Melbourne Victory have snapped their five-game winless streak – and ended their Hunter Stadium hoodoo – after edging out Newcastle Jets 1-0 on Sunday.

A turgid affair was settled by Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s first goal of the season after an excellent counter-attack, set-up by a great run and pass by Kosta Barbarouses.

It was Victory’s first win in Newcastle in more than six years and puts them just a point behind both Melbourne City and Sydney FC who are third and fourth respectively.

But the Jets winless run has now extended to nine matches as they remain eighth.

GOALS

0-1 Ben Khalfallah (71’) – A swift counter attack from the visitors ended with Barbarouses playing a superb pass through to the Tunisian who finished clinically with his left foot from just inside the box.

In a game of few chances, the first goal was always going to be crucial but the manner in which the Jets conceded it will infuriate coach Scott Miller.

From their own attacking corner, the Jets were hit by a lightning counter-attack, unable to deal with the pace, vision and skill of Barbarouses and Ben Khalfallah.

With the Jets in such a rut when it comes to scoring goals, it was always going to be a bridge to far for them to get something out of the match.

OPTA DATA KEY STATS

*The Jets have failed to score in five games now and set a new club record for time without a goal, now standing at 469 minutes.

*The win was Victory’s first in the Hunter since October, 2009 and just their third in 16 games away against the Jets.

*The shutout was Victory’s first clean sheet in their last nine games.

*It’s no surprise there was no fluency to the match, with a total of 33 Fouls over the 90 minutes.

Manchester Utd begin 2016 with a 2-1 win over Swansea

_87454385_rooney_getty

Wayne Rooney’s brilliant instinctive winner beat Swansea as Manchester United ended a run of eight games without a win.

The England striker flicked home Anthony Martial’s cross with 13 minutes to go to settle a close contest.

After a dour first half, Martial had headed United in front, before Gylfi Sigurdsson’s glancing effort set nerves on edge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United move up to fifth, two points behind Tottenham.

Swansea’s raids forward were rare, but they twice came close to a second equaliser in injury time.

First Ashley Williams brought a good save out of David de Gea before goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski headed wide from a corner with almost the last touch of the game.

How the action unfolded at Old Trafford

Listen to 5 live commentary of Wayne Rooney’s winner

Win can be start of fantastic 2016 – Van Gaal.

Rooney’s touch of class changes mood
Swansea had won all three of their league meetings with Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United – including the Dutchman’s very first match in charge.

History seemed dangerously close to being repeated for the home fans when Sigurdsson – the matchwinner in Van Gaal’s United debut – steered home Modou Barrow’s cross with 20 minutes to go.

Rooney’s afternoon up to that point had been full of industry but short on inspiration. However, United’s captain improvised brilliantly to flick Martial’s cross round his standing leg and into the far corner past a rooted Fabianski for the winner.

As well as delivering three points for his team, the strike gave Rooney sole possession of second place on the all-time goalscoring lists of the Premier League – on 188, 72 behind Alan Shearer – and Manchester United – on 238, 11 behind Sir Bobby Charlton.

Width + crosses = goals
The home fans’ relief was palpable on the final whistle as Manchester United secured their first win since beating Watford away on 21 November.

However, the half-time whistle had mostly been greeted with a bemused silence after a toothless first-half performance.

The one consistent source of danger for the hosts was right-winger Ashley Young. His pace and trickery gave Neil Taylor a testing afternoon and his consistently accurate delivery into the box was rewarded when Martial met a cross with a powerful header just after half-time.

The winner also came from the flanks as Martial drifted wide to turn provider for Rooney.

Fabianski almost provides stunning climax
Since losing his first match in charge across the city at Etihad Stadium last month, caretaker boss Alan Curtis had overseen three successive clean sheets to keep Swansea clear of the relegation zone.

And having kept United at bay for large spells in a tight and tidy performance, their discipline was almost rewarded in extraordinary style when Fabianski climbed highest after coming up for the final corner of the match and sent a header just wide.

Man of the match – Ashley Young

Manager reaction
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “I am very happy for the players because they had to play under big pressure and now we have won. We are still near the top of the league and the gap is less. So that’s football.

“That’s a season. A season takes eight months or something like that and not one month.

“I think we played a very risky system against Swansea because they had a shape with four midfielders in a diamond.

“I hope this is a fantastic starting point for us in the New Year and we can continue against Sheffield United.”

Swansea caretaker boss Alan Curtis: “Funnily enough, Lukasz Fabianski had asked a couple of minutes earlier to go up for a similar situation. I told him to stay back. I wish I’d asked him to go up earlier.

“We had to get back into the game. We were comfortable with the midfield diamond when it was 0-0, but once we went behind, we had to change things, so we put two wingers on to get back into it.

“We grew into the game after that, and we were unlucky not to get something.”

West Ham defeat Liverpool 2-0

_87452041_goal-

Andy Carroll scored against his former club as West Ham leapfrogged Liverpool in the table thanks to a first league double over the Reds for 52 years.

Michail Antonio beat Nathaniel Clyne to Enner Valencia’s early cross to net the Premier League’s first goal of 2016.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can was denied by the bar but Jurgen Klopp’s side were off the pace throughout.

Carroll, who cost Liverpool a club record £35m in 2011, sealed the points after meeting Mark Noble’s cross.

West Ham’s second straight win lifted them to sixth in the table, Liverpool dropping to eighth.

Liverpool’s shortcomings repeated
Liverpool travelled to London knowing victory would leave them just two points off a Champions League place after back-to-back festive wins over Leicester and Sunderland.

Yet this was a stark reminder to Klopp that he has his work cut out in 2016 after a lacklustre display that had echoes of the 3-0 defeat by Watford last month.

Can did clip the Hammers bar with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area in added time at the end of the first half. The closest they came prior to that was Jordan Ibe’s low shot in the fourth minute which whistled just wide.

Lucas then had a header cleared off the line by Mark Noble at 2-0 and substitute Joe Allen wasted a great chance late on. However, West Ham showed more attacking threat and more energy, and were just as impressive as they were when they defeated Brendan Rodgers’ Reds 3-0 in August.

Day for Carroll to remember, Benteke to forget
Carroll has endured some dark days at West Ham since joining for £15m in June 2013 thanks to injuries, but this was an afternoon to remember for the former Reds player, who remains Liverpool’s record signing.

He produced a trademark header to meet a wonderfully weighted cross, Clyne again beaten in the air as he was for Antonio’s goal. Carroll celebrated as though his goal had decided the title.

In contrast, Christian Benteke – Liverpool’s second costliest player – endured a miserable day as his first touch deserted him time and again. He was played through in the 25th minute but allowed James Tomkins to whip the ball off his toes before ballooning a 58th-minute chance over the bar.

How far can West Ham go this season?
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was not even born the last time West Ham did the double over Liverpool. As poor as the Reds were, West Ham were impressive.

James Collins was excellent at the back as West Ham recorded a fifth clean sheet in seven games, Noble produced a performance full of grit and determination in midfield and Antonio, who started the season at Nottingham Forest, was lively on the wing and fully deserved his second goal in two games.

Liverpool join Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Southampton on the list of scalps West Ham have claimed in the Premier League this season.

Will they be starting life at the Olympic Stadium next season in European competition? You would not rule it out at this stage.

Lanzini set for a spell out?
The Hammers were able to welcome back key man Dimitri Payet from injury as a second-half substitute – but did lose Manuel Lanzini in the 39th minute.

Lanzini had hit the post with a swerving drive before going down with a muscle injury which could keep him out for some time.

Bilic said after the game that it was a tendon problem, while co-chairman David Gold tweeted that he could be out for four to six weeks.

Lanzini will have a scan on Monday.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: “We created many not only on the break but from open play and we could have scored more. To keep a clean sheet at home to Liverpool is brilliant for the fans and it’s a brilliant start to the New Year.

“We played a really good game – especially in the second half. Of course Liverpool had their moments because they are a good passing team but we defended really well as a team.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “The game was decided by two crosses and two headers. At the end of the first half we had our moments but it was not enough.

“We always had the ball. We could have made more chances but we didn’t so we have to accept that again we didn’t play like we should.”

australia-prosfyges

Australia:Large numbers of sharks spotted at Jervis Bay’s Hyams Beach

untitled

Surf life saving patrols have been launched for the first time at Jervis Bay on the South Coast after a large school of sharks came perilously close to holidaymakers two times in two days.

Hyams Beach was closed on Wednesday and Thursday after 50 sharks were detected in the area, 20 of them close to shore while swimmers and divers were in the water.

On Thursday, a school of 12 sharks were spotted “two or three paces” into the water at the tourist spot, prompting the council to evacuate swimmers, call the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to patrol, and organise lifesavers to patrol for the next two weeks.

On Friday morning, at least one possible shark sighting was reported as more than 400 people flocked to the beach.

A woman preparing to swim with her children spotted a dark shape in the water and “panicked” before returning to her nearby holiday accommodation.

The woman alerted her husband, and reports made their way to a local marine rescue organisation.

Pictures taken from the air on Thursday afternoon showed the sharks close to the shore, where swimmers stood with their towels at the ready.

Harry Mitchell, who has run the shark-watching Bendigo Bank Aerial Patrol for the past 25 years, said he has seen more than 100 sharks close to the shore from Stanwell Park to Jervis Bay in the past three days.

images
“It’s not unusual to see sharks close to shore at popular beaches at this time of year, however over the past three days we’ve seen in the vicinity of 100 sharks across three local government areas in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven,” Mr Mitchell said.

The sharks at Jervis Bay appeared to be whalers, while Wollongong and Shellharbour saw “predominantly hammerheads”.

A siren was sounded by the aerial patrol’s plane when the whalers came within metres of swimmers at Hyams Beach.

untitled

“We’ve seen sharks three to four metres away from people,” Mr Mitchell said. “Whilst they didn’t look threatening, and I stress that, the sharks didn’t look threatening, we have a duty of care and we have to alert the beach-going community that there is a potential threat.

“Some of those sharks yesterday and the day before were quite large, between two and a half and three and a half metres in length. Some of them were in water only a metre deep.”

It’s believed the sharks were brought close to shore by food sources and relatively warm water.

Duncan Leadbitter, a visiting fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security who is also a volunteer with the aerial patrol, said such numbers of sharks are “uncommon”.

“Our records had 50 sharks in Jervis Bay alone,” Mr Leadbitter said.

“It seems to be a place where we see a lot of young ones [whalers] at this time of year,” he said, after checking records dating back 15 years.

Despite this, he said the South Coast has “absolutely” missed out on funding for beach safety initiatives under the Baird Government’s multimillion dollar shark strategy, which has instead focused on the north coast and metropolitan Sydney.

“From Wollongong south there is six times the number of sharks that you would see in the Sydney region, and the number of fatalities in our patrol area is no different. People would like to see a lot more advisory work here,” he said.

Mr Leadbitter said the patrol believes there are more sharks off southern beaches than they are able to see, and they want $100,000 to deploy “hyper spectral scanner” technology that has been developed in Western Australia.

Steve Jones, the South Coast president of Surf Life Saving NSW, said sharks had always been seen off the beach and around the rocks in the area, but the difference this time is the sharks were in greater numbers than normal.

He said swimmers flocked to the small patch of sand in their hundreds while he was at Hyams Beach on Friday morning, seemingly undeterred by the previous beach closures.

“We had two groups of people pull up to us and say ‘do you think there’s going to be any sharks here today’,” Mr Jones said.

They were told the sharks were always there, just further out into the water, and swimmers would be warned if they came close to shore.

“They said ‘OK’ and went down to the beach,” he said.

A boat from Jervis Bay Marine Park was out on Friday morning inspecting the water. The Department of Primary Industries directed inquiries to Surf Life Saving NSW.

Richard Walker, the floor manager of the Hyams Beach Store and Cafe, said patrons had mentioned shark sightings over the past few days.

“It’s not an uncommon thing to see sharks off the beach, they just seem to come to prominence when the tourists come here and they bring the shark planes out,” he said.

Boom brings crowds into sharks’ orbit

A massive boom in the number of people visiting beaches is the main reason sharks are occupying such a prominent position in our summer this year, surf life savers say.

Figures show an explosion in beach visitation in the Illawarra of more than 200 per cent since 2009, and more people on the beach means more chance of an encounter with marine predators in their natural environment.

“It’s not about creating anxiety. It’s about keeping people calm.”

Add this to several well-publicised shark attacks on humans on the NSW coast in 2015, and the dozens of sharks spotted between Port Kembla and Jervis Bay this week – including the pack of bronze whalers in the swimming zone at Hyams Beach.

Friends of the shark may not want to admit it but the reality is many people will reasonably be a bit more wary of them this summer. And this is not a bad thing, Surf Life Saving South Coast president Steve Jones said.

“It’s an individual personal assessment,” he said.

“It’s not about creating anxiety. It’s about keeping people calm.

“People who have seen reports [of shark attacks] become alert, and in some cases become alarmed. They see a shadow in the water it alerts them. Sensibly it’s a good thing because if you think it’s a shark you should get out of the water until it goes away.”

He has circulated a checklist of advice for beachgoers on how to minimise the risk from sharks, and what to do if you encounter one.

It was not one but more than a dozen large sharks making beachgoers uneasy at Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay on Wednesday and Thursday.

When the Mercury flew over Jervis Bay with the Bendigo Bank Aerial Patrol on Thursday several large sharks were easily spotted near beaches.

Mr Jones said up to 20 sharks were coming in near swimmers, with about 500 people on the beach. Some people refused to get out of the water until the sharks were “a few metres” away.

Airborne spotters identified the sharks as bronze whalers up to 3.5m long – a species which is known to come close to shore to feed, and while not identified as the most dangerous, can be aggressive towards people.

Mr Jones said there were always sharks in the bay but the massive increase in visitors in recent years made encounters more likely.

It’s not just Jervis Bay. Figures calculated by Surf Life Saving NSW and provided to the NSW Government show attendance at Illawarra beaches has increased by more than 200 per cent over five years – from 124,000 in 2009-10 to more than 392,000 in 2014-15.

The visitation figures are worked out by counting the number of people on five Illawarra beaches at 1pm from September 25 to April 25. The beaches are Coledale, Austinmer, Thirroul, North Wollongong and Wollongong City (south beach).

The figures are not exhaustive but have been calculated the same way over the six years, allowing genuine comparisons. Similar increases have been reported in Sydney and the Central Coast, and in the Hunter the increase has been more than 460 per cent.

After Wednesday Shoalhaven City Council agreed to his request for lifesavers to be stationed at Hyams Beach for two weeks.

The Aerial Patrol’s Harry Mitchell said there had been dozens of sharks spotted this week, with five hammerheads closing Warilla beach on Wednesday.

Greece:House price drop second to worst in the world

houses_athens_web-thumb-large

As pressure on the market prices of residential properties continues.

Greece has the unenviable distinction of having the second to worst performing residential property market in the world this year, according to data up to the end of September.

A Global Property Guide survey shows that the annual price decline in Greece came to 6.03 percent, second only to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (-10.4 percent). Compared to the second quarter of the year, Greece’s price slide amounted to 2 percent in Q3.

Among European Union member-states, Cyprus was a distant second behind Greece, with a 2.2 percent annual decline in home prices, while Spain was in third after seeing a small drop of 0.45 percent.

As Bank of Greece data also show, pressure on the market prices of residential properties continues, albeit to a lesser degree that previously. However, an Alpha Bank analysis revealed that after seven consecutive quarters of slowdown in the annual price reduction rate, the trend reversed in the second and third quarters of this year, when the decline accelerated again to 5 percent and 6.1 percent respectively, against a drop of 3.9 percent in Q1 on an annual basis.

Apartments in particular saw a milder decline this year, suffering a 5 percent drop in prices in the first nine months against an 8.1 percent slump in the same period of 2014 and a 7.5 percent decline in the whole of 2014. Apartment prices have dropped 40.9 percent from 2008 up to end-September 2015.

The central bank forecasts that the slide is unlikely to reverse in the coming quarters, as the factors that have led to it have not been eliminated.
