untitled

Steve Georganas κ.ά.

Crushing punishment on Panathinaikos over fan violence

flare_on_finnbogason_web--2-thumb-large

Panathinaikos was on Monday deducted three points by the Greek Super League for fan violence before the recent Athens derby with Olympiakos which had to be called off before kick-off.

Panathinaikos was also fined 190,000 euros and instructed to play four home matches behind closed doors, while the league handed Olympiakos a 3-0 victory for the disrupted match.

The deduction means that Panathinaikos, who has the right to appeal, now sits in fifth place with 19 points, 17 points behind league leaders Olympiakos.

Referee Andreas Pappas made the decision to call off the match on November 21 after taking into account the violence both inside and outside the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.

Immediately after the decision was announced to the spectators, dozens of fans rushed onto the pitch and fought with riot police.

Police said 14 arrests were made and that three police officers were injured, one seriously.
Tear gas was used by police to bring order and the stadium suffered serious damage at the hands of the unruly crowd.

Two hours before the scheduled kick-off unruly Panathinaikos fans fought with police outside the stadium.

Fans threw rocks and other debris at police who in turn responded with tear gas to put a halt to the violence after 10 minutes.

Police also clashed briefly with fans inside the stadium near the players’ entrance tunnel.

The appearance of the visiting Olympiakos players on the pitch then prompted four flares to be thrown towards them by fans.

Olympiakos vice-president Savvas Theodoridis told the Greek TV network Nova, which was broadcasting the match live, that “the new law is clear, the match should not be played. We do not play in a jungle”.

Theodoridis said flares thrown by the fans during the warm-up struck Olympiakos forward Alfred Finnbogason, “burning” the Iceland international’s hand, and Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojevic.

Aris stuns AEK leaving Panathinaikos alone unbeaten in Basket League

aek_aris_web-thumb-large

AEK’s unbeaten run in the Basket League came to an abrupt end on Saturday as the Athens side went down at home to an ever-improving Aris, leaving Panathinaikos as the only undefeated team in basketball’s top flight.

Aris won 83-74 in Athens and is now on two losses in eight games, while AEK is on one loss, same as Olympiakos, that defeated host Kavala 71-57 on Sunday showing that its defense is growing better and better every week.

Panathinaikos was pushed all the way by promoted Lavrio on Monday, but the host eventually succumbed to the Greens with a 79-72 final score and Panathinaikos captain Dimitris Diamantidis making it 500 games in the top flight.

PAOK showed it is well on the path of recovery downing Arkadikos 74-54 at home, as Korivos Amaliadas stayed on fifth seeing off visiting Rethymno 83-79.

Apollon Patras’s great start to the game at Kifissia was just about enough to see it beat its host 82-79 in northern Athens, and Trikala got the better of Kolossos Rhodes at home winning 89-86.

The match between Panathinaikos and PAOK, postponed since November 23, has been rescheduled for December 14.

Greek Community announces 2015 AGM

President Bill Papastergiadis announces he will run again

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) has announced it will conduct its Αnnual General Meeting (AGM) in December.

Among a list of agenda items, the AGM will consider names of candidates for its new board, as well as reports from the president and treasurer.

Current president Bill Papastergiadis told Neos Kosmos he will be running for his position again, along with a board made up largely by current members, and said he was pleased with the organisation’s fiscal figures, despite it being without an income for two years.

“We’ve got an accounting profit of about $5 million but in my view what it should reveal … if you strictly look at the figures we’re running at a slight loss last year, which we foreshadowed,” he said.

“We’ve got a loss of about a $200,000 figure, which is lower than we expected, but it’s lower because of the extraordinary efforts that we’ve all put in in terms of fundraising and also cost-cutting during a period when the Greek Community has been without any income.”

With the GOCMV’s new Lonsdale Street building largely leased, Papastergiadis expects the Community to be profitable within a short period.

He also paid tribute to the organisations who have supported the Community over the last two years.

“Well over 50 organisations have made a number of donations to us, which demonstrates the solidarity within the Greek community generally and also their confidence in our organisation and its leadership and their respect towards the organisation as well.”

Active AGM participants are required to have been members of the GOCMV for a period of not less than six months.

Greece: top spot for Aussies

imagesFRQAASW4

While Greece enjoys record numbers of tourists, it still hasn’t reached its potential.

Despite hardships brought about by the economic crisis, Greece is not expecting to see tourism slow down any time soon.

According to figures released by travel booking site Webjet Australia, Greece has emerged as the top destination for Australian travellers.

The findings were based on the growth of bookings from January to August 2014, and the same period in 2015, with the site noting a 162 per cent increase.

Along with Greece, Spain (107 per cent) and Italy (91 per cent) also emerged as top choices.

Although Greece has always been a popular travel destination for Aussies, namely during the warmer months, Webjet Australia’s chief executive John Guscic partly attributes the growth to cost efficiency.
“With improved connections worldwide from ports like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it is now much easier, direct and cost-effective for Australians to travel to Europe,” Mr Guscic said.

And it seems to be in Greece’s interest to see high numbers of Aussies, with the average tourist from Australia spending €1,420 (AU$1,820) – more than any other nation, followed by Canadians (€1,207), Americans (€1,098) and Russians (€1,005).

Considering that Greece doesn’t spend a cent promoting itself Down Under, what can the dramatic increase be attributed to?

According to the former Victorian Minister for Tourism, John Pandazopoulos, there are two reasons, one of which he says is the Greek diaspora responding to the plight of Greece through social media.
“Those of us who have got Facebook, we all end up promoting different aspects of Greece – the attractions, the islands, the interesting things to see and do – and that’s having an effect,” said Mr Pandazopoulos.

“We are the third biggest Greek community in the world, and on principal, Australians see us Greeks as a professional business community and good hard working people. They like the Greek image and that all adds up.”

Couple that with the ANZAC Centenary, and the increased coverage surrounding the role of Lemnos during the campaign, and the figures make sense.

“Australians are travellers to Anzac sites, as we know with Gallipoli and the western front.
“We’ve just had three cruise ships full of Australians over the summer period in Greece going to Lemnos, and more are choosing to experience the rest of Greece, while doing the ANZAC pilgrimage,” said Mr Pandazopoulos.

This year Greece experienced a record number of tourists with 25 million people, resulting in revenue of 15.5 billion euros. But according to the former Tourism Minister, the country has yet to fulfil its true tourism potential.

While Greece is celebrated for its pristine beaches, fresh seafood, and friendly locals, that results in a busy summer, but what about the rest of the year?

“It’s all about focusing on all-year-round travel. Why do Constantinople, Rome and Venice have all year-round tourism and Greece doesn’t? Why does Venice have more tourists than Greece all-year-round? There are no beaches. It shows you when looking at figures that Greece has huge potential,” with opportunities to promote and bring to people’s attention rural areas of Greece with a point of difference.

“The reason people travel is because they feel they have some kind of association. So when people go to Mykonos or Santorini they feel some association because they’ve seen it so many times. What’s going to grab their interest to convert their interest into actually doing the travel?”

Five unlikely title challenges from Premier League history

laurent-robert-newcastle-manchester-united_3383527

With Claudio Ranieri’s men only kept off top spot on goal difference, Leicester City supporters find themselves dreaming of an improbable title.

Most recall Newcastle’s near-miss with Kevin Keegan in 1995/96 and Brendan Rodgers’ brush with glory as Liverpool manager in 2013/14, but theirs aren’t the only stories.

From Norwich’s run in the inaugural Premier League to Newcastle’s oft-forgotten run under Sir Bobby Robson, there have been numerous surprise sojourns at the top of the table.

Here, we remember five unlikely challenges that excited the neutrals…

Norwich – 1992/93

Norwich had a fine side in the late 1980s and famously beat Bayern Munich over two legs with the help of Jeremy Goss’s stunning volley. But the closest they came to a league title during this period was in the first ever Premier League season under new boss Mike Walker.

By that stage, having sold star striker Robert Fleck in the summer, some were even tipping the Canaries for relegation. However, they defied those odds in emphatic fashion, beginning with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Arsenal at Highbury.

It was the start of a strange sequence of results that saw improbable victories interspersed with heavy defeats. There was a 7-1 loss at Blackburn and a 4-1 reverse at Liverpool. Incredibly though, Norwich were eight points clear at the top of the table by the start of December.

They were still top on Christmas Day despite having a negative goal difference and a good run in March ensured they went into the crunch clash with Manchester United in early April as the form team with a slight advantage at the top of the table.

United were on a four-game winless run, while Norwich had won four of the last five. It counted for little. The visitors scored three times at Carrow Road before the midway point of the first half in a 3-1 win and the momentum was lost. Four days later, Norwich were thrashed 5-1 at Tottenham.

Any disappointment was masked by the thrill of the chase. After all, Norwich rallied sufficiently to edge out Blackburn and hold on to third spot – enough to bring European football back to the club. Walker got the Everton job the following year but neither he nor Norwich had it quite so good again.

Aston Villa – 1998/99

Few clubs have made better starts to a Premier League season than Aston Villa in 1998/99. John Gregory’s side finished October with 22 points from 10 games and remained unbeaten. They even bolstered the squad at that stage too, signing Dion Dublin from Coventry at the start of November.

Dublin’s impact was immediate. There was a brace in a debut win over Tottenham and a hat-trick as Southampton were seen off at The Dell. The striker made it seven in three with another two against Liverpool but the 13th game proved unlucky as the Reds won 4-2 to end the unbeaten run.

Not that it was the end of Villa’s challenge. In fact, a win over Sheffield Wednesday meant that they saw in the New Year as the Premier League leaders, albeit with a host of clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Leeds and West Ham all close on their tails.

The collapse was remarkable. Stan Collymore had scored in Dublin’s debut game in November but that was to be his last league goal of the campaign. The entire team managed only five goals in nine games between January and April, winning none of them.

Ultimately, Gregory’s first full season in charge ended with Villa in sixth spot. They’ve matched that finish five times in the years since but never bettered it – and certainly never been closer to mounting an unlikely tilt at the Premier League title.

Ipswich – 2000/01

Having been promoted after finishing third in the second-tier the previous season, Ipswich were expected to return from whence they came soon after. As it turned out, they were relegated in their second season in the top flight. But only after an extraordinary year under George Burley.

Playing a 3-5-2 formation that seemed to trouble much of the division, Ipswich thrived. Only Chelsea’s Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored more Premier League goals than Marcus Stewart, while the likes of Richard Wright and Matt Holland made names for themselves too.

Burley’s team actually took time to adjust, losing three of their first five, but went on to win nine out of 13 games in a run that took them into the top three. They proved particularly tricky opponents away from home during this period, winning at Leeds, Everton, Manchester City and Liverpool.

While few regarded it as a title challenge, Ipswich travelled to Old Trafford two days before Christmas knowing that a win would move them to within four of the league leaders as their nearest rivals. As it was, United had too much for the visitors and ran out 2-0 winners.

Much as their rivals Norwich had found to their cost eight years earlier, Ferguson’s team were far too strong in the run in. But there was no dramatic collapse from Ipswich. They were still third with three games to go only to lose at Charlton and draw at Derby.

In the end, a fifth-place finish was enough to secure a UEFA Cup adventure the following season that would take in a trip to the San Siro. Unfortunately, changes of formation and personnel meant the magic could not be repeated in the league and the relegation many predicted came one year on.

Newcastle – 2001/02

Newcastle had been bottom of the Premier League when Sir Bobby Robson took over in 1999 and finished outside the top 10 in his first full season in charge. But it all came together in the 2001/02 season as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

It threatened to be even better than that. Robson freshened up his forward options in the summer with the additions of Craig Bellamy and Laurent Robert, and both were quick to make an impact – Bellamy in the Tyne-Wear derby and Robert with the opener in a 4-3 win over Manchester United.

Once again, Newcastle’s tag as ‘the entertainers’ rang true. They put four past Middlesbrough, Bolton and Leeds – all away from home – while proving their unpredictability by also losing convincingly against West Ham and Fulham.

But five wins on the bounce in December, including a 3-1 win at Arsenal thanks to late goals from Alan Shearer and the mercurial Robert, suggested the consistency had been found. At Christmas, they boasted a three-point lead over Liverpool and the Gunners at the top of the Premier League.

Back-to-back defeats to Chelsea and United might have ended Newcastle’s hopes but by the time that Nikos Dabizas headed in the only goal of the game at Sunderland in late February, Robson’s side were back in second spot. In fact, they were two points behind United with a game in hand.

However, it was Arsenal that they needed to worry about. Arsene Wenger’s team won at St James’ Park in the very next game as part of an incredible run of 13 straight Premier League victories. By then, the table looked emphatic. In truth, Newcastle had been in the hunt well into the spring.

Tottenham 2011/12

Tottenham had two points from eight games when Harry Redknapp took over in 2008. He soon turned it around. But his Spurs side were bottom again in 2011 having been thrashed 3-0 by Manchester United and 5-1 at home to Manchester City in their opening two games.

This time the turnaround was arguably even more impressive. Having signed Rafael van der Vaart on transfer deadline day, Redknapp’s men went on to win nine of the next 10 games, including a 2-1 victory in the North London derby courtesy of Kyle Walker’s second-half strike.

Spurs continued the momentum through the winter and a 2-0 home win over Everton in January lifted them level on points with second-placed United and just three points behind leaders City – some achievement given the apparent gulf in the opening weeks of the campaign.

A 3-2 defeat to City later that month dented any hopes of an unlikely title bid but the high point of the season was yet to come. Cleared of tax evasion charges earlier in the week, Redknapp celebrated by overseeing a scintillating 5-0 win over Newcastle in February.

With Luka Modric and Gareth Bale to the fore, it was emblematic of the sort of fast-paced and exciting football that Redknapp had restored at White Hart Lane. It also appeared to be a send-off with Fabio Capello having resigned as England boss just days earlier.

Instead, Roy Hodgson got the job and Tottenham’s season fizzled out. They won only one of the next nine and though there was an upturn in form to fend off Newcastle’s bid for fourth, even that proved to be in vain – Chelsea’s Champions League win denying them a return to that competition.

Is Turkey buying oil smuggled by Islamic State?

6991784-3x2-700x467

A war of words has broken out between Russia and Turkey over accusations that Turkey is buying oil smuggled by Islamic State (IS).

Russian president Vladimir Putin has accused Turkey of shooting down a Russian warplane last week out of a desire to protect these oil supply lines.

“At the moment we have received additional information confirming that oil from the deposits controlled by Islamic State militants enters Turkish territory on an industrial scale,” he said on the sidelines of the climate change summit in Paris.

“We have every reason to believe that the decision to down our plane was guided by a desire to ensure security of this oil’s delivery routes to ports where they are shipped in tankers.”

Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan has attacked the claims as slander, and said if there was proof that Turkey was co-operating with IS he would resign.

“We are not that dishonest as to buy oil from terrorists. If it is proven that we have, in fact, done so, I will leave office,” he was quoted by Russia’s TASS news agency as saying.

“If there is any evidence, let them present it, we’ll consider [it].”

So is there evidence Turkey is buying oil smuggled by IS?

It is no secret that IS rakes in a fortune from oil fields it now controls in Syria and Iraq. A US treasury official recently told a security conference in Aspen that IS brought in $500 million a year in oil revenues.

“Earlier this year [IS] made about $40 million in one month off of the sale of oil. So if you want to extrapolate that out, you can get to about $500 million in the course of a year, and this is all internally generated,” David Glaser, assistant secretary of the US treasury for terrorist financing, said.

Security analysts say Western black market exists for IS oil

In September 2015, IS seized the last major oilfield under Syrian government control in a desert area north-west of the ancient city of Palymra and a region that holds Syria’s main natural gas fields and multi-million dollar extraction facilities.

Since taking control of key areas of Syria and Iraq last year, IS has developed an illicit trade in oil sales.

Buyers are readily found in the West and tanker trucks are permitted to reach ports where oil tankers are waiting to load it.

Dr Norman Bailey, Haifa University’s Centre for National Security Studies and Geostrategy

Many security analysts believe there is a huge black market for IS oil in the West.

“Islamic State’s barbaric conquests are financed by collaborators among the business and financial circles of the West,” wrote Dr Norman Bailey, of the Centre for National Security Studies and Geostrategy at Haifa University in Israel.

“Buyers are readily found in the West and tanker trucks are permitted to reach ports where oil tankers are waiting to load it.

“All this requires ready, willing and able collaborators among the business and financial circles of the West as well as surrounding countries.”

Dr Bailey was reluctant to name the ports or countries involved.

“This is not the place to name names, but the buyers and the facilitators and the financiers are not that difficult to identify, so that if the opponents of Islamic State were really serious about doing something about it, along with the occasional bombing raid, the IS could be starved of funds,” he wrote.

Turkish opposition politician claimed IS smuggled $800m of oil

In June 2014, a member of Turkey’s parliamentary opposition, Ali Edibogluan, claimed that IS had smuggled $800 million worth of oil into Turkey from Syria and Iraq, according to the Al Monitor website.

He cited oil fields at Rumaila in northern Syria and others near Mosul in Iraq, saying that IS had laid pipes allowing it to “transfer the oil to Turkey and parlay it into cash”.

“Turkey’s cooperation with thousands of men of such a mentality is extremely dangerous,” he said, according to the Al Monitor report.

“Similar pipes exist also at [the Turkish border regions of] Kilis, Urfa and Gaziantep … they take the oil from the refineries at zero cost.

“Using primitive means, they refine the oil in areas close to the Turkish border and then sell it via Turkey.”

Now, a former Iraqi member of parliament has backed up those claims.

“In the last eight months [IS] has managed to sell what is $800 million worth of oil in the black market of Turkey. This is Iraqi oil and Syrian oil, and these are carried by trucks from Iraq, from Syria, through the borders to Turkey and sold … [at] less than 50 per cent of the international oil price,” Mowaffak al Rubaie said in an interview with the Russian channel RT.

“It has always been sold in the region of $21-22 for the barrel.

“Now this either gets consumed inside, the crude is refined on Turkish territory by the Turkish refineries, and sold in the Turkish market. Or it goes to Jihan and then in the pipelines from Jihan to the Mediterranean and sold to the international market.

“Money and dollars generated by selling Iraqi and Syrian oil on the Turkish black market is like the oxygen supply to [IS] and its operation.

“Once you cut the oxygen then [IS] will suffocate.”

‘No shadow of a doubt’ Turkey knew about smuggling

The former Iraqi MP said there was “no shadow of a doubt” that the Turkish government knew about the smuggling operations.

“The merchants, the businessmen [are buying oil] in the black market in Turkey under the noses, under the auspices if you like, of the Turkish intelligence agency and the Turkish security apparatus,” he told RT.

Mr Rubaie also accused Turkey of providing medical treatment to IS terrorists in Turkish hospitals along the border with Syria and even in “Istanbul itself”.

“There are security officers who are sympathising with [IS] in Turkey,” he said.

“They are allowing them to go from Istanbul to the borders and infiltrate … Syria and Iraq.

“There is no terrorist organisation which can stand alone, without a neighbouring country helping it — in this case Turkey.”

The Iraqi politician urged Turkey to come clean and join the international efforts to destroy IS.

The Russian news outlet said Mr Putin himself noted that it was “hard to believe, but is theoretically possible” that the Turkish leadership knew nothing about oil flowing into Turkey illegally.

“Vehicles, carrying oil, lined up in a chain going beyond the horizon,” Mr Putin reportedly said as he compared the views seen by Russian pilots and drones to a “living oil pipe” stretching from IS and rebel-controlled areas in Syria into Turkey.

“Day and night they are going to Turkey. Trucks always go there loaded, and back from there — empty.”

The RT website has photographs that appear to show aerial photographs of rows of trucks near the Turkish-Syrian border.

Turkey’s president Mr Erdogan has called claims that Turkey buys oil from IS “slander”.

“I will say something very strong here. If such a thing is proven, the nobility of our nation would require that I would not stay in office,” he said.

“The countries from which Turkey buys oil are well known.”

Russia has imposed a series of economic and trade sanctions against Turkey in retaliation to the decision to shoot down the Russian war plane.

Australian Government urged to take action on car-making

A parliamentary inquiry has urged the federal government not to give up on Australia’s car manufacturing industry.

The Labor-dominated committee tabled its final report in the Senate on Tuesday, recommending the government set up an automotive industry taskforce bringing together industry, unions and government to develop a national automotive policy framework.

“We must not give up on automotive manufacturing in this country,” independent senator Nick Xenophon told parliament, adding 200,000 jobs will be lost if no action is taken.
