Alexander.

Greek Aussies in BRW rich list

Greek Aussies in BRW rich list

Con Makris makes the list thanks to his $1.03 billion fortune.

Seven wealthy Greeks named in BRW rich list.

Seven seems to be a recurring number for Greeks on the Business Review Weekly’s (BRW) Rich 200, with that number of Hellenes in the list for the past three years.

The BRW Rich 200 lists Australia’s two hundred wealthiest individuals and families, ranked by personal net worth.

Reigning as Australia’s most affluent Greek for the past three years is Con Makris, ranking at 47 and valued at $1.03 billion. Makris, a veteran property developer with projects in Adelaide, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, migrated to Australia in the 1960s and spent his early days running barbecue chicken shops before venturing into property in the 1980s.

Australia’s second richest Hellene is Kerry Harmanis, founder of Jubilee Mines in Perth. Harmanis ranked number 83 and is valued at $617m. Jubilee Mines was sold to resources giant Xstrata in 2007 for a total of $3.1 billion, which earned the former barrister a profit of $500m.

Those who climbed the list from last year’s placings include Nick Politis, owner of WFM motors in Sydney, and Theo Karedis of Arkadia Property Services. Politis, valued at $594m, climbed 31 places from number 117 in 2014 to 86 in this year’s list.

Politis’ recent increase in wealth is attributed to a large share price increase in car dealer AP Eagers, of which Politis is director. He also owns a string of car dealerships and property through his private company WFM Motors. Theo Karedis climbed one spot from 92 to 91 this year and is now valued at $559m.

Through buying property with another member of Rich 200 – pub magnate Arthur Laundy, Karedis has made a fortune in the liquor sector.
Other Greek Australians on the Rich 200 include Melbourne property developer Harry Stamoulis at number 95, valued at $541m; Spiros Alysandratos, chief executive of Consolidated Travel is at number 174, valued at $332m, and George Koukis, director of Temenos banking software company, at number 175, valued at $329m. Top spot in the BRW 200 list is Gina Rinehart, valued at $14,020 billion.

Pay dispute won’t derail Socceroos: Postecoglou

Pay dispute won't derail Socceroos: Postecoglou

Socceroos coach says players in good spirits while preparing for their world cup qualifier.

A pay dispute between Australian football’s chiefs and the players’ union won’t derail the Socceroos’ looming World Cup qualifying campaign, national coach Ange Postecoglou says.

Postecoglou isn’t worried about any distraction from the dispute being made public just days ahead of the Socceroos’ June 16 qualification opener in Kyrgyzstan.

The players’ union, Professional Footballers Australia, has launched legal action against Football Federation Australia, alleging the governing body hasn’t given match payments and commercial bonuses owed to the national team.

While FFA chief David Gallop criticised the union making the dispute public on Thursday as “inappropriate and unnecessarily disruptive”, Postecoglou said the controversy wasn’t gaining traction within the Socceroos’ training camp in Dubai.

“All those kind of things have more of an impact externally from what we do here,” he said in Dubai.

“Camp has been going well. I can’t fault our preparation, the players’ mindsets, the staff mindsets.

“The challenges for us are well and truly within our four walls rather than externally.”

The union has filed a formal grievance claim with the federation’s independent disputes arbitrator but won’t detail the amount of money it claims is owed to the players.

“The PFA can confirm that a grievance has been filed in accordance with the Socceroos Collective Bargaining Agreement 2011-2015 (CBA) against Football Federation Australia in relation to Socceroos agreed payments,” a PFA spokesman told AAP in a statement.

“This is a matter to be determined by an independent arbitrator.”

Under the agreement, to expire on June 30, “agreed payments” include match fees, prizemoney and bonuses.

Players have also sought to have the Socceroos’ commercial contracts independently audited.

FFA chief Gallop blasted the union for making the dispute public.

“The PFA’s decision to make public statements about a confidential and independent dispute resolution process days before a FIFA World Cup qualifier is inappropriate and unnecessarily disruptive,” Gallop said.

“The matters in question relate back to 2010, were first raised in August last year and are not material to the current qualification campaign.”

Australia:Academic backs people power on gay marriage

Academic backs people power on gay marriage

Professor Vrasidas Karalis calls for Greek Australians to embrace change

With Labor’s bill to back same-sex marriage unlikely to be debated by federal parliament until August, Professor Vrasidas Karalis told Neos Kosmos this week that “society itself should take responsibility for matters that pertain to private life and social ethics”.

“We cannot afford leaving such important issues to institutions which want control and domination,” he said.

“Individuals are responsible for their life – not social ideologies or religious beliefs – and when two adults want to do something in mutual consent, the state should have nothing to do with it.”

Opinion polls suggest support for marriage equality is even higher in Australia than in Ireland, which overwhelmingly supported the introduction of gay marriage in a referendum two weeks ago. Professor Karalis say his fear is that in Australia the issue is fast becoming a political football.

“Politicians sacrifice innovation to post-election alliances and give-and-take deals behind the scenes.

“I think that a general referendum should be the only legitimate strategy, so that all political parties, and all conservatives who react to it, have no excuse to ignore the significance of the issue.”

The gay marriage debate has divided the Greek Australian community, with advocates of same-sex marriage critical of some of the community’s more socially conservative elements.

“Despite what is claimed by social conservatives, the Greek Australian community, and especially the young, are open to the new challenges and keen to accept change,” says Karalis.

“In Greece, members of the gay community are still stigmatised, but they are fighting back, gaining visibility and power within the legal frameworks provided by the EU. A same-sex union doesn’t have to be a religious ceremony: it can be a civil union like the usual wedding ceremony.

“In Australia, the problem is because of existing prejudices imposed by anachronistic customs, many talented and creative people are lost to the [Greek] community and disappear within the wider Australian society, changing their name and constructing a new identity for themselves.

“It is an immense haemorrhage of intellectual capital. There is a place for everyone in Hellenism. It is time to nurture difference and acceptance and promote the values of an open and tolerant community, without fears or disrespect for difference.”

Professor Karalis says that young Greek Australians “have grown up within the context of a multicultural and multi-religious society and have no problems in accepting different behaviours and practices”.

“Many conservatives from the previous generation project their own fears and phobias on them and it’s time to move on. The recognition of same-sex union shows that society evolves and changes its principles, on the basis of including groups and individuals that were excluded from visibility and acceptance.”

The professor added that same-sex marriage would “create the legal and ethical framework to enhance personal responsibility and will redefine inter-personal relations for decades to come”.

Greece:Archbishop Ieronymos cautious on gay couple rights

Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Church of Greece, on Thursday failed to back a government bill giving greater rights to gay couples, although he did not directly criticize the draft law either.

A Justice Ministry bill put to public consultation on Wednesday foresees same-sex couples entering cohabitation agreements having the same rights as married couples but Ieronymos indicated that the Church would only recognize marriage between members of the opposite sex.

“The union of two people through marriage is a supremely sacred act for the Church,” he told journalists.

“Anything outside of this sacred act is foreign to ecclesiastical life.”

The new bill does not permit marriage between same-sex couples.

It is not known yet when the draft law will be brought to Parliament.

Attica’s 17,700 homeless to get mobile showers, laundries

The government plans to provide mobile showers and laundries, as well as specialized personnel, to help homeless people in Athens.

Alternate Minister for Social Solidarity Theano Fotiou revealed the plans in a response to a question on Thursday in Parliament.

Fotiou said there are also plans to create more shelters for homeless people in Athens as welfare services have 240 buildings that are not being used.

Citing a University of Crete study, Fotiou said there are roughly 17,700 homeless people in Attica.

The minister said they are divided into two groups: those who are sleeping on the streets and those who are in shelters.

She stated that the government received some 90,000 applications for rent subsidies of between 70 and 220 euros per month under the “humanitarian crisis” law passed earlier this year.

She said another 210,000 applications had been received for meal coupons and free electricity since the scheme was launched in April.

SYRIZA MPs gearing up for compromise

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis answers questions in Parliament on Thursday.

There were signs on Thursday that SYRIZA officials are preparing their party colleagues and the public for the possibility that the government will have to sign up to an agreement with lenders that will not be looked upon favorably by some MPs and voters.

“It is a compromise; we are not hiding it,” said SYRIZA’s parliamentary spokesman Nikos Filis of the ongoing talks with creditors, while admitting that the negotiations were “not planned in the most effective way.”

Filis insisted that whatever agreement Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras brings home will be the best possible deal and will receive the support of SYRIZA’s MPs. Labor Minister Panos Skourletis echoed this view.

“I do not think the prime minister will bring an agreement which will be in danger of not passing through the current parliamentary group,” he said. “Mr Tsipras knows very well what was in our manifesto, what we want to stand for and who we represent.”

SYRIZA’s MEP Costas Chrysogonos also stressed that the government faces no choice but to back down from some of its demands and accept what lenders have put on the table. “It’s not as if we’ve won a war against our lenders in order to impose conditions on them,” said the European Parliament lawmaker.

State Minister Alekos Flambouraris was also confident that an acceptable deal could be reached, even by the next Eurogroup meeting on June 18. The veteran politician insisted that any deal would contain a clear commitment to further debt relief for Greece.

Brussels talks halted as pressure on Greece mounts

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras addresses reporters after his meeting with EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the European Union headquarters in Brussels, on Thursday.

The International Monetary Fund has withdrawn its delegation from negotiations in Brussels aimed at breaking an impasse and unlocking crucial loans, citing significant differences with the Greek side following another round of talks between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande.

In a press briefing in Washington, IMF spokesman Gerry Rice indicated that a large gap remained to be bridged with Greece but made it clear that the Fund was not quitting the negotiations definitively. “There are major differences between us in most key areas,” he said. “There has been no progress in narrowing these differences recently and thus we are well away from an agreement.” But he added, “We remain engaged.” He also said, “The IMF doesn’t leave the table.”

The key obstacles in the talks are still the issues of pensions and taxation and the matter of funding, with Rice underlining that “all sides” agree that the Greek pension system is not sustainable. He noted that Greek social security funds are subsidized with the equivalent of 10 percent of gross domestic product, compared to around 2.5 percent in other eurozone countries. Rice also emphasized the importance of broadening the tax base and simplifying the value-added tax system to limit tax evasion. He denied that there were differences between Greece’s creditors, noting that the latest proposal to Athens by lenders was a joint one.

It is not only IMF officials that have left Brussels. Representatives of the European Central Bank also left Brussels on Thursday. Both IMF and ECB officials will only return to Brussels if they have convincing reassurances of progress in Greece’s position, sources said.

Negotiations at the Brussels Group level have been virtually suspended for the past two weeks as Greek government officials insist on finding a political solution to the impasse.

But talks late on Wednesday between Tsipras, Merkel and Hollande failed to yield a breakthrough. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, with whom Tsipras met in Brussels on Thursday, told the Greek premier that a solution needs to be thrashed out with the country’s creditors, sources said.

Greek officials nonetheless appeared upbeat. “The Greek delegation, as agreed, is ready to intensify deliberations in order to conclude a deal soon, even in the coming days,” government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis said.

Merkel acknowledged Greece’s stated commitment. “At the end of the talks there was absolute unanimity that Greece will work intensively and full steam ahead… in the coming days to solve all remaining issues,” she said.

But European Council President Donald Tusk emphasized that time is running out. “We need decisions, not negotiations now,” he said. “There is no more space for gambling; there is no more time for gambling. The day is coming, I am afraid, that someone says the game is over.” He added, “The Greek government has to be, I think, a little bit more realistic.”

Tusk and other European officials indicated that the next Eurogroup, on June 18, should be decisive.

Liverpool ‘reject Manchester City’s £30m Raheem Sterling bid’

View image on Twitter Liverpool have turned down an offer from Premier League rivals Manchester City worth an initial £25 million for winger Raheem Sterling, claim The Times.

The report suggests the bid would be for 25 of the £30 million total up front, with £5 million in add-ons and clauses.

Sterling, 20, has two years left to run on his current contract and has been subject of much transfer speculation since before the 2014/15 season had even concluded.

Liverpool, however, are believed to be holding out for a deal worth an incredible £50 million.

Liverpool finished eight points adrift of the top four and it is believed Sterling is eager to join a club in the Champions League, with City, Manchester United and Arsenal all linked with the winger.

Sterling was jeered by some fans during England’s goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, less then a month after he was booed by Liverpool fans as he collected the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak had earlier given chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain a strong endorsement.

Khaldoon told City TV: “It (the business) is working very well. We are on target in our business plan.

“I would say it is one of the areas that I must give credit to Ferran. He has managed the group extremely well. We have a great chief executive in Ferran.

“He understands the business very well, he is a man that understands multiple markets. He knows how to approach this business in an effective way. I would say we are in safe hands.

“One of the things that makes me very comfortable and relaxed is we have, in City, a great organisation with top-notch people that are the best in class in every position.

“We have a great CEO, solid management across the board, we have great coaches, great football directors. It allows me to sit and talk comfortably knowing that most of the burden is carried by professional, top-notch individuals.”

OUR VIEW

£50million!? That’s a lot for Raheem. However, it’d be wrong to assume that Liverpool actually believe he’s worth that much. It’s more likely that they are simply confident that they can get someone to pay that much. Given the ridiculous premium on English players these days, the fact that several clubs with big budgets are all competing for his interest and the fact that, well, this is professional football in the 21st century, perhaps it’s not that crazy of the Reds to hold out for such a fee. Worst case scenario: they scare everybody off and keep Raheem Sterling. Your move, City…
