Η Τσέλσι γνώρισε την ήττα με 4-2 από την Μπράντφορντ στο «Στάμφορντ Μπριτζ» με αποτέλεσμα να μείνει εκτός συνέχεια του Κυπέλλου Αγγλίας και ο Μουρίνιο να δηλώσει ντροπιασμένος.

«Μέσα στα άσχημα συναισθήματά μου, έχω χώρο για να αισθάνομαι χαρούμενος για τη Μπράντφορντ. Αισθάνομαι επίσης ντροπιασμένος και οι παίκτες μου πρέπει να αισθάνονται ακριβώς όπως αισθάνομαι και εγώ.

Από τη μία πλευρά αυτή είναι η ομορφιά του ποδοσφαίρου, γιατί δεν είναι πολλά τα αθλήματα που είναι πιθανό οι καλύτεροι παίκτες να χάνουν απέναντι σε μία ομάδα ή παίκτες με εντελώς διαφορετικούς στόχους.

 Η κυβέρνηση των ΗΠΑ παραδέχθηκε έπειτα από 13 χρόνια ότι ο πρώην κατάδικος, Αυστραλός Ντέιβιντ Χικς, που παρέμεινε στη φυλακή του Γκουαντάναμο πάνω από επτά χρόνια με την κατηγορία της παροχής υλικής βοήθειας σε τρομοκράτες, είναι αθώος.

Ο αμερικανός εκπρόσωπος, σύμφωνα με τον δικηγόρο του Χικς, Στίβεν Κένι, δήλωσε ότι το κατηγορητήριο του αμερικανικού στρατοδικείου σε βάρος του πελάτη του ήταν κατασκευασμένο και δεν ανταποκρινόταν στα όσα πραγματικά έλαβαν χώρα.

Παράλληλα, ο δικηγόρος του Χικς είπε ότι είναι πλέον θέμα χρόνου μέχρι το δικαστήριο να αποσύρει όλες τις κατηγορίες και να τον αθωώσει και επίσημα, προσθέτοντας ότι κατά πάσα πιθανότητα αυτό θα γίνει κάποια στιγμή τον ερχόμενο μήνα.

Μιλώντας για την υπόθεσή του ο ίδιος ο Χικς δήλωσε για άλλη μια φορά ότι δεν έχει διαπράξει κανένα έγκλημα και πως κατά τη διάρκεια της δίκης του στο στρατοδικείο το 2007 αποδέχτηκε την ενοχή του προκειμένου να φύγει από το κολαστήριο του Γκουαντάναμο και να εκτίσει την υπόλοιπη ποινή του σε κάποια φυλακή της Αυστραλίας.

Ο Χικς είχε συλληφθεί το 2001 στο Αφγανιστάν και στη συνέχεια μεταφέρθηκε με άλλους κρατούμενους στο Γκουαντάναμο όπου και παρέμεινε μέχρι να γίνει η δίκη του και να καταδικαστεί σε φυλάκιση επτά ετών.

Ο πρωθυπουργός μιλά στους δημοσιογράφους μετά την άσκηση του εκλογικού του δικαιώματος

Νωρίς το πρωί άσκησε το εκλογικό του δικαίωμα ο πρωθυπουργός Αντώνης Σαμαράς. Εξερχόμενος ο πρωθυπουργός αναφέρθηκε στους αναποφάσιστους, λέγοντας ότι εκείνοι θα κρίνουν το αποτέλεσμα. «Είμαι αισιόδοξος, θα νικήσουμε».

Αναλυτικά, η δήλωση του κ. Σαμαρά:

«Οι εκλογές αυτές είναι καθοριστικές για το μέλλον μας και για το μέλλον των παιδιών μας.
Σήμερα, αποφασίζουμε εάν θα πάμε μπροστά με δύναμη, με ασφάλεια, με σιγουριά, ή αν θα πάμε σε περιπέτειες.

» Σε αυτές τις εκλογές υπάρχει ένας πρωτόγνωρα μεγάλος αριθμός συμπολιτών μας οι οποίοι είναι ακόμα αναποφάσιστοι. Εκείνοι θα κρίνουν το αποτέλεσμα.

» Είμαι αισιόδοξος, γιατί πιστεύω ότι κανείς δεν θα διακινδυνεύσει την ευρωπαϊκή πορεία της πατρίδας μας. Θα νικήσουμε».

Περικυκλωμένος από δημοσιογράφους βγήκε από το εκλογικό κέντρο ο Αλέξης Τσίπρας

Το αδιαχώρητο δημιουργήθηκε στο σχολείο της Κυψέλης, όπου προσήλθε να ψηφίσει ο πρόεδρος του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ Αλέξης Τσίπρας.

Εκατοντάδες δημοσιογράφοι πολιόρκησαν τον αρχηγό της Αξιωματικής Αντιπολίτευσης κατά την έξοδό του για την δήλωση.

Χρειάστηκε να περάσουν περίπου 10 λεπτά μέχρι να πάρουν θέση τα συνεργεία, οι ηχολήπτες και οι δημοσιογράφοι, ώστε να ακούσουν τη δήλωση του κ. Τσίπρα, η οποία έγινε αρχικά στα ελληνικά και στη συνέχεια στα αγγλικά.

«Σήμερα ο ελληνικός λαός καλείται να ολοκληρώσει με αποφασιστικότητα αυτό το βήμα που έχει απομείνει, το βήμα για την επιστροφή της ελπίδας, τον τερματισμό του φόβου, την επιστροφή της δημοκρατίας και της αξιοπρέπειας στον τόπο μας. Τώρα η ευθύνη ανήκει σε όλους και όλες, όσοι θα προσέλθουν στην κάλπη.

» Το δίλημμα της εκλογικής αναμέτρησης είναι πιο καθαρό από ποτέ άλλοτε. Σήμερα αποφασίζουμε αν αύριο θα επιστρέψει στην Ελλάδα η τρόικα για να υλοποιηθούν οι δεσμεύσεις του κ. Σαμαρά για περαιτέρω μειώσεις στις συντάξεις και στους μισθούς, οι αυξήσεις στους φόρους, η απελευθέρωση πλειστηριασμών, για συνέχεια δηλαδή μιας αποτυχημένης και καταστροφικής πολιτικής λιτότητας δίχως τέλος, ή εάν από αύριο η χώρα μας θα διεκδικήσει με ασφάλεια στην Ευρώπη όλα όσα αξίζουν στον ελληνικό λαό: μια ζωή με αξιοπρέπεια, με κοινωνική συνοχή.

» Αν από αύριο η χώρα θα διεκδικήσει σε μια σκληρή διαπραγμάτευση να επανενταχθεί ισότητα στο ευρωπαϊκό γίγνεσθαι. Είμαι αισιόδοξος, σήμερα θα είναι μια ιστορική μέρα. Ο λαός μας θα ολοκληρώσει αυτό το βήμα και η αξιοπρέπεια θα επιστρέψει.»

Upclose and personal: the NSW government’s announcement that it will trial a sonar-based shark detection system at NSW beaches comes after numerous shark sightings this summer.

Premier Mike Baird’s announcement yesterday that the state government will spend $100,000 trialling a sonar-based shark detection system at NSW beaches is just the latest in a very long line of ways that Australians have tried to protect themselves from the ocean’s most fearsome predator.

It follows a string of shark run-ins in NSW – beaches were closed for 10 days in Newcastle this month as a large great white shark came too close to the coast for comfort, and both Bondi and Manly beaches have been closed due to shark sightings in the last few months.

But the declaration of a new approach to shark control following a flurry of shark encounters is not a new cycle. Beachgoers might wonder what happened to the drone trials announced in 2013 by the state government after the death of 19-year-old bodyboarder Zac Young near Coffs Harbour.

Surf Life Saving Australia also experimented with using drones to spot sharks and rescue swimmers in Queensland, but the technical restrictions and cost saw its trials scaled back, according to the organisation’s coastal risk and safety manager Anthony Bradstreet.

“We did trial a few platforms … but since then we’ve had bit more of a feasibility analysis,” Mr Bradstreet said.

He said that smaller, cheaper drones required the operator to keep a line of sight with the aircraft. They are also limited to between 45 minutes and an hour in the air.

“If the micro-drones are off the table then you start looking at [drones] that have a longer endurance,” Mr Bradstreet said.

“They’re generally the ones that are coming out of defence … [and] obviously come at a higher cost and a much higher regulatory burden.”

“The mark one eyeball is always promoted as being the best surveillance instrument around.”

Swimmers can also take matters into their own hands, with an apparently shark-resistant wetsuit that uses colours and camouflage to confuse sharks.

And last year, the government of Western Australia provoked national outrage over its plans to cull sharks using baited hooks. Rob Townsend, the life sciences manager at Manly Sea Life Sanctuary, argues that the shark nets used on 51 NSW beaches between Newcastle and the Illawarra are no different.

“The popular conception is that [shark nets are] a big fence that sort of stops sharks going to beaches,” Mr Townsend said.

“They’re actually designed to kill sharks, the idea being that if a shark is showing a propensity to hang around beaches then that’s a particular individual we want to remove from the population.”

Greens environment spokesperson Dr Mehreen Faruqi used the announcement of the sonar system yesterday to push for the removal of the state’s shark nets.

“Shark netting has killed thousands of threatened species including dugongs, rays, turtles and the critically endangered grey nurse sharks, and it only gives an illusion of safety for beachgoers,” she said.

Nets have been used in NSW since 1935, but Mr Townsend said that most swimmers would probably never need the myriad systems such as drones and sonar buoys developed for extra protection.

“Very rarely, if ever, have I heard of someone who was swimming between the flags at a busy beach being hassled by a shark,” he said.

Nearly 10 million people are eligible to cast their votes

Greeks are voting in a general election which could result in Greece trying to renegotiate the terms of its bailout with international lenders.

The leftwing Syriza party, which is tipped to win, wants part of Greece’s huge debt written off and austerity measures revoked.

This has spooked money markets and raised fears of a Greek exit from the euro.

But the governing New Democracy party says the economy is recovering.

Greece has endured tough budget cuts in return for the bailout negotiated with the so-called troika of lenders – the European Union, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Central Bank (ECB).

The economy has shrunk drastically since the 2008 global financial crisis, increasing unemployment and throwing many Greeks into poverty.

Polls across Greece opened at 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT) and will close at 19:00.

There are nearly 10 million eligible voters, who are electing the country’s 300-member parliament.

First exit polls are expected immediately after the voting ends.

‘Dignity’

Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras says his party will restore “dignity” to Greece by rolling back on cuts to jobs, pay and pensions which have hurt millions of people across the country.

The possibility of a Syriza victory has sparked fears that Greece could default on its debt and leave the euro – the single currency of 19 EU members.

This is despite the fact that Syriza has moderated its stance since the peak of the eurozone crisis, and says it wants Greece to stay a member of the currency.

Meanwhile, the leader of centre-right New Democracy and PM Antonis Samaras has promised to work “day and night” to keep the country standing.

Syriza, he argues, could force the country from the euro by its policies, serving what he called the “drachma lobby”, a reference to the former Greek currency.

He also warns that Greece could miss out on a massive programme of quantitative easing unveiled by the ECB last week to help stimulate the eurozone economy.

The centrist To Potami and the right-wing Golden Dawn party are expected to fight for third place in the elections.
