Around half of the newly elected MPs in Parliament have chosen not to have an official car, paid for out of public coffers.

Parliament Speaker Zoe Constantopoulou confirmed Friday that a total of 67 out of 135 new lawmakers will not be provided with an official vehicle.

Of the car-less deputies, 47 are from governing SYRIZA.

The MPs who were re-elected in the January 25 election will retain their cars.

The data were published after reports gave inaccurate figures, Constantopoulou said.

More than half of Germans believe debt-stricken Greece should leave the eurozone, according to a poll published on Friday amid a war of words between Athens and Berlin.

And 80 percent believed Greece is not acting in a reliable manner in its negotiations with eurozone partners, found the Politbarometer survey released by public broadcaster ZDF.

The proportion of respondents who think Greece should stay in the currency union has fallen to 40 percent from 52 percent two weeks ago, while 52 percent now believe it should leave, up from 41 percent.

Only 11 percent now think the left-wing government in Athens is behaving in a trustworthy way in talks with its EU partners.

And only 14 percent believe the Greek government will actually implement the austerity and reform measures it has committed to, while 82 percent doubt it.

Eighty percent believe Greece should get no more bailout funds if it fails to follow through on its pledges, according to the survey conducted by the Mannheim Research Group.

The poll also confirmed Chancellor Angela Merkel as the country’s most popular politician, followed in second spot by Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

Merkel and Schaeuble have championed tough austerity and reform demands in return for aid to Greece, making them hate figures for many in Greece as the country has chafed under cutbacks and high unemployment.

Politbarometer surveyed by telephone 1,266 randomly selected voting-age Germans between March 10 and 12.

The unemployment rate started climbing again in the last quarter of 2014, putting an end to a period of moderate decline.

The jobless reached 26.1 per cent of the work force in October-December 2014 due to the political and economic uncertainty generated by the prospect of the elections and the change in government, Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) figures showed this week.

That rate compares to 25.5 per cent in the third quarter of the year, but is below the rate recorded a year earlier (27.8 per cent). The number of unemployed in the last quarter of 2014 reached 1,245,854 people.

The ELSTAT survey also found that eight out of 10 jobless Greeks are so desperate to find work that they are prepared to take any job offered to them as the rate of long-term unemployed (those out of work for at least 12 months) is continuing to grow, reaching 73 per cent against 72 per cent a year earlier.

«Αγαπητή μου Retno». Με αυτό τον τρόπο ξεκινά η επιστολή της Αυστραλής υπουργού Εξωτερικών, Julie Bishop, προς την Ινδονήσια ομόλογό της, Retno Marsudi. Η κ. Bishop αναφέρει ότι η Αυστραλία δεσμεύεται να αναλάβει το κόστος φυλάκισης και συντήρησης των δύο Αυστραλών θανατοποινιτών Andrew Chan και Myuran Sukumaran, στην περίπτωση που δεν προχωρήσουν οι εκτελέσεις τους.

«Βρισκόμαστε σε προκαταρκτικές συζητήσεις. Υπέβαλα την πρόταση προς την Ινδονήσια υπουργό Εξωτερικών και αναμένω μια απάντηση» είπε η υπουργός.

Προηγουμένως, η κ. Bishop είχε καταθέσει μια εναλλακτική πρόταση, αυτή της ανταλλαγής κρατουμένων, ωστόσο η κ. Marsudi αρνήθηκε την προσφορά. Η Αυστραλή υπουργός δήλωσε ότι όλες οι προσπάθειες και οι ενέργειές της στοχεύουν στην επίτευξη αναστολής της εκτέλεσης. Απέρριψε την κατηγορία ότι η Αυστραλία ασκεί υπερβολική πίεση και πολιτική εκφοβισμού προς την Ινδονησία. «Ζητάμε, με τον πιο σεβάσμιο τρόπο από τον Πρόεδρο Joko Widodo, να δείξει το ίδιο έλεος για τους δύο Αυστραλούς θανατοποινίτες, όπως ζητούν οι Αρχές της Ινδονησίας από άλλες χώρες».

Ο Αυστραλός δικηγόρος των Chan και Sukumaran, Peter Morrissey, χαρακτήρισε την προσφορά της κ. Bishop ελκυστική, αλλά αμφέβαλε αν οι ινδονησιακές Αρχές θα την αποδεχθούν.

ΓΑΛΛΙΚΕΣ… ΕΛΠΙΔΕΣ

Η αναβολή εκτέλεσης ενός Γάλλου υπηκόου αφήνει κάποια ελπίδα για παρόμοια απόφαση για τους Αυστραλούς. Ο Serje Areski Atlaoui άσκησε επιτυχημένη έφεση κατά της καταδικαστικής απόφασης και η ακρόαση θα γίνει στο τέλος του μήνα.

Έχουν περάσει δύο εβδομάδες από τότε που δικαστήριο της Ινδονησίας απέρριψε το ενδεχόμενο ο πρόεδρος Widodo, να εξετάσει τα στοιχεία για τους δύο Αυστραλούς και να επανεκτιμήσει την κατάστασή τους.

Οι δικηγόροι των Αυστραλών αμέσως άσκησαν έφεση και βρισκόμαστε σε αναμονή εν όψει της εκδίκασης των δικαστικών προσφυγών από ορισμένους από 10 ακόμα θανατοποινίτες. Εκτός από τους δύο Αυστραλούς, έξι θανατοποινίτες βρίσκονται στις ίδιες φυλακές.

ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑΚΕΣ ΣΤΙΓΜΕΣ ΑΓΩΝΙΑΣ

Την Τετάρτη, οι Chan και Sukumaran συνάντησαν για δεύτερη φορά τις οικογένειές τους στις φυλακές Nusakambangan της Κεντρικής Ιάβας.

Παρούσα ήταν και η αρραβωνιαστικιά του Chan, Feby, που την συνάντησε πρώτη φορά από τότε που μεταφέρθηκε από τη φυλακή στο Μπαλί την προπερασμένη Τετάρτη.

Το τελευταίο διάστημα, οι δύο οικογένειες μένουν στην πόλη Cilacap που βρίσκεται κοντά στις φυλακές. Ούτε κι αυτές γνωρίζουν ακόμη πότε θα γίνουν οι εκτελέσεις.

Οικονομικές δυσκολίες, ζητήματα υγείας και το υπερβολικό άγχος οι κύριοι λόγοι.

Τριάντα τρεις χιλιάδες πρωτοετείς φοιτητές πανεπιστημίου εκτιμάται ότι σκοπεύουν να εγκαταλείψουν τις σπουδές τους μέσα στο 2015, σύμφωνα με έρευνα που ήρθε στη δημοσιότητα. Ο λόγος γι’ αυτήν την απόφαση είναι οι οικονομικές δυσκολίες, αλλά και ζητήματα υγείας, ή το υπερβολικό άγχος. H μελέτη εκπονήθηκε από τον οργανισμό “Think Education”, με στοιχεία που διαθέτει το Υπουργείο Παιδείας, βάσει των οποίων προκύπτει ότι περίπου οι μισοί από τους Αυστραλούς φοιτητές δηλώνουν ότι θα προτιμούσαν να είχαν σκεφτεί πιο διεξοδικά τις επιλογές σπουδών και σταδιοδρομίας.

Με σειρά προτεραιότητας, οι λόγοι που αναγκάζουν τους φοιτητές να εγκαταλείψουν τις σπουδές τους είναι η υγεία, το άγχος, η ισορροπία των σπουδών με την προσωπική ζωή, οι οικονομικές δυσκολίες και ο φόρτος εργασίας. Όλοι αυτοί οι λόγοι συνθέτουν ένα περίπλοκο σύμπλεγμα παραγόντων που απογοητεύει τους πρωτοετείς από τις σπουδές. Πολλοί αντιμετωπίζουν και το σοκ της μετάβασης από το σχολείο στο πανεπιστήμιο, ζήτημα το οποίο καλούνται να αντιμετωπίσουν τα πανεπιστήμια, μέσα από ειδικά προγράμματα υποστήριξης, μέσα από τα οποία οι φοιτητές θα προετοιμάζονται καλύτερα για την πειθαρχία που απαιτείται, αλλά και για το ότι είναι πολύ φυσιολογικό στην ηλικία τους να έχουν αμφιβολίες για την επιλογή καριέρας. Άλλοι παράγοντες που επιβαρύνουν τους φοιτητές, αυξάνοντας το άγχος τους είναι ότι συχνά αναγκάζονται να ξοδέψουν πολύ χρόνο στις μετακινήσεις προς και από το πανεπιστήμιο, ή να μετακομίσουν μακριά από την οικογένεια και τους φίλους τους. Αυτοί οι παράγοντες πολλαπλασιάζουν το στρες, αν προστεθούν σε ζητήματα υγείας, στις απαιτήσεις της σχολής ή αν υπάρχει δυσαρέσκεια με το αντικείμενο των σπουδών. Συχνά οι φοιτητές που είναι δυσαρεστημένοι διστάζουν να αντιμετωπίσουν το ζήτημα, αλλάζοντας αντικείμενο, από φόβο ότι έτσι θα αυξηθεί ο χρόνος των σπουδών με επακόλουθο τον πολλαπλασιασμό του σπουδαστικού τους χρέους. Άλλη έρευνα που διεξήχθη σε δείγμα 1.000 Αυστραλών ηλικίας μεταξύ 25 και 29 ετών έδειξε ότι περίπου τα ⅔ από αυτούς πιστεύουν ότι θα έπρεπε να έχουν αφιερώσει περισσότερο χρόνο στην επιλογή σπουδών ή σταδιοδρομίας, μετά το σχολείο. Αλλά είναι τόσος ο φόρτος εργασίας την τελευταία χρονιά του σχολείου, που συχνά αυτό δεν είναι δυνατόν, οδηγώντας τους νέους σε λανθασμένες επιλογές.

Στοιχεία του Υπουργείου Παιδείας επιβεβαιώνουν ότι το 2013, το 20% των πρωτοετών είτε εγκατέλειψαν τις σπουδές τους, είτε άλλαξαν αντικείμενο σπουδών, ή άλλαξαν πανεπιστήμιο. Το 2014 περισσότεροι από 244 χιλιάδες φοιτητές ήταν εγγεγραμμένοι στα πανεπιστήμια της Αυστραλίας.

The exhibition will feature intimate photos from the Gallipoli campaign.

A unique and innovative fundraising event will showcase Greece’s link to Australia’s Anzac story in the photographs rarely shown in public.

The exhibition has been curated by historian and Secretary of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, Jim Claven.

Mr Claven has selected 40 photographs from the large archive of photographs taken by Anzac soldiers and other Allied photographers during the Gallipoli campaign. They reveal the role of Lemnos in the Allied campaign at the Dardanelles in amazing clarity.

The photographs have been sourced from collection in war memorials and museums, libraries and universities from across Australia and beyond. They include photographs taken by the Australian photographers Sergeant Albert Savage, Major Laurence Herschel Harris and War Correspondent Phillip Schuler, as well the British photographer Lieutenant Ernest Brookes held in London – amongst others.

Mr Claven said that this exhibition of high resolution images from 1915 is a great opportunity for the general public to see with their eyes the depth of the connection between Lemnos and the Anzacs.

“Since I first saw these rarely published images I have been captivated by them and been eager to bring them to the attention of the public”, Mr Claven said.

He explained that the exhibition photographs show the Anzacs arriving on Lemnos in their transport ships, its great harbour of Mudros filled with Allied ships preparing for war, the troops practicing their landing techniques on Lemnos’ shores, the hospitals where Australia’s 130 nurses cared for the sick of the campaign as well as the local villagers, the great Anzac camp at Sarpi and the graves of the 148 Australians and 76 New Zealanders who lie there.

Mr Claven said that one of the most fascinating aspects of the Lemnos Gallipoli photographic archive is the number of photographs revealing the inter-action between the local Lemnians and the Anzac soldiers and nurses.

“There are lots of images of Anzacs visiting local hora, of sitting in the local kafenio, enjoying the natural hot springs at Therma, viewing local churches and schools, and the natural beauty of the Island. Some of the most touching are those of Australians with local families. These reveal the first real links between Australians and Greeks in Greece.”

Mr Claven has produced an Exhibition booklet explaining the role of Lemnos and the story of the photographs. The booklet will be provided to all attendees as a momento of their attendance.

Committee President, Lee Tarlamis, urged people to attend the Exhibition.

“All who attend the Exhibition will be amazed at the images displayed and go away from it better informed and appreciative of the Australian presence on Lemnos 100 years ago.”

The Photographic Exhibition will be launched at the Thessaloniki Association Hall, 459 High Street Northcote, 6pm, Sunday 22 March 2015. Tickets cost $70, with refreshments and finger food provided.

All proceeds will go to the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial projects of the Committee – including its Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Statue to be erected in Albert Park in August this year and to the publication of a major new authoritative book telling the Lemnos Anzac story in words and pictures to be launched early in 2016. Funding and sponsorship is currently being sought for this publication.

The Exhibition will also feature a number of original paintings on the Lemnos Anzac connection by Melbourne-Cypriot artist, Mr George Petrou, which will be for sale.

After the launch the Photographic Exhibition will tour Melbourne and Victoria, being exhibited at schools and local councils. If an organisation is interested in subsequently hosting the Photographic Exhibition they are urged to contact Mr Claven.

The Photographic Exhibition fundraiser was announced at an event revealing the completed clay statue of the nurse which will form the major component of the Committee’s Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial Statue in Albert Park.

Held at sculptor Peter Corlett, OAM’s studio, the unveiling was attended by sponsors of the Memorial and was addressed by Peter Corlett and Lee Tarlamis. Peter explained his creative process and how he was inspired by the stories of the Anzac nurses on Lemnos and his appreciation of Classical Greek sculpture.

Lee Tarlamis explained how this was a major milestone in making the unique Memorial a reality. The clay statue will now be transformed in the sculpting process into a bronze statue, followed by the statute of the accompanying digger and stone plinth on which the statues are positioned. All is on track for the Memorial’s planned unveiling in August 2015.

Jim Kospetas joins forces with the young Greek TV cooks.

The TV sensation Greek foodies, twin sisters Helena and Vikki Moursellas, have tapped another collaboration. This time, they will join forces with The Civic Hotel on Pitt Street, Sydney.

These two My Kitchen Rules contestants are set to reboot the legacy of Peter and Eleni Conistis and make this pub feel like home. Helena and Vikki Moursellas will be infusing some of their mouth-watering Greek recipes from their cookbook Taking You Home into the menu.

Jim Kospetas, The Civic Hotel’s owner, describes the menu as “Aussie gastro pub food with a Greek twist”. Civic Bistro fusion kitchen by Helena and Vikki is slated to open around Greek Easter, in mid-April.

At the moment Tona Inthavong, a seasoned restaurateur who operates Green Peppercorn upstairs at The Civic, is helping them with their newest venture, while designer Jeremy Bull is renovating the pub, creating a modern yet welcoming space for The Civic’s loyal eaters.
