Skilled migration accounts for 68 per cent of the entire programme.

The Australian Government’s target of attracting 190,000 new migrants in the latest financial year has been achieved, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison announced this week.

The majority of the permanent migration visas (128,550 places) were granted within the skill stream. This equates to nearly 68 per cent of the entire programme.

“The skill stream is targeted towards helping fill identified skill shortages in the Australian economy,” Minister Morrison said. “In 2013-14, occupational professionals accounted for more than 63 per cent of visas granted in the skill stream, followed by technicians and trades workers with 22 per cent and managers with 9 per cent of skilled stream visa grants. These results are a major boost to the Australian economy.”

More than 60 per cent of skilled migration visas were delivered within the employer sponsored (47,450 places), business innovation and investment (6160 places) and state and territory government nominated (24,656 places) categories.

The family stream, which prioritised the reunion of partners and children this programme year, had a final outcome of 61,112 places, representing about 32 per cent of the migration programme. The partner category delivered 47,752 places (or 78 per cent) of the family stream, and the child category delivered 3850 places. The remaining family stream places were granted within the other family (585 places), contributory parent (6675 places) and parent (2250 places) categories.

“Delivery of a well-managed migration scheme demonstrates our capacity to carefully structure our programmes to deliver the size and composition required to meet the needs of the Australian economy,” Scott Morrison said.

«Νικήσαμε τα σχέδια των γενοκτόνων επειδή είμαστε εδώ και τους θυμίζουμε τα εγκλήματά τους». Αυτό ήταν το βασικό μήνυμα του κύριου ομιλητή καθηγητή Νίκοy Λυγερoύ στην εκδήλωση Ημέρας Μνήμης της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων του Πόντου, της Μικράς Ασίας και της ανατολικής Θράκης στην Πολιτειακή Βουλή την Τρίτη το βράδυ.

Από πολλές πλευρές, η εκδήλωση ήταν ιστορικής σημασίας. Ήταν το αποτέλεσμα συνεργασίας πολλών σωματείων της ομογένειας: ΑΧΕΠΑ ΝΝΟ και ΝΖ (κύριος χορηγός της επίσκεψης του καθηγητή), της Ποντιακής Ένωσης «Ποντοξενιτέας», της Ποντιακής Αδελφότητας «Παναγία Σουμελά» και του Ποντιακού Συλλόγου Wollongong «Διογένης».

«Η ισχύς εν τη ενώσει» ήταν το κύριο μήνυμα της βραδιάς, τόσο από τους διοργανωτές όσο κι από τους ομιλητές. Ο κ. Λυγερός έδωσε έμφαση στην σημασία της ένωσης των θυμάτων -είτε αυτοί είναι Έλληνες, είτε Αρμένιοι, είτε Ασσύριοι, είτε Εβραίοι. Γι’ αυτό ήταν τόσο σημαντική η παρουσία του Εβραϊκού Συμβουλίου ΝΝΟ (NSW Jewish Board of Deputies), της Ασσυριακής Παγκόσμιας Συμμαχίας (Assyrian Universal Alliance), και της Αρμενικής παροικίας του Σίδνεϊ.
«Σκοπός των γενοκτόνων είναι η εξαφάνιση των θυμάτων, η παύση της συνέχειας των Ελλήνων, των Αρμενίων, των Ασσυρίων, των Εβραίων και άλλων» συνέχισε ο καθηγητής Λυγερός. «Να αρνηθούν σε αυτούς που δεν γεννήθηκαν ακόμα το δικαίωμα στη ζωή. Γι’ αυτό πρέπει να επιμείνουμε να απαιτούμε την αναγνώριση των Γενοκτονιών απ’ όλα τα κοινοβούλια της Αυστραλίας».

Μιλώντας για την επίσκεψή του στο Εβραϊκό Μουσείο του Σίδνεϊ, ο κ. Λυγερός τόνισε τη σημασία τέτοιων εγκαταστάσεων για τη συνέχεια της ιστορικής μνήμης, της συνέχειας των λαών που υπέστησαν γενοκτονία. Δήλωσε μάλιστα ότι θα πρέπει να δημιουργηθεί παρόμοιο μουσείο στο Σίδνεϊ για όλες τις γενοκτονίες, για να μην ξεχνάμε, για να μην επαναληφθούν τέτοια γεγονότα.

Ο τελετάρχης Δρ Παναγιώτης Διαμάντης (Πολιτειακός Γραμματέας της ΑΧΕΠΑ ΝΝΟ-ΝΖ και Λέκτορας Μελετών Γενοκτονιών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Τεχνολογίας του Σίδνεϊ (UTS) άνοιξε την εκδήλωση με τη φράση του Πυθαγόρα «ΤΑΣ ΛΕΩΦΟΡΟΥΣ ΜΗ ΒΑΔΙΖΕΙΣ», μην πηγαίνεις από τους εύκολους δρόμους.
Στους χαιρετισμούς τους, ο κ. David Clarke MLC (Υφυπουργός Δικαιοσύνης, Φιλελεύθερο Κόμμα) κι ο Αιδ. Fred Nile MLC (Χριστιανοδημοκρατικό Κόμμα) τόνισαν την αντιμετώπισή τους με απειλές, πιέσεις και απόπειρες δωροδοκίας εκ μέρους των τουρκικών Αρχών στην Άγκυρα και στην Αυστραλία. Οι δύο ένθερμοι υποστηρικτές της ομογένειας, που πρωτοστάτησαν στην επίσημη αναγνώριση των γενοκτονιών των Ελλήνων, των Αρμενίων και των Ασσυρίων από τη Βουλή της ΝΝΟ τον Μάιο του 2013, ξανατόνισαν τη σημασία της ενότητας των λαών εναντίον των γενοκτόνων, ειδικά σήμερα που έχει ξεκινήσει νέο κύμα γενοκτονικών πράξεων εναντίον των Ασσυρίων και των Αρμενίων σε Συρία και Ιράκ.

Ο Αιδ. Fred Nile MLC δήλωσε στο ακροατήριο την περηφάνιά του για τη φωτογραφία της Ιεράς Μονής της Παναγίας Σουμελά Τραπεζούντας που διακοσμεί το γραφείο του στο κοινοβούλιο της ΝΝΟ, την οποία τη δώρισαν πέρυσι οι Ποντιακοί σύλλογοι της ΝΝΟ.
Χαιρετισμό επίσης απεύθυνε κι ο Γενικός Πρόξενος της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας στο Σίδνεϊ, Δρ Σταύρος Κυρίμης. «Αυτή είναι η υποχρέωσή μας προς την Ανθρωπότητα, να θυμίζουμε τις αξίες του Δυτικού Πολιτισμού: αποδοχή της διαφοράς, ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα, δημοκρατία».
Παρουσιάζοντας τον κ. Λυγερό, ο τελετάρχης διάβασε ένα από τα ποιήματα του καθηγητή, γραμμένο κατά την ολιγοήμερη διαμονή του στο Σίδνεϊ. Έχει τίτλο «Οι δύο αναγνωρίσεις», το οποίο συνοψίζει τα μηνύματα του καθηγητή Λυγερού.

Ο κ. Γιάννης Θεοδωρίδης, εκ μέρους της Επιτροπής Ημέρας Μνήμης της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων, ευχαρίστησε τον «Δάσκαλο» για την ομιλία του και του παρουσίασε ένα αναμνηστικό -ένα αυθεντικό boomerang. Την εκδήλωση την άνοιξαν και την έκλεισαν οι Χριστόφορος Σκεντερίδης και Ευθύμης Αυγετίδης με Ποντιακούς σκοπούς στη λύρα.

Θα τα πληρώσει το πολιτειακό υπουργείο Παιδείας για αμέλεια του καθήκοντος.

Το $1,3 εκατ. θα φτάσει το συνολικό ποσό της αποζημίωσης που θα εισπράξει ο πρώην καθηγητής του Γυμνασίου Werribee Secondary College, που μήνυσε την κυβέρνηση της Πολιτείας και πιο συγκεκριμένα το πολιτειακό υπουργείο Παιδείας για αμέλεια του καθήκοντος καθώς παρά τις επανειλημμένες του αναφορές για κακοποίησή του από τους μαθητές, η Πολιτεία δεν φρόντισε να διασφαλίσει στον Πίτερ Δούλη, ένα ασφαλές περιβάλλον στο οποίο θα μπορούσε να εργαστεί.

Ο κ. Δούλης για έξι συναπτά χρόνια και ενόσω υπηρετούσε στο δημόσιο Γυμνάσιο αντιμετώπισε τα πάνδεινα από τους μαθητές του, γεγονός που είχε τραγικές συνέπειες για την ψυχική υγεία του 48χρονου καθηγητή. Εκτός από την αρχική αποζημίωση για ψυχική οδύνη, σε νέα συνεδρίασή του χθες το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο αποφάσισε ότι η Πολιτεία πρέπει να του πληρώσει πάνω από μισό εκατ. δολάρια, για την απώλεια του εισοδήματός του στο μέλλον αλλά και τα νομικά του έξοδα που φθάνουν τις $384.000.

Ο Δούλης από το 1998 ώς το 2004 δίδασκε τάξεις της τρίτης, τετάρτης και πέμπτης Γυμνασίου, των οποίων οι μαθητές είχαν σοβαρά ψυχολογικά ή άλλα προβλήματα συμπεριφοράς. Κατά την περίοδο εκείνη το συγκεκριμένο Γυμνάσιο, κατέτασσε τους μαθητές σε τμήματα ανάλογα με τις ακαδημαϊκές τους ικανότητες και στον Δούλη είχαν ανατεθεί οι τάξεις με τους ιδιαίτερα «προβληματικούς μαθητές» του σχολείου. Όπως ο ίδιος ανέφερε στο δικαστήριο οι μαθητές τον έβριζαν, τον απειλούσαν, ενώ υπήρχαν και άλλες φορές όπου αναγκαζόταν να επέμβει σε ιδιαίτερα σκληρούς καβγάδες μεταξύ των μαθητών για να τους σταματήσει. Και απόδειξη του ότι οι «δύσκολοι» μαθητές του Werribee Secondary College ήταν πολλοί είναι το γεγονός ότι εκείνη την περίοδο κάθε μέρα αποβάλλονταν ένας στους έξι μαθητές του σχολείου.

Το δικαστήριο είχε πριν από δύο εβδομάδες αποφασίσει ο Δούλης να αποζημιωθεί με $300.000 για τα πάνδεινα που τράβηξε και για το γεγονός ότι αυτά του στέρησαν το δικαίωμα να χαρεί τη ζωή του και $466.433 για τα χρήματα που έχασε από τη στιγμή που λόγω της κακής του ψυχολογικής κατάστασης δεν μπορούσε να εργαστεί.
Η συγκεκριμένη δικαστική απόφαση ανοίγει τους «ασκούς του Αιόλου» καθώς εκτιμάται ότι θα υπάρξουν και άλλοι καθηγητές που θα επιλέξουν τη δικαστική οδό αν τα διευθυντικά στελέχη σχολείων τους δεν λαμβάνουν υπόψη τις καταγγελίες τους.

Adelaide Zoo’s giant pandas have failed to mate, but their keepers say it is by no means the end of the affair.

Since Tuesday, Wang Wang and Funi were repeatedly introduced to one another in special breeding quarters.

Acting senior panda keeper Lucy Catt said it was not unexpected the two failed to mate this year, given their age and inexperience.

“It’s not disappointing at all; we are actually quite excited by what we have seen by both pandas this breeding season,” Ms Catt said.

“We went into this with excitement and optimism, but we remained realistic throughout the whole season.

“We’re the first institution to have two inexperienced pandas, where as everywhere else always has an experienced breeder with an inexperienced breeder, and that is certainly what we see in the wild as well.

“Even when a female comes into season for the first time, it’s going to be the more dominant experienced males who get access to her.”

Ms Catt said the dominant male behaviours displayed by Wang Wang were a positive sign and the zoo was already looking forward to next year’s breeding season.

She said there would now be a lot of discussion as to which direction the zoo takes for next year’s season.

“But certainly from what we have seen this year, it certainly gives us a lot of hope for next year,” she said.

She said a mixture of both natural mating and artificial insemination (AI) within the 36-hour mating period could be an option.

“At the start of her ovulation we [could] try for natural mating, and then you follow that on with AI, and then you don’t do any more natural mating attempts, but you can follow up with an additional artificial insemination procedure,” she said.

“We’re very excited and confident in how we went and the road we took this year.

“Certainly, very optimistic for next year, but again there are some institutions that have had pandas for 10 years and who haven’t bred.

“It is a very difficult thing to do, but these guys have been absolutely incredible.”

The pandas have been at the Adelaide Zoo for about five years and are currently on a 10-year loan from China.

However Ms Catt said there was potential for the loan to be extended.

Should the pandas produce any cubs, they would be sent back to China when they were about 18 months old.

Australia is refusing to take a plan for deeper cuts to greenhouse gas emissions to a special world leaders’ climate summit in New York next week, rejecting calls from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who will represent the Abbott government at the conference on Tuesday, ruled out bringing to the table beefed-up emissions reduction targets, despite hopes the meeting would build momentum towards signing a new post-2020 global climate change deal in Paris next year.

US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron are among the 125 world leaders who will attend the summit where Mr Ban has demanded “bold announcements and actions” from countries to demonstrate readiness to “scale up” action on global warming.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is not attending, despite planning to be in New York a day later for special UN talks on the escalating military situation in Iraq. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also skip the meeting.

In an interview with Fairfax Media, Ms Bishop said Australia would use the summit to confirm its commitment to a new global agreement on climate change next year but it was “too early” to present plans for deeper emissions cuts beyond Australia’s existing policies.

Ms Bishop said she would reaffirm Australia’s commitment to reduce emissions by 5 per cent on 2000 levels by 2020.

The government will also use the New York meeting to drum up support for an Asia-Pacific rainforest summit in Sydney in November and to join a global declaration to phase down the use of hydrofluorocarbons, so-called “super greenhouse gases” used for refrigeration and air conditioning.

An election commitment, the rainforest summit would focus on rainforest protection in the Asia-Pacific region.

Ms Bishop said the proposal was “an opportunity for governments, business and NGOs to commit to protective steps” for rainforests and preserve their environmental, economic and social benefits.

Earlier this week Mr Ban said he expected Tuesday’s summit to lay the framework for putting a price on carbon.

The Abbott government became the first country in the world in July to abolish a carbon price and its alternative direct action policy is in limbo without support in the Senate.

Ms Bishop said she would use the New York summit to talk up direct action’s centrepiece, a $2.55 billion emissions reduction fund to pay polluters to reduce emissions, and she expected Australia’s approach “will be respected for what it is” because there was “no one-size-fits-all way to reduce emissions”.

But the Foreign Minister said she would not lay down plans for targets beyond 2020.

“I will confirm that we are committed to a new global agreement,” Ms Bishop said.

“We’re looking at what other countries are doing, we’re in consultation with other countries … [but] this is too early to do it.

“It doesn’t arise at this summit.”

The Abbott government has promised to review Australia’s emissions reduction targets early next year.

But there is growing urgency from environmental groups for the government to define what its post-2020 target will be and how that will contribute to international efforts to keep global warming below two degrees, which scientists say would avoid the worst effects of climate change.

“Other countries have got their process going already to define their post-2020 targets,” Climate Institute deputy director Erwin Jackson said.

“The real tragedy in Australia is we’re focusing on 2020 and not on 2050, which is where international negotiations are headed.

“We’ve got to be lifting our game beyond the short term.”

The growth of tourism this year has had a clear impact on unemployment in Greece as the jobless rate announced on Thursday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) for the second quarter came to 26.6 percent.

This compares with 27.8 percent in the first quarter of 2014 and 27.3 percent in the second quarter of 2013, although the Q2 figures issued have not yet been seasonally adjusted.

The ELSTAT report pointed to the number of employed people standing at 3,539,085 in the second quarter of the year and the number of unemployed at 1,280,101. About three in every four jobless people (74.4 percent) have been out of work for at least 12 months.

The survey found that the number of employed individuals increased by 1.6 percent compared to the previous quarter and by 0.1 percent against the second quarter of 2013.

The number of unemployed was down 4.6 percent compared to the previous quarter and by 3.6 percent compared to the second quarter of 2013.

The data showed that the only economic sector to show an increase in employment was services (thanks to tourism), amounting to 1.2 percent. The primary sector (agriculture, fishing etc) recorded a 1.1 percent drop and the secondary sector (manufacturing etc) a 3.7 percent decrease.

Greek police fired teargas at protesters who hurled petrol bombs and stones in Athens on Thursday during a rally marking one year since the killing of an anti-fascism rapper by a far-right Golden Dawn supporter.

The killing of 34-year-old Pavlos Fyssas – who bled to death in the street after being stabbed – sparked protests across Greece last year and prompted an investigation into Golden Dawn for evidence linking the party to violent attacks.

Thousands rallied on Thursday in the working-class neighbourhood of Keratsini where Fyssas, who performed anti-racism raps under the stage name Killah P, was knifed.

The short-lived violence began after dozens of hooded demonstrators broke off from the initially peaceful march and police in riot gear chased them through the streets.

At least four banks, two shops and one kiosk were attacked, a police official said.

Dressed in white T-shirts proclaiming “We won’t forget,” the demonstrators marched through the streets earlier on Thursday, holding banners that read: “Pavlos is alive — crush the Fascists!” Hundreds of mourners laid flowers and candles at the spot where he died and where a monument depicting Fyssas with microphone in hand was erected.

Fyssas’s killing had fired outrage against a party that is widely regarded as neo-Nazi and the investigation into Golden Dawn landed its leader Nikos Michaloliakos and other lawmakers in jail pending trial on charges of belonging to a criminal group, in the most significant mass round-up of lawmakers since a military coup in 1967.

Golden Dawn, with a swastika-like emblem, rejects the neo-Nazi label and any involvement in the attack, saying it is the target of a government-led witch-hunt on questionable evidence to rob the party of votes.

It remains the country’s third-most popular political force in opinion polls, two years since it entered parliament for the first time on a wave of anger against the country’s economic crisis, rising unemployment and political corruption.
