Giannopoulos Fitzy battle boils over

Giannopoulos Fitzy battle boils over

Nick Giannopoulos

Comedian Nick Giannopoulos gets his apology for years of personal attacks by Nova’s Fitzy.

A social media battle between Greek Australian comedian Nick Giannopoulos and Nova radio host, Ryan Fisher (Fitzy) came to a boiling end this week, as co-host Michael Wipfli (Wippa) stepped in and apologised on behalf of the radio network.

A private text message to Giannopoulos from Wippa indicated the pair’s remorse and recognition of the fact that the taunting of Giannopoulos had overstepped the line.

“Without question … we overstepped the mark on what was an outdated and exaggerated story,” Wippa said to Giannopoulos.
Giannopoulos posted the text message on his Facebook page on Monday, before removing the post later that day.

The apology here refers to the issue that sparked the feud in 2010, when Giannopoulos was interviewed on a radio show hosted by Fitzy in Adelaide to promote his movie Kings of Mykonos. Giannopoulos refused to participate in a game proposed by the station, whereby audiences would call into the station and Giannopoulos would have to guess if they were ‘wog’ or not before they went on air.

While the interview went ahead without the game, Giannopoulos was met with aggression and verbal attacks from Fitzy.

“I had never been treated with so much disrespect before on live radio,” Giannopoulos wrote in a post on Facebook.

Years later, Giannopoulos felt he was still being targeted by the radio host in a number of unwarranted attacks. Fed up with the long running behaviour of the radio host, Giannopoulos turned to social media to express his irritation, telling fans that he felt Fitzy had had an “ongoing campaign to humiliate and degrade” him at every opportunity that he could.

The apology was welcomed by Giannopoulos, but he said he had requested the message be read live on air and a further $2,000 donation be made to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, which Giannopoulos said he will match. The response of requests has further sparked debate with Facebook followers, with some supporting Giannopoulos’ decision to use the negative issue for positive return, while others believing the requests indicate lack of character.

Giannopoulos has not yet received a response from Fitzy and Wippa.

Taliadoros runs for FFV president

Taliadoros runs for FFV president

Kimon Taliadoros says he wants to repair the relationship between the FFV and the grassroots clubs after the NPL lauch saga.

Former Socceroo Kimon Taliadoros is hoping to “unlock the impediments of football’s growth” in Victoria if he is elected president for the Football Federation of Victoria (FFV).

Taliadoros says he wants to see the federation take a more affirmative approach to dealing with the sport’s skyrocketing popularity.

“The game needs to be able to provide the facilities to service that demand,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“For instance, football can’t get access to grounds after the cricket season and for vast periods of time the grounds remain vacant.

“It’s a major impediment.”

As a former board member of the federation during the turbulent National Premier League (NPL) launch that saw more than 50 local teams boycott the FFV’s proposed structure, Taliadoros knows that much more is needed to repair the federation’s damaged relationship with the clubs.

“The FFV in its process failed to discharge responsibility to arrive at a decision it made,” he says about the boycott.

“It disenfranchised a good part of the Victorian football stakeholders and resulted in division between clubs and amongst clubs which needs to be repaired.”

A collective of the clubs took the FFV to court over what they called an unworkable and financially risky NPL model, eventually winning the case after the Football Federation of Australia stepped in to mediate talks.

Mr Taliadoros admits that the current structure of the NPL still has its problems and knows much more needs to be done to make the league fairer to less financially able clubs.

“It’s a source of anxiety for the clubs participating and for those clubs wanting to create pathways to their local community,” he says.

“We have to still solve the NPL problem, and in so doing we hope that the relationship, the trust and mutual cooperation will be at the heart of doing that.”

Fellow Greek Australian Nicholas Tsiaras is also running for election at the FFV, this time for a director’s role.

Vice president of NPL1 club Box Hill United, Tsiaras brings with him a sound knowledge of finances, having been working as an accountant for more than 25 years.

If elected, Tsiaras says he will work towards ensuring transparency in the board and making the game more affordable to Victorian families.

He also will work on implementing a new strategic plan the FFV will implement in 2016 if elected.

The FFV will announce who has been successful in the two roles on Monday March 30, 2015.

Australia:Labor supports training for multicultural students

Labor supports training for multicultural students

The Andrews Labor government highlighted the positive elements students coming from multicultural backgrounds have to offer to Victoria.

More than 30 per cent of Learn Local students across Victoria were born overseas.

The Andrews Labor government expressed its support to students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds undertaking training courses, which will help them integrate into the Australian reality.

Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert, stressed the fact that thousands of international students also add to our culture and society while studying in Victoria.

“Victoria is the multicultural capital of Australia, therefore must continue to provide training opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Steve Herbert told.

“The Andrews Labor government is supporting multiculturalism, helping all students, including those from diverse backgrounds, get the qualifications they need for the job they want.”

During Cultural Diversity Week, Mr Herbert underlined the positive elements of the students’ multicultural diversity and emphasised on Learn Local organisations’ contribution in providing essential and effective training to multicultural students.

“Learn Locals can help people return to study and gain a qualification,” Mr Herbert continued.

“They are an important pathway and we will support them as we get Victoria back to work.”

Learn Local organisations offer a range of education and training programs, providing both pre-accredited and accredited training on many different topics, including reading, writing English, maths, hospitality, retail, business and construction.

“Our thriving multicultural community groups work tirelessly to promote diversity and cohesion,” Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott explained.
Across the Victorian training system, culturally and linguistically diverse learners accounted for 11 per cent of total accredited and pre-accredited enrolments in 2013, but represented more than a quarter of enrolments at Learn Local organisations.

“Cultural Diversity Week celebrates our rich diversity and promotes a harmonious society.”

“We’re home to one of the most multicultural societies on earth – and Victorians are proud of it,” Minister Scott added, highlighting that in 2013, 36 per cent of Learn Local students across Victoria were born overseas.

The most popular pre-accredited training courses at Learn Local organisations were literacy and numeracy programs, the general education program and employment skills programs.

More discoveries at Amphipolis

More discoveries at Amphipolis

The intricate mosaic found on the floor of the tomb.

The Amphipolis tomb’s doors show signs of heavy use, meaning many visitors came and went.

A geologist who took part in the excavation of the ancient burial mound in Amphipolis in northern Greece says the ancient tomb found together with a series of vaulted rooms wasn’t built at the same time, but somewhat later than the rooms themselves.

Geologist Evangelos Kambouroglou also said that the mound inside which the rooms and the tomb were found is not man-made, as archaeologists had assumed, but a natural hill.

He also said that the Lion of Amphipolis, a huge sculpture of a lion on a pedestal, which is more than 25 feet (7.5 metres) tall, was too heavy to have stood at the top of the tomb, as archaeologists had claimed.

“The walls (of the tomb structure) can barely withstand half a ton, not the 1,500 tons that the lion sculpture is estimated to weigh,” Kambouroglou said.

As for the box-like tomb that contained the remnants of five bodies, possibly more, “it is posterior to the main burial monument … the main tomb has been destroyed by looters, who left nothing,” said Kambouroglou. “The marble doors (of the monument) contain signs of heavy use, which means many visitors came and went.”

The vaulted rooms had been dated to between 325 BC – two years before the death of ancient Greek warrior-king Alexander the Great – and 300 BC, although some archaeologists claimed a later date.

Katerina Peristeri, the chief archaeologist in the recent excavation, had advanced the theory that a member of Alexander’s family or one of his generals could be buried in the tomb. But the discovery of the boxy grave and the five bodies cast doubt on that theory and Kambouroglou’s announcement appears to disprove it entirely.
Alexander, who built an empire stretching from modern Greece to India, died in Babylon and was buried in the city of Alexandria, which he founded. The precise location of his tomb is one of the biggest mysteries of archaeology.

His generals fought over the empire for years, during wars in which Alexander’s mother, widow, son and half-brother were all murdered – most near Amphipolis.

The discovery of the tomb has seen international exposure, but the cash strapped Greek government says it won’t be giving any more funding to the site at this stage.

Experts have been told to focus on the findings that have already been unearthed, Alternate Culture Minister Nikos Xydakis said during a visit to the site last week.

“There are not many excavations in Greece that have received such support,” he said to the media. “At the moment, there is not a need for any more.”

New generation embraces the evzone, cliches and all

The evzone today graces works of art, stencils, T-shirts, coasters, cloth bags, cell phone cases and scarves. Many of these creations can be seen at the Benaki Museum’s Pireos Street annex, where 50 creators – among them architects, graphic, product, fashion and accessory designers, photographers, visual artists and ceramists – have turned folksy stereotypes on their head in an attempt to redefine the Greek souvenir.

Before the economic crisis, the only place you’d see the emblematic Greek evzones – the fustanella-clad, pom-pom-toed presidential guards – was in front of the Parliament and at the Presidential Mansion, in the form of statues or touts outside grill houses in the southern suburb of Vari, or in miniature at kitsch souvenir shops.

As Greece sank deeper into a six-year recession and started rethinking its identity, the evzone became quite a different subject, inspiring artists, designers and other creative types who breathed new life into the heroic warrior. The evzone began to grace works of art, stencils, T-shirts, coasters, cloth bags, cell phone cases and scarves. Today, many of these creations can be seen at the Benaki Museum’s Pireos Street annex, where 50 creators – among them architects, graphic, product, fashion and accessory designers, photographers, visual artists and ceramists – have turned folksy stereotypes on their head in an attempt to redefine the Greek souvenir, and particularly the evzone. Why is the new generation fascinated by this elite ceremonial unit? What do its members symbolize? Why do the artists believe that the evzone can define the present while also expressing the desire to know and come to terms with our past? Some of the people who brought the evzone into the modern age answer these queries.

“The evzone as a symbol is in postmodern fashion. In my photograph of the evzone floating at sea, I intended to poke fun and ridicule our sense of nation,” notes Panos Kokkinias, one of Greece’s most respected photographers. “No one knows whether the evzone is alive or dead, whether he’s just chilling out or is being carried by the waves.”

The evzone at sea is Yiorgis Yerolymbos, also a photographer, who offered to pose for Kokkinias in the signature costume. It was no easy feat to stay afloat in the heavy fustanella skirt and the wooden tsarouchi shoes.

“The most poignant and pressing question right now during the crisis is about who we are and where we’re going,” says Kokkinias. “It is only natural for the evzone to make a comeback, the traditional costume that I have always regarded as either tacky or funny. Our generation has no guilt about the past and can use national symbols with freedom and ingenuity.”

Artists, curators and brothers Dimitris and Giorgos Georgakopoulos are the founders of Cheap Art. They have created an interesting poster, on display at the Benaki, which was originally for an exhibition of contemporary Greek art titled “Boiling Point” in Austria and Athens, showing an evzone dangling from a pair of metal tongs over a pot of boiling water.

“It’s a comment on the nationalist trends that are being fortified on the political stage as well as about the exaggerated concept of ‘Greekness,’” explains Dimitris. “We decided to resort to this symbol in a spirit of self-deprecation and in order to avoid cheesy populism, at a time when the country has reached boiling point. Anyway, the evzone and the Acropolis are images that are also very familiar to foreigners.”

Set designer and architect Dimitris Polychroniadis used a shot by photographer Nikos Stournaras as a starting point for the recent group exhibition “1821 Meters,” which he curated. The image is from a 1970s postcard showing two evzones on the Acropolis with Mount Lycabettus in the background.

“Maybe the evzone’s comeback is about nostalgia for an innocence lost. Maybe we all see in him a piece of our past that is lost forever,” says Polychroniadis. “Furthermore, the evzone was used as a vehicle of ideology by the junta regime, which is why that generation is allergic to it. Maybe we can look at him today without that kind of baggage and love him for what he is: a part of our tradition. For me personally, the evzone symbolizes our cultural incompatibility with Western Europe. I sometimes feel like I live in a country of evzones disguised in European dress.”

Beside the artists, designers have also created an army of evzones.

“We chose to play with the figure of the evzone in a series of souvenirs we’re doing for Athens because it is associated with the city and is a kind of sentimental reference for residents and tourists alike,” says Angelika Niarchou of the Ploos Design firm. Together with Georgia Economopoulou, Ploos has designed T-shirts, scarves and other objects. “Evzones used to be kitsch. Now they can be cute and trendy,” says Niarchou.

The designers at DKD have created a series of paper figures of stereotypical Greek characters called “Meet the Greeks.” The evzone is one of their best sellers. “The evzone is a souvenir classic,” says Petros Dimopoulos. “We wanted to give him a new figure, one that’s cute and contemporary. The response has been great.”

Graphic designer and illustrator Marianna Kelali was inspired to create her adorable evzone doll by a guy called Tasos who works as an evzone-tout in Vari but dreams of becoming the real thing.

“The plastic evzone we find at kiosks in Plaka and other tourist areas is one of the most classic souvenirs. I took it, kept the basic characteristics, like the mustache, the hat and the colors, and adapted it to my style. The response, especially from tourists, has been exceptionally warm. You can’t help liking Tasos. Everyone wants to be his friend.”

Ex-finance minister guilty of doctoring Lagarde list, gets suspended term

A special court set up to try former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou handed the former PASOK official a one-year suspended jail sentence on Tuesday despite finding him guilty of tampering with the Lagarde list of Greeks with deposits at the Geneva branch of HSBC.

The 13 judges presiding over the court ruled that Papaconstantinou had deleted the names of three relatives from more than 2,000 on the list that had been handed to the government by French authorities in 2010. However, they decided that the ex-minister’s actions did not lead to the state suffering damages of more than 150,000 euros, which would have led to his crime being treated as a felony.

Instead, the doctoring of the list was treated as a misdemeanor, carrying a maximum jail sentence of five years. The court took into account Papaconstantinou’s clean record and handed him a one-year suspended sentence. Five of the 13 judges had voted for the ex-minister to be cleared of the doctoring charge as they felt there was not enough evidence to support it.

During the trial, which consisted of 10 lengthy sessions over the last few weeks, Papaconstantinou maintained his innocence. He insisted that he did not remove any names from the list when transferring it from a CD to a memory stick that was later passed to the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) so it could investigate for possible tax evaders.
