South Melbourne Hellas hoping for some divine intervention

South hoping for some divine intervention

South Melbourne club president Leo Athanasakis will be visiting the local Greek Orthodox Church in Hobart just to have all bases covered in the NPL finals match.

For Leo Athanasakis, it doesn’t hurt to go the extra mile to ensure a win.

Travelling to Hobart this weekend, the South Melbourne club president says he’ll be paying a visit to the local Greek Orthodox Church, hoping to inspire some divine intervention to get the team over the line.

“I’m meeting the Greek orthodox priest and he’s promised me he’ll give us a blessing,” he tells Neos Kosmos in all seriousness.
South Melbourne is the only Greek sponsored team to make it into the NPL finals series they don’t want to take any chances.

They’ve already garnered the help of fellow Greek Australian team Hobart Olympic, who have offered South their pitch for training and any insider knowledge on their opponents, South Hobart.

The going will be tough. South Hobart have won the last seven state championships and made it to the NPL national grand final last year. They narrowly missed the national title, losing out 2-0 to Sydney United.

The South Melbourne boys arrived in Hobart on Friday, a day early to get themselves settled and focused. They might be playing it cautious but it means they will have as much confidence in their game as possible.

Captain Michael Eagar says the used their last NPLV match to bond and work on the team dynamic.

“We’re very confident, we’ve come off the back of VPL success in the season and we played on the weekend up to Goulburn, it was a good bonding session, it was a long bus trip there and we came back with a result,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

They beat Goulburn Valley Suns 4-1, a great result to keep the team in good spirits. They also kept a few players off the pitch to ensure they’ll be available for Sunday’s match.

Coach Chris Taylor is quietly confident, and sees the national Cup as a way to get his players abilities noticed.

“It’s a big challenge to play at national level, most of the players have got aspirations of playing in the A-League so it’s their opportunity to show they can play,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

One of the main aims for the NPL was to create a stronger link between the A-League and the state leagues. Football Federation Australia introduced the league to make pathways more concrete, and give clubs incentives for training players that are good enough to be picked up by the top tier.

FFA CEO David Gallop says it’s already been working, with Central Coast Mariners’ Glen Trifiro being signed directly after his NPL finals results.

“It’s a way of connecting the big state competitions with the A-League, its an opportunity to make sure those pathways exist in those clubs and as such are a critical engine rooms for footballers,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

Speaking at the launch of the NPL finals series, Mr Gallop said grassroots football is the heart and soul of football in Australia and must be nurtured.

At least now, with three National Cups in the works, one for the top tier A-League, one for the second tier NPL and one for every single club in Australia, the FFA Cup, the hierarchy is becoming less noticeable.

Economides talks start ups in Melbourne

Economides talks start ups in Melbourne

HACCI’s Young Professional Network sees big name headline its first events.

Renown brand strategist Peter Economides was in Melbourne last week to give a select few young Greek Australian invaluable tips on starting their own businesses.

As part of the first events for the HACCI Young Professionals Network (HYPN), Mr Economides spoke at two events, one a private 30 person masterclass on branding and the other an open lecture at Swinburne University on start ups.

The masterclass had Mr Economides speaking praise for the bright young minds in the Greek Australian community.

“I’ve been very impressed with the talent I’ve seen among the Hellenic Australian youth here this weekend and look forward to hearing of their future endeavours,” he said.

He spoke about the importance of creating a strong brand to back up great product ideas, indicating how brands that he’s worked for, including Coca Cola and Apple create a culture around their products.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it,” he said.

“You don’t sell a product, you sell your business’ culture. This is what the world’s most successful brands do so well.”

At the one hour lecture, Mr Economides was part of an interactive panel comprising of industry leading Swinburne academics.

HYPN convenor Ashley Nasiakos, who organised the two events in conjunction with Swinburne University says he hopes to follow up the success of the first events with more programs for the growing network.

“It’s been an incredibly successful series of events and we look forward to following it up with the launch of the HYPN mentoring program later in the year,” he said.

Hellenic Cultural Centre opens with a bang

Cultural Centre opens with a bang

With a special blessing from Bishop Ezekiel, the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture is now open.

More than 2000 Greek Australians packed the Lonsdale Street Greek precinct on Sunday to see the new Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture launched with a bang.

President of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) Bill Papastergiadis fought back tears while addressing the crowd, speaking of a new period for the Greek Australian community.

“This is a new chapter in the renaissance of Greek Australian Victoria” he said.

“A building in which to engage and redefine our identity.”

He said the building is the largest undertaken by any Greek community of the diaspora and will act as an example of what can be achieved.

Bishop Ezekiel was on hand to bless the building, while both sides of politics showed their support, with Premier Denis Napthine and opposition leader Daniel Andrews in attendance.

Mr Andrews even tried his hand at speaking a bit of Greek to congratulate the community on this historic milestone, which was met with laughter and applause.

Greece’s Ambassador to Australia, Haris Dafaranos also relayed the Greek Government’s congratulations and said Prime Minster Antonis Samaras is very proud of the achievement of the GOCMV and of the Greek Australian community.

The 15 level building was open to all, but struggled under the crush of people. Lines heading to the lifts snaked up Lonsdale Street for hours, with people curious to see what the building has to offer.

Inside they were able to see new multi-purpose rooms, classrooms for the GOCMV language classes and rooms for future exhibitions. The pièce de résistance was the impressive rooftop space on the 13th floor.

For those not able to make it into the building, a music and dance program entertained the crowd, including dances from Melbourne’s Pontiaki Estia.

It was a fitting way to open the new building, harking back to the annual Londsale Street Greek Festival.

The old white three story building is now a thing of the past. It will now forever be replaced by an impressive glass building with a sneaky Discobolus on the façade, standing tall in the heart of the Greek precinct.

Manchester City rely on Frank Lampard’s late strike to deny Chelsea 1-1

Frank Lampard scored against his former club, Chelsea

Lampard scored a dramatic equaliser for Manchester City against Chelsea but his celebrations were muted. Photograph: Dave Thompson/PA

For a few seconds, Frank Lampard looked slightly overcome with awkwardness. He had been on the pitch only seven minutes, in his first home match for Manchester City, when the ball came to him in that position that used to be his trademark for Chelsea, back in the days when he was establishing himself as the most prolific scorer to pass through Stamford Bridge.

Lampard struck his shot cleanly, to the right of Thibaut Courtois, and what a way to introduce himself to his new crowd. Until that moment, it had been the away end serenading him. Now it was the City supporters and, incredibly, he might have gone on to win the match. This time, his shot struck his old mate, John Terry, prostrate on the turf, and Lampard was spared any more of the post-match apologies.

Yet City, a man down after Pablo Zabaleta’s red card, had been spared at a point when it looked like, once again, they were going to suffered at the hands of José Mourinho’s tactical expertise and come out with the same result from when these sides met here last season.

Courtois had been even more redundant than Petr Cech was in February and Chelsea, displaying all their powers of structure and resilience, had taken the lead five minutes after Zabaleta’s second yellow card when Eden Hazard crossed for André Schürrle to slide in from the position that would usually have been occupied by City’s right-back.

Zabaleta is a hero in these parts, afforded a standing ovation as he went, but the cries of “one-nil to the referee” felt like a crowd looking for an excuse that was not really there. Mike Dean had an erratic and sometimes bewildering game but a player of Zabaleta’s experience, already booked for bringing down Hazard, really ought to have known better than to have a couple of nibbles from behind at Diego Costa. His first was risky enough but the second connected with the back of Costa’s calves and Chelsea’s new signing is not the kind of man who accepts those indignations easily. Costa’s reaction inflamed the situation but the bottom line is Zabaleta put his team at risk.

In that respect, Mourinho will be aggrieved by the result particularly when he could also reflect on Costa striking the post just a few minutes before Lampard slashed in the equaliser.

Manchester Utd thrashed 5-3 by Leicester City

They didn’t see that coming. Photo: P

Leicester City completed a stunning comeback over Manchester United to snatch a memorable 5-3 win in the Barclays Premier League.

Leicester City completed a stunning comeback over Manchester United to snatch a memorable 5-3 win in the Barclays Premier League.

The hosts trailed 2-0 and 3-1 at the King Power Stadium but showed tremendous courage to rally for a first victory over United since 1998, having lost their previous nine Premier League meetings.

A week after seemingly kick-starting their Barclays Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, United got off to a flying start with early goals via the head of Robin van Persie and an exquisite Angel di Maria scoop. But Leicester had taken a point apiece from Arsenal and Everton at home before winning away at Stoke last time out, and displayed their top-flight credentials again.

Nigel Pearson’s charges responded almost immediately to Di Maria’s moment of magic, when their own Argentinian record signing Leonardo Ulloa nodded in. United upped the tempo after the break and capitalised on a sustained period of pressure when Ander Herrera deflected a Di Maria shot into the back of the net.

But the hosts would not lie down as a David Nugent penalty and Esteban Cambiasso’s low drive put them back on level terms. Jamie Vardy then kept his cool when put clear to make it 4-3 and Ulloa put the icing on the cake with another spot-kick after Tyler Blackett had fouled Vardy and got sent off. For Ulloa, it was his fifth Premier League goal in as many matches.

Radamel Falcao made his expected full United debut, replacing Juan Mata, with captain Wayne Rooney eased back into a slightly deeper role. Vardy was one of four changes for Leicester alongside former United trainee Danny Drinkwater, Cambiasso and the son of Old Trafford legend Peter Schmeichel, goalkeeper Kasper.

Schmeichel was called into early work after Van Persie was played through by Di Maria, but the goalkeeper could do nothing about the Dutchman’s deflected header from a superb Falcao cross which put the visitors ahead on 13 minutes.

The lead was doubled in sublime fashion three minutes later when Di Maria linked up with Rooney before the Argentina winger lifted a delightful effort over the helpless goalkeeper.

United were almost immediately caught cold at the other end when Vardy got to the byline and crossed for Ulloa to head home powerfully to David de Gea’s left.

The visitors suffered another setback when Jonny Evans limped off and was replaced by Chris Smalling with less than half an hour gone, but both defences just about managed to hold firm for the rest of a fast and furious first period.

Falcao went close to restoring United’s two-goal cushion at the start of the second half when controlling a Rooney pass and firing a half-volley against the crossbar, but it proved a temporary respite for Leicester.

It was Herrera who did claim the third when flicking a Di Maria strike from the edge of the area past a stranded Schmeichel on 57 minutes.

However, Leicester showed great heart to rally through a Nugent spot-kick after Rafael da Silva shoved over Vardy in the box and Cambiasso connected sweetly with a shot from just inside the area to level the scores just after the hour.

As United poured forward in search of a winner, they were caught short in defence. Mata, on as a substitute, was robbed by Ritchie De Laet, whose through-ball released Vardy. The former Fleetwood Town man kept his nerve to slot past De Gea one-on-one.

A mesmerising comeback was complete just four minutes later, as Vardy was allowed in on goal again and Blackett chopped him down in the penalty area, earning a straight red card and providing Ulloa the chance to cap a stunning outing for Leicester and a first home win in the top flight since May 2004.
