Panathinaikos open Black Cats talks

Panathinkaikos are understood to have opened talks with Sunderland over the possibility of signing Charis Mavrias on a permanent deal.

Mavrias joined the north-east outfit from the Greek club in 2013 but, after struggling to impose himself at the Stadium of Light, was loaned back to Panathinaikos in January.

The 21-year-old has only featured three times during his loan spell back at the club where it all started, but reports have suggested they are keen on making it permanent.

The Black Cats were happy to offload the Greece international in January to provide him with more regular first-team football, but he failed to agree terms with a number of Championship clubs.

The defender is heading towards the final 12 months of his contract with Sunderland and could be available on the cheap.
