OFI Crete is going under

Reports in the Greek press converge to OFI Crete soon becoming the second club in the Super League, after Niki Volou, to drop out of the championship for financial reasons.

The historic club from Iraklio has seen a total of 21 players depart in protest for not getting paid, leaving coach Nikos Anastopoulos with nine eligible players for the Cup game at Panthrakikos on Wednesday and the league match with Olympiakos this weekend.

OFI has already suffered this season from the departure of its previous coach, Gennaro Gattuso, and of its president Manthos Poulinakis, it has had six points deducted due to debts to a former player, and it is now facing a player crisis that will likely mean it will have to drop out of the league and the cup immediately.

The federation had issued a warning against OFI ahead of the game with Panetolikos last week on a no-pay-no-play basis, regarding debts to three other former players, but veteran OFI striker Nikos Machlas saw to it that some 140,000 euros were collected just in time for OFI not to forfeit that game at Agrinio.

Now, however, the situation appears irreversible, as no knight in shining armor is in sight to intervene in order to save OFI from a disgraceful relegation, probably to the third division just like in the cases of AEK and Aris.

President Obama forgets to mention the 18 trillion national debt

images506YY9WJ

If there were any doubts that President Obama has moved beyond trying to tackle the $18 trillion national debt, his State of the Union address should put them to rest: He’s over it.

The president on Tuesday night pitched an ambitious package of tax hikes for some, tax cuts for others, education aid and other government protections. He plans to hit the road on Wednesday to promote those policies, visiting Boise, Idaho, and after that heading to Kansas.

But absent from Obama’s address was any mention of the national debt.

And, in a break from past addresses, he made no call for reforming entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, the latter being a major driver of deficits and debt. Instead, he pointed to those programs as models for how the government protects Americans from “adversity” and examples of the kind of “middle-class economics” he supports.

“That’s what middle-class economics is — the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, everyone plays by the same set of rules,” Obama said.

Senior administration officials, in a briefing before the address, admitted the omission of any call for entitlement reform is an acknowledgement that the chances of a “grand bargain” on the budget is not likely during the next two years. The president also may simply not want to antagonize liberal Democrats, for a slim shot at a deal with Republicans.

But the failure to mention the issue, which still weighs heavily over the country’s long-term fiscal outlook despite shrinking deficits, did not go unnoticed by fiscal watchdogs.

Maya MacGuineas, head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt, said in a statement that while his focus on economic growth was important, “his failure to level with the American people about our serious long-term fiscal challenges was disappointing.”

She acknowledged deficits have fallen – from consistently over $1 trillion every year – to their lowest levels of the Obama administration.

“But they are projected to rise again next year and exceed $1 trillion annually within a decade,” she said. “Meanwhile, debt levels are the highest they have ever been other than around World War II, and without a serious course correction they will only continue to rise over the long run.”

The only references in Obama’s address to debt were related to student debt. And the only references to deficits were to point out how they have fallen under his term.

But Republicans complained that Obama’s plan for the next two years calls for tax hikes not to reduce the deficit further, but fund new programs.

“President Obama has increased our debt by $7.6 trillion over 6 years. Last year the federal government collected a record amount of $3 trillion dollars in revenue. Now he wants even more money to expand his dysfunctional government,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said in a statement.

Another subject that has shown up in past State of the Union addresses, but was absent from this one, was Al Qaeda – an offshoot of which claimed responsibility for the recent Paris terror attacks.

Still, Obama said Tuesday night that the U.S. stands “united” with the victims of that attack and others. And he discussed the U.S. military campaign, with its allies, against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

“We will continue to hunt down terrorists and dismantle their networks, and we reserve the right to act unilaterally, as we have done relentlessly since I took office to take out terrorists who pose a direct threat to us and our allies,” he said.

‘Like a Horror Movie’: Rare frilled shark caught off Australia

sharke44.jpg

A rarely seen frilled shark known as the living fossil was caught off Australia (SETFIA)

A rare frilled shark, whose species dates back 80 million years, was caught in a fishing trawler off Australia’s coast.

“It’s a freaky thing,” Simon Boag, the chief executive officer at South East Trawl Fishing Association, told Australia’s ABC Rural. “I don’t think you would want to show it to little children before they went to bed.”

The association said the frilled shark is often referred to as a “living fossil.” It is described as having an eel-like body with three fins on its back. It gets its name from the six pairs of gill slits that give it a fringed appearance.

The shark, which reaches about 6 feet in length, has 300 needle-shaped teeth in 25 rows and it is believed to capture its prey by bending its body like a snake. This particular shark was nearly as large as they grow and caught at 2,296 feet below the surface, the association said.

“This guy was just unlucky,” Boag said, since the shark was caught in shallower depths than it is usually found.

David Guillot, the captain of the Western Alliance Vessell, told radio station 3AW Drive that the shark was unlike any fish he’s ever seen.

“I’ve been at sea for 30 years and I’ve never seen a shark that looks like that,” he said. “It was like a large eel, probably 1.5 meters [5 feet] long, and the body was quite different to any other shark I’d ever seen.”

Australian Open 2015: Nick Kyrgios wins through to third round

Nick Kyrgios

If you asked Tennis Australia to nominate a fourth-round encounter that would fill both the centre court and guarantee millions of eyeballs, it would be a match-up between Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer, the most flamboyant of the new Australian breed versus the game’s greatest monument.

That match-up is more than a mere possibility as a result of Kyrgios’s continued surge. On the same day he was fined $4500 for misbehaving on court, the confident 19-year-old progressed to the third round by cutting down the imposing 23rd seed Ivo Karlovic, 7-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 on a rapturous showcourt three.

That this wasn’t much of an upset is a measure of Kyrgios’ vast talent, and the considerable weaponry he owns compared with virtually any other teenager. It was a performance that built upon – and exceeded for quality – the youngster’s tough five setter in the opening round.

To reach a date with Federer, Kyrgios will have to negotiate his third round opponent Malek Jaziri, ranked 75. On form, he’d be favoured. Federer, of course, would have to keep his part of the deal and dispatch Andreas Seppi. Tennis Australia and more particularly Channel Seven will be hoping for what would be easily the most hyped match of the Open to date.

Kyrgios said he didn’t usually look ahead in the draw, “but it’s hard when social media these days when guys are saying Kyrgios, Federer fourth round when the draw just came out. It’s hard not to…but I think especially for me, this tournament I wasn’t looking too far ahead.”

Kyrgios’ on court demeanour has been criticised – either subtly or overtly – by Australian tennis greats Pat Rafter and Fred Stolle, and on Wednesday he was fined an aggregate of $4500 for “racquet abuse” and “audible obscenity” from his first rounder.

But there were no tantrums or emotional upheaval in his defeat of 211cm Karlovic. No racquets were smashed by Kyrgios this time. There was no need. In what was a composed and controlled display, the Aussie prodigy contradicted his youth and his volatile image. He appeared to heed Rafter’s advice to tone it down, answering criticism of his temperament.

Post-match, Kyrgios described his relationship with Rafter as “pretty good, as far as I know. We got pretty close in Perth…I think it’s good…He only wants to see the best out of us guys.”

The exuberant Australian also demonstrated that he has more game – certainly a greater diversity of shots and athletic traits – than Karlovic, who is seeded 23 and can out-serve anyone, but whose serve faltered at critical moments.

Kyrgios said he felt “really confident” after defeating Karlovic. “With that serve, he can obviously beat a lot of players,. I think he beat Djokovic a couple of weeks ago. I knew he was going to be tough. That gives me massive confidence.”

Kyrgios tends to blow opponents off the court, and what was noteworthy about this performance was that he won with the steadier game – without less winners, yet far fewer errors (13 to 33) than Karlovic. More to the point, he won the crucial points and showed few jitters in potential white-knuckle moments.

None of the points were as important as those that enabled the Aussie to take the first set tiebreak (7-4). To this point, points won against serve had been precious. Kyrgios got the mini-break in the tiebreak when Karlovic – whose lesser mobility was exposed somewhat – sent a half-baked backhand approach shot wide to create a set point.

Improbably, Karlovic then double faulted to hand the Aussie the first set. The momentum was sufficient for Kyrgios to break Ivo in the opening game of the second set and, in a Serve-Off like this, that was enough to secure the second set, 6-4.

Kyrgios was broken just once, in the decisive game of the third set, when Karlovic claimed the set 7-5. The kid, though, wasn’t flustered. He would again win the telling points, aided by some ill-timed double faults by the Croatian. A break in the fifth game sufficed. The teen served it out.

When we might have expected an extravagant celebration from Kyrgios, he merely went down on bended knee – as if making a marriage proposal – and then calmly shook hands with the towering Ivo.

Whether he meets Federer or not, Kyrgios confirmed that he can rise to the occasion. And, from this day forth, all matches involving Kyrgios here are big occasions.
