Court gives Greek gov’t two months to restore army wages

soldiers

The Council of State on Friday gave the government two months to abide by a previous ruling ordering it to restore armed forces and police wages to the same level as in 2012, when they were cut by 10 percent.

The coalition has so far failed to adopt the ruling, which would cost some 500 million euros, including back pay.

This prompted an appeal by a number of groups representing soldiers and policemen.

Their case was examined by the court’s compliance committee.

If the government fails to act on the latest Council of State verdict it faces being fined for every day that the salaries are not restored to their previous levels.

Archaeologists making their way into third and final vault of Amphipolis tomb

amfipolik6_324592555

Excavations at an ancient tomb discovered in August in Amphipolis, northern Greece, on Friday stirred more speculation into who may have been buried there as archaeologists worked to gain entry into a third chamber, revealed behind two life-sized marble statues of robed maidens, or caryatids.

07

Crews at the 2,300-year-old site on Kasta Hill will examine the structural integrity of the third entrance and of the chamber before entering what is believed to be the last section of the massive vault, which dates to the time of Alexander the  (356-323 BC).

Its size and grandeur have fueled widespread speculation as to whom it could have been built for, with some theories suggesting it could have been a general or high-ranking official. A technical team is also surveying the ground above the tomb in an effort to ascertain its exact dimensions.

Meanwhile, the archaeologist leading the Amphipolis dig on Friday played down concerns expressed by colleagues earlier in the week that the interest being shown in the progress of the excavation is putting too much pressure on crews at the site.

“We live in an age when information moves at a rapid pace and it is preferable that that it be correct rather than inaccurate,” Katerina Peristeri responded Friday, in writing, to an announcement issued on Thursday by the Association of Greek Archaeologists calling for less intensive coverage of the operation by politicians and the media.

Greece insists on war reparations

rothh

Greece made clear Friday that the country has not given up its claim to World War II reparations from Germany, adding however that officials are anticipating two reports on the matter.

“We are, for the time being, awaiting the conclusions of the cross-party committee and the recommendation by the State’s Legal Council,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Constantinos Koutras said. Both reports are still pending.

His comments came a day after Germany’s Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Roth denied that Berlin owes Greece, or any other nation, anything for WWII.

“Any issue of WWII reparations has been, legally speaking, settled for good as far as Germany is concerned,” Roth said ahead of a visit by Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

ICAC inquiry claims the 12th state and federal Liberal scalp

untitled

A sensational corruption inquiry has concluded by claiming a 10th NSW Liberal scalp, with Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann sent to the crossbench amid allegations he took secret developer donations.

This brings to 12 the number of state and federal Liberal politicians who have resigned or stood aside after corruption inquiries this year.

One, Senator Arthur Sinodinos, told the Independent Commission Against Corruption on Friday he did not accept ”any responsibility” for the NSW Liberal Party accepting donations from prohibited donors during the past state election campaign.

Operation Spicer, which concluded nine weeks of public hearings on Friday, investigated allegations that the NSW Liberals accepted money from banned sources before the 2011 election.

Senator Sinodinos was then the chairman of the party’s finance committee. He gave evidence he was unaware property developers, who have been prohibited from making political donations in NSW since January 2010, were donating to the campaign.

”Property developers as defined by whom?” he asked.

”What’s your problem? Don’t you know what a property developer is?” counsel assisting the inquiry, Geoffrey Watson, SC, asked.

The biggest donor, a shadowy Canberra-based organisation called the Free Enterprise Foundation, allegedly ”washed” almost $700,000 in illicit donations, channelling the money to the NSW Liberal Party.

”What about this for a pub test: the chairman of the finance committee of the Liberal Party didn’t know the identity of the single largest donor to the Liberal Party in an election campaign. What do you think about that?” Mr Watson said.

Senator Sinodinos said it was the responsibility of the party agent, finance director Simon McInnes.

He also said if he was present when the party’s former chief fund-raiser, Paul Nicolaou, suggested using FEF to wash funds ”it went over my head”.

Mr Baumann joined the crossbench after the inquiry heard he took $79,684 in secret donations from developers Jeff McCloy and Hilton Grugeon before the 2007 election. Mr Baumann, the former mayor of Port Stephens, admitted he hid the donations by means including a ”sham” invoice.

Although this occurred before the 2010 developer donations ban, he agreed the reason for hiding their identity was that both developers could have profited from a proposed development at Wallalong, near Maitland.

Mr McCloy and Mr Grugeon denied they were trying to ”buy” influence and the MP denied making any favourable decisions.

Mr Baumann’s accountant, Vince Heufel, admitted he donated $100,000 he owed Mr Baumann’s company to his client’s campaign. This reduced the company’s tax bill.

”I knew that tax evasion was a criminal offence but … I wasn’t thinking along those lines.”

Lake Macquarie: Great white shark tracks boat

shark

A GREAT white shark measuring about three metres long has circled a boat in Lake Macquarie.

Daryl Evans of Floraville and Kerry Thomas of Pelican spotted the shark about 1.30pm yesterday  while anchored at a spot known as The Barge, about halfway between Coal Point and Belmont.

‘‘My first thought was ‘We need a bigger boat’,’’ Mr Evans said.

‘‘We had a mesh fish keep hanging overboard that keeps the fish alive until you clean them, so I grabbed that because if the shark got there first we could have capsized.’’

The friends were in a four-metre tinny for their weekly fishing trip and had only been anchored at The Barge for an hour when they saw the shark about one metre under the surface following a berley trail up to the boat.

‘‘It circled the boat about six times, from about 10 to 15 metres away until he was about 1.5 metres away,’’ Mr Evans said.

‘‘We were excited but also had a little bit of fear – I certainly didn’t get too close to the edge or put my hands in the water. We were in awe.’’

The shark returned about 20 minutes later about three metres under the water and circled the boat once.

‘‘I’ve been fishing for 45 years and that is the first time I’ve seen a great white in the lake,’’ Mr Evans said.

The men warned a nearby houseboat and swimmers in the Swansea Channel.

Paul Wilcox, 50, died at Byron Bay on Tuesday when he was bitten by a shark while swimming off the town’s main beach.

Match preview: Αrsenal vs Manchester City

untitled

Pablo Zabaleta has warned Arsenal not to read too much into their win over Manchester City last month as they prepare to lock horns again.

Arsene Wenger’s side beat the Barclays Premier League champions 3-0 in the Community Shield at Wembley courtesy of goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud. City return to London to face Arsenal in a mouth-watering Barclays Premier League encounter on Saturday and Manuel Pellegrini’s men will still be licking their wounds after suffering a shock 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City last time.

Zabaleta is expected to recover from a knock sustained in Argentina’s friendly victory over world champions Germany last week to take his place in the City side and the defender expects Pellegrini’s team to give a better account of themselves in the capital this time around.

“It [the Community Shield defeat] was the first game of the campaign and the squad were not all back from the summer or 100 per cent fit,” the full-back told City’s website. “We are much stronger than we were a month ago and we will continue to improve and get back into our stride as each game goes by.

“That said, Arsenal are a very good team and it is always a hard game at the Emirates. They have improved their squad and brought in some great players to strengthen their title bid but we are looking to bounce back after the Stoke defeat and we will go there to win three points.”

Zabaleta is wary of the threat posed by Arsenal’s big-money signing Alexis Sanchez. The right-back believes the Chile forward will prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

“Sanchez is a very quick, sharp player who can play wide or as a striker but I feel he is most dangerous when he is on the flanks,” he said. “He did very well at Barcelona and he is a difficult player to face because you know you are in for a tough afternoon when you face him.

“He is also works very hard for the team, especially when they don’t have the ball and he has become a very important player for Chile so he is a great signing for Arsenal.”

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that midfielder Fernando and striker Stevan Jovetic have been ruled out of the match.

Fernando picked up a knock against Stoke in City’s last BPL fixture and suffered a further injury in training, sidelining him for Arsenal as well as the crucial games against Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Jovetic has also been ruled out of the trip to the Emirates after tweaking his hamstring on international duty but Pellegrini is hopeful that “he will be OK next week”.

Wenger could hand a debut to deadline-day signing Danny Welbeck following his move from Manchester United. The forward scored both goals in England’s 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win against Switzerland on Monday and has been given the chance to kick-start his career at Arsenal.

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at Leicester City in their last league match, but Wenger views Saturday’s encounter as a chance to demonstrate the progress that the FA Cup holders have made.

“Saturday is a good opportunity to show we have grown as a team and we are ready for the fight,” said the Frenchman.

Ramsey’s fitness will be assessed after the midfielder picked up an ankle injury in Wales’ victory in Andorra on Tuesday, while Kieran Gibbs (hamstring), Mikel Arteta (ankle) and Mesut Ozil (knock) have all been passed fit.

Arsenal have not beaten City in the last four Barclays Premier League meetings between the two sides and were beaten 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium last season.

O’Farrell. Ο κ.

jone

The Australians who go to war for the Israeli and Greek armies

Article%20Lead%20-%20wide6119093710fjkj1410442441713_jpg-620x349

When Adam Greene*, a Melbourne accountant, volunteered for 15 months of military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) he was well aware he could be putting his life on the line.

But when his first day of duty coincided with the outbreak of war with Lebanon the realities of his decision hit home hard. “It was a baptism of fire,” Greene, 32, told Fairfax Media of his experience that began on July 12, 2006, the first day of the 34-day conflict in Lebanon, Northern Israel and the Golan Heights.

“Even though we weren’t on the front line we were caught up in the raw emotion of a full fledged military campaign.”

The then 24-year-old commerce-law student, who signed up for the 15-month voluntary Machal program, which allows Jewish foreigners to join the army without becoming citizens, spent his first three weeks of service in Israel’s north unpacking mortars and missiles and disposing of used munitions in the “Middle Eastern heat”.

“Physically it was very difficult and emotionally equally as difficult having to cope with the rigors of war albeit at a back stage level.”

There are about 2500 foreign citizens from more than 60 countries enlisted in the IDF, of which it is believed 100 are Australian. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade does not keep figures on how many Australians are fighting in foreign armies, however the subject has received attention recently as the government looks to toughen laws preventing Australians fighting in Syria and Iraq from returning home.

Proposed counter terrorism legislation would make it easier to identify, charge and prosecute people who have engaged in terrorist activities overseas and would also make it an offence to travel without a valid reason to an area designated by intelligence agencies.

It is believed 60 Australians are currently fighting with Islamic State (IS), which is classified in Australia as a terrorist organisation.

Last month, during talks with Islamic leaders in Sydney, in response to a perceived double-standard that continues to allow Australians to fight for armies of states such as the IDF, Prime Minister Tony Abbott made the distinction between Australians fighting for designated terrorist groups like IS and dual nationals serving in overseas armies of nation-state.

For Greene, who lives in Caulfield, army service was not a tacit agreement with Israeli geopolitics.

“The army by its definition is an apolitical organisation. I felt my time in the army was not serving any sort of political agenda,” he says. “I felt I was serving the IDF and in doing so I was protecting Israel’s citizens and its borders.”

Greene says he chose army service over the university student rite of passage – a backpacking trip – as a vehicle for personal growth.

The son and grandson of Polish immigrants who migrated to Australia just outbreak the outbreak of World War II, Greene says the spectre of the Holocaust weighed heavily on his decision to volunteer for the IDF.

His service was also a way of expressing his solidarity with the young Israeli men and women who face conscription.

“I don’t judge those who don’t enlist, but I didn’t think it was fair that just because [my family] had a bit more money to get to Australia and not to go to Israel that all my contemporaries who were in Israel had to enlist in the army,” he says. “I wanted to acknowledge that in a meaningful and significant way.”

While Greene, whose father was a private in the Australian army in the 1950s, concedes he could have experienced the same personal growth in the Australian Army, he says it was the IDF that “needed” him more.

“At the time and unfortunately always Israel finds itself at a clear and present danger, facing existential threats. Fortunately Australia doesn’t”.

The war with Lebanon ended after five weeks, but danger loomed large for the duration of Greene’s service. He faced a potential terrorist threat when a car crashed into the fence of a religious school he was guarding in Jerusalem’s West Bank, and he spent five months on a military base on the border of Lebanon and Syria protecting Israel’s northern borders.

“It takes one RPG [rocket propelled grenade] and you are gone. Your life is on the line every second that you are on the fence,” he says.

Australians have a history of taking up arms abroad. In the 1930s, Spanish Australians fought on both sides of the Spanish Civil War and, in the 1990s, Australians fought for Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, Slovenia and Macedonia in the Yugoslav wars. Jewish Australians have fought in all of Israel’s wars from 1948 onwards.

When Greek-Australian Stephen Adgemis’ growing marketing business precipitated a move to Athens in 1992 he knew that army service was part of the deal to get Greek citizenship.

But it wasn’t until 2002, following ten years of red tape, that his Greek identity was established with authorities and he was sent for six months of army training in Crete.

“I wasn’t motivated to go in … having a business and having to take six months off was hard,” he says.

Greece has mandatory conscription for all men aged between 19 and 45.

Adgemis, now 52, was 40 when he undertook his training, which involved boot camp, weapons training and learning army protocols.

“Being older I think I saw it from a different perspective. It was an interesting experience. I can’t say it was the best experience of my life, but it does discipline people and that is important.”

Never coming close to combat was a relief for Adgemis although he did feel “nervous” about his safety due to the strained relationship between Greece and Turkey.

If Greece is at war Adgemis could still be called upon to assist. While he admits this is “disconcerting” he feels confident, in light of his age, he’d be tucked away safely behind a desk.
