednesday.

He said police checked her home and found the lights had been left on, and her handbag and wallet were still there. At that stage, her car was still missing.

“It certainly paints a picture of the involvement of a second party in her disappearance,” he said.

“There was no sign of any struggle or disturbance having occurred there.”

Ms Chetcuti, the mother of two teenagers, is well-known and liked in the Whorouly and Wangaratta area.

She had moved from Melbourne to Whorouly with her husband, who she is now separated from, to run the pub about two decades ago. The pair were publicans for about five years before Ms Chetcuti began working for the City of Wangaratta, where she had most recently been a records coordinator.

“Karen is a popular and valued member of staff,” City of Wangaratta chief executive officer Brendan McGrath said.

Friend Greg Haysom said Ms Chetcuti, who serves on a number of committees, is a “major part of Whorouly” and recently helped raise over $20,000 for the football club change rooms.

Mr Haysom described Ms Chetcuti as a “great mother” to her two children.

“I don’t think you will find anyone who would say a bad word about her, she has the most infectious smile,” he said.

Detectives asked anyone who saw Ms Chetcuti from Tuesday night, or her red Citroen, to come forward.

FISH are gasping for oxygen in the Hunter River for the second time in three years, and prawns are trying to “walk out of the water”, say witnesses.

Photos supplied to the Herald show lines of fish surfacing in the river at Hexham, or dead. The Environment Protection Authority on Thursday confirmed oxygen levels in the water had plunged to 0.1 milligrams per litre, where levels are normally between 6 and 8 milligrams per litre.

The low dissolved oxygen levels extend for more than 40 kilometres of the Hunter River, from Hinton to near Fern Bay, and the lower sections of the Williams and Paterson Rivers are also affected, the EPA said.

Further fish kills are expected because of low oxygen and high temperatures.

Την Δευτέρα όμως τα πράγματα δεν εξελίχθηκαν όπως τις άλλες φορές. Με την θερμοκρασία να βρίσκεται στην περιοχή κάπου στους 35 βαθμούς Κελσίου, οι λουόμενοι έφθασαν και πάλι κατά εκατοντάδες στο συγκεκριμένο αξιοθέατο, κάνοντας αυτό που ξέρουν: κολύμπι και φωτογραφίες.

Όμως οι Αρχές είχαν προειδοποιήσει για μεγάλα κύματα, περισσότερο του συνηθισμένου. Όπως όμως φάνηκε κανείς δεν άκουσε, και τα αποτελέσματα ήταν εξαιρετικά δυσάρεστα: Πάνω από 100 τραυματίες, οι περισσότεροι ελαφρά, και τουλάχιστον τρεις από αυτούς με πιο σοβαρά τραύματα που ανάγκασαν τις Αρχές να τους μεταφέρουν στο νοσοκομείο με ελικόπτερα.

Τα μεγάλα κύματα παρέσυραν τους ανθρώπους και τους χτύπησαν με δύναμη πάνω στα βράχια. Αν και αυτό αποτελεί μέρος της εμπειρίας, τα τελευταία γεγονότα αναγκάζουν τις Αρχές να σκέφτονται να κλείνουν το πάρκο όταν οι συνθήκες είναι αντίστοιχες.

Astrophysicists have identified the date the suitors of Penelope were killed

The date on which the mythical Odysseus killed the suitors of Penelope has been identified by a group of astrophysicists.
According to Kathimerini news, this new attempt at dating the Homeric epics compared physical events described in the epics with astronomical phenomena.
As a result, the dates of some events narrated in the epics are being specified, and a new concept for their historicity is being created, with the aim of shedding some more light on the Homeric question. “We believe that the myth revolves around actual events,” Panagiota Preka-Papadima, professor of astrophysics at the University of Athens, told Kathimerini.

The multidisciplinary team, which has publications in international journals, believes some of the events described did occur, and has proved that the natural phenomena mentioned coincide with the time of their narration.

“Odysseus arrived in Ithaca on 25 October, 1207BC. Five days later there was an eclipse with 75 per cent coverage in the Ionian sea, and it is precisely when the massacre of Penelope’s suitors took place,” says Papadima. She is entirely convinced of the truthfulness of the described event.

The occurrence of the solar eclipse at that time has been proven with maps by NASA, describing foreseeable natural phenomena from 4500BC to AD10,000.

“Between 1300BC and 1130BC, the years during which the two epics take place, there were 14 solar eclipses. Of the five that would have been visible in the Ionian, two of them had a rate of two per cent helium and therefore were not noticed. Another was west of the sun, so our concern is only with two,” explains Papadima.

A total solar eclipse took place in 1143BC, close to the decline of the Mycenaean centres and therefore excluded by the scientists. The second took place on 30 October, 1207BC, in the afternoon until 5.30 pm, reflected in The Odyssey.

In Rhapsody PC, The Odyssey’s 20th book, which recounts the events which unfold prior to the killing of the suitors, Theoclymenus says:

“Ah, wretched men, what evil is this that you suffer? Shrouded in night are your heads and your faces and your knees beneath you; kindled is the sound of wailing, bathed in tears are your cheeks, and sprinkled with blood are the walls and the fair rafters. And full of ghosts is the porch and full the court, of ghosts that hasten down to Erebus beneath the darkness, and the sun has perished out of heaven and an evil mist hovers over all.”

“This is an account of the eclipse, which hid three-quarters of the solar disc,” says Papadima.

She believes the date is fully consistent with the weather, the autumn agricultural life and the midday time of the suitors’ murder as described by Homer.

The multidisciplinary team investigating the epics comprises Professors S. Papamarinopoulos, P. Preka-Papadima, assistant professor of astrophysics at the University of Athens, and researchers P. Antonopoulos, natural and amateur astronomer; P. Mitropetro, philologist and teacher; E. Mitropetrou, philologist and archaeologist; A. Tsironi, philologist and archaeologist and C. Sarantitis, writer, electrical and mechanical.

Το Αυστραλιανό Συμβούλιο των Δημόσιων Οργανισμών αντέδρασε έντονα στις αλλαγές οι οποίες θα μειώσουν τα εισοδήματα των συνταξιούχων οι οποίοι κατέβαλαν μεγάλα ποσά στο superannuation στη διάρκεια του εργασιακού τους βίου. Κάλεσε δε τους συνταξιούχους να εκφράσουν τη δυσαρέσκειά τους στους πολιτικούς των εκλογικών τους εδρών. Ο πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου, Richard Griffiths, αμφισβήτησε την πρόθεση της κυβέρνησης να φέρει ισορροπία στις ανωμαλίες χορήγησης των συντάξεων.

Αλλά ο υπουργός Κοινωνικών Υπηρεσιών, Christian Porter, είναι πεπεισμένος ότι οι αλλαγές θα ωφελήσουν το σύνολο των συνταξιούχων και θα καταστήσουν πιο δίκαιο το καθεστώς χορήγησης των συντάξεων.

Πολλοί από αυτούς τους συνταξιούχους δεν είναι πλούσιοι και το μέσο ετήσιο εισόδημά τους είναι μόνο $27,550” συμπλήρωσε ο κ. Neal.

$2.500 έχασε ο κάθε εργαζόμενος της Αυστραλίας

Με οδυνηρές οικονομικές απώλειες για τους κατοίκους της Αυστραλίας ξεκίνησε το 2016.

Εκτιμάται ότι λόγω της κρίσης της κινεζικής οικονομίας που κλυδωνίζει και την παγκόσμια οικονομία, ο μέσος Αυστραλός είδε το superannuation του να μειώνεται κατά 2,5%. Δηλαδή κατά μέσον όρο έχασε 2.500 δολάρια.

Όσοι, μάλιστα, έχουν επιλέξει οι αποταμιεύσεις τους στο superannuation να επενδύονται σε υψηλού ρίσκου μετοχές, έχασαν ακόμα περισσότερα χρήματα.

Όμως δεν είναι μόνο οι απώλειες στο superannuation που έχουν επιπτώσεις στους κατοίκους της Αυστραλίας.

Η επιβράδυνση της κινεζικής οικονομίας εκτιμάται πως ενδέχεται να δημιουργήσει μια μαύρη τρύπα ύψους 20 δισεκατομμυρίων στον προϋπολογισμό της χώρας.

Αν η πρόβλεψη αυτή επαληθευτεί, τότε αυτό σημαίνει νέες περικοπές και υψηλότερη φορολογία για να περιορισθούν τα ελλείμματα.

Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που η κυβέρνηση Τέρνμπουλ εξετάζει το ενδεχόμενο αύξησης του φόρου Αγαθών και Υπηρεσιών, του γνωστού ως GST.

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα έχει ταχθεί εναντίον της αύξησης του φόρου του GST όπως υπογράμμισε το αρχηγός του, Μπιλ Σόρτεν, μετά την επιστροφή στα καθήκοντά του από τις διακοπές, ελπίζοντας ότι αυτό θα τον βοηθήσει να βελτιώσει τη δημοτικότητά του, η οποία εξακολουθεί να παρουσιάζει πτωτική τάση.

«Η αύξηση του GST από το 10% στο 15% είναι μια κακή ιδέα» λέει ο κ. Σόρτεν.

Αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα θα μπορέσει να ανατρέψει τυχόν αύξηση του φόρου αυτού που θα σημάνει ακριβότερα αγαθά αλλά και υπηρεσίες για όλους.

Δεδομένου της επιβράδυνσης της κινεζικής οικονομίας, η κυβέρνηση Τέρνμπουλ ίσως να μην έχει άλλη επιλογή από το να αυξήσει το GST για να κάνει ξανά τους προϋπολογισμούς πλεονασματικούς.

Σύμφωνα δε με οικονομικούς αναλυτές το κινεζικό Χρηματιστήριο φαίνεται ότι είναι αντιμέτωπο με ακόμα … χειρότερες μέρες. Και η Κίνα θα γεννήσει περαιτέρω αστάθεια για τους επενδυτές το 2016 και θα πλήξει την αυστραλιανή οικονομία ιδιαίτερα.

Οι επενδυτές, λένε οι αναλυτές, θα πρέπει να συνηθίσουν πάντως στην αστάθεια της κινεζικής αγοράς, και για να γίνει αυτό καλό θα ήταν να κατανοήσουν τι καθοδηγεί τις αγορές σήμερα.

Κατ’ αρχήν, όταν δημοσιεύονται κάποια αρνητικά δεδομένα,

οι φόβοι της επιβράδυνσης στην Κίνα εκτοξεύονται πέραν κάθε υπερβολής επειδή υπάρχει έλλειψη διαφάνειας σε σχέση με την κινεζική οικονομία. Τους επενδυτές δεν τους πειράζει η ασάφεια όταν οι οικονομίες αναπτύσσονται, αλλά ενοχλούνται έντονα όταν οι οικονομίες επιβραδύνουν. Όταν συμβαίνει αυτό, σκέφτονται πάντα το χειρότερο.

Ένα άλλο παράδειγμα είναι οι τιμές του πετρελαίου, οι οποίες μειώνονται εδώ και πάνω από έναν χρόνο. Συνήθως, οι επενδυτές αντιλαμβάνονται την πτώση των τιμών ως μια καλή είδηση για την οικονομική ανάπτυξη, καθώς το φτηνότερο πετρέλαιο σημαίνει ότι οι καταναλωτές μπορούν να ξοδέψουν περισσότερα σε άλλα πράγματα. Όμως, οι επενδυτές αναρωτιούνται κατά πόσο αυτή η πτώση των τιμών καθοδηγείται από την προσφορά ή τη ζήτηση. Στο βαθμό που οι επενδυτές πιστεύουν ότι η μείωση καθοδηγείται από τη ζήτηση, αυτό γίνεται αντιληπτό ως ένδειξη αποδυνάμωσης της ζήτησης στην Κίνα.

Ευρύτερα, η Κίνα βρίσκεται εν μέσω μιας μετάβασης, από μια οικονομία βασισμένη στις επενδύσεις σε μια οικονομία βασισμένη στην κατανάλωση, και αυτό δημιουργεί εμπόδια και δυσκολίες. Επιπλέον, η Κίνα προσπαθεί να κάνει τον καπιταλισμό να λειτουργήσει σε μια κομμουνιστική χώρα.

Thousands of Orthodox Christians turned out for Epiphany Day celebrations across the country last Sunday in the cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Melbourne’s blessing of the waters ceremony, traditionally observed on January 6, took place at Port Melbourne Pier.

A number of men boarded the Carolina Anne, the boat transporting the participants out into the bay, with 16-year-old Lucas Fraccaro from Essendon emerging soon after with the blessed cross in hand.

The ceremony was officiated by Bishop Ezekiel of Dervis with the assistance of Bishop Iakovos of Militoupolis and members of the clergy.

The festivities continued in Port Melbourne, with everyone gathering to enjoy a feast of Greek food, along with entertainment throughout the day with live music and performances by the Manasis Dancing School.

A number of state representatives made an appearance on the day, including Melbourne Ports MP Michael Danby; member for Albert Park Martin Foley; Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy; and the Consul General of Greece in Victoria, Christina Simantiraki.

The new agreement includes amended special zoning and spatial planning for the development of Astir Palace.

Greece’s privatisation agency said it signed a €400 million ($434.3 million) deal with Jermyn Street Real Estate Fund to sell Astir Palace, a luxury seaside resort outside Athens.

Greece’s top administrative court had blocked the sale of the Astir Palace hotel complex in March, saying the town planning scheme that Greece submitted violated Greek law, as the construction of a large number of residential buildings would harm the natural and urban environment.

“Jermyn Street Real Estate Fund has signed the new agreement to submit the amended special zoning and spatial plan for the development of Astir Palace,” the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) said.

The fund represents investors from Turkey, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait and other emirates.

The agency said the agreement ensured that the fund’s development plan for the resort was adjusted to the court’s opinion.

“The whole process is expected to be completed within the first half of 2016,” HRADF said.

The agency is expected to cash in about €100 million from the deal. The rest of the proceeds will go to National Bank, Greece’s largest lender, which owns about 85 per cent of the resort.

Privatisations have been a key condition of Greece’s international bailouts since 2010, but its state asset sales scheme has produced poor revenues due to bureaucratic delays and lack of political will.

So far, Athens has raised only about €3.5 billion from state asset sales versus an original target of €50 billion.

Unlikely alliance says specialised disease will transform rivers and protect native fish species after exponential growth in numbers of the European invader.

Conservationists and recreational fishers have joined forces to support the release of a specialised herpes virus targeting carp in the Murray river.

Scientists at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation have been testing the koi herpes virus in Australian native fish species, birds, amphibians and other animals found along the river for seven years to see if it is safe to release into the ecosystem.

“The virus doesn’t cause disease in any species that we have looked at,” said Dr Ken McColl, the project’s lead researcher. “It doesn’t even seem to multiply in other species. We are very confident that it’s only going to affect carp.”

The virus affects the fish’s skin and kidneys, which control its water balance. It spreads from direct carp-to-carp contact and takes about seven days to have a noticeable effect. Once the carp is visibly sick it usually dies within 24 hours.

“The virus comes along and makes a mess of those tissues and the carp basically drowns,” McColl said.

He said it was genetically unrelated to other herpes viruses, including those that affect humans, but was similar in affect and structure. “Virtually every species have their own specific herpes virus and very few of those viruses cross into other species,” he said.

In Europe, where the virus was discovered in the late 1990s, the result was piles of dead fish at carp fisheries. By 2004 the disease had spread to wild rivers in Britain, threatening the angling industry, which relies heavily on carp.

But McColl said the virus typically spread slowly down river systems, which would allow for the Murray to be cleaned of dead fish as it moved along. “We’ve even had some inquiries from commercial operations looking to collect the dead carp for use in fertilisers,” he said.

European carp were introduced to Australia in the 1800s but did not become a problem until the 1950s, when a species used in carp farms in Europe found its way into the river system. The carp population increased exponentially and the bottom-feeding fish, which is neither fished recreationally nor eaten in Australia, has been compared to rabbits in its effect on the environment.

“It’s said that they make up up to 90% of the fish biomass in parts of the Murray-Darling basin and, with that sort of population intensity, there’s not much chance for our native fish species,” McColl said.

“The main problem is the way they feed. They sort of rip plants out of the river bed and they make the water very muddy so that the plants can’t grow back and the native fish can’t breed.”

The acting campaign director for the Australian Conservation Foundation, Jonathan La Nauze, said half of the native fish in the Murray-Darling basin were listed as vulnerable or threatened, in large part because of carp numbers.

The ACF has formed an unlikely alliance with the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation, the Invasive Species Council, the National Farmers’ Federation and the National Irrigators Council to push for the release of the virus.

“We are united in calling for clearer, healthier waterways and fish communities,” La Nauze said. “Australia now has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to achieve this through broad-scale biological control using a naturally occurring virus that is specific to common carp.”

Allan Hansard, the managing director of the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation, said it was a “tremendous opportunity to transform our rivers”.

A proposal is being prepared for government approval by the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre in Canberra.
