Liverpool FC- Three Key Questions For Brendan Rodgers Ahead Of Manchester City’s Visit

Liverpool FC vs West Ham United
Liverpool host Manchester City in a very crucial Premier League match that could well go on to prove an important factor in Liverpool’s top 4 bid and City’s title fight with Chelsea.

The Reds won’t be too disappointed with collecting just a point in this fixture, even though it could mean that Spurs overtake them in the table if they’re able to beat QPR away from home.

Some people are arguing that Liverpool’s season might have reached its breaking point now as the side looked nothing like its recent self against Besiktas. Brendan Rodgers’ young side needs to prove these statements wrong and beating last season’s title winners will be just the right way to go about it. The fight for the top 4 places is very intense with Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs and Southampton all there sniffing blood at any chance, and West Ham United also breathing heavily down their necks from not far below.

Here are three questions Liverpool need to answer against Manchester City.

Is Daniel Sturridge fit enough to start?

Liverpool’s talismanic striker’s return to action was the most awaited thing in Merseyside. After a gap of five months, the England international finally made his return, and scored as well. Brendan Rodgers is doing the right thing by easing him in and not making him start too many games. The Northern Irishman did start him against Besiktas and Sturridge didn’t look like he is ready to play 60-70 minutes, let alone 90 minutes. Against City, it will only be tougher and the pace of the game will naturally be more. If the 25 year old isn’t on his top game, it might cost Liverpool dearly.

Rodgers has two options in this case- either he starts Mario Balotelli as a lone striker against his former team, or use Raheem Sterling as a false nine. Balotelli has looked really good of late, but starting him alone might bring back the old problems. The Italian isn’t very mobile and Liverpool’s high intensity pressing game might be hindered with just him up front alone. In case Sturridge starts, Balotelli’s inclusion then makes sense. Otherwise, getting the player from the bench might be the best way Rodgers can use him in since the 24 year old has proved to be a great impact substitute lately. Raheem Sterling had a nightmare of a game against Besiktas and also played the full 120 minutes. He would understandably be tired. However, starting him as a false nine might be the way to go as the player fits all the bills needed from a Rodgers’ striker. Moreover, Sterling’s finishing has also improved lately and he might make the crucial blow in City’s title challenge.

Who starts in the midfield- Emre Can or Joe Allen?

Allen should be persisted with, in the midfield.

Emre Can started in the midfield alongside Joe Allen against Besiktas. Even though the two played okay, they clearly don’t compliment each other’s game and the results for  Can being put in the midfield – to get the attacks going from the heart of the pitch – didn’t come Liverpool’s way. Against City, Jordan Henderson will come back so there will be space for only one alongside the likely captain on the day. Brendan Rodgers would have to make the call as to which player gets to play in the midfield on the day.

Allen has done well since coming in the side for the injured Lucas. He is not the most loved by the Liverpool fans, but has put performances that must surely have got the Kop faithful to reconsider their decision. Therefore, Allen has the form to play this big match. Moreover, his defensive presence will allow Henderson to weave the attack from the midfield. Alongside Can – who Henderson hasn’t partnered in the midfield much – he wouldn’t know if he is getting enough cover to play his natural game. Emre Can is a defensive midfielder but his positional sense makes him an ideal box to box player so he will be at his impactful best if he plays alongside another defensive midfielder. Therefore it would make more sense if Rodgers goes with the back-line that has got him a bevy of favorable results recently and uses Allen in the midfield. Let’s not forget, after Joe Allen’s wonderful performance against City where he “put Yaya Toure in his back pocket throughout the game” in February 2013, the Ivorian went on to admit it was the toughest game he has played in England.

Who should the front 5 comprise?

Can Coutinho prove to be the difference for Liverpool?

Brendan Rodgers needs to ensure that he gets his team selection absolutely spot on against the second placed side. Especially in terms of attack, since City pose a relatively vulnerable defence. On the left wing, undoubtedly Alberto Moreno should start the game. The Spaniard has put on some very underrated performances recently. He was brought on as a second half substitute against Southampton after Lazar Markovic had a torrid time on the left flank against Clyne and Filip Duričić. After his introduction, Clyne hardly got a whiff on the left wing and Moreno contained the threatening full-back extremely well. On the right flank, Brendan Rodgers has two options, Lazar Markovic or Jordan Ibe. Ibe has been Liverpool’s X factor recently, and his pace and ability to cut inside might be too much for the City defenders. But Markovic has got enough rest after missing the Besiktas clash and he will be fresh and ready for this game. Rodgers could start both the players by placing Ibe as the right wingback and Markovic slightly ahead behind the striker. Philippe Coutinho will be a sure starter for the Reds. After 19 straight start, the Brazilian was given rest and was left out of the squad against their Turkish opponents. Liverpool supporters will hope Coutinho, like in the corresponding fixture last season where Liverpool’s title dreams were firmly made (0nly to be shattered shortly after), can make a similar impact against Pellegrini’s side this season as well. Raheem Sterling will start alongside Coutinho in case Sturridge doesn’t place. In case the striker isn’t tarted, Sterling is likely to be used as the false nine, and one of Adam Lallana or Lazar Markovic will be started alongside the 20 year old.

Abbott leadership crisis: ‘dissident Liberals will never be satisfied’

imagesA5LUDJC6

TONY Abbott has made light of the latest round of leadership speculation as recycled rubbish.

Mr Abbott is facing reports that a majority of Liberal MPs and senators now want to dump him, with Julie Bishop and Malcolm Turnbull touted as challengers.

But, speaking to reporters at a Clean Up Australia Day event on NSW’s south coast, the prime minister played down reports he could face another leadership spill this week.

“This is Clean Up Australia Day, and I’m just not going to do anything but recycle the rubbish,” he joked.

“And that’s what’s happening, we’re just recycling rubbish today.”

“Frankly, I think the people of Australia are sick of the insider obsessions of people in Canberra,” he said.

Earlier today, Josh Frydenberg said dissident Liberals will never be satisfied with Tony Abbott’s leadership.

The Assistant Treasurer this morning said the Prime Minister would never satisfy those MPs, even if he won a Nobel Prize or delivered a stirring speech in the mould of Abraham Lincoln.

Asked if there would be a leadership spill this week, Mr Frydenberg said: “I hope not.”

“Ever since the formation of the Liberal Party by Sir Robert Menzies in the mid-1940s we’ve never ever thrown out a prime minister in his first term,” he told ABC’s Insiders.

“John Gorton came to the leadership in 1968. In 1969 he won an election. In 1971 he used his own vote to take himself out of the leadership. Look what happened; we got Gough Whitlam in 1972; that wasn’t a good outcome for the Liberal Party.

“There’s certainly going to be members of my own side who want to see a change in leader, but I don’t think anything the Prime Minister does will convince them that he should stay in the role. I mean, If he delivered the Gettysburg Address, if he won a Nobel Prize, they’d still take the position they’d want a change in leader.

“My view though … is that’s a minority view.”

The Sunday Telegraph reports the Foreign Minister would stand against Malcolm Turnbull in the event of a leadership spill.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb could also stand, reportedly telling MPs that Communications Minister Turnbull is “not conservative enough”, the report reads.

Mr Frydenberg said: “Julie Bishop has said that she supports the Prime Minister like we all do, and I don’t want to go down that path because I’m very confident that Tony Abbott has the support of the party room.”

Mr Turnbull warned continuing leadership instability was detracting from the NSW Coalition’s re-election campaign.

“The big political question in the next four weeks is the NSW state election,” he said.

“Federal issues are really important, of course they are, but for the next four weeks the most important thing is getting Mike Baird re-elected.”

Ms Bishop dismissed the continued leadership speculation as hypothetical.

“The prime minister has not been challenged. There was a spill motion that didn’t succeed, and what we’re doing is focusing on governing,” she told Network Ten.

‘Budget work to be done’

The Weekend Australian reported on Saturday that Mr Abbott is expected to dump the controversial $5 co-payment for Medicare services this week.

“We’ve learned the lessons of the first budget and I think there’s a lot more work to be done,” Mr Frydenberg says.

“Around the Medicare co-payment the big lesson is you need to consult more broadly with the relevant stakeholders in the industry, get their support before going forward with a major change.

“I’m not going to pre-empt any decision that’s been made this week but it’s clear from what the Prime Minister said that there will be significant changes around those health decisions.”

Spain, Portugal sought to trip up gov’t, Tsipras says

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras delivers a speech at the Syriza party headquarters, in Athens on Saturday.

Leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Saturday accused governments in Spain and Portugal of working with the conservative opposition at home in a bid to weaken, or even topple, his anti-austerity administration.

Addressing SYRIZA’s central committee on Saturday, Tsipras said that Madrid and Lisbon officials had sided against Athens during negotiations on February 20 that led to a four-month extension of the country’s loan deal.

“We were up against an axis of powers led by Spain and Portugal, which for obvious political reasons sought to lead the whole negotiation to the brink,” Tsipras said.

“Their plan was, and it remains, to wear down, topple or bring our government to unconditional surrender before our work starts to yield fruit and before the Greek example affects other countries,” he said. Both Mediterranean countries will hold elections this year.

Tsipras said that the reaction of the European People’s Party (EPP), of which New Democracy is a member, had shown that Greece’s main conservative opposition was an “accomplice” and “executive arm” in the anti-SYRIZA campaign.

ND chief Antonis Samaras hit back at the allegations.

“[Tsipras] creates imaginary enemies in order to justify his own lies and deadlocks,” he said in a statement on Saturday. “He should be ashamed.”

Socceroos seal March date with FYR Macedonia

20150201001095869050-original

Australia will play a second match in Europe next month after the announcement of a fixture against FYR Macedonia.

The clash will take place in Skopje on 30 March, only five days after Australia plays world champion Germany.

It will be the second time the Socceroos have played against FYR Macedonia. The teams previously met in 1997, when current Socceroos assistant coach Aurelio Vidmar scored the only goal of the match in the 89th minute.

“We’re very pleased to secure a second match in Europe during the upcoming FIFA window,” said Socceroos head coach Ange Postecoglou.

“Two matches in five days against European opposition gives us a good opportunity to build on the platform we set in winning the Asian Cup.

“They are currently in the middle of qualifying for Euro 2016 so that gives us good opposition as we prepare for our next qualification campaign, which starts in June.”

EPL: Manchester Utd defeat Sunderland 2-0

Wayne Rooney fires home the penalty that gave Man Utd the lead against Sunderland

Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United to a 2-0 Barclays Premier League win over 10-man Sunderland that returned his side to third in the table.

Sunderland had come away from Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory last season and early openings for Connor Wickham and Jermain Defoe suggested the hosts could have a similarly uncomfortable afternoon.

Ashley Young come close to giving United the lead when his first-half effort was diverted against the crossbar by John O’Shea. The Sunderland captain and Wes Brown were at the centre of the game’s decisive moment in the 64th minute. Radamel Falcao was fouled under pressure from the two centre-backs to concede a penalty, with Brown shown a red card by referee Roger East.

Rooney, who was starting up-front as Louis van Gaal made five changes to his starting XI, converted from the spot and added a second in the 84th minute to ensure United bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City last time out, keeping their bid for UEFA Champions League qualification on track.

The goal also ended an eight-match run in the Barclays Premier League for Rooney without a goal.

Peter Crouch needed just two minutes after coming off the bench to strike the decisive blow as Stoke City beat Hull City 1-0 and equal a Barclays Premier League record. The former England striker headed home with his second touch after coming on as a second-half substitute at the Britannia Stadium, ending Hull’s recent resurgence.

A lacklustre, scrappy first half ended without an effort on target but Charlie Adam’s introduction at the break gave Stoke a lift. The Scot’s two early efforts on Allan McGregor’s goal both went wide but he turned provider for Crouch in the 72nd minute, lifting an inch-perfect cross into the penalty area for the veteran striker to nod home in trademark fashion.

The goal marked Crouch’s 46th with his head in the Barclays Premier League, equalling Alan Shearer’s record.

Swansea City earned a 1-0 win against Burnley as Kieran Trippier’s own goal gave Garry Monk’s side all three points at Turf Moor. A low-key affair was settled by a scrappy goal midway through the second half, as Swansea were able to build on last week’s 2-1 win over Manchester United.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton produced a superb save to keep out former Burnley loanee Jack Cork at the back post, but Cork’s rebound struck Trippier and was fumbled over the line by the shot-stopper. The win lifts Swansea to eighth, while defeat means Burnley remain in the bottom three, with QPR just above them on goal difference with a match in hand.

Newcastle United condemned Tim Sherwood to a second consecutive loss as Aston Villa manager as they ran out 1-0 winners at St James’ Park. John Carver’s side, boosted by the return of Jonas Gutierrez to the bench for the first time since the Argentinian overcame testicular cancer, took the lead against the run of play through Papiss Cisse’s 11th league goal of the campaign midway through the first half.

They were able to celebrate three points after soaking up second-half pressure, with Christian Benteke having a goal ruled out for offside, while the hosts also went close through Ryan Taylor and Ayoze Perez. The result lifts Newcastle on to 35 points, while Villa have lost seven consecutive league matches and remain in 19th place.

Saido Berahino endured a day of mixed emotions as his superb early goal gave West Bromwich Albion a 1-0 win over Southampton before he was forced off injured in the second half.

The West Brom striker, who was passed fit to start the match at The Hawthorns despite carrying a knock, gave Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster no chance with an unstoppable half-volley after just two minutes. However, West Brom head coach Tony Pulis will be concerned by his attacking options after his top scorer was replaced shortly after the break, by Brown Ideye, who also apparently picked up an injury late on.
