Sydney has recorded its second hottest November day on record with the mercury soaring to 40.9C.

However, the scorching conditions are beginning to ease as a cold front sweeps the state.

Authorities are warning NSW residents to brace for damaging gale-force winds as the front starts to hit, with winds up to 90km/h tipped to rip through the state’s south, west and Central Coast.

Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast provided a taste of things to come, with temperatures dropping 13C in less than half an hour after 4pm on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, Penrith was the first location in Sydney to reach 40C shortly after midday.

The CBD hit a max of 40.9C at 3.05pm, according to official readings at Observatory Hill, failing to dislodge the 41.8C record set in 1982.

Further afield, the temperatures reached 42.8C at Sydney Airport, while Wilcannia in northwest NSW took out the state’s top temperature with 44.3C.

Friday’s hot, dry and windy conditions caused some headaches for firefighters, who were stretched across the state battling a string of blazes.

The Hume Highway remains closed in both directions at Goulburn in the Southern Tablelands as crews work to contain a grass fire.

And firies are still keeping a close eye on a bushfire at Hornsby in Sydney’s north, which is close to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

In Sydney’s southwest, large clouds of smoke billowed from a fire at an electrical substation before the blaze was contained soon after 2pm.

The fire caused major traffic delays and power outages in surrounding suburbs.

Ευοίωνα τα σημεία για την κυβέρνηση Turnbull

Ούριος φαίνεται να είναι ο άνεμος για την κυβέρνηση Turnbull, όσον αφορά τις περιβόητες μεταρρυθμίσεις του φορολογικού συστήματος, αρχής γενομένης από το GST (Φόρο Αγαθών και Υπηρεσιών), τον οποίο δέχεται η πλειονότητα των ψηφοφόρων, υπό τον όρο ότι θα τύχουν ανάλογης αποζημίωσης τα χαμηλά και μεσαία εισοδήματα.

Πρόκειται για ένα “παζάρι” που κερδίζει συνεχώς έδαφος, ιδιαίτερα μετά τη δήλωση του πρωθυπουργού ότι “οποιαδήποτε αλλαγή γίνει, θα πρέπει όχι μόνο να είναι δίκαιη, αλλά και να φαίνεται δίκαιη, διότι μόνο τότε θα έχει την αποδοχή του κοινού”.

Ότι ο κ. Turnbull έχει διδαχθεί από τα παθήματα του προκατόχου του, δεν υπάρχει η ελάχιστη αμφιβολία. Εξάλλου, είναι κάτι που -εμμέσως πλην σαφώς- εξέφρασε, όταν είπε ότι “ένα από τα μειονεκτήματα του Tony Abbott ήταν ότι δεν μπόρεσε να πουλήσει τις πολιτικές του στους ψηφοφόρους”.

Ο άνεμος πνέει λοιπόν όλο και πιο ευνοϊκά για τον Malcolm Turnbull, o οποίος κερδίζει συνεχώς έδαφος. Σύμφωνα με την τελευταία, μηνιαία, δημοσκόπηση του Fairfax/Ipsos, ο Συνασπισμός Φιλελευθέρων-Εθνικών συγκεντρώνει το 56% των προτιμήσεων των ψηφοφόρων, έναντι του 44% του Εργατικού Κόμματος.

Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι από την τελευταία δημοσκόπηση, τον Οκτώβριο, υπήρξε έντονη όσο και δημιουργική συζήτηση για το θέμα του GST και των φορολογικών μεταρρυθμίσεων γενικότερα.

Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει το γεγονός ότι, σύμφωνα με την τελευταία δημοσκόπηση, αυτοί που στηρίζουν την ανεξάρτητη αύξηση του GST έχουν μειωθεί από το 37% στο 28%, από τον Απρίλιο μέχρι τώρα, ενώ όσοι την αποδοκιμάζουν έχουν αυξηθεί κατά 7% την ίδια περίοδο, φθάνοντας στο 66% του συνόλου των ψηφοφόρων.

Ωστόσο, όταν οι ψηφοφόροι ερωτήθηκαν εάν υποστηρίζουν το GST σε περίπτωση που συνοδεύεται από φοροαπαλλαγές ή άλλου είδους αποζημιώσεις για οικογένειες με εισόδημα κάτω των $100,000 ετησίως, το ποσοστό των υποστηρικτών του GST σχεδόν διπλασιάστηκε, φθάνοντας το 52%, ενώ των αποδοκιμαζόντων μειώθηκε στο 41%.

ΣΤΗΡΙΞΗ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΥΣ ΕΧΟΝΤΕΣ

Παρ’ ότι είναι πλέον φανερό ότι οι έχοντες υψηλό εισόδημα δεν πρόκειται να αποζημιωθούν, σε περίπτωση αύξησης του GST, είναι εκείνοι οι οποίοι το υποστηρίζουν πιο ένθερμα από εκείνους που θα αποζημιωθούν.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, από εκείνους που έχουν εισόδημα πάνω από $100.000, το 34% τάσσονται υπέρ της αύξησης του GST. Το αντίστοιχο ποσοστό μειώνεται στο 27%, μεταξύ εκείνων που κερδίζουν μεταξύ $40.000 και $100.000 και 22% σε όσους έχουν ετήσιο εισόδημα κάτω των $40.000.

Παρ’ ότι αρκετοί βουλευτές του Συνασπισμού φοβούνται ότι πιθανή αύξηση του GST θα προκαλέσει αρνητική αντίδραση, ο Malcolm Turnbull έχει επανειλλημένα διαβεβαιώσει τους αντιρρησίες ότι οποιαδήποτε αύξηση θα αντισταθμίζεται από αποζημιώσεις υπό μορφή φοροαπαλλαγών και αυξήσεων σε επιδόματα κοινωνικής πρόνοιας στα χαμηλά και μεσαία εισοδήματα.

Γενικά, η δημοσκόπηση αποκαλύπτει ότι οι ψηφοφόροι είναι πολύ πιο αντίθετοι σε μια πιθανή αύξηση του GST σήμερα, από ό,τι ήταν το 1998, όταν είχε παρθεί η απόφαση για την εφαρμογή του.

Ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει το γεγονός ότι η δημοσκόπηση έγινε σε δείγμα 1.402 ψηφοφόρων, μεταξύ της περασμένης Πέμπτης και του Σαββάτου, όταν ο κ. Turnbull βρισκόταν στην Τζακάρτα και το Βερολίνο και η σφαγή στο Παρίσι είχε “παγώσει” τον πλανήτη.

Σε παρόμοιες περιπτώσεις οι ψηφοφόροι πέφτουν σε νάρκη, ακριβώς όπως συνέβη στις 11 Σεπτεμβρίου 2001.

Αντίθετα, στην Αυστραλία, η δημοσκόπηση αποκαλύπτει ότι η ψήφος υπέρ του Συνασπισμού έχει αυξηθεί κατά 3% από τον περασμένο μήνα, φθάνοντας το 48%, ενώ του Εργατικού Κόμματος μειώθηκε στο 29%, χαμηλότερα δηλαδή από το 33% που ήταν στις εκλογές του 2013.

Η δύναμη των Πρασίνων βρίσκεται στο 13% από το 12% που ήταν τον περασμένο μήνα.

Αναφορικά με την πιθανή αύξηση του GST, το κυβερνών κόμμα θα πρέπει να οριστικοποιήσει το επίπεδο των εισοδημάτων τα οποία θα αποζημιωθούν. Οι Πολιτείες, με επικεφαλής τη Ν.Ν. Ουαλία, προτείνουν ως όριο τις $100.000 εισόδημα και κάτω.

Οι Εργατικοί και οι Πράσινοι αντιτίθενται σε οποιαδήποτε αύξηση του GST ή ακόμη και σε διεύρυνση της βάσης του, ισχυριζόμενοι ότι οι αποζημιώσεις είναι εφήμερες και οι φοροαπαλλαγές χάνουν συν τω χρόνω την αξία τους.

Σε γενικές γραμμές, οι ψηφοφόροι του Συνασπισμού είναι υπέρ της αύξησης του GST, ενώ των Εργατικών είναι αντίθετοι με ή χωρίς αποζημιώσεις.

Να σημειωθεί ότι ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten, την περασμένη Δευτέρα ηγείτο εκστρατείας κατά του GST στο Darwin, υποστηρίζοντας ότι πιθανή αύξηση του GST σε 15%, θα χτυπήσει σκληρότερα τις απομακρυσμένες περιφέρειες: “Το κόμμα των Εργατικών είναι κάθετα αντίθετο σε αύξηση 15% του GST”, ήταν το σύνθημα της καμπάνιας.

Σχεδόν 300 άτομα παρευρέθηκαν στην αίθουσα του ιστορικού σωματείου «Μέγας Αλέξανδρος» στη διάρκεια παρουσίασης του βιβλίου «Μακεδόνες Έλληνες στην Ωκεανία» του καθηγητή Αναστάσιου Μ. Τάμη, που εξέδωσε ο Εκδοτικός Οίκος Τζιόλα της Θεσσαλονίκης.

O «Μέγας Αλέξανδρος» είναι το αρχαιότερο μακεδονικό σωματείο της Αυστραλίας και ιδρύθηκε από τον Ζήση Νόλλη το 1929. Την έρευνα της μελέτης είχε αναλάβει η Παμμακεδονική Ένωση Βικτωρίας.

Το βιβλίο παρουσίασε τη Δευτέρα, 9 Νοεμβρίου, ο αντιπρόεδρος της κυβέρνησης Δυτικής Αυστραλίας Dr. Kim Hames, τελετάρχης ήταν ο πρόεδρος της Βουλής, Dr. Michael Sutherland, εκπρόσωπος του αρχηγού της αντιπολίτευσης ήταν η βουλευτή Jen. Freeman, ενώ παρέστησαν και οι βουλευτές και γερουσιαστές Ian Bitsi, Παναγιώτης Κατσαμπάνης και Ελένη Ευαγγελινού. To Eλληνικό Προξενείο στο Περθ εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον υποπρόξενο κ. Χρήστο Κουβάτσο, ενώ το Πανεπιστήμιο Notre Dame Australia, εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον καθηγητή Martin Drum, ενώ παρευρέθηκαν πανεπιστημιακοί και φοιτητές κι ανάμεσά τους οι καθηγητές Σταν Κακούλας, John Neville Jones, Τζον Γιαννάκης, Αγγελική Γιαννάκη, ο διευθυντής του Αγίου Ανδρέα Simon Minson, ο υπεύθυνος Ελληνικών κ. Την όλη εκδήλωση οργάνωσαν ο πρόεδρος της Παμμακεδονικής Δυτικής Αυστραλίας, κ. Παύλος Άφκος, με το επιτελείο των συνεργατών του και ο πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας και συντονιστής των Ελληνικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Notre Dame, κ. Σάββας Παπασάββας. Οι δύο παράγοντες μίλησαν με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση για τα “Δημήτρια” και κάλεσαν τον Ελληνισμό σε εγρήγορση, προκειμένου να διαφυλάξουν οι Έλληνες και τα παιδιά τους την ταυτότητα και την πολιτιστική τους φυσιογνωμία στην Αυστραλία.

Η τελετή άρχισε με την ανάκρουση των Εθνικών Ύμνων Ελλάδας και Αυστραλίας από τη μαθήτρια του Αγίου Ανδρέα, Αθηνά-Άννα Πασχαλίδου, η οποία με την υπέροχη φωνή της συγκίνησε τα πλήθη.

Ακολούθησε σεμνή τελετή με την απονομή βραβείων σε μαθητές του «Αγίου Ανδρέα» που έλαβαν μέρος σε μαθητικό Διαγωνισμό με θέμα τη Μακεδονία. Οι μαθητές του ημερησίου ελληνικού σχολείου, που ανήκει στην Ελληνική Κοινότητα Περθ, και οι οποίοι βραβεύθηκαν ήσαν οι Nadja Ilic, Faatema Memojee, Natalie Jacob, Paige Nott, Emily Bird, Vivian Zhang, Alexander Chesson, Athena Anna Pashalidou, Athanasios Katsavounidis και Panagiotis Nestoriadis.

Ακολούθησε ο φιλέλληνας αντιπρόεδρος της κυβέρνησης Δυτ. Αυστραλίας, Dr. Hames, ο οποίος εξήρε τη συμβολή του συγγραφέα στην καταγραφή της ιστορίας των Ελλήνων της Αυστραλίας, τόνισε την ιδιαίτερη συμμετοχή των Μακεδόνων Ελλήνων στη ζωή της τοπικής κοινωνίας, μίλησε με ιδιαίτερη αγάπη για τη Μακεδονία και την Καστοριά που επισκέφτηκε πρόσφατα και κάλεσε τον Ελληνισμό να συνεχίσει την επιτυχή πορεία του στην Αυστραλία.

«Το βιβλίο περιγράφει τη σημαντικότατη προσφορά των Μακεδόνων στην Αυστραλία και μαρτυράει τον αγώνα τους για προκοπή» τόνισε ο Αυστραλός αξιωματούχος. Ο πρόεδρος της Βουλής, Dr. Sutherland εξήρε το έργο του συγγραφέα πριν τον καλέσει στο βήμα.

Ο κ. Τάμης αναφέρθηκε συνοπτικά στο περιεχόμενο του βιβλίου και κάλεσε τον Ελληνισμό να αγωνιστεί για τη διατήρηση της εθνογλωσσικής του ταυτότητας. Ακολούθησε δεξίωση με φαγητά που ετοίμασαν οι κυρίες της Παμμακεδονικής και του «Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου».

Αίσθηση προκάλεσε το γεγονός ότι ο πρόεδρος της Παμμακεδονικής, κ. Άφκος, η Ελληνική Λέσχη, η Ελληνική Κοινότητα Δυτικής Αυστραλίας, ο «Μέγας Αλέξανδρος» και άλλοι φορείς, προμηθεύτηκαν δεκάδες βιβλίων και τα δώρισαν συμβολικά σε Αυστραλούς πολιτικούς και κυβερνητικούς λειτουργούς, βιβλιοθήκες και πανεπιστημιακούς.

2,000 year old ruins uncovered by archaeologists could lead to more in the area

An ancient Greek settlement has been discovered in southern Ukraine near the Black Sea.

The discovery made by archaeologists from the National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the University of Warsaw, was found on the Dnieper River and is believed to have formed part of a trade route from ancient times.

A representative from the University of Warsaw said the finding could pave way for more in the area.

“Over a dozen similar settlements have been identified so far in the lower Dnieper. If we manage to raise adequate funds, we are planning to conduct research on a wider scale,” said Marcin Matera.

“In the first place we would like to do documentary work and geophysical surveys of each of the settlements because they are subject to systematic robbery excavations. Besides, they have never been comprehensively surveyed.”

For its exemplary rescue work in the Aegean

Amidst warm applause and in a highly emotional ceremony, UNICEF Greece presented the Lambros Kanellopoulos award to Greece’s coast guard on Thursday.

The award is presented for coast guard search-and-rescue efforts in the Aegean, especially its work for the protection of refugee and migrant children. The award was one of the prizes handed out by UNICEF in 2015 for Universal Children’s Day, celebrated on November 20.

Earlier, a video of coast guard officers’ sensational efforts to save small children had been shown.

According to senior coast guard officer Athanassios Hondronasios, the number of refugees and migrants arriving by sea had increased 1,873 pct in comparison with 2014. During that time, there had been 4,800 rescue operations, in which 89,000 refugees and migrants were rescued, including 16,500 children and infants.

According to figures presented by UNICEF, the children of migrants and refugees were currently the most disadvantaged in Europe, while more than 200,000 children had risked their lives in 2015 to seek refuge in Europe.
Others awarded during the ceremony on Thursday in central Athens’ ‘Stoa Vivliou’ were Marie Kyriakou for her work to promote the rights of children through her television programme, and the Thira Special Primary School, which received the ‘Nikos Analytis’ award.

Prizes were then given to the schools and school children who had distinguished themselves in the educational programme ‘Children Write and Draw their Rights’.

Greece has no evidence that the suspected mastermind of the attacks in Paris, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was ever in the country, a senior interior ministry official said on Thursday.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve had earlier said that on Nov. 16, after the Paris attacks, an intelligence service of a non-European country had signaled that Abaaoud had been in Greece.

Abaaoud died in a French police raid on Wednesday.

“There is no evidence, nothing has come up that shows that this person was in Greece,” the Greek official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He added that France had not passed on any information to Greece about Abaaoud having been in the country.

Greek authorities raided an apartment in Athens and detained three people in January in connection with a foiled Islamist plot to attack Belgian police. Two of them were released shortly afterwards, while the third, 33-year old Algerian Omar Damash, was extradited to Belgium.

Greek police sources said the arrests were made because the Belgian authorities believed that Abaaoud was calling associates in Belgium from Greece.

But police said they found no evidence linking a mobile phone found in the Athens apartment, nor Damash, to Abaaoud.

“The arrested man was not found to have any relation (with Abaaoud,” the interior ministry official said.

Recordings of Abaaoud’s voice were checked against the people detained in Greece and the mobile phone and they did not match, he said.

Tempers have flared at Greece’s main border crossing with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), where riot police pushed back thousands of migrants jostling to cross over, after FYROM blocked access to people deemed to be economic migrants and not refugees.

Holding their identity papers aloft, several hundred Syrians, Afghans and Iraqis, who are being allowed into FYROM, crossed the border Friday morning until police halted the flow again to ease congestion on the FYROM side.

Once across, migrants head for the nearby Gevgelija train station, to continue by rail north through Serbia toward wealthier northern European Union countries.

About 3,000 people remain on the Greek side of the border near the village of Idomeni, including about 1,000 Iranians and north Africans whom FYROM is not letting in.

Overnight, police led some 4,000 people into FYROM by routes circumventing Idomeni, after migrants who are not being allowed in blocked the official crossing to complain about being excluded.

TOXIC heavy metals have been detected in a stormwater pit next to a new residential subdivision on former Pasminco land at Boolaroo.

Tests confirmed cadmium and zinc – slightly above environmental water quality levels – at the site, believed to be from contaminated groundwater.

An Environment Protection Authority spokeswoman said investigations were under way to determine how to deal with the polluted water. The sediment basin is located on TC Frith Avenue, on land that was gifted to Lake Macquarie City Council and will be converted to a stormwater quality treatment basin. It used to be part of the ‘‘triangle paddock’’ where the 90-lot housing estate is being built by developer Stevens Group, opposite the former Pasminco lead and zinc smelter.

When contacted about the issue, Boolaroo Action Group spokesman Stan Kiaos said he was concerned pollution was still a problem on the site. ‘‘I would really like to know why the community hasn’t been told about this and what they plan to do with the water,’’ he said.

Boolaroo community reference group chairman Greg Piper, the Lake Macquarie MP, said he was unaware of the issue, but would raise it at the group’s meeting next week.

Authorities have been strongly criticised for their handling of the clean-up of the Pasminco site and Mr Kiaos said confusion still reigns. He said authorities were ‘‘passing the buck’’, after the EPA and Lake Macquarie City Council pointed to each other.

An EPA spokeswoman said the land was being subdivided under council planning consent and the stormwater pit was on council land.

‘‘The developer (Stevens Group), Pasminco and council are currently working on options for the disposal of water from the site,’’ she said.

But the council referred questions about the polluted water back to the EPA.

‘‘The water quality in the sediment basin is under investigation by the EPA in consultation with the land developer,’’ a spokeswoman said. When asked about the source of the contamination and what would be done with it, the council spokeswoman referred the question to the EPA.

Stevens Group planning services manager Lin Armstrong said Bunderra was the ‘‘cleanest site’’ in Boolaroo.

She said water from the basin was usually pumped to the Pasminco site and used as dust suppressant. ‘‘The plan is to fill the bottom and cap it with a clay base so it no longer interacts with the groundwater and won’t be an issue,’’ she said.
