Σε επιφυλακή βρίσκονται οι Αρχές, έχοντας στο στόχαστρο 200 υπόπτους, προειδοποιώντας παράλληλα για τους κινδύνους της αντιμουσουλμανικής υστερίας.

Όχι στην “αντι-ισλαμική” υστερία λένε οι Αρχές ασφάλειας της Αυστραλίας, καλώντας τους πολίτες να διατηρήσουν την ψυχραιμία τους, καθώς η ρητορική μίσους μπορεί να έχει ανυπολόγιστες αρνητικές συνέπειες, καθώς δυσχεραίνουν σημαντικά το έργο τους και λειτουργούν προς όφελος των τζιχαντιστών.

Σε μία δήλωση ιδιαίτερης σημασίας, ο επικεφαλής των υπηρεσιών πληροφοριών, Duncan Lewis, τόνισε πως το έργο των αρχών στηρίζεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό στην συνεργασία και την σχέση εμπιστοσύνης με την ευρύτερη μουσουλμανική κοινότητα και τις κατά τόπους παροικίες στο Σίδνεϊ και την Μελβούρνη. Αν, για οποιονδήποτε λόγο, οι κοινότητες αυτές νιώσουν αποκομμένες από το κυρίως σώμα της Αυστραλιανής κοινωνίας, κίνδυνος που εμφανίζεται ιδιαίτερα έντονος τον τελευταίο καιρό, με τις δημόσιες τοποθετήσεις πολλών και την όξυνση της αντιμουσουλμανικής ρητορικής, αυτό θα επηρεάσει αρνητικά τις όποιες προσπάθειες των αρχών να εντοπίσουν και να αντιμετωπίσουν τους θύλακες τρομοκρατίας στην χώρα. “Πρέπει να είμαστε ψύχραιμοι και να ενεργούμε έξυπνα, ως κοινωνία”, δήλωσε.

“Συνεργαζόμαστε στενά με την ισλαμική κοινότητα προκειμένου να διασφαλίσουμε το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα που είναι η ασφάλεια για την χώρα”. Ο ίδιος απέρριψε ως ανυπόστατη την αντίληψη ότι η Μουσουλμανική θρησκεία υποθάλπει ή υποστηρίζει τον ισλαμικό εξτρεμισμό, τονίζοντας ότι το να υποστηρίζει κάποιος αυτήν την θέση για την θρησκεία κάποιου άλλου αποτελεί σοβαρή βλασφημία. Οι δηλώσεις του έρχονται να αντιπαρατεθούν με εκείνες του πρώην πρωθυπουργού, Tony Abbott, ο οποίος την περασμένη εβδομάδα δήλωσε ότι όλοι οι πολιτισμοί δεν είναι ίδιοι και ότι “δεν μπορούμε να παραμένουμε σε άρνηση απέναντι στο τεράστιο πρόβλημα που ενυπάρχει στο Ισλάμ”.

ΙΜΑΜΗΣ ΥΠΕΡ ΤΗΣ ΘΑΝΑΤΙΚΗΣ ΠΟΙΝΗΣ

Την ίδια στιγμή, εκτός από τον πρώην πρωθυπουργό, σκληρή γλώσσα απέναντι στο φαινόμενο της τρομοκρατίας υιοθετούν και κάποιοι θρησκευτικοί ηγέτες της μουσουλμανικής κοινότητας στην Αυστραλία. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η δήλωση του Dr. Hassan Majzoub, ενός από τους πλέον σεβάσμιους ιμάμηδες της Αυστραλίας, με διδακτορικό στις ισλαμικές σπουδές, ο οποίος κάλεσε για την επαναφορά της θανατικής ποινής στην χώρα, για την τιμωρία όσων εμπλέκονται σε τρομοκρατικές ενέργειες προκαλώντας τον θάνατο. Τονίζοντας πως το Ισλάμ θεωρεί τον φόνο τεράστια αμαρτία που τιμωρείται με θάνατο, κάλεσε τις κατά τόπους μουσουλμανικές κοινότητες να διαδώσουν αυτό το μήνυμα προς νουθεσία των νέων ανθρώπων που πέφτουν θύματα εξαπάτησης, θεωρώντας ότι οι τρομοκρατικές ενέργειες που διαπράττουν γίνονται στο όνομα της θρησκείας.

“Το Ισλάμ λέει ότι όποιος διαπράττει φόνο είναι καταραμένος. Η θανατική ποινή θα λειτουργήσει αποτρεπτικά” δήλωσε ο Dr. Majzoub, ο γιος του οποίου σκοτώθηκε στην Συρία, όπου είχε αναλάβει ανθρωπιστική δράση.

Η δήλωση του ιμάμη βρήκε υποστηρικτή στο πρόσωπο του πρώην ανώτατου μουφτή της Αυστραλίας, Seikh Taj din al-Hilali, ο οποίος δήλωσε: “Πιστεύω ότι πρέπει να εφαρμόσουμε ισχυρά αποτρεπτικά νομικά μέσα εναντίον οποιουδήποτε έχει τρομοκρατικές προθέσεις. Η θανατική ποινή θα λειτουργούσε αποτρεπτικά για το όλο και πιο συχνό φαινόμενο του φόνου”. Αντίθετη με αυτήν την αντίληψη εμφανίστηκε η καθηγήτρια Anne Azza Aly, ειδική σε ζητήματα τρομοκρατίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Edith Cowan, η οποία δήλωσε ότι η επαναφορά της θανατικής ποινής δεν θα απέτρεπε την τρομοκρατία, αντιθέτως όμως θα ήταν οπισθοχώρηση για την Αυστραλία που είναι ένα έθνος που έχει προοδεύσει.

200 ΑΤΟΜΑ ΥΠΟ ΠΑΡΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΗΣΗ

Η συζήτηση για την θανατική ποινή έρχεται να προστεθεί στην εισήγηση της κυβέρνησης να θεσπίσει την παρατεταμένη κράτηση των καταδικασμένων για τρομοκρατικές ενέργειες, ακόμη και μετά το πέρας της ποινής τους, σε περίπτωση που συνεχίσουν να θεωρούνται επικίνδυνοι από τις Αρχές. Αυτή η πολιτική, η οποία μονοπώλησε την σύνοδο κορυφής του Συμβουλίου των Αυστραλιανών Κυβερνήσεων την Παρασκευή, αποτελεί ένα από τα μέτρα πρόληψης του φαινομένου της ριζοσπαστικοποίησης, καθώς περιορίζει την επανένταξη στην κοινωνία των ατόμων που ενδέχεται να επηρεάσουν και άλλους στην διάπραξη τρομοκρατικών ενεργειών. Από τις αρχές τονίζεται ότι έχουν αυξηθεί οι μεμονωμένες επιθέσεις εναντίον αστυνομικών από νεαρά άτομα που έχουν περάσει στην σφαίρα επιρροής τζιχαντιστών και αποτελεί προτεραιότητα η καταπολέμηση του φαινομένου. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι αυτού του είδους οι εξτρεμιστές, νέοι που βρίσκονται στα πρώτα βήματα του ισλαμικού εξτρεμισμού, αποτελούν την πλειοψηφία των ατόμων που βρίσκονται στην λίστα παρακολούθησης των αρχών, καθώς πολλοί από αυτούς ενδέχεται να ριζοσπαστικοποιηθούν περισσότερο στο μέλλον. Η Αστυνομία της Βικτώριας επιβεβαίωσε ότι αυτήν την στιγμή βρίσκονται υπό παρακολούθηση περισσότερα από 200 άτομα – αριθμός εντυπωσιακός μεν, αλλά που στην πλειοψηφία του αφορά άτομα άτομα που δεν αποτελούν σοβαρό κίνδυνο, προς το παρόν, καθώς ελάχιστοι εξ αυτών είναι εκείνοι που εκτιμάται ότι είναι σε θέση να πραγματοποιήσουν ένα χτύπημα εντός του αυστραλιανού εδάφους.

Ωστόσο, οι Αρχές τονίζουν ότι κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία έχει επιταχυνθεί σημαντικά η διαδικασία στρατολόγησης τζιχαντιστών και σχεδιασμού τρομοκρατικών ενεργειών, κάτι που καθιστά ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό τον εντοπισμό των νέων που έχουν περάσει στην επιρροή των τρομοκρατών και την απομάκρυνσή τους, προτού υιοθετήσουν πλήρως τον εξτρεμισμό.

The massive privatisation deal has been finalised.

The second and most decisive step for the concession to operate the country’s 14 regional airports was completed on Monday as the state sell-off fund (TAIPED) and the consortium comprising German group Fraport and Slentel (a unit of the Greek Copelouzos energy group) signed the contracts for the terminals’ concession. The agreement includes the obligation for the investor to improve the airports’ infrastructure.

TAIPED president Stergios Pitsiorlas said in a press release that the signing of the contracts constitutes a further step toward strengthening the Greek economy’s position in international markets.

Fraport board chairman Stefan Schulte thanked TAIPED and the Greek government and described the signing of the contracts as a landmark. “We are proud that the government and TAIPED have trusted the Fraport-Copelouzos consortium for the project of bolstering the competitiveness of these airports in the coming decades,” he said.

The package of 14 airports features most of the country’s main terminals outside the capital, including those of Thessaloniki, Myconos, Santorini and Zakynthos. However, for the contracts to be activated there are certain conditions that remain to be fulfilled. These concern the approval of the contracts by the European Commission and their ratification by the Greek Parliament, the issue of a presidential decree confirming the airports’ zoning plans, the delivery of the airports by the Civil Aviation Authority to the preferred bidder, and of a number of letters of guarantee to the state, and the payment of the lump sum payment of 1.23 billion euros. The deal is expected to be finalized by October or November 2016, after the end of the peak tourism season for Greece.

Infrastructure Minister Christos Spirtzis reiterated his disapproval of the deal despite putting his signature on it: “I continue to disagree with the way the concession of the 14 airports was conducted. However, this is among the commitments the country has made,” he said, adding that he had signed the contract with “much pain.”

A harsh new privatisation fund to be jointly supervised by Greek and foreign officials underway.

Lawmakers are on Tuesday night set to vote on a new round of prior actions demanded by creditors in exchange for a further 1 billion euros in bailout loans, a package that is widely expected to pass as contentious reforms including a pension overhaul and a new tax bill have been put off until January.

The new multi-bill of measures foresees the creation of a new privatisation fund, to be jointly supervised by Greek and foreign officials, the partial sell-off of Greece’s power transmission operator ADMIE, regulations allowing the sale of some nonperforming loans held by Greek banks, and a unified wage structure for civil servants.

Although some of the measures have prompted objections by coalition MPs, the government is not expected to suffer any defections on Tuesday.

A key reason is that authorities won some time by putting off until January hugely unpopular plans for pension sector reform and postponing until mid-February a decision on whether the mortgages on first homes and loans held by small and medium-sized businesses will also be opened up to a new market selling NPLs. The regulations going to a vote on Tuesday night only concern loans held by large corporations, with a staff of more than 250 people and a turnover in excess of 50 million euros a year, and mortgages on properties that are not first homes.

Nevertheless Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has come under fire for conceding on another “red line” he had once promised not to cross, namely the sale of loans and mortgages to so-called distressed debt funds.

In a bid to keep control of SYRIZA ahead of Tuesday’s vote, and with a difficult January looming, Tsipras has been meeting with leftist MPs.

Key government ministers did their best to justify their policies during a tense debate in Parliament on Monday. Faced with a barrage of criticism from the opposition, Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos declared, “I’m doing what I can under difficult circumstances in here and out there.”

Assuming the multi-bill gets the green light on Tuesday night, Greek officials must take a series of actions, mostly administrative, on Wednesday to clinch the release of the 1 billion euros by Friday. The Euro Working Group is to convene on Thursday night and is expected to approve the release of the bailout cash despite some fears about delays.

But it was clear, even before Tuesday’s vote, that creditors expect much more from Greece. In comments at an investors’ conference in New York on Monday, the International Monetary Fund’s envoy to Greece, Delia Velculescu, said the government’s proposals for pension reform would need to be improved if the country is to meet primary surplus targets. She also repeated the Fund’s insistence on the need for the country’s debt to be reduced.

Qantas is on track for what could be a record first half after announcing it will more than double its pre-tax profit for the six months to December 31.

The airline on Tuesday said improved revenue, cost cutting and continued lower fuel prices had put it on course for a pre-tax underlying profit of between $875 million and $925 million.

That’s a significant increase on the $367 million it reported in the prior corresponding period and in the region of the record $905 million for the first half of the 2008 financial year, a result that laid the platform for a record full year pre-tax profit of $1.41 billion.

Beating that would put Qantas on course to report a net profit in excess of that year’s record $969.7 million.

‘We’ve seen improved revenue in our domestic and international operations, reduced costs across the group through the Qantas Transformation program, and expect another record half-year result from Qantas Loyalty,’ chief executive Alan Joyce said.

‘This strong performance is underpinned by our continued focus on delivering the best service for our customers in all of the markets we serve.’

Qantas bounced back into the black in FY15, after the previous year’s record loss, thanks to its $2 billion Qantas transformation program, revenue growth and a hedging program that exploited falling fuel prices.

Those factors are in play again this financial year.

Qantas reported a full year net profit of $557 million for FY15, almost all of which was handed back to shareholders.

Homicide detectives have arrested a man and are expected to charge him with the murder of Khandalyce Pearce.

Daniel James Holdom, 41, was arrested at 8.30am on Tuesday and is currently being interviewed by detectives at Parramatta Police Station.
Police expect to charge him with the murder of Khandalyce in 2008. Her remains were found in a suitcase on the side of a highway in South Australia earlier this year.

He has already been charged with the alleged murder of her mother, Karlie Pearce-Stevenson. Her remains were found in Belanglo State Forest in 2008.

Police will allege Holdom killed Ms Pearce-Stevenson, 20, first in December 2008 before killing Khandalyce days later.

It was seven years before the toddler’s bones were found on the side of the Karoonda Highway at Wynarka in July.

Police only linked the two cases in October following a Crime Stoppers tip-off and a major DNA breakthrough.

The investigation has spanned four states, including the ACT, NSW, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

The mother and daughter left their life and family in Alice Springs between 2006 and 2008 to travel Australia.

Police say a large scale fraud was carried out in the young mother’s and daughter’s names after their deaths.

Their identity documents wee hijacked and more than $90,000 was funnelled through Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s bank account.

Police allege people with knowledge of her death used her mobile phone to provide a false proof of life to Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s family.

It was also used to ask Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s mother, who died from cancer in 2012, for money.

Holdom’s ex-girlfriend, Hazel Passmore, has been questioned at length by South Australian detectives over the alleged fraud.

She was left in a wheelchair in 2008 after Holdom crashed the car they were in, killing two of her children.

No charges have been laid in relation to the fraud.

The arrests come four days after Ms Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce were farewelled at a funeral in Alice Springs.
