Αποσύρεται από το προσεχές σχολικό έτος το βιβλίο της Ιστορίας της Τέχνης της Γ’ Λυκείου μετά τις επικρίσεις που διατυπώθηκαν για το γεγονός ότι η κλοπή των Γλυπτών του Παρθενώνα από τον Λόρδο Έλγιν παρουσιάζεται ως «μεταφορά».

«Πρόκειται για τερατώδη διατύπωση. Είναι βιβλίο που εκδόθηκε το 2003. Έδωσα εντολή στο Ινστιτούτο Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής (ΙΕΠ), να προχωρήσει άμεσα στην αποστολή πρότασης προς την αρμόδια διεύθυνση του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Θρησκευμάτων, για οδηγίες διδασκαλίας, ώστε οι εκπαιδευτικοί που διδάσκουν το μάθημα Ιστορία της Τέχνης της Γ’ Λυκείου, να δίνουν τις ορθές πληροφορίες προς τους μαθητές. Άλλωστε το βιβλίο θα αποσυρθεί την επόμενη σχολική χρονιά» ανέφερε ο υπουργός, Ανδρέας Λοβέρδος.

Ο υφυπουργός, Αλέξανδρος Δερμεντζόπουλος, επισήμανε ότι η διατύπωση για την ιστορία του γλυπτού διακόσμου του Παρθενώνα διαστρεβλώνει την ιστορική πραγματικότητα, καθώς αναφέρεται αποκλειστικά στη μεταφορά των γλυπτών στην Αγγλία, χωρίς να επισημαίνεται ότι αποτέλεσαν προϊόν υφαρπαγής.

«Το ίδιο ισχύει και τον χαρακτηρισμό των γλυπτών ως ‘μαρμάρων’» αναφέρει σε δήλωσή του.

Το εγχειρίδιο Ιστορία της Τέχνης εγκρίθηκε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2000, όταν εισάχθηκε στο πρόγραμμα σπουδών του Γενικού Λυκείου, ως μάθημα επιλογής.

Παράλληλα, ο κ.Δερμεντζόπουλος άφησε αιχμές για το γεγονός ότι το θέμα ήρθε στην επικαιρότητα κατά την προεκλογική περίοδο.

«Απορίες δημιουργεί η ‘σπουδή’ ορισμένων να ‘αποκαλυφθούν’ μέσω ανακοινώσεων εν μέσω προεκλογικής περιόδου ‘πλήγματα στην ιστορική και πολιτιστική συνείδηση όλων των Ελλήνων πολιτών: αλλά και προσπάθεια να ‘υπονομευθεί’ το αίτημα της Ελλάδας να επιστραφούν τα Γλυπτά του Παρθενώνα εκεί όπου πραγματικά ανήκουν» σημείωσε.

Οι Αυστραλοί αρνούνται να δουλέψουν σε αγροτικές δουλειές

Οι Αυστραλοί εργαζόμενοι, ακόμα και αυτοί που είναι άνεργοι, αρνούνται να δουλέψουν σε αγροτικές δουλειές, με αποτέλεσμα να υπάρχει μεγάλη έλλειψη εργατικών χεριών στην επαρχία.

Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που αρκετοί αγρότες που έχουν μεγάλα κτήματα σε πολλές επαρχίες της χώρας, αναγκάζονται να προσλάβουν νεαρούς τουρίστες, που ο νόμος τους δίνει το δικαίωμα να εργαστούν 20 ώρες τη βδομάδα, για τις δουλειές τους.

Σύμφωνα με την Ομοσπονδία Αγροτών Βικτώριας, πάνω από 40.000 ξένοι τουρίστες, ηλικίας μεταξύ 18 και 30 ετών εργάζονται κάθε χρόνο σε αγροκτήματα της χώρας.

Η Ομοσπονδία υποστηρίζει ότι οι ξένοι εργάτες είναι απαραίτητοι για την οικονομία της χώρας και ζητά από την ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση να επεκτείνει το χρονικό όριο που επιτρέπει στους νεαρούς τουρίστες να εγγίζονται.

Ιδιαίτερα για τις εποχιακές δουλειές, οι αγρότες βασίζονται πια σχεδόν αποκλειστικά στους νεαρούς τουρίστες που θα εργαστούν για τη συγκομιδή φρούτων και λαχανικών.

Εκτός, όμως, από τους αγρότες στα εργατικά χέρια των νεαρών τουριστών βασίζονται και άλλοι εργοδότες όπως για παράδειγμα οι ιδιοκτήτες μπυραριών, εστιατορίων και ξενοδοχείων που δεν μπορούν να βρουν ντόπιους εργάτες.

Αναφερόμενη στο θέμα, η εκπρόσωπος της Ομοσπονδίας, Suzan Finger, δήλωσε ότι οι νεαροί τουρίστες είναι πραγματικό χρυσωρυχείο για τους αγρότες που ψάχνουν απελπισμένα να βρουν εργατικά χέρια.

Σύμφωνα με την ίδια, οι νεαροί τουρίστες που έχουν βίζες περιορισμένης εργασίας και οι ξένοι εργάτες παίζουν απαραίτητο ρόλο στη συγκομιδή των φρούτων και λαχανικών που παράγονται σε διάφορες επαρχίες της χώρας.

Ο αγώνας διακόπηκε για 15 με 20 περίπου λεπτά και καλέστηκε η αστυνομία.

Ο τελικός του πρωταθλήματος Darts (επί το ελληνικότερον βελάκια) -με την επωνυμία Darts Invitational Challenge-, μεταξύ των Simon The Wizard Whitlock και Mighty Michael van Gerwen, στο Στάδιο Docklands, σημαδεύτηκε από στιγμές χάους, όταν μερίδα 40 περίπου νεαρών, ως επί το πλείστον, θεατών, ντυμένων με πολύχρωμες εμφανίσεις, άρχισε να εκσφενδονίζει πλαστικά τραπέζια και καρέκλες, σχηματίζοντας μια πυραμίδα από τα αντικείμενα αυτά.

Ο αγώνας διακόπηκε για 15 με 20 περίπου λεπτά και καλέστηκε η αστυνομία η οποία κατάφερε να βγάλει έξω από το στάδιο τους μαινόμενους νεαρούς, ενώ και οι δύο αγωνιζόμενοι κάλεσαν τους θεατές και τους υπεύθυνους του χώρου να αποκατασταθεί η τάξη.

Από την αστυνομία έγινε γνωστό ότι δεν έγιναν συλλήψεις και και δεν σημειώθηκαν τραυματισμοί.

Αυστραλοί επιστήμονες εντόπισαν την πρωτεΐνη που τους «καλλιεργεί».

Ερευνητές του Ινστιτούτου Walter and Eliza Hall της Μελβούρνης, δηλώνουν αισιόδοξοι καθώς βρήκαν ότι μία συγκεκριμένη πρωτεΐνη είναι υπεύθυνη για την αντίσταση που δείχνουν κάποιοι καρκίνοι του αίματος όταν ο ασθενής υποβάλλεται σε σχετικές θεραπείες.

Η πρωτεΐνη που θεωρούν ένοχη για την αντοχή των καρκινικών κυττάρων στους καρκίνους του αίματος είναι η MCL-1.

Κατά τα πειράματα που διεξήγαγαν σε χοιρίδια οι επιστήμονες εισήγαγαν στον οργανισμό τους καρκινικά κύτταρα και στην συνέχεια απομόνωσαν απ’ αυτά την πρωτεΐνη MCL – 1. Αυτό που ανακάλυψαν στην συνέχεια ήταν ότι τα καρκινικά κύτταρα εξαφανίστηκαν και το ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα των χοιριδίων είχε καταφέρει να τα εξουθενώσει.

Οι επιστήμονες του Ινστιτούτου είχαν ήδη εντοπίσει ότι η πρωτεΐνη αυτή ρυθμίζει την ζωή των κυττάρων και έπαιζε σπουδαίο ρόλο στην διατήρηση και των καρκινικών κυττάρων. Μάλιστα πιστεύουν ότι αν τελικά καταφέρουν να απομονώσουν την λειτουργία αυτής της πρωτεΐνης στον ανθρώπινο οργανισμό, δεν θα είναι μόνο οι καρκίνοι του αίματος που θα μπορούν να «πολεμήσουν» αλλά και άλλου τύπου καρκίνοι.

Η σχετική έρευνα δημοσιεύεται στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό «Blood» και οι επιστήμονες θα εστιάσουν τις επόμενες έρευνές τους στο να βρουν κάποιο φάρμακο που να απομονώνει την συγκεκριμένη πρωτεΐνη από τον οργανισμό σε άτομα που πάσχουν ήδη από καρκίνο.

Αυτό ζητά ο γεν. Εισαγγελέας Ν.Ν. Ουαλίας με αφορμή την επίθεση στο Martin Place.

Το αίτημά του για χορήγηση αποζημίωσης στα θύματα τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων εντός της χώρας, εφάμιλλης αυτής που λαμβάνουν όσοι Αυστραλοί πέσουν θύματα τέτοιων επιθέσεων στο εξωτερικό, έστειλε εγγράφως στην ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση, ο γεν. εισαγγελέας της Ν.Ν. Ουαλίας, Brad Hazzard.

O κ. Hazzard ζητά όσοι πέφτουν θύματα τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων στην Αυστραλία να έχουν πρόσβαση στο ειδικό ταμείο αποζημιώσεων που προσφέρει πλήρη κάλυψη στα θύματα παρομοίων επιθέσεων στο εξωτερικό, κάτι που αυτή τη στιγμή δεν συμβαίνει.

Σύμφωνα με τα όσα ισχύουν αυτήν την στιγμή, οι συγγενείς των θυμάτων της επίθεσης στο Martin Place του Σίδνεϊ, δικαιούνται να λάβουν πολύ λίγα χρήματα (το ανώτερο $15,000, συν κάποια χρήματα για έξοδα κηδείας), ενώ στην περίπτωση που αυτή η επίθεση συνέβαινε εκτός Αυστραλίας θα ελάμβαναν ο καθένας $75,000.

Στην περίπτωση των ανθρώπων που απλώς έπεσαν θύματα ομηρίας, η αποζημίωση που προβλέπεται από τη σχετική νομοθεσία της Ν. Ν. Ουαλίας να λάβουν είναι μόλις $1,500.

«Τα όσα συνέβησαν στο Martin Place, προκάλεσαν πολλά ερωτηματικά για το πώς μπορούμε καλύτερα να προστατεύσουμε και στηρίξουμε τους πολίτες μας ενόψει του φαινομένου του παγκόσμιου εξτρεμισμού. Το θέμα είναι σοβαρό και δεν είναι σωστό οι πολίτες μας να αντιμετωπίζονται διαφορετικά αν πέσουν θύματα εντός της χώρας» ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά ο κ. Hazzard.

Υπενθυμίζουμε ότι στα μέσα Δεκεμβρίου ο 34χρονος, Τόρι Τζόνσον, διευθυντής της καφετέριας Lindt, που βρισκόταν στο Martin Place και η 38χρονη δικηγόρος, Κατρίνα Ντόουσον, που κρατούνταν όμηροι με άλλους συνολικά 17 ανθρώπους από τον 50χρονο αυτοαποκαλούμενο ιερέα, Μαν Μαρόν Μονίς, σκοτώθηκαν κατά την έφοδο της αστυνομίας στους χώρους της καφετέριας μετά από 16 ώρες ομηρίας.

Άλλα, τέσσερα άτομα τραυματίσθηκαν κατά την έφοδο των αστυνομικών.

Στη σύσταση του κ. Hazzard αρνήθηκε, πάντως, να απαντήσει ο ομοσπονδιακός ομόλογός του, κ. George Brandis.

The opening of the legal year is but a time for renewal and recommitment.

On Tuesday 3 February 2015 at 9.00 am an Eastern Orthodox service will be held at St Eustathios Greek Orthodox Church, 221 Dorcas Street South Melbourne, to mark the opening of the 2015 legal year.

The service will be a collaboration of the Greek, Antiochian, Russian, Serbian, and Romanian Orthodox Churches. It is expected to finish by 9.45 am, and will be followed by morning tea in the church hall.

Judicial officers, tribunal members, court officials and members of the legal profession will enter the church in procession from the church hall. Judges and barristers will be wearing their official robes and wigs.

Celebrating the opening of the legal year is an ancient tradition which originated in Paris in 1245. A Catholic mass was held in the Notre Dame Cathedral to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit over the Ecclesiastical Court judges. The Holy Spirit was considered the source of wisdom, understanding, counsel and fortitude. Later in France, the mass was celebrated in honour of the patron saint of lawyers, St Yves of Brittany, canonised in 1347. (The Eastern Orthodox patron saint of lawyers is St Dionysius the Areopagite whose Feast Day is celebrated on 3 October.)

The mass crossed the Channel in 1310, during the reign of King Edward II, and landed at Westminster Abbey. All the judges and barristers attended the mass on the first day of the first term of the legal year, known in England as Michaelmas term. They celebrated the inauguration of the new legal year, and sought divine guidance for their work. The practice of holding the mass stopped during the Reformation in the 16th century, when the Church of England broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. The mass was revived in England in 1897, and it returned to Westminster Abbey in 1904.

The mass came to be known as the Red Mass, because of the red vestments worn by the priests. The priests wore red to symbolise the tongues of fire that descended on the Apostles at Pentecost, those flames being the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Senior judges wore red robes and the barristers wore red hoods, to make for a cathedral/abbey resplendent in red.

In the English tradition, judges proceeded in their formal robes on foot from Temple Bar to Westminster Abbey for a religious service, followed by the Lord Chancellor’s breakfast in Westminster Hall.

The first Red Mass in Australia was held at Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral on 16 February 1931.

Since 2008 a community gathering has also been held to celebrate how the community and the legal system work together towards achieving a just society.

Today, ceremonies and religious services to mark the opening of the legal year in Australia are attended by governors, judges, senior ministers and other politicians, consular officials, academics, religious leaders and lawyers who seek guidance and blessings for the year to come. In the religious services, prayers and blessings focus on the roles and responsibilities of the leaders present. They reflect on the part they play in the administration of justice and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and blessings of strength, wisdom, truth and justice for the legal system.

As the Honourable Marilyn Warren, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, said at the 2008 community gathering:

“Those committed to the law take the opening of the legal year as the time to recommit to fairness and impartiality and revive their courage to maintain and apply the law.

In reality, there is no opening of the legal year. The law is always open. The opening is merely a temporal marker to pause momentarily to consider what the law is about and our individual roles in it.

The opening of the legal year is but a time for renewal and recommitment.”

In 2015, in addition to the Eastern Orthodox service at 9.00 am on Tuesday 3 February at St Eustathios Greek Orthodox Church, three other events will be held on the morning of 2 February 2015, which is officially the first day upon which the courts will resume full-time operation for 2015. The three events are a multi-faith gathering, which will be held at Government House, a Catholic Red Mass, which will be conducted at St Patrick’s Cathedral and a community gathering, which will take place at the County Court.

Lemnos Gallipoli memorial commissioned The memorial statue consists of a larger than life-size nurse and injured soldier, on top of a sandstone plinth, on which will be engraved the names of many of the Lemnos villages visited by the Anzacs.

At their final meeting for the year, Lee Tarlamis, their president, informed the committee that sufficient funds had been raised to commission the memorial.

Melbourne’s Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee celebrated the end of 2014 with the formal commissioning of its memorial to the role of Lemnos in Australia’s Gallipoli story.

Neos Kosmos recently interviewed committee president Lee Tarlamis, committee secretary Jim Claven and sculptor Peter Corlett to learn of its success.

At their final meeting for the year, Lee Tarlamis, their president, informed the committee that sufficient funds had been raised to commission the memorial.

The committee has raised more than $200,000 towards their memorial project. Further funds are still needed to complete the memorial and its associated projects.

Mr Tarlamis said the committee had been successful in its various funding submissions, and had received funding from all levels of government. The committee had also received significant donations from two trade unions in honour of their former members who fought at Gallipoli.

“It is particularly fitting that the memorial will recognise the service of Corporal George Knight, an electrician from Albert Park, who lies buried on Lemnos. Our memorial will recognise the role of Australia’s nurses and ordinary diggers, like George,” Mr Tarlamis said.

He pointed to the support from the local Greek community, both from organisations and individuals. He especially thanked the Lemnian Community of Victoria, the Hellenic RSL Sub-Branch, the Pontiaki Estia, Coburg’s Marble Centre Exclusive, as well as Terry Paule and Nick and Sophie Kambouris for their support.

He also thanked all those individuals across the Victorian community who have supported the work of the Committee through purchasing its $5 memorial badges, $10 posters and other fundraising products, as well as those who have attended functions and events.

The memorial statue consists of a larger than life-size nurse and injured soldier, on top of a sandstone plinth, on which will be engraved the names of many of the Lemnos villages visited by the Anzacs. The inscriptions will be in Greek and English. The memorial will be completed by the addition of an information board and two flag poles.

The sculptures have been designed by and are being created by Australia’s pre-eminent commemorative sculptor, Peter Corlett, OAM.

Mr Corlett, who has commenced production of the sculptures, has long been inspired by the sculpture of classical Greece and his design will resonate with those familiar with the bronzes of ancient Greece. He said that this would also be reflective of the references to ancient Greece in the writings of many of the Anzacs in 1915.

It is the intention of the committee for the memorial to be unveiled at a major ceremony on Saturday 8th August 2015 – one hundred years to the day since the Australian nurses arrived on Lemnos to help the wounded and sick soldiers.

The committee is also raising funds to publish a major commemorative publication in conjunction with the memorial.

The publication will contain some of the hundreds of images the Anzacs took in 1915; of their arrival at Lemnos’ Mudros Bay, their preparations for the landings in the waters and beaches of Lemnos, the massive soldier’s camp at Sarpi, the hospitals around Mudros and the cemeteries of Portianou and East Mudros. Most importantly, it will tell the story of the interactions between the locals and the Anzacs.

The book is being written by historian and Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee secretary, Mr Jim Claven.

Mr Claven said that there was no existing publication that has focused on reproducing the amazing images from the Lemnos archive and put these in the context of the Lemnos Anzac story, using the words of the soldiers and nurses who were there, including the interaction between the Australians and the local Lemnian villagers.

“For too long the Lemnos story has been all but ignored in the re-telling of the Gallipoli story. Now is the time to tell the Lemnos story – to honour the service of those who served there in 1915 and those that remain buried there,” Mr Claven said.

Significant funding is needed to make this publication a reality and Mr Tarlamis urged the community to support the publication project.

The committee has also been working with the authorities in Lemnos and Athens to confirm arrangements for the commemorative activities that will be held on the island in 2015. Mr Tarlamis urged all those interested in going to Europe to commemorate the Anzac story to come to Lemnos in April 2015.
“The events planned on Lemnos in April will be memorable – involving the Greek and Australian authorities. While details are being finalised, these will be the best Anzac commemorations ever held on the island.”

Mr Claven will be leading commemorative tours of Greece in 2015, including tours of Lemnos’ unique Anzac-related sites in April.

Mr Tarlamis announced that the next fundraising event to be held will be a photographic display of some of the famous images the Anzacs took while on Lemnos.

“These images tell a thousand stories. We are trying to right a historic wrong by giving them a wide viewing, to show them to a new generation who can now appreciate the role of Lemnos in the lives of the Anzacs and this historic connection between Australia and Greece,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis said that the unveiling of the new memorial, the publication of a major new commemorative Lemnos Gallipoli book and the events on Lemnos in April 2015 will be major steps in the well-deserved recognition of Lemnos’ role in the Anzac story.

Mr Claven added that the committee hoped that the activities and events will have a lasting legacy for both Australia, Lemnos and Greece.

“Through the commemoration of the service of those Australian nurses and soldiers who came to Lemnos in 1915, we hope to reinforce the deep bonds between Greece and Australia. And hopefully create a path for many Australians to discover and retrace our Anzac links in Greece,” he said.
