Με τον Σωκράτη Παπασταθόπουλο βασικό στη σύνθεσή της, η Μπορούσια Ντόρτμουντ νίκησε εύκολα στη Βεστφαλία με 3-1 τη Φράιμπουργκ και πλησίασε την πρώτη θέση στον ένα βαθμό.

Την ίδια ώρα η Μπάγερν «αγκομαχούσε» για να νικήσει 2-0 στο Μόναχο τη Στουτγκάρδη και να φτάσει την πρωτοπόρο Μπάγερ Λεβερκούζεν, που την Παρασκευλή είχε χάσει βαθμούς στην έδρα της από τη Βέρντερ Βρέμης.

Η Γκλάντμπαχ συνέτριψε 4-1 τη Σάλκε στο «Μπορούσια Παρκ» και πανηγύρισε το πρώτο της «τρίποντο» στο πρωτάθλημα. Στον αντίποδα, η Σάλκε παραμένει χωρίς νίκη, μετά την ήττα στην πρεμιέρα από το Ανόβερο και την ισοπαλία με την Μπάγερν Μονάχου στη 2η αγωνιστική.

Με τον Στέφανο Καπίνο στον πάγκο και τον Πάμπλο Ντε Μπλάσις εκτός αποστολής, η Μάιντς πήρε το «τρίποντο» (3-1) στο Βερολίνο απέναντι στη Χέρτα, ενώ Πάντερμπορν και Κολονία έμειναν στο 0-0.

Ανήμερα της 300ής επετείου της πτώσης της Βαρκελώνης από τον Φίλιππο Ε’ και τους Γάλλους, ο Νεϊμάρ έβαλε δύο γκολ στα τελευταία λεπτά και χάρισε στην Μπαρτσελόνα τη νίκη επί της Αθλέτικ Μπιλμπάο με 2-0.

Η ομάδα του Ερνέστο Βαλβέρδε όχι μόνο είχε κλείσει καλά όλους τους διαδρόμους προς τα καρέ του Γκόρκα Ιραϊθόθ, αλλά θα μπορούσε να προηγηθεί στο 3ο λεπτό με τον Μπενιάτ Ετσεμπερία (ο Κλαούντιο Μπράβο απέκρουσε το σουτ του). Στον αντίποδα η Μπαρτσελόνα απείλησε κατά βάση με τον Μουνίρ Ελ Χανταντί, στον οποίον έγινε πέναλτι που δεν καταλογίστηκε (τον έσπρωξε ο Κάρλος Γκουρπέγκι).

Διαμαρτυρίες για το μη καταλογισμό πέναλτι δικαιούται να έχει και η Αθλέτικ Μπιλμπάο, αφού ο Χαβιέρ Μαστσεράνο έσπρωξε εντός περιοχής τον Άριτς Αντούριθ. Εντούτοις, από τα μισά του δευτέρου ημιχρόνου κι έπειτα ο Λιονέλ Μέσι ταλαιπώρησε ουκ ολίγες φορές την αντίπαλη άμυνα και ο Νεϊμάρ βρήκε δύο φορές δίχτυα (στο 79′ και το 84′), με συνέπεια ο καταλανικός σύλλογος να πανηγυρίσει την τρίτη του νίκη σε ισάριθμες αναμετρήσεις.

Το γρήγορο γκολ του Γκάμπριελ Αγκμπονλαχόρ στο “Άνφιλντ” έδωσε το προβάδισμα και μαζί τη νίκη στην Άστον Βίλα (1-0 την Λίβερπουλ). Με απόλυτο πρωταγωνιστή τον Ντιέγκο Κόστα η Τσέλσι επικράτησε 4-2 της Σουόνσι κι έκανε το “τέσσερα στα τέσσερα”, ενώ ισόπαλο 2-2 έληξε το ντέρμπι μεταξύ της Άρσεναλ και της Μάντσεστερ Σίτι. Ντεμπούτο ο Γιώργος Σαμαράς με τη φανέλα της Γουέστ Μπρομ.

Κατώτερη των περιστάσεων αποδείχθηκε η Λίβερπουλ στην αναμέτρηση του “Άνφιλντ” με την Άστον Βίλα και, βέβαια, οι απουσίες (Ντάνιελ Στάριτζ, Εμρέ Τσαν, Τζο Άλεν) δεν αποτελούν άλλοθι για την ήττα με 1-0.

Δύο τελικές προσπάθειες του Λάζαρ Μάρκοβιτς στα πρώτα λεπτά κι άλλα δύο σουτ εκτός περιοχής από Άνταμ Λαλάνα, Μάριο Μπαλοτέλι ήταν οι καλές φάσεις των “κόκκινων” στο πρώτο ημίχρονο, ενώ στο δεύτερο ο Φιλίπε Κουτίνιο σημάδεψε το αριστερό δοκάρι με δυνατό πλασέ από το ύψος της μεγάλης περιοχής.

Η Άστον Βίλα κατέγραψε πολλές λάθος πάσες και μόλις τρεις αξιόλογες προσπάθειες, ενώ δεν κράτησε μπάλα, αλλά η Λίβερπουλ βρέθηκε σε τραγική μέρα και η δεύτερη εντός έδρας ήττα της στις τελευταίες τρεις αναμετρήσεις με τους “χωριάτες” χαρακτηρίζεται φυσιολογική.

 Το αυτογκόλ του Τζον Τέρι στο 11ο λεπτό έβαλε δύσκολα στην Τσέλσι, η οποία όμως ευτύχησε να έχει σε δαιμονιώδη μέρα τον Ντιέγκο Κόστα και εν τέλει να πανηγυρίσε τη νίκη με 4-2 επί της Σουόνσι στο “Στάμφορντ Μπριτζ”.

Οι φιλοξενούμενοι απείλησαν ουκ ολίγες φορές για δεύτερο γκολ, αλλά ο Ισπανός επιθετικός ήταν ασταμάτητος και με τρία γκολ (στο 45′, το 56′ και το 67′), έβαλε σε θέση οδηγού τους “μπλε”. Όταν, μάλιστα, ο νεοεισελθών Ρεμί (είχε αντικαταστήσει τον Κόστα) σκόραρε στο 81′, η σεμνή τελετή έλαβε τέλος, παρά τη μείωση από τον Τζόντζο Σέλβεϊ στο 86′.

Ισόπαλο το ντέρμπι του “Έμιρεϊτς”

Ισόπαλο 2-2 έληξε το ντέρμπι του “Έμιρεϊτς” μεταξύ της Άρσεναλ και της Μάντσεστερ Σίτι για την 4η αγωνιστική της Premier League. Ένα δοκάρι οι γηπεδούχοι, δύο οι φιλοξενούμενοι.

# Ο Ντιέγκο Κόστα έγινε ο πρώτος παίκτης της Τσέλσι μετά τον Τζακ Μέρεντιθ (1928) που σκοράρει στα πρώτα τέσσερα ματς του πρωταθλήματος. Aston Villa preserved their unbeaten run by inflicting a second defeat of the season on Liverpool, who will have to concentrate harder than this if they are to make progress when Champions League football returns to Anfield this week.

Villa were worth the win, which leaves them with 10 points from their first four games, even if they got lucky when Philippe Coutinho struck a post with a firm drive eight minutes from the end. The visitors never allowed the home side to settle in midfield and defended an early goal well for over an hour, with Nathan Baker giving a heroic impression of Ron Vlaar in the centre of defence.

Liverpool cannot say they were not warned either. In this fixture last season, Villa raced to a two-goal lead before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw, and Steven Gerrard noted beforehand that the Midlands team had a good recent record against Liverpool.

The tone for most games is set inside the first 15 or 20 minutes, according to Gerrard. The Liverpool captain also claimed in his programme notes that his side started so well in their last outing at Spurs, establishing a solid defensive platform and going on to control the game, that the margin of victory could easily have been greater than three goals.

He would not have been able to say the same about this match. Liverpool started quite poorly, particularly in defence, and were a goal down after eight minutes. First Mamadou Sakho allowed Gabriel Agbonlahor to claim a ball that should never have been his and was forced to concede an unnecessary corner, and a blocked Philippe Senderos header from Ashley Westwood’s cross stood up invitingly for Agbonlahor to poke into the bottom corner. Managers are never impressed when goals are conceded at set pieces, and Liverpool were lucky not to give away another one four minutes later, when Senderos found space to get on the end of a Westwood free-kick, but headed too high.

Villa could only be encouraged, and with Adam Lallana marking his debut with a booking for a rash challenge on Tom Cleverley, and Javier Manquillo having to make a smart recovery after being surprised by Agbonlahor’s pace, there was no doubt which side had bossed the first quarter. Mario Balotelli was struggling to get into the game, though the Italian was hardly helped by the myopic officiating that allowed Senderos to get away with a clear trip after the ball had gone. Balotelli also had reason to feel aggrieved about subsequent challenges by Senderos and Alan Hutton, but limited his reaction to picking himself up slowly and looking balefully at the referee.

Liverpool were missing the pace and penetration of the rested Raheem Sterling, yet that could hardly be offered as an excuse for the difficulty they were experiencing defending set pieces. Villa sensed vulnerability at every free-kick and corner, and could have gone two up before the interval when Hutton glanced on a Westwood corner for Senderos’s first-time shot to clear the bar. Lallana shot narrowly wide as the interval approached and Balotelli was reasonably close with a speculative effort from the angle of the area, but the home side’s clearest break of the first half came in stoppage time, when Alberto Moreno found a way behind the Villa defenders, but Kieran Richardson got back in time to cut out his cross.

Brendan Rodgers watched Liverpool’s attacks being comfortably repulsed by the outstanding Baker and the rest of his defence for 15 minutes of the second half before sending on Sterling, who was welcomed to the game by a scything tackle from Hutton for which the Villa full-back was rightly booked. Sterling beat Cleverley with his first chance to run with the ball at his feet, only to produce a shot that landed in the middle of the Kop.

With Villa barely crossing the halfway line in the second period and Liverpool seeing plenty of the ball, the only question for the final half hour was how long the visitors would be able to last out. Rodgers freshened his attack with Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini for the last 20 minutes, the former replacing the labouring Balotelli and the latter gaining an unexpected chance at the expense of Lazar Markovic, who had actually looked one of Liverpool’s more promising players going forward. None of the changes worked, with Lambert making a mess of his only decent chance. Coutinho almost rescued a point, but Villa deserved the victory for their overall organisation and determined defending.

By the end, it was unmistakable disappointment on Arsène Wenger’s face and a heavy sense of regret engulfing the stands about Arsenal’s failure to capitalise on those goals from Jack Wilshere and, brilliantly, Alexis Sánchez that had turned the game upside down in 11 second-half minutes. Yet they will also know it might have been worse on a day when both sides could easily have won or lost and which culminated in a rare show of temper from Manuel Pellegrini.

Martín Demichelis’s late header ultimately spared Manchester City a second successive defeat but they still had time to hit the post twice during that wild, chaotic finale when their opponents seemed to be doing everything possible to contrive a way to lose. Samir Nasri, facing his former club, was denied a stoppage-time winner because of an offside flag and City also had justifiable grievances that the referee, Mark Clattenburg, missed Wilshere’s handball inside the penalty area.

Arsenal limped to the finish but it would be unfair to reproach them too heavily when, earlier in the game, they had played as though affronted by their record against the top sides. Wenger and his players had been reminded all week about their sorry run of results in these high-importance fixtures but there was no sense of a side with an inferiority complex. They played with high skill and intensity and, more than that, they had to show considerable personality after going in behind at half-time to Sergio Agüero’s breakaway goal.

To recap, this is an Arsenal team that had taken 26 points out of a possible 90 against the teams they want to consider as bona fide rivals over the past five years. They set off like a team that wanted to show that statistic must be a glitch in the system, but for a long time after Agüero’s goal they found it difficult to get any momentum back. Vincent Kompany was a formidable opponent, as he always is in the big games, and David Silva’s nimble artistry between midfield and attack frequently troubled the home side.

It was a test of Arsenal’s character and, midway through the second half, they passed it with distinction. Wilshere equalised in the 63rd minute after running on to Aaron Ramsey’s pass, eluding Gaël Clichy and clipping a lovely diagonal shot above Joe Hart, and what followed was sensational.

This was one of Sánchez’s better performances from his brief time at Arsenal and it was a majestic volley with which he gave Arsenal the lead, even if Hart might have done better.

It was just a pity for Arsenal that everything started to unravel from that point. Wenger talked of conceding a “cheap goal” and he must have been startled by the carelessness of his team in the moments before and after Demichelis thudded a header past Wojciech Szczesny straight from a corner. “We did something remarkable to come back,” Wenger said. “The only disappointment for me is that we couldn’t keep the lead.”

Instead, there was enough late pressure from City to feel they could have added one final, dramatic twist. Aleksandar Kolarov drove one shot against the upright and then another substitute, Edin Dzeko, was denied by the other post.

Dzeko had been on the pitch, Pellegrini said, because City’s manager was convinced Clattenburg would end up sending off Agüero. Fernandinho and Frank Lampard, two of City’s other booked players, had already been withdrawn and it was rare to hear Pellegrini be so critical of a referee’s performance. Uppermost in his mind was that there were “clear fouls” before both Arsenal goals. That was an exaggeration but, overall, he was justified to say Clattenburg had a “very bad day”.

Lampard had been held back for this game so Yaya Touré could have a break after playing for Ivory Coast in Cameroon on Wednesday but the 36-year-old looked his age on a difficult City debut. His yellow card, for sliding into Ramsey, had exposed his lack of match fitness and the game was played at an unforgiving speed.

To start with, Arsenal had the clear edge but Danny Welbeck, on a debut that showed his good and bad, opted for the lofted shot, the dainty little pitching wedge, when he ran clear early on with the chance to open the scoring and, as Wenger acknowledged, it was almost certainly the wrong choice of club. The ball came back off the post, rebounding into Hart’s arms, and even at that early stage it was tempting to wonder whether the £16m signing might regret that wastefulness.

Sure enough, City broke in the 28th minute. Agüero went for the same ball as Mathieu Flamini in midfield and, as the ricochet spun it to the right, the Arsenal man hesitated, believing it was going for a throw-in. Jesús Navas had read the trajectory of the ball and as soon as he started haring down the line Arsenal were in trouble. His cross was beautifully weighted and Agüero had eluded Flamini to show his expertise in the penalty area.

Arsenal lost Mathieu Debuchy in the closing stages to a badly sprained ankle and they were looking dishevelled in those moments when the champions went searching for the winner. They very nearly found it but Arsenal, on the balance of play, had done enough before that point to think that it would have been unwarranted.
