AVIATION enthusiasts gathered at Illawarra Regional Airport were treated to a spectacular sight this morning when a historic Qantas Boeing 747-400 jet made a precision touchdown on its way to its final resting place.  

The flight, like the aircraft, was historic: it marked the first time a Boeing 747 had landed at the regional airport. A team of four highly experienced Qantas pilots trained for more than 25 hours in a flight simulator to prepare for the extremely short landing, which was executed flawlessly.

The specially numbered Qantas Flight 7474 — the airline’s first 747, celebrated for having flown the longest commercial flight — was delivered to its new home with the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society, where it will become the only 747-400 in the world to go on public display.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said donating the aircraft to the HARS museum would provide not only a great tourist attraction but an opportunity to preserve an important piece of aviation history.

“Having graced the pages of the record books, revolutionised air travel for Australians, marked a huge technical feat for Qantas and carried millions of passengers on their global adventures and home again, our B747-400 ‘City of Canberra’ is very deserving of a graceful retirement as the star attraction at one of Australia’s most prestigious aviation museums,” Mr Joyce said in a statement.

“As she takes her rightful place in aviation’s hall of fame at HARS, we’ll be reminded of her lasting legacy as a great aviation pioneer, a legacy that continues to inspire and drive Qantas’ spirit of innovation and world class airmanship and engineering today.”

Bob De La Hunty, President of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society, said HARS was honoured to receive the gift. “Our members will be very proud to look after VH-OJA, particularly as so many of them have been part of the Qantas family too. We look forward to preserving this piece of Qantas history for future generations and have set our sights on building another hanger for it.”

Prior to delivery, the aircraft livery was given a ‘Permaguard’ coating to protect the paintwork for years to come, while the interior was given a “full spruce up”, with the only items removed being the Qantas Flight Operations manuals in the cockpit, the galley carts that store in-flight meals, and the fresh flowers in the lavatory.

Με τέρμα του Νίκο Λόπες στο πέμπτο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων του αγώνα, η Βερόνα αναδείχθηκε ισόπαλη 2-2 εκτός έδρας με τη Μίλαν, σε αναμέτρηση για την 26η αγωνιστική του ιταλικού πρωταθλήματος.

Στο 47′ ο Ταχτσίδης με αυτογκόλ είχε δώσει το προβάδισμα με 2-1 στους «ροσονέρι», όμως, ούτε αυτό τους βοήθησε να αποφύγουν τη «γκέλα» μέσα στο Σάν Σίρο.

Στην πέμπτη θέση ανέβηκε η Σαμπντόρια φτάνοντας τη Φιορεντίνα στους 42 βαθμούς, με παιχνίδι περισσότερο όμως, καθώς στον αγώνα με τον οποίο άνοιξε η αυλαία, νίκησε στο «Μαράσι» την Κάλιαρι 2-0 και παραμένει στη διεκδίκηση της τρίτης θέσης και της εξόδου στο Champions League.

Η επικεφαλής της Υπηρεσίας του ΟΗΕ που είναι αρμόδια για την ισότητα των γυναικών θυμίζει ότι ένα κορίτσι που γεννιέται σήμερα θα είναι μία γιαγιά 81 ετών πριν να έχει την ίδια ευκαιρία με έναν άνδρα να αναλάβει θέση διευθύνοντα συμβούλου σε κάποια επιχείρηση.

Το ίδιο κορίτσι θα πρέπει να περιμένει να γίνει 50 ετών μέχρι να έχει την ευκαιρία να ηγηθεί μιας χώρας.

Είκοσι χρόνια μετά την υιοθέτηση ενός σχεδίου υπέρ της ισότητας των γυναικών από 189 χώρες του κόσμου, η Φουμζίλε Μλάμπο – Νγκτσούκα είπε στο Associated Press ότι ούτε μία χώρα δεν έχει επιτύχει ισότητα φύλων.

Τα σχόλιά της έρχονται λίγο πριν από την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας.

Σύμφωνα με στοιχεία που έδωσε στη δημοσιότητα ο Διεθνής Οργανισμός Εργασίας (ILO) του ΟΗΕ, οι γυναίκες θα συνεχίσουν να αμείβονται λιγότερο από τους άνδρες για τα επόμενα 70 χρόνια εάν το μισθολογικό χάσμα μεταξύ των δύο φύλων συνεχίσει να μειώνεται με τους σημερινούς ρυθμούς.

Σήμερα οι γυναίκες κερδίζουν το 77% όσων κερδίζουν οι άνδρες από τη δουλειά τους και σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία του ILO αυτές που πλήττονται ιδιαίτερα είναι οι μητέρες και μάλιστα οι γυναίκες που έχουν περισσότερα του ενός παιδιά.

Τα στοιχεία δείχνουν ότι οι γυναίκες έχουν και διαχειρίζονται το 30% των επιχειρήσεων, αλλά αυτές αποτελούν κυρίως μικρές επιχειρήσεις. Οι γυναίκες είναι μέλη Διοικητικών Συμβουλίων εταιριών σε ποσοστό 19% παγκοσμίως και μόνο το 5% ή και λιγότερο των διευθυνόντων συμβούλων είναι γυναίκες.

Στο Πεκίνο συλλαμβάνουν φεμινίστριες

Τη στιγμή που ο πλανήτης ετοιμάζεται να γιορτάσει την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας, η Κίνα έθεσε υπό κράτηση τουλάχιστον δύο ακτιβίστριες για τα δικαιώματα των γυναικών, κατήγγειλε δικηγόρος. Το Πεκίνο αυξάνει τα μέτρα πριν από προγραμματισμένες συγκεντρώσεις το Σαββατοκύριακο για την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας.

Η Λι Τινγκτίνγκ, γνωστή με το ψευδώνυμο Λι Μάιζι κρατείται στο Πεκίνο, ενώ μία άλλη ακτιβίστρια η Τσενγκ Τσουράν κρατείται στην πόλη Γκουανγκτσού.

Ακτιβίστριες σχεδιάζουν να διαδηλώσουν κατά της σεξουαλικής παρενόχλησης σε δημόσια μέσα μεταφοράς.

Και μία ξεχωριστή καμπάνια

Την ίδια στιγμή, ο Στρατός της Σωτηρίας στη Νότιο Αφρική χρησιμοποιεί το γνωστό φόρεμα που δίχασε το Διαδίκτυο (για το εάν είναι μαύρο και μπλε ή λευκό και χρυσό) ως ένα μήνυμα κατά της βίας κατά των γυναικών.

Στις αφίσες του, δείχνει μία γυναίκα ξυλοκοπημένη να φορά το φόρεμα σε λευκό και χρυσό με τη φράση: «Γιατί είναι τόσο δύσκολο να δει κανείς μαύρο και μπλε».

Η καμπάνια συνεχίζει: «Η μόνη ψευδαίσθηση είναι να πιστέψει κανείς ότι ήταν δική της επιλογή. Μία στις έξι γυναίκες πέφτουν θύματα κακοποίησης. Σταματήστε την κακοποίηση κατά γυναικών».

Αν και ήταν πολύ καλύτερη σε όλη τη διάρκεια του αγώνα, η έκπληξη του Αγγλικού Κυπέλλου, Μπράντφορντ, που αγωνίζεται στην 3η κατηγορία, έμεινε στο 0-0 με την Ρέντινγκ, η οποία αγωνίζεται μια κατηγορία παραπάνω.

Η Μπράντφορντ είχε αρκετές ευκαιρίες όμως η ατυχία. αλλά και η απειρία των παικτών της, της στοίχησε τη νίκη.

Με γκολ των Ντελφ στο 51ο και Σινκλέρ στο 85ο λεπτό, η Άστον Βίλα νίκησε με 2-0 τη Γουέστ Μπρομ και προκρίθηκε στα ημιτελικά του Κυπέλλου Αγγλίας, αναμένοντας πλέον τον αντίπαλο που θα προκύψει μετά την κλήρωση της Δευτέρας.

Η Μπάγερν συνάντησε αντίσταση στο πρώτο ημίχρονο στην έδρα του Ανόβερου και βρέθηκε πίσω στο σκορ, αλλά στην επανάληψη κυριάρχησε και επικράτησε της γηπεδούχου 3-1, με τον Τόμας Μίλερ να σημειώνει δύο γκολ.

Την ίδια ώρα η Βόλφσμπουργκ γνώριζε οδυνηρή ήττα στην έδρα της Άουγκσμπουργκ, με αποτέλεσμα οι Βαυαροί να ξεφύγουν 11 βαθμούς από τους «λύκους».

Ένα πολύ μεγάλο «δώρο» έκανε το βράδυ του Σαββάτου, ο Ερνέστο Βαλβέρδε στην αγαπημένη του Μπαρτσελόνα, αρκεί φυσικά οι Καταλανοί να αποδειχθούν ικανοί για να το αξιοποιήσουν. Η Αθλέτικ Μπιλμπάο, που εδώ και μερικές αγωνιστικές θυμίζει την περυσινή σπουδαία ομάδα που κέρδισε έξοδο στο Champions League, νίκησε στο «Σαν Μαμές» την πρωτοπόρο Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης 1-0 με γκολ του σπουδαίου φορ Άριτζ Αντούριθ και ανέβηκε στην όγδοη θέση.

Ταυτόχρονα κράτησε καθηλωμένη τη «βασίλισσα» στους 61 βαθμούς, που σημαίνει ότι αν η Μπαρτσελόνα νικήσει την Κυριακή στο «Καμπ Νου» τη Ράγιο Βαγιεκάνο, οι «μπλαουγκράνα» θα βρεθούν μόνοι στην πρώτη θέση ύστερα από μήνες.

German holidaymakers are increasingly flocking to Greece, leaving the acrimonious wrangling between the two capitals over Athens’ debt mountain, halting reforms or fears of a “Grexit” to the politicians.

“Little by little, people do realize that politics has nothing to do with the reality of tourism,” George Trivizas, of the tour operator Kentavros, said at the Berlin tourism fair, running until March 8.

The allure of Greece’s picturesque beaches, azure skies and diverse islands drew around 2.5 million Germans in 2014, an 8.5-percent rise on the previous year, according to the Bank of Greece.

For package holidays alone, the increase was 17 percent, Germany’s DRV federation of travel agents said.

And for 2015, the DRV expects more growth despite recent barbed exchanges between Greek and German ministers as bailed-out Athens wrestles to bring down its debt that now equals about 175 percent of annual economic output.

Sporting a badge with overlapping Greek and German flags, Trivizas said bookings from Germany were already up in the first few months of this year.

The trend, and especially its timing, may surprise some.

The same period has seen Greece’s new anti-austerity government face skepticism in Europe’s top economy as it negotiated an extension to its huge bailout amid German taxpayers’ fears of having to stump up more aid. Germany has prescribed strict austerity measures for the eurozone’s debt-mired members while it has largely shrugged off the turbulence to continue to post overall growth with one of the bloc’s lowest unemployment rates. “What affects us more is the German economy, more than the politics,” Trivizas, who is also a board member of GePoet, a Greek federation of tourism businesses, told AFP.

Rolf Schrader, of ReiseAnalyse, a Berlin-based tourism analysis company, said Greece had dropped off as Germans’ holiday destination of choice in the early 2000s, well before the eurozone crisis began.

He compiles an annual survey among 8,000 Germans with Ipsos market research company.

“For two years, it has been going up again,” he said, adding Greece was now nearly back up to its 3.5-percent market share from 2002.

Last year vacations in Greece accounted for 2.9 percent of destinations for Germans, compared to 1.8 percent two years earlier.

Back in 2012, the eurozone crisis was at its height and Greece’s image was marred by frequent strikes and violence on the sidelines of anti-austerity demonstrations.

Greece could even soon overtake France in the table of Germans’ top holiday spots if the trend continues, although Spain, Italy, Turkey and Austria still remain far ahead in their affections.

Around a quarter of Germans said in a poll at the beginning of the year that a holiday in Greece was appealing, 67 percent said the sun and heat were decisive factors in choosing their destination.

With its weather, natural assets and tourism track record, Manos Iatrou, of Hellenic Island Services which organizes trips to Greek islands, said there was no “secret recipe” for Greece’s popularity.

Tensions between Athens and Berlin, effectively the eurozone’s paymaster, are “purely political” and have nothing to do with tourism, he insisted.

However he acknowledged that sales had temporarily flattened out over a two-week period around the time in late January when Greece’s radical left Syriza party won elections on the back of promises to roll back the country’s painful austerity program.

It hasn’t stopped some trying to mix up tourism and politics, though.

Two conservative German lawmakers, Axel Fischer and Ruediger Kruse, have suggested a compensation scheme for German tourists whose expenditure while in Greece helps boost the economy.

Under the proposal, a German holidaymaker on their return would be reimbursed 500 euros ($551) by the German state on presentation of restaurant and hotel bills, on condition that the hotel and eatery in question have paid their taxes.

Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos came under fire over the weekend from Ankara, which accused him of having a “provocative attitude” toward Turkey. “We invite the Greek government to display common sense and to take these irresponsible actions under control as soon as possible,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“It is clear that the continuation of these irresponsible actions will not serve any purpose other than increasing tensions in Turkish and Greek relations and in the Aegean,” it said.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Agora newspaper on Saturday, the junior coalition partner said that if foreign creditors insist on a hard line toward Greece, the government might be tempted to respond with a referendum.

“If [lenders] question the will of the Greek people and of the government, one response would be to carry out a referendum,” he said.

Greece faces another tough Eurogroup summit Monday when a slew of reform proposals from Athens are to come under the microscope in Brussels, with the two sides apparently far from a compromise even as state coffers in Athens are close to emptying.

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is expected to face a barrage of questions from his eurozone counterparts on a series of proposals set out in an 11-page letter he sent to Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem, which include the creation of a so-called fiscal council to generate budget savings, the revision of licensing for gaming and lotteries and the hiring of non-professionals, including students and tourists, as tax agents to help a foundering crackdown on tax evasion.

Sources suggested over the weekend that the proposals had met with skepticism from eurozone officials. In comments on Saturday on the sidelines of a conference in Venice, Varoufakis said he had received a response from Dijsselbloem. He added that Greece was keen to move forward with reforms but that the two sides must agree on “the process by which the reforms will be made more specific, implemented and evaluated so that they can be reviewed by the Eurogroup.” Varoufakis added that Greece’s reform program would be “discussed by technical teams that will convene shortly in Brussels.”

Some eurozone officials appeared to be running out of patience. ECB governing council member Luc Coene said in an interview on Saturday that Greece must realize “there is no other way than to reform,” noting that Greeks had been sold “false promises.”

“Tell me where the money should come from if the Greeks do not want reform and do not want to repay other European countries?” Coene told Belgian daily De Tijd.

Greece hopes that its proposed reforms will secure a portion of a pending 7.2-billion-euro loan installment. But it is unclear whether Varoufakis’s measures will be acceptable. Some believe the lenders will insist on the implementation of measures outlined after the last Eurogroup agreement which included changes to VAT policy.

In the meantime, state coffers are running dry and debt obligations are looming large. The government is ready to tap the cash reserves of social security funds and state organizations if necessary. The Finance Ministry sought to tap a portion of the 900 million euros left behind in the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, Kathimerini understands, but was prevented by the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
