Ο 19χρονος Αυστραλός τουρίστας, Γκραντ Νίκολας Ουρανί, αμέσως μετά τον τραυματισμό του

Ο 19χρονος Αυστραλός τουρίστας, Γκραντ Νίκολας Ουρανί, ο οποίος τραυματίστηκε ελαφρά από πυροβολισμό, κατά τη σύλληψη του Νίκου Μαζιώτη στο Μοναστηράκι στις 17 Ιουλίου, θα προσφύγει στη δικαιοσύνη για να διεκδικήσει αποζημίωση.

Σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του δικηγορικού γραφείο που εκπροσωπεί τον 19χρονο Αυστραλό, ο πελάτης του «τραυματίστηκε σοβαρά και δεν του προσφέρθηκε σωστή ιατρική φροντίδα σε νοσοκομείο της Αθήνας».

Στην ανακοίνωση σημειώνεται ,ότι ο Γκραντ συνεχίζει τη θεραπεία του στη Μελβούρνη και δεν μπορεί να παίξει ερασιτεχνικό φούτμπολ, λόγω του τραυματισμού του.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι ο Γκραντ τραυματίστηκε από σφαίρα του Μαζιώτη, αλλά η μήνυση, σύμφωνα με τον δικηγόρο του θα κατατεθεί σε βάρος της… ελληνικής κυβέρνησης από την οποία θα αξιώσει και την αποζημίωση.

Όπως αναφέρθηκε τότε, θραύσματα από σφαίρα είχαν βρει στο πόδι τον Γκραντ που μεταφέρθηκε στον «Ερυθρό Σταυρό», δίχως όμως να αντιμετωπίζει σοβαρό πρόβλημα.
Ο ίδιος φέρεται να είχε δηλώσει τότε: «Είχα καθίσει για φαγητό όταν είδα κάποιον να τρέχει και να τον κυνηγά η αστυνομία. Στη συνέχεια άκουσα τρεις πυροβολισμούς. Μετά τον πρώτο, έπεσα στο έδαφος και με σκυμμένο το κεφάλι προσπάθησα να συρθώ στο εστιατόριο. Πήγε να πυροβολήσει τους αστυνομικούς αλλά χτύπησε εμένα».
Τρεις υπουργοί είχαν επισκεφθεί τον Γκραντ στο νοσοκομείο, ο υπουργός Δημόσιας Τάξης, Β. Κικίλιας, όπως επίσης και οι υπουργοί Υγείας και Τουρισμού, Μάκης Βορίδης και Όλγα Κεφαλογιάννη.

Βέβαιη θεωρείται η συμμετοχή της Αυστραλίας στις επιδρομές των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων στα αστικά και μη κρησφύγετα των τζιχαντιστών του Ισλαμικού Κράτους στη Συρία και το Ιράκ.Ο πρωθυπουργός, Tony Abbott, που επέστρεψε από το ταξίδι του στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής, αναμένεται να ανακοινώσει εντός των επομένων ωρών την απόφαση της κυβέρνησης να διατάξει τη συμμετοχή στις επιχειρήσεις διάλυσης του Ισλαμικού Κράτους, των αυστραλιανών, πολεμικών αεροπλάνων που σταθμεύουν στα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα.

Η εντολή θα δοθεί μετά την τυπική έγκριση της κυβερνητικής πρότασης από το υπουργικό συμβούλιο, την Επιτροπή Εθνικής Άμυνας και Ασφάλειας και την ενημέρωση της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης. Οι μεμονωμένες φωνές αντίδρασης στην κυβέρνηση και την αντιπολίτευση, όπως και η αντίδραση των Πρασίνων στη συμμετοχή της Αυστραλίας σε επιχειρήσεις χωρίς προκαθορισμένο στόχο και διάρκεια δεν πρόκειται να επηρεάσουν τη διαδικασία, ιδιαίτερα μετά την απόφαση και της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας να συμμετάσχει στις επιχειρήσεις.

Η υπουργός Εξωτερικών, Julie Bishop, δήλωσε χθες στο πρόγραμμα Insiders του ABC, ότι εντός της εβδομάδος θα συνεδριάσει το Συμβούλιο Εθνικής Άμυνας και Ασφάλειας.

«Επικοινώνησα σήμερα (χθες) το πρωί με τον πρωθυπουργό και εκτιμώ, ότι το Συμβούλιο θα συνεδριάσει εντός της εβδομάδος. Οι επικεφαλής των ενόπλων δυνάμεων και των υπηρεσιών πληροφοριών και ασφάλειας θα ενημερώσουν την κυβέρνηση για την κατάσταση, ενώ ο πρωθυπουργός και εγώ θα μεταφέρουμε όσα ακούσαμε και μάθαμε κατά τις συνεδριάσεις του ΟΗΕ» είπε η υπουργός.

Η κ. Bishop εξήγησε, ότι η αυστραλιανή δύναμη θα βοηθήσει την κυβέρνηση του Ιράκ, δεν θα συμμετάσχει στις επιδρομές τη Συρία. «Μας ζητήθηκε να βοηθήσουμε το Ιράκ και αυτό θα πράξουμε. Οι επιχειρήσεις στη Συρία είναι άλλη υπόθεση» τόνισε.

ΑΜΕΡΙΚΑΝΟΙ ΠΡΑΚΤΟΡΕΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΥΣΤΡΑΛΙΑ

Εν τω μεταξύ, πράκτορες των αμερικανικών υπηρεσιών Ασφαλείας βρίσκονται στην Αυστραλία για να αξιολογήσουν τις πληροφορίες που συνέλεξαν οι Αυστραλοί συνάδελφοί τους την περασμένη εβδομάδα, κατά τη διάρκεια επιδρομών, σε κατοικίες υπόπτων για τρομοκρατική δράση σε προάστια του Σίδνεϊ και της Βρισβάνης.
Κατά την εφημερίδα «Herald-Sun» οι λεπτομέρειες «της συνεργασίας» αποκαλύφθηκαν κατά την επίσκεψη του κ. Abbott στις αντι-τρομοκρατικές υπηρεσίες της FBI και της αστυνομίας της Νέας Υόρκης. Κατά την εφημερίδα, ο Αυστραλός πρωθυπουργός «ενημερώθηκε» από τις δύο αρχές για θέματα αντιτρομοκρατίας, καθώς η Αυστραλία λαμβάνει έξτρα μέτρα προστασίας του κοινού από τυχόν τρομοκρατική επίθεση.

Στον τελικό φούτμπολ της Μελβούρνης και τον ημιτελικό Ράγκμπι του Σίδνεϊ, η παρουσία της αστυνομίας ήταν έντονη και οι έλεγχοι των θεατών αυστηροί κατά την είσοδό τους στα γήπεδα. Παράλληλα, η ηγεσία των ενόπλων δυνάμεων εξέδωσε εντολή στα μέλη όλων των όπλων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των ειδικών δυνάμεων, να κρατούν χαμηλό προφίλ και να αποφεύγουν αν φορούν στολές ή άλλα διακριτικά στις δημόσιες εμφανίσεις του.

ΑΠΟΛΥΤΗ ΗΡΕΜΙΑ ΣΤΗΝ ΚΗΔΕΙΑ ΤΟΥ HAIDER

Σε ατμόσφαιρα πλήρους ηρεμίας κηδεύτηκε την περασμένη Παρασκευή ο 18χρονος μουσουλμάνος, Numan Haider, που την περασμένη Τρίτη επιτέθηκε με μαχαίρι και απείλησε να σκοτώσει δύο αστυνομικούς, έξω από το αστυνομικό τμήμα Endeavour Hill, πριν τον τραυματίσει θανάσιμα ο ένας από τους δύο αστυνομικούς. Η μαζική παρουσία των μέσων ενημέρωσης, δεν απασχόλησε ιδιαίτερα τις εκατοντάδες συγγενών, φίλων και γνωστών του Haider και της οικογενείας του, που τον συνόδευσαν στην τελευταία κατοικία του.

Εξάλλου, ο υπαρχηγός της Αστυνομίας της Βικτωρίας, Graham Ashton, υποβάθμισε εκτιμήσεις για σχέδιο του Haider «να αιφνιδιάσει» τους αστυνομικούς που επρόκειτο να συναντήσει.Σε συνεντεύξεις του ο αρχηγός της αστυνομίας Ken Lay δήλωνε, ότι ο 18χρονος Haider συνομιλούσε με γνωστούς του, πριν συναντήσει τους δύο αστυνομικούς, δήλωση που ενίσχυσε τις φήμες για ύπαρξη σχεδίου αιφνιδιασμού των δύο αστυνομικών.

«Δεν αποκλείουμε τίποτα, καθώς οι έρευνες για το περιστατικό συνεχίζονται. Ο νεκρός (Haider) συνομιλούσε με κάποιους πριν το περιστατικό, όμως η συνομιλία αυτή δεν θα πρέπει να ερμηνευτεί ως σχέδιο αιφνιδιασμού των αστυνομικών». Ο κ. Ashton πρόσθεσε, ότι «οι γονείς του Haider έχουν πάθει σοκ από το περιστατικό και ζητούν απαντήσεις στο ερώτημα, πώς και από ποιους φανατίστηκε ο γιος τους».

Η Αστυνομία ερευνά και πιθανή σχέση του Haider με το Ισλαμικό Κέντρο του Springvale, Al-Farquan Islamic Centre, το οποίον απασχόλησε τις αντι-τρομοκρατικές υπηρεσίες της Αυστραλίας το 2012. Η διεύθυνση του Κέντρου τονίζει σε ανακοίνωσή της, ότι ο Haider δεν είχε σχέση με το Κέντρο και το διευθυντή του.

ΔΕΝ ΚΙΝΔΥΝΕΥΕΙΗ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ

Η Αστυνομία και η πολιτική ηγεσία της Βικτωρίας επιμένουν, ότι δεν διατρέχουμε κίνδυνο τρομοκρατικής επίθεσης. Στο τέλος της περασμένης εβδομάδας ο πρωθυπουργός της Βικτωρίας, Denis Napthine, o αρχηγός της αστυνομίας, Ken Lay, και o μεγάλος μουφτής των μουσουλμάνων της Αυστραλίας κάνουν έκκληση για «ψυχραιμία και αμοιβαία ανοχή», φοβούμενοι αντίποινα από θερμοκέφαλους μουσουλμάνους και μη.Οι αρχές και οι υπηρεσίες που ερευνούν το «περιστατικό Haider» πιστεύουν, ότι η ευρύτερη κοινωνία δεν απειλείται από τρομοκρατική επίθεση.

Ο υπαρχηγός Ashton διέψευσε την πληροφορία ότι ο Haider «έψαχνε» στο διαδίκτυο το πρόγραμμα επίσκεψης στη Μελβούρνη του πρωθυπουργού, Tony Abbott.

ΠΟΛΥ ΣΚΛΗΡΗΝΟΜΟΘΕΣΙΑ

Εν τω μεταξύ, η κοινοπολιτειακή Γερουσία ψήφισε την περασμένη Πέμπτη το κυβερνητικό νομοσχέδιο διεύρυνσης των εξουσιών των υπηρεσιών Πληροφοριών και Εθνικής Ασφάλειας της χώρας ASIO και ASIS.Ο νέος νόμος θα περιλαμβάνει, συν τοις άλλοις, διάταξη για δεκαετή φυλάκιση ατόμου ή ατόμων που θα αποκαλύπτουν την ταυτότητα πρακτόρων του ASIO ή του ASIS ή θα δημοσιοποιούν πληροφορίες για έρευνες των προαναφερομένων υπηρεσιών στην Αυστραλία και το εξωτερικό, που κατέθεσε το κόμμα Palmer United Party (PUP).

Μάταια προσπάθησαν οι Πράσινοι και ο ανεξάρτητος γερουσιαστής, Νικ Ξενοφών, να πείσουν την κυβέρνηση και την αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση, ότι το νέο ποινολόγιο «φιμώνει» τα μέσα ενημέρωσης, που «επιζήτησε» να προστατεύσει την τροποποίηση του Άρθρου 18C, του Νόμου περί Φυλετικών Διακρίσεων.
Μάταια απέβη, επίσης, και η προσπάθεια των Πρασίνων και ανεξάρτητων γερουσιαστών να ενσωματώσουν στο νομοσχέδιο πρόβλεψη, για δέσμευση του ASIO να ενημερώνει για πρωτοβουλίες που αναλαμβάνει.

Ο Νόμος θα καταστήσει ευκολότερη την πρόσβαση την πρόσβαση των υπηρεσιών ασφαλείας και πληροφοριών σε ιδιωτικούς υπολογιστές, την παρακολούθηση Αυστραλών πολιτών στο εξωτερικό, και τη συνεργασία του ASIO με το ASIS με περιορισμένη εποπτεία των προϊσταμένων τους.
Ακόμη, ο Νόμος απλοποιεί την έκδοση ενταλμάτων, καλύπτει μυστικές δραστηριότητες πρακτόρων του ASIO και επιτρέπε.

Με μια αναλυτική ανακοίνωση για τη θέση της Ελλάδας αναφορικά με το όνομα της ΠΓΔΜ, απάντησε το υπουργείο Εξωτερικών σε σχετικά δημοσιεύματα, υπογραμμίζοντας παράλληλα ότι «ορισμένοι ακραίοι κύκλοι παριστάνουν τον ανήξερο ή τον έκπληκτο ωσάν να πληροφορήθηκαν τώρα – από την ομιλία του αντιπροέδρου της κυβέρνησης και υπουργού Εξωτερικών στη φετινή Γενική Συνέλευση του ΟΗΕ – τη θέση της χώρας για το όνομα της ΠΓΔΜ».

Στην ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Εξωτερικών υπενθυμίζεται ότι:

«Η θέση της Ελλάδος υπέρ ενός σύνθετου ονόματος με γεωγραφικό προσδιορισμό πριν τη λέξη “Μακεδονία” και όχι πριν τη λέξη “Δημοκρατία” που θα χρησιμοποιείται έναντι πάντων (erga omnes), για κάθε χρήση, εσωτερική και διεθνή, έχει διαμορφωθεί εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, έχει κατ’ επανάληψη δηλωθεί στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων και διεθνώς σε πολυμερείς και διμερείς συναντήσεις. Επί τη βάσει της θέσης αυτής μετέχει ο Έλληνας εκπρόσωπος στη διαδικασία του ΟΗΕ υπό τον κ. Νίμιτς».

Παράλληλα, σημειώνεται, «ότι η προσωρινή ονομασία (Πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβική Δημοκρατία της Μακεδονίας – Τhe former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), υπό την οποία εντάχθηκε η γειτονική μας χώρα στον ΟΗΕ το 1993 και με την οποία μετέχει σε πλήθος διεθνών οργανισμών, δράσεων και συναντήσεων, είναι μια σύνθετη ονομασία με επιθετικούς προσδιορισμούς πριν τη λέξη “Δημοκρατία” και όχι πριν τη λέξη “Μακεδονία”. Αυτή δε η συνθέτη προσωρινή ονομασία δεν χρησιμοποιείται έναντι πάντων (erga omnes), αλλά στους διεθνείς οργανισμούς και στις συναντήσεις και δράσεις που αυτοί οργανώνουν και διμερώς με μεγάλο αριθμό χωρών, αλλά δυστυχώς όχι εσωτερικά, όχι στα διαβατήρια και όχι διμερώς με όσες χώρες έχουν αναγνωρίσει την ΠΓΔΜ με τη λεγόμενη συνταγματική της ονομασία» .

Τέλος, υπογραμμίζεται ότι «αυτή είναι μια κατάσταση που παραβιάζει το διεθνές δίκαιο και πρέπει να αλλάξει. Η ελληνική υπεύθυνη και καθαρή θέση είναι η μόνη που οδηγεί στην αλλαγή της κατάστασης αυτής».

Winner of the prestigious 2013 Southern Highlands International Piano Competition (SHIPC), Greek pianist Konstantinos Destounis returns to Australia this October, for his much anticipated Australian concert series.

The Southern Highlands, Canberra and Sydney will have an opportunity to experience performances by this young pianist who, showing a maturity beyond his years, left Australian audiences spellbound when he performed with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra in the 2013 SHIPC.

Born in 1991 in Athens, Konstantinos Destounis is a pianist whose passion and devotion to music have led him to the international music scene. He is the receiver of numerous prizes, most notably the 1st prize in the Southern Highlands International Piano Competition 2013 in Australia and 2nd Prize in the Bremen European Piano Competition 2012. As the winner of the competition organised by the National Radio-Television, he represented Greece at the
Eurovision Young Musicians 2010 in Vienna.

Four Greek Australians have been singled out and personally thanked for their service to the Greek community in Victoria.

Sophia Borobokas, John Chrisomallis, Irene Papaioannou, Vasilia Tsousis all received a Multicultural Award of Excellence for their meritorious service to the community.

Mrs Papaioannou was specifically honoured for her work in Preston, while Mr Chrisomallis was awarded for his work in the Whittlesea Elderly Citizens Club.

Mr Chirsomallis was one of the founding members of the then Greek Community of Lalor, Epping and Thomastown, which was set up in 1972.

Its main aim was to teach young Greek children of the community the language and in its early years the school taught over 400 students.

Now as the president of the Elderly Citizens Club, Mr Chrisomallis has been able to keep the club open seven days a week to make sure the older members of the community have a place, or at least a ‘cafeneio’ to meet at.

The award came as quite a surprise, but Mr Chrisomallis says the recognition is very flattering.

“After so many years of volunteering, it’s nice being noticed for helping the community,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“It’s true that it makes you happy and it pushes you to keep going, to keep contributing.”

His nomination was backed by Whittlesea councillor Kris Pavlidis, who attended the awards night at Government House.

As an organisation, the Greek Orthodox community of Gippsland was also singled out. The Greek and Cypriot community has supported the young and elderly in the region, and has kept traditions alive with special social events and cultural days.

In its 15th year, the awards honoured a total of 73 individuals and 17 organisations in 10 categories.

Chairperson for the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Chin Tan says the awards rightfully congratulate the efforts of those who go out of their way to ensure Victoria is an inclusive state.

“The awards recognise the hard work that is taking place in numerous communities, small and large across Victoria, by people and organisations that are committed to the success of multiculturalism,” Mr Tan said.

“Over 24 multicultural communities from all over the state were represented in the dynamic pool of award recipients.”

Multilingual radio station SBS was also honoured for its work keeping multicultural communities informed.

SBS Radio is broadcast in 74 languages, including Greek, and produces 334 unique hours of programming each week from every state in Australia.

Led by former Christian pastor Daniel Nalliah, and in the presence of former Thatcher government advisor Lord Christopher Monckton, Rise Up Australia officially launched its Victorian state election campaign last week.

The party is running for the Senate with an inherently nationalistic election campaign line, with its political slogan ‘Keeping Australia Australian’ at the forefront of its policies.

The party’s line is exemplified by its anti-multicultural stance, preferring to take a ‘multi-ethnic’ political standpoint – the difference being (accordingly) that the latter embraces one Australian culture.

Mr Nalliah, who heralds from Sri Lanka, launched the party’s campaign making multiple references to God, following a collective prayer among party supporters, and a rendition of the Australian national anthem under a sea of Australian flags, which were raised throughout the address.

In his address, Mr Nalliah made multiple references to Islam, opening his own address with a reference to Islamic State.

He endorsed Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s reference to Islamic State as a death cult, and went one step further – “I call Islam the death cult”.

The party does not shy away from its contentious Islamic viewpoints, particularly in reference to Sharia law. Peter Vassiliou, a Greek and Cypriot
Australian Senate nominee for the party, reiterated his leader’s anti-multicultural perspective, to Neos Kosmos.

“Our goal is to keep Australia Australian. We oppose multiculturalism, but support a multi-ethnic Australia, where there are many races but one culture.

“We rejoice that Australia is multi-ethnic and that people have come here and free to celebrate their own diverse backgrounds, while respecting Australian culture and Australian laws.”

He said that ‘multiculturalism’ is multifaceted, which threatens Australia’s cultural and legal landscape.

“One of the problems is under the clause of multiculturalism, which is culture, religion and law. You’re branded as an intolerant racist if you refuse Muslims the right to their religion, mainly on the aspect of Sharia law, which basically halves the rights of women, encourages jihad and encourages ethnic enclaves where vast groups of people push out ‘infidels’ and create an atmosphere which is hostile to anyone that is not Muslim. We aim to create a society with peace and freedom.

“What we are saying is everyone can come in, just abide by Australian laws, which are basically the Magna Carta, bill of rights and the Ten Commandments.”

Australia, of course, does not have a legislated bill of rights.

When asked about whether his party is anti-multicultural or anti-Islamic, Mr Vassiliou referred to his understanding of the Koran in an attempt to distinguish the two.

Mr Vassiliou said he is trying to work closely with the Greek community to address issues that he says are plaguing elderly Greek Australians.
“A lot of the elderly Greek community expressed their concerns [to me] with gas bills, electricity bills, the cost of living and that their pension was not sufficient enough to cope with those pressures. So I definitely want to honour the elderly Greek community.”

“Rise Up Australia Party is committed to seeing all excessive taxes, duties and levies removed. We want to remove taxes and levies which are unnecessary and which are heavily pressuring and causing a lot of grief on Australian families and especially the Greek community.”

Mr Vassiliou said that his party is targeting grave social issues, including alcoholism, narcotic abuse, depression and suicide, and would work with current balance-of-power Victorian MP Geoff Shaw on contentious abortion issues.

Fairfax Media reported Mr Shaw was present at a subsequent Rise Up Australia gathering in his local seat of Frankston, where he opened the event and discussed his battles with the Napthine government.

More than 1,000 antique coins and dozens of weapons have been seized during a raid on a residence in Imathia, northern Greece, police said Monday.

During the raid in the village of Alexandria, police found 1,061 copper coins, the majority of which have been identified by experts as dating from the 3rd-1st century BC, the Byzantine period and the Ottoman Empire.

The haul also included 30 silver coins from the same periods, 16 copper rings and other Byzantine and post-Byzantine era jewelry, as well as a collection of 16 revolvers and rifles.

The owner of the property, a 72-year-old man who has been charged with antiquities smuggling in the past, was arrested.

A 19-year-old Australian tourist who was injured during a shootout between police and fugitive terrorist Nikos Maziotis in central Athens in July is suing the Greek state for failing to provide him with proper medical treatment.

Grant Nicholas Urani was one of two tourists caught in the crossfire between Maziotis and police in the central Athenian district of Monastiraki while officers were chasing the wanted terrorist.

He sustained a light leg injury and claims that he had to undergo additional treatment in his hometown Melbourne after being treated at an Athens hospital. According to his lawyers, his injury is preventing him from pursuing his athletic interests.

“I sat down to eat when I saw someone running and being chased by the police. Then I heard three shots. After the first, I fell to the ground and tried to crawl towards the restaurant. Maziotis tried to shoot the officers who were chasing him, but he hit me,” Urani had stated in the aftermath of the shootout.

Maziotis was spotted on July 16 by officers in a store on central Athinas Street near Monastiraki, one of the capital’s most popular tourist areas.

He shot at officers as he fled, injuring Urani and a German national.

The Revolutionary Struggle group leader was apprehended shortly afterward.

The fifth, and probably final, review of Greece’s economic reform progress by the troika is set to begin with Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis to meet foreign envoys on Tuesday morning while Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his coalition partner Evangelos Venizelos will meet later in the day to discuss strategy in an increasingly tense political climate.

According to a high-ranking source at the Finance Ministry, “all issues will be broached” in the meeting between Hardouvelis and the troika mission chiefs which is to start at 11.30 a.m. Troika sources indicated that the agenda of this review would be “heavier” than previous ones, with reports of at least 700 pending actions.

Troika envoys are also due to meet on Tuesday with several other key cabinet members including Health Minister Makis Voridis and Environment and Energy Minister Yiannis Maniatis. Talks with Development Minister Nikos Dendias are scheduled for Wednesday, with Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis to meet the auditors on Thursday.

The first issue on the agenda of Hardouvelis’s talks with the troika is the draft budget, with the two sides expected to disagree about the size of Greece’s primary surplus, and discussions about possible measures to plug the gap likely to take place. A consensus will be needed before October 6, when the draft budget is to go to Parliament.

Mitsotakis’s meeting will focus on the 6,500 civil servants who must be dismissed by the end of this year, while Dendias is expected to present the foreign auditors with a proposal for corporate debt arrangement.

Ahead of his talks with the troika, Vroutsis is due to visit the headquarters of the International Labor Organization in Geneva on Tuesday. Vroutsis has asked the ILO to assess the effectiveness of potential changes to current laws governing layoffs in the private sector. He is also to seek a compromise with labor unions and employers’ associations for proposed changes to Greek laws governing trade unions, and he is expected to come under pressure by the troika for a second reform of the pension system.

As troika envoys hold talks with the various ministers today, Samaras and Venizelos are to meet in the afternoon in a bid to finalize the government’s strategy and their so-called “red lines” in negotiations.

The talks come as political tensions peak amid mounting speculation about early elections as the ruling coalition appears unable to garner the necessary 180 votes in the 300-seat Parliament to back its candidate for president in February when the term of incumbent Karolos Papoulias ends.

Yesterday government spokesperson Sofia Voultepsi once again rebuffed rumors about snap polls in November while Voridis noted that failure to resolve the issue with the 180 seats would simply perpetuate a pre-election climate.

Another prominent conservative, Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzicostas, caused waves meanwhile by proposing the creation of an emergency unity government, without Samaras at its helm, in a bid to solve the 180 MP conundrum.
