Papastergiadis clarifies Community’s position

Papastergiadis clarifies Community's position

Greek Community president Bill Papastergiadis.

Greek Community moves away from reported political allegiance

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) has promptly moved to clarify its political position following an article published in Greece purportedly mistranslating the Community’s president Bill Papastergiadis.

Referring to a piece featured in the Sydney Morning Herald on January 3, Papastergiadis told Neos Kosmos the Greek media had misquoted him, resulting in what he said being an apparent favouring of one political party in reference to the Greek general elections on January 25.

“The way it was translated in Greek was that the Greek Community of Melbourne was expressing an opinion about the economic and political consequences of an election of SYRIZA and the effect of property values.

“[The] clarification was that neither the Greek Community nor me as president of the Greek Community are in the business of involving ourselves in the political election process, nor advising on political and economic consequences in Greece – these are matters for the Greek people, and we wanted that clarified.”

Papastergiadis affirmed the key roles and focuses of the GOCMV relate to language, culture and social matters, not politics, which have been the cornerstone of its solid bipartisan relationship in both Australia and Greece, but emphasised it will be politically critical where appropriate.

“That doesn’t mean that where appropriate we aren’t critical of policies and platforms of respective parties, whether they’re in Australia or Greece. That is government, we’re inactive in particular areas, but that’s not playing a political role.”

Despite the apparent misinterpretation, Papastergiadis didn’t receive any backlash, he said.

Real Madrid was too strong for Panathinaikos

Real Madrid was too strong for Panathinaikos

Real Madrid outran and outplayed Panathinaikos from then on, stretching its lead to 60-44, then 69-50 and 81-59, with the result coming with an 18-point margin.

But the Greens stayed close to their host for two thirds of the game.

A depleted Panathinaikos suffered a comprehensive 83-65 defeat at group favorite Real Madrid, its second in four games at the Euroleague top-16.

Thursday’s match in Spain was never the prime target for Panathinaikos in this ever-so-tough second-round group, but the Greens stayed close to their host for two thirds of the game.

The Spaniards were 10 points ahead at half-time (39-29) but Panathinaikos reduced its arrears to four points in the third quarter (46-42) through eight unanswered points. That was about the end of the Greeks’ challenge in the game.

Real Madrid outran and outplayed Panathinaikos from then on, stretching its lead to 60-44, then 69-50 and 81-59, with the result coming with an 18-point margin.

The highlight of the game, though, came on the last minute, when Real’s Facundo Campazzo performed a judo move on Panathinaikos captain Dimitris Diamantidis to floor and enrage him.

Esteban Batista was the top scorer for Panathinaikos with 15 points. AJ Slaughter notched up 12.

On Wednesday PAOK lost 82-78 at home to Khimki for the Eurocup.

British Museum asks Athens for sculpture loan

British Museum asks Athens for sculpture loan

Museum of Cycladic Art weighing up its response.

Following the British Museum’s loan last month of one of the Parthenon Marbles to the Hermitage Museum in Russia, the UK institution has made a request to borrow a precious Hellenic antiquity from Athens’ Museum of Cycladic Art.

Given the furore over the British Museum’s recent actions, the Museum of Cycladic Art is reported to be reluctant to loan the artefact for an exhibition opening in London in March entitled ‘Defining Beauty: the Body in Ancient Greek Art’.

A spokesperson for the British Museum told The Art Newspaper that the museum had made the request to borrow a piece, but that the Greek museum “had yet to respond one way or the other”.

The British Museum’s loan to Russia of the Ilissos sculpture is the first time one of the Parthenon Marbles has left the United Kingdom since entering the British Museum collection in 1816.

Despite a previously cordial curatorial relationship between the privately-owned Museum of Cycladic Art and the British Museum, the denial of a loan from Athens will be seen as a gesture to get back at the institution.

The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic art of the third millennium BC. It was founded in 1986 to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris.

Meanwhile, the British Museum is reportedly considering three more overseas loans of the Parthenon Marbles. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Berlin’s Pergamon Museum and the Louvre in Paris are likely contenders to make requests to exhibit parts of the marbles.

The British Museum has confirmed that further loans of the marbles are being considered. A spokesman told reporters: “Museums around the world have shown interest in requesting to loan from our set of Parthenon Sculptures, and we always welcome these conversations.”

“The trustees will consider any request for any part of the collection to be borrowed and then returned, subject to the usual considerations of condition and fitness to travel and this has always been made clear to the world.”

Speaking to Neos Kosmos this week, the founder of the Australia-based international committee for the restitution of the marbles, Mr Emmanuel Cominos, said that museums in Greece should be united in their stance on loans to the British Museum.

“All the museums in Greece should stick together with the Greek government’s request for the Parthenon Marbles to go back to where they belong.

“I hope the owners of the Cycladic Museum will say ‘we’ll gladly lend you something, provided that you, the British Museum, makes an unconditional commitment to return the Marbles’.”

Newcastle prepares to host Socceroos in Asian Cup semi-final

Cahill smashes bicycle kick against China

Newcastle Socceroos legend Ray Baartz says he is ecstatic the city will be hosting Australia in next Tuesday’s Asian cup semi-final.

The Socceroos arrive in Newcastle today and will train in the city tonight after making it through to the final four of the Asian Cup with a two-nil win over China in Brisbane last night.

Australia and China were locked at nil-all at half-time, but forward Tim Cahill brought the crowd to its feet when he found the back of the net off a bicycle kick in the 48th minute.

He then headed home a Jason Davidson cross to score his second.

Ray Baartz was a striker for the Socceroos in the 1960s and 70s, scoring 18 goals for the national team.

He said the city will be in for a treat if Japan makes it through to play Australia in Tuesday’s semi.

“And we’re presuming Japan are going to get through,” he said.

“They’ve got to play their game tonight, but the games I had against Japan were exciting and tough, and I don’t see this game being any different.

“Both teams are quality teams, Australia’s playing exceptionally well, it’s going to be a game that’s going to be mouth-watering, to coin a phrase.”

And there will be one last opportunity tomorrow for fans to purchase tickets to the game.

AFC organisers released an extra 2,000 tickets yesterday, which have already sold out, and a small number are also set to be released tomorrow.

But Hunter Stadium’s full capacity of more than 30,000 will not be reached, with organisers ruling out putting in extra seating in the stadium’s grassed areas.

Baartz said despite criticism of the size of the local stadium, he is certain the city will do the game proud.

“Football in Newcastle has such a strong heritage, and goes back well over 100 years, and some of the oldest clubs in Australia were formed in the Newcastle area,” he said.

“I think the atmosphere and support the Socceroos will get in Newcastle will be second to none.”

IMF says it will stay engaged with any Greek government

The International Monetary Fund said it expects to be “fully engaged” with whatever government is elected in Greece, and does not expect Athens to leave the euro zone.

“We do not see ‘Grexit’ as a possible outcome” of Greece’s election, IMF spokesman Bill Murray told reporters on Thursday, referring to a Greek ‘exit’ from the currency bloc.

The radical leftist Syriza party, which is against the bailout of the Greek economy from the IMF and European Union, seems likely to win the general elections on Sunday.

Elections 2015 | Facts & Figures

There will be 26,210 fewer voters casting their ballot in the January 25 general elections compared to the 2009 polls, while one-fifth of the Greek electorate is aged over 71 years old and is not legally obliged to vote. The largest number of Greek voters are in the 42-47 age group, with 1,003,743 individuals between these ages registered on the official electoral lists.

On January 25 a total of 9,808,760 people will be called up to vote, the majority of whom (5,060,877) are women. In the general elections of 2009 Greece had 9,834,970 registered voters and in the local and European Parliament elections of 2012 it had 9,850,802. This year’s turnout is expected to be smaller due to the fact that thousands of voters who live outside their districts did not have time to transfer their papers to their place of residence.

There will be 273,941 newly registered voters casting their ballots on January 25, of whom 224,272 are aged 18-21. The rest are new citizens who were only recently issued state identification cards and registered on the electoral lists.

The electoral region with the largest population of voters is the Second District of Athens (1,428,759), followed by the First District of Thessaloniki (512,768), the capital’s First District (476,183) and the rest of Attica (459,444).

Election budgets

Political parties that made it into Parliament in the twin elections of 2012 and are running again this year will be receiving a combined total of 4,036,000 euros in 2015, split according to the number of deputies they have and 50 percent of which will be paid upfront.

New Democracy, which holds the largest number of seats in the 300-seat House, will receive a total of 636,555 euros. Main opposition SYRIZA will get 577,110 euros and governing coalition partner PASOK, which came in third place in 2012, will receive 263,632 euros. The other parties’ election budgets will be as follows: Independent Greeks, 161,242 euros; Golden Dawn, 148,555 euros; Democratic Left, 134,239 euros; and the Greek Communist Party (KKE), 96,664 euros.

Parties whose members were elected to the European Parliament in the May 2014 elections will share 10 percent of the total election budget, or 403,600 euros. SYRIZA, which elected the most Euro MPs in May, will get 129,352 euros, followed by New Democracy with 110,659, PASOK – Olive Tree Alliance with 39,060, To Potami with 32,172 euros, KKE with 29,761 euros and Independent Greeks with 16,853.

The budget for these elections has been trimmed by 10 percent compared to May 2012.

Asian Cup 2015: Tim Cahill saves his best to help Socceroos through to semi-finals

Tim Cahill and the Socceroos celebrate a goal

Millwall and Everton might beg to differ but Tim Cahill has always saved his best for Australia, as illustrated in Thursday’s 2-0 win over China in the Asian Cup quarter-final in Brisbane.

In an age when many players are torn between the loyalties to their club and country, Cahill has never wavered from his belief that his nation always comes first.

And time and time again, he has saved Australia, conjuring up goals from nothing when his team needed them most.

In 2006, he became the first Australian to score a goal at a World Cup, scoring twice against Japan as the Socceroos registered their first win in the tournament.

Four years later, he scored the Socceroos’ second goal in a 2-1 win over Serbia at the World Cup in South Africa. And at last year’s World Cup in Brazil, he netted a stunner against the Netherlands that was rated one of the best of the event.

In Brisbane on Thursday night he did it again, scoring twice in the triumph over China in the quarter-finals with the first coming from a bicycle kick few players his age would even contemplate, let alone pull off.

The Lang Park crowd roared with delirium, as the 35-year-old picked himself up and ran to the corner for his trademark celebration, punching out the flag.

“It was instinctive,” Cahill said. “The World Cup was probably a fluke and today was a probably a fluke again.”

Lucky or not, he did it again 16 minutes later, heading a cross from Mathew Leckie into the corner, taking his international goal tally to 39, the most by any Australian.

Cahill has long been a world-class finisher, scoring more than 50 goals for both Millwall and Everton during his time in England, but he says it is playing for his country that means the most.

“I still know I can change games, I still know I can write my own script and at the same time effect football in Australia in a big way,” he said.

“I’ve never ever once not believed in the national team jersey … and when I get my chance then I have to take it.”

Postecoglou praises Cahill rescue act

Cahill’s brace could not have come at a better time for Australia. The Asian Cup hosts had lost their last group match against South Korea and were struggling to get the ball past a well-organised Chinese defence, squandering a string of chances despite dominating possession.

“It was a tough game, we knew China would be a very difficult opponent,” Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou said.

“I’m really proud of the fact the boys stuck to the game plan … and once Timmy produced his magic, we never looked back.”

For China, it was a bittersweet ending to a tournament where it showed signs of shedding it tag as football’s sleeping giant.

China only just scraped into the tournament as the last qualifier but won all its group fixtures and came unstuck only a moment of magic from Cahill.

“If you lose your concentration even for one second it can cause terrible results,” China coach Alain Perrin said.

“Before Cahill scored one of his goals, one of our players fell in the penalty area and our players lost focus on the game.

“My team also tried their best. Of course, they are very disappointed, because it means our journey at the Asian Cup is finished.”

Mystery ‘alien’ radio signal picked up in space

Supernovae are not responsible for the strange radio signals which scientists have discovered in space

Radio waves in space could be evaporating black holes, alien communication or merging neutron stars.
A mysterious radio signal which may have come from a black hole, a neutron star or even an alien civilisation, has been picked up by astronomers.

Fast radio bursts, which last only milliseconds, are quick, bright flashes of radio waves from unknown sources in the universe, which emit as much energy as the Sun does in an entire day.

The first one was discovered in 2007 by sifting through old data, and only seven more have been spotted since then.

Now, for the first time, the mysterious phenomenon has been observed happening live.

Exactly what may be causing the signal is hotly debated by scientists. Possibilities range from evaporating black holes to alien communication and merging neutron stars.

“These events are one of the biggest mysteries in the universe,” said Carnegie Observatories’ acting director John Mulchaey.

“Until now, astronomers were not able to catch one of these events in the act.”

Scientists had been looking for the bursts using twelve telescopes in Australia, California, the Canary Islands, Chile, Germany, Hawaii, and India.

Because the radio waves were ‘caught in the act’ scientists were able to check for other wavelengths such as infrared light, or x-rays to try and work out their source. However they found nothing.

“The fact that we did not see light in other wavelengths eliminates a number of astronomical phenomena that are associated with violent events such as gamma-ray bursts from exploding stars and supernovae, which were otherwise candidates for the burst,” said Daniele Malesani.

But the way that the waves were polarised suggested that it had been near to an object with a large magnetic field.

“The theories are now that the radio wave burst might be linked to a very compact type of object — such as neutron stars or black holes and the bursts could be connected to collisions or ‘star quakes.’

“Now we know more about what we should be looking for,” says Daniele Malesani, of the University of Copenhagan.

Previous signals indicated that the bursts originated from outside of our Milky Way galaxy.

The team’s data indicates that the burst originated up to 5.5 billion light-years away.

Emily Petroff, a PhD candidate from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, added: “These bursts were generally discovered weeks or months or even more than a decade after they happened.

“We’re the first to catch one in real time.”

Their work is published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
