It wasn’t long after a teenage John Anastasiadis made the move from Melbourne to Greek club PAOK Thessanoliki that he realised the enormity of what he had achieved.

“When I first got [to PAOK] we were drawn to play Napoli [in the UEFA Cup],” Anastasiadis recalled to www.socceroos.com.au. 

“Obviously it meant the great [Diego] Maradona was coming to our ground. To rub shoulders with arguably the greatest player at that time was mind blowing.

“I couldn’t believe that one month prior I had Maradona on my bedroom wall and here I was about to play against him. It was crazy.”

Much like Anastasiadis’ rise from the National Soccer League in the late 1980s to his dream move abroad.

The Melbourne-born striker had played just a couple of years with Heidelberg United before PAOK came calling, taking him across the other side of the world at just 19 years of age. “It was a great time in my life and I was blessed to fulfil a boyhood dream to play overseas,” Anastasiadis added. “Whilst it wasn’t all plain sailing, it taught me a lot about life in general. “With that it kept me in good stead as I was growing up.” In all, Anastasiadis made almost 400 appearances for PAOK in all competitions over nine years in Greece – scoring 66 goals – before deciding to move back to Australia in 1997 to play with South Melbourne.

He enjoyed immediate success with South – under current Caltex Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou – in the NSL, helping the club win back-to-back titles in his first two seasons. Anastasiadis scored vital goals in both grand final triumphs, including one in the 97-98 decider past his brother Dean, who was in goal for Carlton. He also represented South at the FIFA Club World Championships in 2000, scoring their only goal of the tournament against Mexican outfit Necaxa.

Having been coached by Postecoglou during those glory days with South Melbourne, Anastasiadis isn’t surprised by the impact his former mentor has had on the current crop of Socceroos. “He [Postecoglou] has widened the net to give basically nearly every Aussie boy playing overseas a chance which is fantastic,” said Anastasiadis, who coaches Bentleigh Greens in the Victorian PS4 NPL1 these days. “It speaks volumes about the man that, if you want to wear the shirt, truly want to, well here is your chance. “The culture he has created is that wearing the Green and Gold is a privilege, and with that performances get better because of the competition for places. “I am sure we will see more success with Ange at the helm.”

The next assignment for Ange’s army is against the country of both his and Anastasiadis’ family background. The Caltex Socceroos host the Greek national team in the two-game Dodoni Series, starting in Sydney on June 4, followed by a match in Melbourne on June 7. “From a fans point of view, it’s fantastic for the diaspora. They get another chance to see the new stars of the Greek team. “I think the Greek team is in transition at the moment but individually they have some excellent players which is evident that most of these players are playing in the top leagues. “It will be good for Australia to play against a quality side in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers.”

As for a prediction Anastasiadis said: “Greece play very defensive and are well organised and structured, so for us it will be difficult to break down. “We just have to keep the ball moving quickly to try and catch them out. “I think there will only one goal in it but I will say 1-1, just to keep the peace at home as my wife is from Greece.”

This is a moment of great shame for Australia’s ailing union movement and for one of this country’s most significant companies.

Australia largest private sector union, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), has been caught out.

The ruse? Trading off the penalty rates and casual loadings of vulnerable, low paid workers in exchange, in many cases, for barely a handful of coins in extra hourly pay.
Tens of thousands of workers are worse off as a consequence.

It defies belief that Coles and the SDA didn’t know that they were agreeing to a deal that left some low paid workers as much as $3500 a year short of their entitlements.

The landmark Fair Work Commission decision is a stunning indictment, finding that the deal with Coles did not pass the “better off overall test”.

Put simply, this is the legal requirement that workers should be paid more in a workplace agreement than they are under the award, the basic safety net of wages and conditions.

This is not the only questionable deal inked by the “shoppies” union with big retailers.

It is likely up to half a million workers in Australia are being underpaid due to cosy deals struck between big companies and the SDA. That includes agreements struck with Woolworths and McDonald’s.

Just over a week ago Fairfax Media revealed that some workers at McDonald’s were nearly a third worse off than the award with underpayment across the company of at least $50 million a year.

Both ACTU secretary Dave Oliver and Labor leader Bill Shorten have been running a campaign to “protect” penalty rates this federal election.

But instead of a sober self-assessment in the wake of the commission’s decision, all we got on Tuesday was evasion and pathetic spin from Oliver.

He defended the McDonald’s agreement (where young workers on $10 an hour are being underpaid) and said the commission’s decision in the Coles case showed the system is “working”.

It only ‘worked’ because the cosy deal was exposed by Fairfax Media a year ago, helped by the courage and research skills of an official from another union, Josh Cullinan.

The promise to protect penalty rates now looks like a sad joke from a labour movement with too few union members and far too many unions dominated by political hacks masquerading as officials.

Working conditions in Australia for low paid vulnerable workers, particularly temporary foreign workers, are getting worse. In nearly all cases there is no union representing them.

When the union is the SDA, sadly, vulnerable workers are probably better off with no union at all.

The benefit for the SDA in striking these deals is that the big employers are happy to have their representatives on site, signing up members.

That gives it influence in Labor, where the Catholic-dominated SDA uses its numbers to try block social policy change such as marriage equality. On the back of young workers, this union bolsters its conservative social agenda.

As for Coles, the third largest employer in Australia has successfully re-branded itself with slick ads, cheap milk and store makeovers.

But one thing hasn’t changed. In collusion with the SDA it has been ripping its workers off for years. Those worst off? The most vulnerable. The young, and those on casual and part time shifts.

No amount of marketing can hide that.

DOCTORS are working frantically to stabilise a surfer who is believed to have lost part of his leg in a horrific shark attack in Falcon, near Mandurah on Tuesday afternoon.

The man, who is well known in the Mandurah area, was out at Surfbreak Lookout when he was bitten just before 4pm.

Fellow surfers dragged the 29-year-old from the ocean and immediately administered first aid until paramedics arrived.

The RAC rescue chopper was sent to the scene however the surfer was taken to Peel Health Campus for treatment by ambulance.

A Peel Health Campus spokeswoman told PerthNow the man was in a serious condition and doctors were still working to stabilise him.

She said once he was stable he would be transported to Royal Perth Hospital for further treatment.

Earlier, witnesses told PerthNow the man suffered horrific injuries as a result of the bite.

Falcon Bay Beach Cafe worker Shaimous Wright said two men came rushing in after 4pm asking for ice, telling him someone’s leg had been bitten off.

“We gave it to them for free, apparently his leg got bitten off,” he told PerthNow.

“They ran in saying ‘we need ice, we need ice, his leg was bitten fully off’.

“We don’t know if they knew him, all we know is that they were just trying to help.”

He said customers and staff were in a state of shock over the incident.

Jodie Hough, a Halls Head local, said the man was still conscious when he was brought up the stairs from the beach.

She said he had no right leg from the knee down and believed a couple of people had dragged him from the water.

Ms Hough said there were a lot of people in the water at the time.

Falcon Bay beach has been closed one kilometre in each direction by City of Mandurah rangers.

Mandurah Coastal Times reporter Rachel Fenner said the man was aged about 25 to 30 and his injury was below the knee.

She said paramedics performed CPR on the surfer for about 15 minutes before he was taken by ambulance to hospital.

His injured leg was packed with ice as he was carried on a stretcher to the ambulance.

He was one of about 20 surfers at the popular break on Tuesday afternoon.

Ms Fenner said other surfers had seen a large shark in the area in recent days.

Just before 8am on Tuesday morning a 3.5 metre great white shark was spotted about 1.8km offshore at nearby Pyramids Beach.

But the species of shark involved in the incident is not yet known.

A Fisheries Department spokesman said its officers were aware of the incident and investigating but he was unable to comment further.

Surf Life Saving WA tweeted just before 6pm that it had received a report at 3.53pm (WST) of a shark sighting at the popular surf spot. It then tweeted almost half an hour after that it received a report of a shark bite involving a surfer.

Για να βγει η ασφαλέστερη εταιρία, αξιολογείτε κάθε αεροπορική εταιρεία βάση των διεθνών ρυθμιστικών αρχών, των θανατηφόρων περιστατικών τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια, από τον έλεγχο ασφαλείας της Διεθνούς Ένωσης Αεροπορικών Μεταφορών (IATA), και του αν η χώρα προέλευσης του είναι σύμφωνη με τις παραμέτρους ασφάλειας των οκτώ σημείων της Διεθνούς Οργάνωσης Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας.

AIR NEW ZEALAND

Η Finnair, η αεροπορική εταιρεία της Φινλανδίας, μπορεί να μην έχει κερδίσει την προσοχή των μέσων ενημέρωσης, όπως μερικές απ’ τις Σκανδιναβικές ανταγωνιστικές εταιρείες, αλλά έχει ένα απ΄τα καλύτερα ιστορικά σε θέματα ασφαλείας, αφού δεν έχει σημειώσει ατυχήματα από το 1960.

CATHAY PACIFIC

Το AirlineRatings.com έδωσε πρόσφατα στην Cathay Pacific τον τίτλο της καλύτερης αεροπορικής εταιρείας μεγάλων αποστάσεων στην περιοχή της Ασίας-Ειρηνικού.H αεροπορική εταιρεία ξεχωρίζει στον τομέα της ασφάλειας, αφού δεν έχει κανένα θανατηφόρο ατύχημα από το 1960.

EMIRATES

Από την ίδρυσή της το 1985, η Emirates έχει εξελιχθεί σε έναν από τους μεγαλύτερους παίκτες του κλάδου. Για πάνω από 30 χρόνια, η αεροπορική εταιρεία έχει διατηρήσει ένα σχεδόν τέλειο ρεκόρ ασφαλείας – χωρίς να έχει καταγράψει κανένα μοιραίο ατύχημα.

ETIHAD

Η Etihad έχει διατηρήσει επίσης ένα άψογο ρεκόρ ασφάλειας και είναι πραγματικά αξιοσημείωτο το πόσο γρήγορα η αεροπορική εταιρεία έχει αυξήσει το μέγεθος και τη φήμη της.

EVA AIR

Η Eva Air βραβεύτηκε ως η καλύτερη εταιρεία μεγάλων αποστάσεων στην Ασία από το AirlineRatings.com. Η αεροπορική εταιρεία δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα σοβαρό ατύχημα από την ίδρυσή της το 1988.

LUFTHANSA

Πρόκειται για έναν ευρωπαϊκό κολοσσό στις αερομεταφορές. Η εταιρεία που λειτουργεί από το 1955, βραβεύτηκε πρόσφατα ως η καλύτερη αεροπορική εταιρεία μεγάλων αποστάσεων στην Ευρώπη από την ιστοσελίδα και δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο ατύχημα από το 1993.

ALASKA AIRLINES

Μπορεί να ονομάζεται Alaska Airlines, αλλά είναι στην πραγματικότητα η έδρα της αεροπορικής βρίσκεται στο Σιάτλ και μετά την εξαγορά της Virgin America για 2,6 δις δολάρια παίζει βασικό ρόλο στον τομέα των αερομεταφορών. Η αεροπορική εταιρεία δεν έχει καταγράψει κανένα θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα από το 2000.

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA

H Virgin Australia ιδρύθηκε το 1999 ως αερομεταφορέας χαμηλού κόστους με το όνομα Virgin Blue. Το 2011, η εταιρεία άλλαξε επιχειρηματικό μοντέλο και μετονομάστηκε σε Virgin Australia και από τότε θεωρείτε μια απ΄τις κορυφαίες εταιρείες. HAWAIIAN AIRLINES

Η Hawaiian Airlines ιδρύθηκε το 1929 με έδρα τη Χονολουλού και θεωρείται μια απ’ τις καλύτερες εταιρείες στις ΗΠΑ. Η αεροπορική διαθέτει ένα στόλο με περισσότερα από 50 αεροσκάφη και δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο ατύχημα

JAPAN AIRLINES

Η Japan Airlines ιδρύθηκε το 1951 και ήταν ο εθνικός αερομεταφορέας της Ιαπωνίας για περισσότερα από 60 χρόνια. Η εταιρεία δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα για περισσότερα από 30 χρόνια

KLM

H KLM είναι ένα από τα παλαιότερα και πιο αξιόπιστα ονόματα στον κλάδο των αερομεταφορών. Παρά το γεγονός ότι η KLM και Air France συγχωνεύθηκαν το 2004, οι δύο αεροπορικές εταιρείες λειτουργούν υπό ξεχωριστές εταιρείες. Η KLM δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα εδώ και σχεδόν 40 χρόνια.

SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES

H Scandinavian Airlines ή SAS, με έτος ίδρυσης το 1946, είναι η εθνική αεροπορική εταιρεία της Δανίας, της Νορβηγίας και της Σουηδίας. Η εταιρεία σημείωσε τη τελευταία μοιραία συντριβή το 2001.

SWISS INTERNATIONAL AIR LINES

H Swiss International Air Lines ιδρύθηκε το 2002 από τα ερείπια της πτωχεύσασας Swissair. Το 2007, η εταιρεία έγινε μέρος του Ομίλου της Lufthansa και δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα δυστύχημα στην ιστορία της.

UNITED AIRLINES

H United Airlines με έδρα το Σικάγο πήρε τη σημερινή της μορφή το 2012 με τη συγχώνευση United και Continental Airlines. Η United δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα σε περισσότερο από 20 χρόνια.

VIRGIN ATLANTIC

Με βάση το Crawley της Αγγλίας, η Virgin Atlantic είναι ένα πρωτότυπο εγχείρημα του δισεκατομμυριούχου Richard Branson. Από το 2012, το 49% της εταιρείας είναι υπό τον έλεγχο της Delta Air Lines. Η Virgin Atlantic δεν έχει σημειώσει καθόλου θανατηφόρα ατυχήματα στην ιστορία της.

QANTAS

Και η κορυφαία εταιρεία είναι η… Qantas απ’ την Αυστραλία –το Volvo του κλάδου των αερομεταφορών– μια εταιρεία της οποίας η φήμη και η μαγεία είναι χτισμένη πάνω στο καθαρό μητρώο ασφαλείας της. Η αεροπορική εταιρεία που μετρά 93 χρόνια λειτουργίας δεν έχει σημειώσει κανένα θανατηφόρο δυστύχημα από το 1951.
