Halikos’ new venture – creating a small Dubai outside Darwin.

The NT-based tycoon provided over 400 lambs for families struggling with poverty in his Greek homeland.

Darwin business magnate John Halikos was born on the Greek island of Kalymnos, but moved to the Northern Territory in Australia with his family when he was still a baby.

Halikos never forgets his beloved island of origin, demonstrating his love in every way possible, especially as his financial and business success grows.

The expat entrepreneur, who visits Kalymnos several times a year, has been making many donations to the island’s municipality as well as to individual Kalymnians in need.

Last Christmas he provided the poor families of the island with turkeys and bicycles.

This year, he asked his partners to buy lambs and distribute them to all underprivileged families, ensuring all Kalymnians can enjoy this Easter holiday.

While he initially refused to comment on his latest donation, he admitted that at least 400 lambs will be distributed through the social grocery of the island, Metropolis, as the priests point out homes that are struggling with poverty.

“It is shameful to talk about this sort of human help. Greece is going through a crisis, my favourite island is facing problems and my contribution is less than minimal,” John Halikos tells Neos Kosmos.

Mr Halikos’ company is based in Darwin, home for thousands of Kalymnian immigrants, many of whom arrived there recently to escape the current Greek crisis.

The business tycoon has always been supportive of the diaspora, and even sponsored the Darwin Panhellenic SAE Games.

Halikos Group is one of the most prominent and largest construction companies in the Northern Territory.

The Group has also expanded in Hotels, with “H”, declared one of the 10 best resorts in Australia.

John Halikos’ new goal is to build an artificial island near the port of Darwin and turn it into “a newer, smaller version of Dubai.”

Even though he has already come across many hurdles and unfortunate predicaments as the drills that work in the area have only been striking mud, he won’t give up just yet.

“I have a valid contract allowing me to make the most of the area for the next 99 years. I will eventually find a way to overcome these difficulties,” he says.

BERLIN (Reuters) – European Parliament President Martin Schulz warned Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras not to break with the European Union line on sanctions towards Russia during a visit to Moscow planned for Wednesday.

“Greece demands and gets a lot of solidarity from the EU. We can therefore also ask for solidarity from Greece and for this solidarity not to be ended unilaterally by pulling out of joint measures,” Schulz told regional German newspaper Muenchner Merkur in an interview to be published on Wednesday.

Schulz said he and others had made this clear to the left-wing Tsipras in several discussions, adding: “He should base his actions in Moscow on that. The EU expects that from him as the head of government of an EU member state.”

The 28-nation EU slapped sanctions on Moscow over its perceived support for pro-Russian separatist forces in Ukraine.

Tsipras’s government has said it will not seek aid from Moscow during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but has so far failed to reach a deal with its EU/IMF creditors to unlock fresh funds.

Schulz also criticised a Greek demand for Germany to pay 278.7 billion euros in reparations over the Nazi occupation of Greece during World War Two.

“I think it’s counterproductive to mix these emotionally charged issues with the current financial crisis in Greece,” he said, adding he shared Berlin’s opinion that the reparations issue had already been dealt with politically and legally.

Germany’s economy minister branded Greece’s reparations demand as “stupid” on Tuesday, while the German opposition said Berlin should repay a forced loan dating from the Nazi occupation.

Στη Μόσχα έφτασε το απόγευμα της Τρίτης ο πρωθυπουργός, συνοδευόμενος από τον Γιάννη Δραγασάκη, τον Νίκο Κοτζιά, τη Νάντια Βαλαβάνη, τον Γαβριήλ Σακελλαρίδη αλλά και την σύζυγό του.

Ο πρωθυπουργός Αλέξης Τσίπρας έφτασε το απόγευμα της Μεγάλης Τρίτης στη Μόσχα για την αυριανή συνάντηση με τον Ρώσο πρόεδρο Βλαντιμιρ Πούτιν.

Τον κ. Τσίπρα συνοδεύουν οι υπουργοί Εξωτερικών Νίκος Κοτζιάς και Παραγωγικής Ανασυγκρότησης Παναγιώτης Λαφαζάνης, η αναπληρωτής υπουργός Οικονομικών Νάντια Βαλαβάνη, ο Κυβερνητικός Εκπρόσωπος Γαβριήλ Σακελλαρίδης αλλά και η σύζυγός του, Περιστέρα Μπαζιάνα.

Τον Έλληνα πρωθυπουργό υποδέχθηκαν στο αεροδρόμιο Ρώσοι αξιωματούχοι.

Η Ελλάδα κάποια στιγμή μέσα στους επόμενους δύο με τρεις μήνες δεν θα μπορεί να βρει χρηματοδότηση και θα χρεοκοπήσει, εκτιμά το Spiegel σε άρθρο του που δημοσιεύτηκε τη Δευτέρα. Ο αθρογράφος του γερμανικού περιοδικου μάλιστα πηγαίνει ένα… βήμα παραπέρα και προτείνει ένα μεταβατικό νόμισμα που θα μπορεί να μετατραπεί στη συνέχεια είτε σε ευρώ είτε σε δραχμή.

Σημειώνεται ότι η νέα αυτή πρόκληση του Spiegel έρχεται λίγες ημέρες μετά από «αισιόδοξο» δημοσίευμα του περιοδικού,  στο οποίο γινόταν λόγος για συμφωνία μεταξύ της Αθήνας και των δανειστών, με τη λίστα μέτρων της ελληνικής κυβέρνησης να χαρακτηρίζεται ως «κοστολογημένη».

Το Spiegel αναφέρει ότι, μετά από τα 460 εκατ. ευρώ που θα πληρώσει το ΔΝΤ, κανείς δεν ξέρει αν η Ελλάδα θα έχει χρήματα για να πληρώσει μισθούς και συντάξεις«Ελλάδα της Κρίσης: Πρέπει να προετοιμαστούμε για Grexit», είναι ο τίτλος του νέου άρθρου του Βόλφγκανγκ Μούνχαου, ο οποίος προειδοποιεί ότι η Ελλάδα βρίσκεται ένα βήμα πριν τη χρεοκοπία, ενώ, σύντομα θα χρειαστεί ένα νέο νόμισμα.

Το Spiegel αναφέρει ότι, μετά από τα 460 εκατ. ευρώ που θα πληρώσει το ΔΝΤ, κανείς δεν ξέρει αν η Ελλάδα θα έχει χρήματα για να πληρώσει μισθούς και συντάξεις.

«Μετά από δύο τρεις μήνες, όμως, ένα είναι το σίγουρο: Δεν θα είναι δυνατόν να βρεθούν περαιτέρω χρήματα, ακόμη και αν βάλει κανείς χέρι στα ασφαλιστικά ταμεία και στα αποθέματα των τραπεζών», αναφέρει το δημοσίευμα.

«Η στιγμή αυτή δεν θα έλθει τον Απρίλη αλλά κάποια στιγμή τον Μάιο ή το αργότερο τον Ιούλιο. Και τότε κάποιος θα πρέπει να υποχωρήσει: Οι Έλληνες ή οι δανειστές. Ή και οι δύο μαζί. Εάν αυτό δε συμβεί τότε θα είμαστε αναπόφευκτα κοντά σε ένα Grexit, στην έξοδο της Ελλάδας από την Ευρωζώνη», σημειώνει ο Μούνχαου.

Το Spiegel σημειώνει ότι θα ήταν καλό να προετοιμαστούν όλοι πολιτικά και οικονομικά για αυτό το σενάριο και κυρίως τους κινδύνους που θα αντιμετωπίσουν οι τράπεζες, αλλά πρωτίστως τις γεωπολιτικές και οικονομικές συνέπειες και την ανθρωπιστική κρίση, η οποία μπορεί να οξυνθεί από μια τέτοια έξοδο.

Στη Γερμανία κάθε αρμόδιος γνωρίζει εδώ και καιρό, ότι οι Eλληνες δεν θα μπορέσουν ποτέ να αποπληρώσουν τα χρέη τους» σημειώνει ο Μούνχαου στο άρθρο του προσθέτοντας: «Αυτή την αλήθεια θα μπορούσαμε να την δούμε ήδη από το 2010, το αργότερο, όμως το 2012. Πριν από πέντε χρόνια η διάσωση της Ελλάδας θα ήταν απλή υπόθεση, όχι τώρα».

Ο Μούνχαου σημειώνει ότι μόνο ένα μεγάλο κούρεμα χρέους θα μπορούσε να περιγραφεί ως σωστή αντιμετώπιση του ελληνικού προβλήματος, τότε όπως και τώρα. Αυτό θα κοστίσει μερικές εκατοντάδες δισ. ευρώ παραπάνω. Ακόμη κι αν η πολιτική αναβλητικότητας της Άνγκελα Μέρκελ κοστίσει τόσο πολύ, παραμένει η καλύτερη στρατηγική.

Παράλληλα, το άρθρο του Spiegel επισημαίνει ότι το καλύτερο θα ήταν να εγκαθιδρυθεί ένα «ερμαφρόδιτο» status για την Ελλάδα, ένα είδος «καθαρτηρίου» μεταξύ του «έξω» και του «μέσα» στο κοινό νόμισμα. Η Ελλάδα θα ήταν ακόμη μέλος της Ευρωζώνης, αλλά θα εξέδιδε ένα παράλληλο νόμισμα. «Οχι νέες δραχμές, αλλά ελληνικά ευρώ, τα οποία θα μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιηθούν μόνο στην Ελλάδα» αναφέρει ο Μούνχαου.

Η χώρα θα περικυκλωνόταν από ελέγχους κίνησης κεφαλαίων αλλά θα απελευθερωνόταν από το βάρος των χρεών και των τόκων των πιστωτών της. Θα αποφάσιζε ελεύθερα για την οικονομική της πολιτική και οι υπόλοιποι Ευρωπαίοι θα την βοηθούσαν σε αυτή τη μεταβατική φάση.

Δεν είναι προς διαπραγμάτευση ένα κούρεμα του χρέους

Ένα κούρεμα του ελληνικού χρέους, όμως, δεν μπορεί να γίνει αντικείμενο διαπραγμάτευσης. Η ΕΚΤ ως μεγαλύτερος πιστωτής δεν μπορεί να άρει νομικά τις αξιώσεις της, συνεχίζει το άρθρο. Η γερμανική κυβέρνηση δεν μπορεί να το αντέξει πολιτικά. Ωστόσο, αν η Ελλάδα κηρύξει μόνη της μια απομείωση του χρέους τότε κανένας δεν μπορεί να κάνει κάτι για αυτό.

Όσο λοιπόν για το μέλλον της Ελλάδας, θα πρέπει η χώρα μόνη της να αποφασίσει τι θα κάνει από εκεί και πέρα. Αν δηλαδή από αυτήν την ερμαφρόδιτη κατάσταση θα επιστρέψει στο ευρώ, αφήνοντας και πάλι κεφάλαια να κινούνται εντός και εκτός των συνόρων, ή αν θα αποχωρήσει από το κοινό νόμισμα, με το να μετατρέψει το ελληνικό Ευρώ σε δραχμές, εντάσσοντάς πλέον το νέο αυτό νόμισμα κανονικά στις συναλλαγματικές αγορές. Η Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος θα γινόταν έτσι και πάλι μια αληθινή κεντρική τράπεζα και ότι το ελληνικό παράρτημα της ΕΚΤ.

Οι πολιτικοί στο Βερολίνο, στις Βρυξέλλες και το Παρίσι θα πρέπει ήδη να αρχίσουν να σκέφτονται αυτό το ενδιάμεσο βήμα, αλλιώς θα το κάνουν και πάλι βιαστικά, μέσα στην πίεση ενός Σαββατοκύριακου τον Μάιο ή τον Ιούνιο.

Washington wishes to play the role of an “honest broker” in Greek government negotiations with the country’s foreign lenders so that a solution can be reached as soon as possible, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday.

According to a statement by the ministry, the meeting in Washington on Sunday between Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and IMF chief Christine Lagarde was held in an “excellent climate,” adding that “no demands” were put forward from the IMF.

It said that the aim of the meeting, which lasted 2 hours, was to brief Lagarde on the Greek government’s views on the reforms and fiscal measures needed to pull the country out of the crisis, as well as of the need for a “smart” debt restructuring that will be mutually beneficial for the country and its lenders.

Speaking after the meeting on Sunday, Lagarde said that she and Varoufakis had agreed that continuing uncertainty over Greece’s ability to repay its debt was not in the country’s interest.

“I welcomed confirmation by the minister that payment owing to the Fund would be forthcoming on April 9th,” Lagarde said in a statement.

“I expressed my appreciation for the minister’s commitment to improve the technical teams’ ability to work with the authorities to conduct the necessary due diligence in Athens, and to enhance the policy discussions with the teams in Brussels.”

There had been concerns that Greece would not be in a position to meet its IMF loan repayment of 450 million euros.

Greece’s defense minister has said the country has obtained “stunning evidence” to support its massive claims for World War II reparations from Germany.

Panos Kammenos, in remarks made at the ministry Monday and published Tuesday, said Greece had obtained records held by the US military that review the extent of damage to private and public property during the Nazi occupation.

On Sunday, Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas told a parliament committee that private and state reparation claims from Greece were worth a staggering 278.7 billion euros ($302 billion).

Germany says it has already settled its reparations to Greece in a post-war agreement. The current spat over reparations has added to tensions between the two countries over Greeces troubled bailout repayments.
