Liverpool v Chelsea: Key Capital One Cup semi-final battles

Ahead of their Capital One Cup semi-final, Matt Stanger looks at the key battles between Liverpool and Chelsea…

Diego Costa v Martin Skrtel

It’s fair to say that Costa won this battle the last time these two teams met, scoring the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory at Anfield in November. The 26-year-old proved a handful for Skrtel throughout, managing five shots and creating more shooting opportunities (four) than any other player on the pitch.

“It was a fantastic performance and an expression of ambition,” said Jose Mourinho of his team’s performance. “In the second half, against Liverpool, at Anfield, every team accepts a point as a good result. My team didn’t accept that, so the way they performed in the second half was an expression of that ambition and self-belief they have at the moment.”

Costa embodied the Blues’ fighting spirit, with the image of his ripped shirt flapping in the wind perfectly capturing his dogged display. Skrtel will need to be at the height of his powers to deny the Premier League’s top scorer, with the outcome of the first leg potentially hinging on this duel.

Raheem Sterling v Cesar Azpilicueta

Following Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Aston Villa, in which Fabio Borini scored his first goal for the club since April 2013, there is a strong chance that Brendan Rodgers will stick with the same attacking line-up. That would mean Raheem Sterling starting on the right of a front three, pitting him against Chelsea left-back Azpilicueta.

Sterling’s pace and trickery will pose a significant threat to the Spaniard, with the Liverpool forward contributing to nine goals (four strikes and five assists) in the Premier League and only five players averaging more dribbles per game.

However, it is Azpilicueta’s willingness to get forward that could decide this battle. The 25-year-old set up Costa’s winning goal at Anfield in November with a typical lung-bursting run down the left and will be eager to support the attack again as Chelsea go in search of a first-leg advantage. Sterling must be wary of his defensive duties as well as the need to impose himself in the final third.

Nemanja Matic v Jordan Henderson

Although it was Costa who scored the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory earlier in the season and Azpilicueta who provided the assist, the Blues’ fight-back owed much to Matic’s commanding display in midfield. Mourinho’s Serbian ‘giant’ made more tackles than any other player on the pitch and also made three times as many interceptions as any of his team-mates.

Henderson, on the other hand, struggled to make an impact in the centre of the pitch. The 24-year-old recorded the worst passing accuracy of any Liverpool player to complete 90 minutes and was also blunt in an attacking sense, failing to create a single chance and firing two shots off-target.

With doubts over Steven Gerrard’s fitness, Lucas’ selection in the middle may give Henderson more licence to roam. His intelligent runs from deep have previously proved effective in creating space for the Reds’ attack, and he will hope to keep Matic busy to allow the likes of Sterling and Philippe Coutinho room to cause problems.

Brisbane revels in Asian Cup finals boost

A sellout crowd for the Socceroos’ Asian Cup quarter-final showdown with China on Thursday is expected to give Brisbane’s tourism economy another boost.

More than 48,000 fans saw the Aussies lose 1-0 to South Korea at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, but that did not deter them from quickly booking in for Thursday’s encounter.

Asian Cup organisers expect Thursday night’s match to sell out, continuing a run of big crowds in the Asian Cup so far.

It’s not just Australia’s matches that have had healthy crowds since the first Brisbane game on January 10 and that looks set to continue with the final match on Thursday.

Asian Cup Local Organising Committee CEO Michael Brown said the crowds, which have exceeded 250,000 across competition venues, had been strong in Brisbane.

“We have been thrilled with the support from fans in Brisbane for all matches, not just the Socceroos,” he said.

“We have averaged crowds of 21,000 across the five games over seven days at Brisbane Stadium to date.

“Thousands of tickets were sold to that (Socceroos v China) match on Saturday night after it was confirmed Australia would be in the Brisbane quarter-final.

“There are still some good seats available but we do expect it to sell-out as did the Socceroos’ match against Korea Republic on Saturday, so fans are advised to secure their seats quickly for the last Asian Cup match in Brisbane.”

On Monday afternoon, tickets were still available in three categories from $29.74 Category three tickets ranging up to $70.35 Category 1 tickets.

China’s fans have been turning out in droves for their national team and that will be expected again for Thursday night’s sudden-death clash.

There’s good news for travelling fans too, with plenty of accommodation available around Suncorp Stadium.

And while some major events see spikes in hotel prices, it seems fans will have some spare change with a number of discount deals being offered this week.

Australia takes on China in the Asian Cup quarter-final on Thursday night at 8.30pm Queensland time.

Australian Open: Thanasi Kokkinakis stronger than ever for his second wildcard appearance

Advantage Kokkinakis

Thanasi Kokkinakis will be in the best shape of his career at his second Australian Open appearance, and has been tipped for Melbourne Park success by world number one Novak Djokovic.

With a full year on tour under his belt, the 18-year-old from Adelaide told Neos Kosmos this week that he was raring to go and keen to build on his success at last year’s Open when he won his first ever grand slam match against Igor Sijsling.

“I was fortunate enough to get a wild card last year and I feel I’ve improved a lot, so hopefully I can go a bit further this year.”

World number one Djokovic told Fox Sports this week that he expected Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios to do well in front of a home crowd.

“They’re very talented players,” he said, “and I’m sure with the crowd behind them they’ll be very tough opponents.”

Kokkinakis, who is currently ranked 149th in the ATP world rankings, said that his goal was to play well enough at the Australian Open to crack the top 100.

“That’s not easy, but I feel that I’ve got the game to compete with the top one hundred players … I feel I can do it.

“There’s a bit more pressure than last year but I’ve got to trust the work I did in the off-season, so I should be right.”

Asked how he handles the media attention that comes with being picked for a senior grand slam event (he reached two junior grand slam finals in 2013), Kokkinakis said it was a matter of embracing the experience.

“You just have to make sure you’re dedicated on and off the court, put in all the focus every session, and be as well prepared as you can.

“You have to chill out, not get too distracted by social media, and have a good time.”

Last year Kokkinakis suffered from cramps during his first round victory, before being defeated three sets to love by Raphael Nadal in the second round.

This time around Thanasi feels he has more to give and the stamina to compete with the best.

“Physically I’ve improved, in all areas I think I’ve improved. Hopefully I’m a bit fitter and stronger.”

Thanasi Kokkinakis has been drawn against 11th seed Ernests Gulbis in the opening round.

Headliners announced for Melbourne and Sydney Greek festivals

Headliners announced for Melbourne and Sydney Greek festivals

Dimitris Basis

Staged in the heart of the City of Melbourne’s Greek precinct, the festival is expected to attract close to 10,000 people over the two days.

Organisers of two of the largest celebrations of Greek culture outside of Greece, the Lonsdale Street Festival and the Greek Festival of Sydney, have officially announced Dimitris Basis and Zoi Papadopoulou as the headliners for 2015.

“I am excited to be travelling to Melbourne and Sydney to perform. To see such a large celebration of Greek culture so far away from Greece is a testament to the strength of the Greek community in sharing our culture with the rest of Australia,” said Basis.

With both festivals taking place over the same weekend, the duo will be taking to the stage with a seven-piece band, first performing in Melbourne with a special Valentine’s Day performance.

Staged in the heart of the City of Melbourne’s Greek precinct, the festival is expected to attract close to 10,000 people over the two days.

Presented by Delphi Bank, for the first time Melbourne’s festival will be hosted by the GOCMV’s newly built Centre for Contemporary Greek Culture.

“Melbourne and its people have shown great love of Greek culture and we are once again pleased to bring the best of Greece to the heart of the city for another year,” said director of The Greek Centre, Jorge Menidis.

“A highlight among the range of activities across the two days will be the Saturday night performance by Dimitris Basis and Zoi Papadopoulou. The festival is honoured to host these two performers who will bring the street alive with a mix of popular and traditional Greek music that will appeal to people of all ages,” he said.

Aside from bringing two of Greece’s biggest performers to Australian audiences, the festival will also feature a range of free entertainment, food stalls, children’s activities and cooking demonstrations.

The 2015 Lonsdale Street Festival and The 2015 Greek Festival of Sydney are both free events, with both festivals to be held on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February. For more information visit www.antipodesfestival.com.au and www.greekfestivalofsydney.com.au

Fronditha Care holds recruitment conference in Greece

Fronditha Care holds recruitment conference in Greece

Chairman Mike Zafiropoulos (L), CEO George Lekakis (C) with Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Michaelia Cash, on the signing of the deal.

Availability of 457 visas

After a landmark deal in 2014 which created a direct labour agreement with the Australian government to sponsor 20 Greek nationals per annum, Fronditha Care held a recruitment conference in Greece last week.

The existing agreement with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection allows Fronditha Care to sponsor people qualified in nursing and aged care, and when a rare opportunity presented itself, CEO George Lekakis told Neos Kosmos the community care organisation took advantage of direct links to hold a conference in the Greek capital.

“We took the opportunity to host a seminar in Athens to raise further awareness of the labour agreement provisions that we have and the need to recruit future personal care workers on a 457 visa at Fronditha Care,” he said.

“This once-off seminar was hosted by one of our HR officers, Yiannis Androulakis, who was in Greece for personal holiday reasons, but I wanted him to use the opportunity to spread the word and to recruit future employees for our wonderful organisation.”

The event, advertised via student recruitment networks, was hailed a success, with large numbers pouring into the Royal Olympic Hotel in Athens, many of whom, he said, have made further enquiries into prospective employment.

“A lot of people in the networks now know of the availability of this 457 visa and people are referred appropriately. People make direct contact through us and also look out our website for necessary information and follow the appropriate steps, which are what steps one needs to take in order to qualify for employment, and also the recruitment processes as well.”

Along with the conference, Fronditha Care is also appealing to people locally who are keen to work in personal care and can comfortably speak Greek.

National terror threat level for police sector raised to high

5968646-3x2-340x227

Australia’s domestic security agency has raised the national terrorism threat level for all police to high.

The threat level for police moves from medium to high for officers in New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia in recognition of the danger they face as first responders.

Australia’s national alert level was raised to high in September last year, classifying a terrorist attack as likely but not imminent.

It also follows the recent terror-related events such as the siege in Sydney’s Martin Place, shootings at the Canadian Parliament in October and a number of shootings in France that began with an attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The Australian Federal Police issued a statement this morning citing recent terrorism events around the world as reasons for elevating the alert level.

“The factors that lead to the elevated terrorism threat level for Australia to high in September 2014 persist and the security environment remains increasingly complex and challenging,” the statement said.

“Recent events in France, Canada and Australia serve as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with policing.”

Police said while relatively small, an increasing number of Australians linked to overseas terrorist groups had the intent and capability to conduct an attack against Australian police.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said there was no one event that led to the raised alert.

“The new threat level specifically has taken into account instances of attacks on police internationally on a number of occasions in the past few months,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“There has been no one specific incident that has occurred in Australia which has triggered the reassessment to the higher level.”

He said police in Queensland had been advised to be aware of their environment and their own personal safety as well as that of their loved ones.

Commissioner Stewart said concerns raised last year about a lack of body armour for police had been addressed.

“I was very clear that we do have adequate ballistic vests available for all of our police when they’re doing their normal duties and we have in place the concept that if an officer feels that they need to wear personal, covert body armour, then they can apply for that and it will be granted,” he said.

“The condition of that though is when I as the Police Commissioner agree to provide personal protective equipment like that, optional equipment like that, once I approve that the officer must use it.”

Western Australian police officers and staff were advised about the reassessment of the alert level this morning via a broadcast.

They were reminded of the need to remain vigilant and apply good security practices.

South Australia’s Assistant Police Commissioner Bryan Fahy said today’s change was a formal alignment of the threat level for police and the general terrorism threat level, and noted that all jurisdictions reviewed their security and risk management strategies in September.

“SAPOL has reinforced the need for all its staff to remain vigilant and maintain ongoing situational awareness,” he said.

“The message provided to the wider community to go about normal daily life but with a heightened sense of awareness and a willingness to report suspicious behaviour to police has not changed.

“Information from the public may be vital to ensuring that police can keep our community safe.”

New South Wales Police issued a statement on the change this morning.

“As first responders to emergencies and violent incidents, police officers are regularly placed in high risk situations. Safety arrangements for NSW Police will continue to be actively reviewed,” the statement said.

Holden Commodore Name Will Live On: Official

Holden has confirmed the Commodore name will live on post-2017, when the carmaker is scheduled to cease local manufacturing.

At that point, the large sedan, wagon and utility models as we currently know them will effectively be no more, and whether the Commodore name would die along with them was – until know – unclear.

But Holden says customer feedback has driven the decision to retain the Commodore name, which will adorn a future imported “large car” from the global GM stables beginning in 2018.

“The next-generation large car we have selected from GM’s global portfolio is worthy of the iconic Commodore nameplate,” Holden Executive Director of Sales, Peter Keley, said.

“When it arrives in 2018, our new large car will honour Commodore’s heritage and support a long and successful future for Holden in Australia and New Zealand. Holden and Commodore aren’t going anywhere; they will remain pillars of Australian motoring for many years to come.”

Mr Keley said 17 key focus points for any future Commodore were put to a group of potential customers, including whether Holden should retain the badge that first arrived in showrooms in 1978.

Around 70 percent supported the decision to retain the name, saying it carried a reputation for reliable family cars and the associated performance models.

The sales boss acknowledged not all Holden fans will be happy with the decision to continue the Commodore’s legacy post-2017, but moved to reassure them the 2018 model will be worthy of the name.

“We know the decision to retain or retire the Commodore nameplate will stir passionate responses among Holden fans and customers,” Mr Keley said. “That’s why we’ll ensure the next-generation car drives like a Commodore should.”

Mr Keley said development for the next Commodore was already underway, with tuning for Australian conditions being honed by local engineers utilising the facilities at Holden’s Lang Lang proving ground.

Tuning for local conditions was a key finding from Holden’s focus group research, along with affordability, power, interior space and exterior styling.

Customers were also after a car with towing ability and a continuation of Commodore’s luxury and sport variants.

So now the question is: where will Holden’s next Commodore come from?

A range of options from the US out of the Buick, Chevrolet or Cadillac line-ups are on the shortlist, while a rebadged Opel Insignia is also a strong possibility.

The Insignia is due to arrive back in Australia this year wearing Holden badges, following Opel’s failed attempt to launch locally as a stand-alone brand. Holden’s New Zealand boss hinted that Insignia had been given the nod midway through last year.

Then there’s the Buick Avenir sedan concept that landed at the Detroit Auto Show last week.

Designed by the Holden team in Australia, the Avenir may also preview elements of the next Commodore; or at least a replacement for the Holden Caprice.

The Caprice badge was not expected to survive post-2017 however, and Mr Keley has previously ruled out offering a large, long-wheelbase luxury sedan in its place.

Συμβούλιο Απόδημου Ελληνισμού: Άλυτα παραμένουν τα ζωτικά θέματα της Ομογένειας

sae

Joe Hockey raises prospect of Australians living until 150 to justify budget cuts

imagesWYG6DLQA

Treasurer Joe Hockey has raised the prospect of people living until 150 to explain why Australians should accept cuts to government benefits and pay a greater share of their health costs.

Mr Hockey also refused to deny reports that he and former health minister Peter Dutton opposed a $20 cut to Medicare rebates for short consultations in a meeting of cabinet’s powerful Expenditure Review Committee. The government abandoned the planned cut, which was due to take effect on Monday, after a revolt by doctors and Senate crossbenchers.

“I’m not going to engage in a discussion on gossip,” Mr Hockey said on Monday in an interview with 3AW’s Neil Mitchell when asked about the leak.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott reportedly insisted on the rebate cut – aimed to save money and discourage “six minute medicine” – despite the senior ministers’ protests.

Mr Hockey said he supported the decision to abandon the $20 rebate cut, but that the cost of Medicare needed to be kept under control.

The Treasurer said his five-year old son had broken his foot over the Christmas break. Although his son attended multiple consultations and X-rays, Mr Hockey only had to contribute $40 to pay for a waterproof cast.

“That is wrong,” Mr Hockey said, noting he is a high income earner who could afford to contribute more.

The government still plans to introduce a $5 optional co-payment for GP visits.

“There’s great news on the horizon for Australia,” Mr Hockey said. “The fact we are living longer is great news. It’s kind of remarkable that somewhere in the world today, it’s highly probable that a child is being born that is going to live to 150. That’s a long time.

“The question is how we live with dignity and ensure we have a good quality of life the whole way through. This is the conversation we are going to have with Australia over the next few months.”

The government will release the latest Intergenerational Report early this year, which is expected to show that the ageing population will make it difficult for the government to pay for the services Australians have come to expect.

Some researchers have said that drugs that can slow the ageing process are likely to become available within 10 years, raising the prospect of people eventually living to 150 or more.
