PM extends well wishes to Greek Orthodox Christians

malcolm-turnbull-custom-data

Malcolm Turnbull took the opportunity ahead of Sunday to wish Australia’s 383,000 Greek Orthodox Christians a happy Easter.

In an official letter addressed to the community, the prime minister recognised the religious holiday as “the holiest and most spiritually significant of the seasons of the liturgical year – a reminder of the example set by Christ, and His commitment to serve others”.

He also highlighted that Easter can be a significant time not only for those of faith, but for all Australians who acknowledge the role and meaning of Christianity in the nation’s social fabric and heritage of belief.

“During this time, many of us will gather with family and friends and share traditional food. We will also redouble our commitment to the less well-off, as we are reminded of our shared responsibility to love, serve and forgive one another,” wrote Mr Turnbull.

The Liberal leader then turned the attention to multiculturalism, claiming that one of Australia’s great strengths is “the mutual respect of different communities for each other”.

“At the core of our success are the values that we share − hope, respect and a deep belief that everyone should have the freedom to express who they are.
So to all celebrating Easter this year, my warmest wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday.”

Brother Concelebrants and Beloved Children in the Lord, Christ is Risen!

Having crossed the sea of Holy and Great Lent once again this year, we are all invited, as illumined children of the Church, to receive Christ from the tomb as the Bridegroom.

No matter how great the powers of evil in the world, which darken and tarnish the human person, we are not permitted to show weakness of faith before life itself, since in finality life is redeemed by the Giver of life. The Paschal lamb of God awaits those who have fasted and those who have not, provided that the lethargic receive the Supper as do the pious.

Humanity and the world are the inheritance of God, which the power of death cannot destroy. Whenever we feel that our powers may be failing us in our everyday struggle, we need to remember that beyond all human strength, the power of God remains inexhaustible.

In the language of our ancestors, in the immortal epics of Homer, the words ‘light’ and ‘human person’ are synonymous words. Let us therefore believe, sisters and brothers, in the Light. Let us strive for the Light, so that our works might be accomplished in Light.

Come receive the light from the light which never sets! Peace be with you! Peace be with all!

To Him belong glory and power to the ages of ages. Amen!

With fervent prayers in the Risen Christ

Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia

A-League grand final: Adelaide triumph deservedly eases the heartaches of grand final losses past

untitled

It’s taken seven long years since the last grand final defeat, and nine since its grand final humiliation, but finally Adelaide United has wrested the monkey off its back.

Rightfully, deservedly and without any argument, Adelaide are the Australian champions, having disposed of the Western Sydney Wanderers’ challenge in front of a packed house at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon.

It was a game that Adelaide, with their fluid, slick game, looked to be dominating when they raced to a 2-0 half-time lead.

But when the Sydneysiders pulled a goal back in the second half, Guillermo Amor’s team had to show its reserves of steel and mental strength alongside the footballing smarts it has displayed all season to see it through, Pablo Sanchez’s late sealer giving them a comfortable enough 3-1 margin.

Thus, the footballing gods have once again shown that league form is invariably the best guide to a finals series.

Adelaide won the Premier’s Plate and have justified their No.1 seeding by winning their home semi-final easily (against Melbourne City) and then holding off the late challenge from Tony Popovic’s men.

What better place, and in what better style, than to achieve atonement and dispel the ghosts of grand final defeats past than in the famous old stadium?

The Oval has hosted cricket Tests, Socceroos internationals, AFL blockbusters and footy finals games, so the fact that the team from the City of Churches was able to fulfil its potential in the cathedral of South Australian sport was entirely appropriate.

This triumph will surely now banish the heartache and heartbreaking memories of previous defeats.

The 6-0 loss by a 10-man Adelaide to Melbourne Victory in the grand final of the A-League’s second season may never be erased. And the disappointment of their previous defeat, a 1-0 loss also to Victory in controversial circumstances when Reds striker Cristiano was sent off early in the game, still lingers.

But this triumph will ease some of the embarrassment from that first loss and put the second narrow defeat in perspective.

Perhaps the only thing that could have been better for South Australian fans than winning their first grand final at a sun-bathed Oval in front of a packed, partisan crowd, would have been if their opponents had been Victory, not Western Sydney!

There was a perfect sense of symmetry about this game, too: the last time an Adelaide side won the national soccer title was in 1994, when Zoran Matic’s Adelaide City saw off the Melbourne Knights in an NSL title decider. The date then was May 1, 22 years ago to the day of this triumph.

The Reds have been the story of the A-League season on every level, providing a narrative that has grown in substance.

It wasn’t an easy start under new coach Guillermo Amor, the former Barcelona midfielder, who won the European Cup in 1992 and numerous La Liga titles as part of a Barca team touched by the coaching magic of the legendary Johan Cruyff, the Dutchman who died earlier this year.

Amor had been part of the coaching staff at Hindmarsh under previous boss and compatriot Josep Gombau, but did not make a seamless transition to the head coaching role.

Adelaide struggled to win a game as the team tried to adjust to the tweaks to Gombau’s game plan that Amor sought to implement.

They weren’t playing that badly, but they simply could not get a win. The mood in SA was becoming hostile, the natives were more than restless, and there was talk that Amor could be the first coach to lose his job this season.

But the Adelaide board – which has been trigger happy in the past – this time held their nerve, and their faith in the continuity of the Barcelona school of football has been well rewarded.

The Reds were bottom of the table in late November when they lost to Victory and things looked bleak. But from that point onwards the only way was up.

Since then Adelaide has lost only once – and rarely looked like doing so on almost any other occasion.

This is a reward not just for Amor and his players and the current Adelaide management, but for the South Australian game.

Adelaide lacks the population of Melbourne and Sydney, but it has always pulled its weight in soccer terms, producing numerous players for the national team and stars of its own, none more so than the Vidmar brothers, Tony and Aurelio. It was referred to by none other than the late Johnny Warren, the spiritual father of the Australian game, as the bedrock of Australian soccer.

The game has a solid kernel of support and a knowledgeable and committed fan base, one which, it is to be hoped, the Adelaide brains trust can now build on.

And why not?

In Hindmarsh they have got one of the best “right-sized” A-League stadiums in the country, intimate and intimidating for opponents, comforting and supportive for the Reds.

Now they have the best team – officially.

Next year will be harder. The champions always have a target on their back.

But Amor and his crew, laced with Latino flair with three Spaniards and an Argentine in the line-up, know what it takes to stay on top. They will relish the challenge.

Snowy Mountains brumbies should be culled by 90% over 20 years – draft plan

untitled

Draft wild horse management plan for Kosciuszko national park aims to cut the population of wild horses from 6,000 to 600

Ninety per cent of the Snowy Mountains brumbies would be culled over the next two decades, under a plan released by the New South Wales government.

The draft wild horse management plan for Kosciuszko national park aims to cut the population of wild horses in the park from 6,000 to about 3,000 in the next five to 10 years.

The population would be dramatically slashed to just 600 within 20 years, confining the wild horses to three locations inside the national park.

Current numbers of wild horses were unsustainable and the animals were damaging the park’s fragile alpine and subalpine landscapes, the NSW environment minister, Mark Speakman, said.

Releasing the controversial draft plan on Sunday, Speakman acknowledged wild horse management was an “emotive and complex” issue.

“There are diverse opinions in the community and often deeply held views which polarise stakeholder groups,” Speakman said.

“It is clear, however, that the broader community values the unique environmental values of Kosciuszko national park and looks to NPWS [National Parks and Wildlife Service] to protect these values.”

Possible measures to slash the population include trapping, ground shooting, fertility control, rehoming and mustering.

Aerial shooting, brumby running and roping have been ruled out.

Feedback on the plan will be taken until 6 July.

Rakitic and Suarez strike to edge Barcelona ahead in title race

Barcelona-celebrate

Ivan Rakitic and the in-form Luis Suarez were on target as Barcelona moved to within two wins of retaining the Liga title with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over 10-man Real Betis.

For the second weekend running, Real and Atletico Madrid played before Barca and respective wins over Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano turned up the heat on the champions.

Luis Enrique’s men initially struggled to muster a response as Barca failed to display their usual fluent, attacking style of football at the Benito Villamarin.

However, Heiko Westermann’s dismissal for a second yellow card 10 minutes before the break threatened to undo Betis’ hard work in the opening period and Barca did get the crucial breakthrough five minutes after the break.

Rakitic had been regularly booed due to his previous association with Betis’ fierce rivals Sevilla, but he had the last laugh by tapping in after costly miscommunication between German Pezzella and goalkeeper Antonio Adan.

And Suarez, who had scored eight times over Barca’s past two matches, wrapped up the win late on with his 35th Liga goal of the season.

Barca may not have hit the heights they did in 8-0 and 6-0 wins over Deportivo La Coruna and Sporting Gijon in their previous two matches, but they stay top, level on points with Atleti and one above Real Madrid with two games left.

It was Betis who had the better opportunities in a lacklustre opening, Ruben Castro’s bending effort was deflected for a corner from which Claudio Bravo smartly tipped Bruno’s header over the crossbar.

Barca struggled for fluency and Luis Enrique cut a frustrated figure in the technical area as his side toiled against a stubborn defence.

The visitors saw Andres Iniesta slice wide after good work by Neymar, before the Brazil captain shot tamely at Adan when in a promising position in the area.

Betis were dealt a blow in the 35th minute, though, when Westermann received a second yellow card and subsequent red for chopping down Rakitic.

The numerical advantage should have paid dividends a minute after the break. Neymar picked out the run of Suarez, but the usually clinical forward shot wide of the left-hand post when one-on-one.

Barca did have the lead in the 50th minute, though, after shambolic Betis defending.

Lionel Messi clipped a harmless pass into the area, but Pezzella failed with a woeful attempted acrobatic clearance and the on-rushing Adan also missed the ball to leave Rakitic to tap into the empty goal.

It was one-way traffic after the opener and Suarez was again uncharacteristically wasteful, the Uruguay forward shooting straight at Adan after being teed up by Messi.

But Suarez finally got on the scoresheet with nine minutes remaining, latching on Messi’s exquisite throughball and sliding past Adan.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was replaced by Marc-Andre ter Stegen late on seemingly as a precaution, but Barca had already done more than enough to secure the points.
