Israeli attack follows collapse of Gaza ceasefire and reported capture of Hadar Goldin

GAZA

Gaza City: Israel’s response to the possibility that militants in Gaza had captured one of its soldiers soon after a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire came into force was swift and deadly.

Its military unleashed an attack on the southern border city of Rafah that was so furious, the Ministry of Health pleaded for international assistance to evacuate the dead and injured from the fire zone.

Israeli forces, backed by tank fire and airstrikes, moved deeper into southern Gaza late Friday to search for the missing soldier, 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, as residents reported intensive tank and mortar fire around Rafah and Khan Younis.

At least 107 Palestinians were killed in Rafah alone, many of them children, and more than 350 were wounded, local health authorities said, describing scenes of chaos as al-Nasser Hospital struggled to cope with the influx of dead and wounded. It took the Palestinian death toll to 1635, with a further 8840 wounded, many of them civilians, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said.

Israel has lost 63 soldiers and three civilians. Militants in the Gaza Strip launched at least 61 rockets into Israel following the ceasefire’s collapse, including two on Saturday morning, the IDF reported.

Both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of breaking the ceasefire that came into effect at 8am local time on Friday, with the United States backing Israel’s assertions that Hamas militants had taken advantage of the ceasefire to launch an attack on Israeli soldiers near Rafah.

It was in that attack, Israel says, that Lt Goldin

was captured and two other IDF soldiers were killed, about 90 minutes after the ceasefire came into effect.

“It was an outrageous violation of the ceasefire negotiated over the past several days, and of the assurances given to the United States and the United Nations,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said. “After the horrific loss of life in this attack and its aftermath, it would be a tragedy if this outrageous attack leads to more suffering and loss of life on both sides of this conflict.”

violation of the ceasefire but stressed it had “no independent means to verify exactly what happened.” Through a spokesman, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the reported violation by Hamas, saying he was “shocked and profoundly disappointed by these developments”.

However, a statement released by al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, cast doubt on Israel’s claims that Hamas was holding 2nd Lieutenant Goldin. It says it was at 7am – prior to the ceasefire – that a group of its fighters ambushed Israeli soldiers in the south of Gaza and in the ensuing firefight, both Israeli soldiers and militants died.

“We have lost contact with the group of mujahedeen who were at the ambush,” the Qassam Brigades statement reads.

If the Israeli soldier was there, he was killed in the ambush, the Qassam Brigades said, claiming it saw Israeli soldiers advancing further inside Gaza, indicating the IDF’s intention to take more ground during the ceasefire.

Lt Goldin is from Kfar Saba, near Tel Aviv, but is understood to have spent time in Britain when he was aged 12 and 15, when his parents – both academics – taught briefly at Cambridge University.

Both were said to have been active in Cambridge’s Jewish community.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, Hamas’ deputy leader, told Al-Arabiya news channel that al-Qassam Brigades had not carried out any military operations after 8am when the temporary lull in fighting came into force.

Thousands of Palestinians were caught in the shelling on Friday as the ceasefire collapsed just hours after it began, many of them taking the opportunity of the lull to go back to their homes they had been forced to leave weeks ago.

In Beit Hanoun, Sihan Nasser had come with her family to see what was left of their house that they had only been able to visit once since July 15 when IDF shelling had forced them to flee.

“We were not able to retrieve anything from the rubble, four stories of the house had collapsed completely,” she said. In her extended family, 11 people had died since the conflict began on July 8, she said.

As Fairfax Media walked along one of the main streets of Beit Hanoun, past small apartment blocks blasted to the ground, donkeys and horses lay dead on the streets and whole families sat in the rubble in front of their devastated homes.

Women were weeping. “We returned here during a short ceasefire four days ago and our house was still standing, now there is nothing left,” said Ayman Kefana. Soon after, Israeli tanks stationed just a kilometre away near the border began shelling again and families began to run as the thud of shells sounded nearby and plumes of dust rose into the air. It was clear the ceasefire was over.

Morrison accused of being a coward over asylum seekers

CORRECTION-AUSTRALIA-IMMIGRATION-REFUGEE-SRILANKA-INDIA

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has defended the decision to send 157 asylum seekers from a WA detention centre to Nauru amid criticism from the opposition and the Greens, who have labelled the move as “embarrassing” and “cowardly”.

“When no-one took up the opportunity [to speak to Indian consular officials] then their reason for being at Curtin [detention centre] no longer existed,” Minister Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

He confirmed that the 157 asylum seekers had been flown on three separate flights late last night to arrive on Nauru earlier today.

He dismissed criticism of the decision, saying the government has been clear about its offshore detention policy.

“At the end of the day people [that arrive by boats] don’t end up in Australia. The government has a strong will on these issues and that will continue.”

Asylum seeker transfer condemned as ‘cowardly’

The decision was condemned by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who said his actions are a “disgrace” and “cowardly”.

The senator was speaking at a rally in Adelaide, where she said asylum seeker children in particular were being used a “political pawns”.

“They are being used as political pawns in a desperate game for the minister to look tough,” she said.

“Well, you don’t look tough mate. You look like a coward.”

What we have is a shambles: Opposition

Opposition Immigration spokesman Richard Marles said the government had “lost control” of its asylum seeker policy and was making “policy on the run”.

“This is a serious and complex area of policy but we have a cowboy in charge,” he told reporters in Melbourne.

He criticised the late night transfer of 157 asylum seekers from WA’s Curtin Detention Centre to Nauru, saying it was a “sneaky media strategy”.

“The only reason that they [the asylum seekers] have been put through this wretched rollercoaster is to protect their [the government’s] personal poilticial scoreboard that is today in tatters.”

Children among 157 asylum seekers sent to Nauru

The 157 Tamil asylum seekers have been at the centre of a political storm after they were detained at sea on a Customs ship for three weeks before being flown to Western Australia last month.

The group includes 50 children, News Corporation reported.

Lawyer in dark over asylum seeker clients’ transfer

The lawyer for a a group of Tamil asylum seekers at the centre of a High Court challenge says he had no idea his clients were being transferred to Nauru in a secret overnight operation.

Lawyer George Newhouse said he thought they were still in Australia before learning of the move from media.

“I found out from News Corp just like everyone else,” he told AAP.

“What happened, the veil of secrecy that this government has over operational matters?”

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison confirmed on Friday those on board the most recent asylum-seeker boat would not be resettled in Australia.

Claim asylum seekers were advised not to talk ‘a lie’

Mr Morrison said the asylum seekers refused to talk to the Indian high commissioner and lawyers – or “boat chasers” as he called them – had advised the group not to accept a deal to be returned to India, News Corp reported.

Mr Newhouse said that was a lie.

“Any suggestion that we advised our client not to talk to anyone is false,” he said.

“We have not had a proper opportunity to inform our clients of their rights and their options because of the secrecy surrounding them.

“And I am not calling him (Mr Morrison) names for sending children to an abusive environment in Nauru.”

The Immigration Department has been contacted for comment.

Australia sends asylum-seekers to Nauru, as India offer refused

SOME 157 asylum-seekers who were detained at sea for weeks by Australia have been sent to the Pacific island of Nauru after rejecting a return to India, officials said Saturday.

The group, thought to be mostly ethnic Tamils from Sri Lanka and including 50 children, left the Indian port of Pondicherry in June but were intercepted by Australian authorities and held on a Customs ship for weeks.

They were eventually brought to the Australian mainland so they could be interviewed by Indian consular officials with a view to returning them to that country, but Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said Saturday they all refused to meet the officials.

“The 157 illegal maritime arrivals… have been transferred to Nauru overnight for offshore processing, following their decision to refuse to meet with Indian consular officials,” Morrison said in a statement.

Morrison said the government had provided a “rare opportunity” for many of those onboard the vessel to “go back to where they had been living in safety in India, where they have family and friends, rather than go to Nauru”.

“It is very disappointing that after having had access to their legal representatives on July 29, all 157 illegal maritime arrivals coincidentally chose not to talk to Indian consular officials,” he said.

Lawyers representing many of the group have challenged their treatment by Australia in the High Court, claiming false imprisonment, but Morrison said the government had acted methodically since they were picked up.

He has previously said the group were likely economic migrants who had been living in safety in India for some time.

Morrison said Saturday   that by refusing to speak to Indian officials the group were now unable to take advantage of the offer made by the Indian government to consider taking them back, even if they were not Indian citizens.

“There will also now be around 50 more children on Nauru, many of which, if not all, could have been going back to India,” Morrison said.

The group is the first boatload of asylum-seekers to reach the Australian mainland since December, after Canberra hardened its policy on unauthorised boats to ensure some were turned back where possible.

Under Australia’s policy to stop people-smuggling boats, all asylum-seekers arriving by boat are sent to Nauru and Papua New Guinea for processing and resettlement, even if they are found to be refugees.

Morrison said in the current case, if they were found to be refugees they will be resettled on Nauru, not in Australia.

“If they are not found to be a refugee they will go back to Sri Lanka, not India. Going back to India, where they are likely to have family and friends, is no longer an option for those who were living there,” he said.

Australia:Race laws should be retained says Guy

GuyMatthew57250

Matthew Guy, Vic Minister for Multicultural Affairs.

Victorian Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship says current race laws should stay the same.

Victoria’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs Matthew Guy says current race laws are strong and should not be altered.

“While others remained silent, the Victorian Government made it very clear that it considers it vital that the Commonwealth does not weaken the protection in place against race hate, and instead continues to demonstrate leadership in promoting and encouraging social harmony,” Minister Guy said this week.

Less than a month ago Opposition leader Daniel Andrews stated that even if the Federal Coalition Government weakens section 18C of the Race and Discrimination Act a Victorian state government has the power to override federal legislation, and if elected he will do so.

Matthew Guy went on to say “the Victorian government believes that the rights of all Victorians to practice their faiths and celebrate their culture without fear of discrimination, vilification or harassment is already enshrined in law in Victoria. We believe that our current laws are strong.”

“All governments in Australia have an obligation to protect and encourage social cohesion.”

Promakhos for the return of Marbles

promakhos%2002

A story about the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.

A love story about two Athenians who find redemption and transcendence through the Parthenon Marbles.

A celebrity screening of Promakhos, the feature film about two Greek lawyers who fight to return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece, was held last week in London, in the presence of actor and big reunification supporter Stephen Fry.

Directed and written by American brothers John and Coerte Voorhees, and the product of six years of research of the issue of reunification, Promakhos is a love story about two Athenians who find redemption and transcendence through the Parthenon Marbles.

Andreas (Pantelis Kodogiannis) is a Greek American lawyer who leads a litigation effort to return the Parthenon marbles to Greece. Upon his reentry to his homeland, he finds the city of Athens in a state of civil unrest. He rendezvous with the director of the Acropolis Museum (Giancarlo Giannini) in the ethereal Parthenon Gallery that overlooks the ancient Acropolis.

Andreas unveils a newly discovered Ottoman document that proves that the name of the official courier of Lord Elgin’s 1801 expedition to Athens was changed to allow for the Marbles to be sold to the British government. The museum director expresses reservations, but ultimately decides to send Andreas to London to begin the deposition against the British Museum.

Andreas is accompanied by Eleni (Kassandra Voyagis), his childhood friend, co-counsellor, and growing love interest. Eleni has a deep-seated desire to see the Marbles returned to Athens, as she sees the stones as a path toward redemption of the spirit of the people of Greece.

This naive view is tested as the British Museum general counsel (Paul Freeman) mounts a defence of his client, the British Museum (Michael Byrne as the curator). When the judge throws the case out, Andreas is humiliated and strikes out at Eleni. The two return to Athens to find the city in a state of chaos.
The film deals with the themes that are inscribed in the Marbles, including agones – struggles, loyalty and rebirth.

At its core Promakhos is about the test of true love through sacrifice. Within a modern context, it is an opportunity to tell a story of the rebirth of Athena and the renewal of justice. The struggle for the reunification of the sculptures is set against a background of civil strife and unrest. Like the great bronze statue of Athena Promakhos that used to stand in defence of the Parthenon, the characters in the film must find the courage to defend what they love the most. In this way the film will show how the story of the Parthenon Marbles will live forever in the city of Athens.

“Greece is the cradle of our civilisation and this film more than any I’ve ever seen gets that across. One would want to dedicate it perhaps to that great Athenian actress, the Athena of her day, Melina Mercouri, who is the first person to persuade many British of the justice and righteousness of this cause,” British actor Stephen Fry said at the London screening.

The film stars Michael Byrne, Georges Corraface, Spyros Fokas, Giancarlo Giannini, Paul Freeman, Pantelis Kodogiannis, Kassandra Voyagis and Yiorgo Voyagis.

South Melbourne Hellas falters, Oakleigh Cannons capitalise

oakleigh%20northcote

Northcote City was the only side to keep Oakleigh Cannons at bay with a 1-1 draw in round nine.

Just when Oakleigh Cannons’ title hopes were fading, their win and South Melbourne’s draw has slightly closed the gap.

It might have only been a draw, but South Melbourne’s failure to get its usual three points has given Oakleigh Cannons a sigh of relief.

They have been able to knock two points off their gap with South Melbourne after they got back on their feet with a 2-1 win against Bentleigh Greens.
Oakleigh coach Miron Bleiberg was unimpressed with his side’s win, after pitch conditions on the day soured both teams’ play.

“It was what you call an ugly win. I didn’t enjoy the game, I didn’t enjoy the win, I enjoyed the three points,” Bleiberg said.

The Cannons are the closest hope of dethroning the almost faultless South Melbourne, who have set up shop at the top of the NPLV ladder since the start of the season.

South Melbourne fell at the hands of Northcote City, after a series of errors “gifted” the team a goal.

“It was just a series of errors… and as a result we kind of gifted them a goal so that’s the most disappointing aspect as I felt it was the type of game were one goal would maybe be enough but it just wasn’t to be,” South Melbourne coach Chris Taylor said.

Northcote City plays another blockbuster Greek derby this Sunday, this time against Oakleigh Cannons.

Northcote will be taking the unexpected draw with them in this match, and being unbeaten in seven matches, Goran Lozanovski’s side has pretty great odds.

Up until Hume City defeated Oakleigh in Round 18, Northcote City was the only side to keep Oakleigh Cannons at bay with a 1-1 draw in round nine.

They played a mid week match against Dandenong Thunder, where they mirrored the 1-1 score.

Finishing has been a bit of an issue for Lozanovski’s side, and to keep their title, the team must address defence issues.

Third on the ladder, Heidelberg United have played two games in five days, but its nothing compared to what their opponents this week will be facing.

Melbourne Knights are leg weary, coming back from a loss in Brisbane for the FFA Cup, and a trip to Shepparton last weekend.

Heidelberg managed a solid 2-0 win against Hume City on the weekend, while their mid-week match against Green Gully saw them held to a 1-1 draw.

Sadly their title race is over, with 14 points separating them from South Melbourne.

At 6 foot 5, the Austrian star will cause a lot of problems for the A-League’s best defenders.

Sydney FC has signed Austria captain Marc Janko as the club’s international marquee player for the 2014/15 season.

Janko will replace Alessandro del Piero after agreeing to a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old striker, who stands at a huge 1.96 metres tall, has made 40 appearances for Austria and has managed 17 goals at the international level.

“Marc has an exceptional goal scoring record and is a fantastic addition to our attacking options, he will complement our current strikers well,” Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold said in a statement.

“We have put in a lot of time and effort to ensure he has the right qualities and right character to fit into our squad, and I’m very happy we have been able to sign him.”

Arnold has him tipped to be a huge problem for the A-League’s defenders.

“At 6 foot 5 he will cause a lot of problems for opposition defenders and he will give us a different threat up front.”

Janko has compiled an impressive resume on the European club scene, highlighted by winning three Austrian Bundesliga titles with Red Bull Salzburg.
He has also had stints at Dutch club FC Twente and Portuguese giant FC Porto.

“Marc is a striker of international pedigree having played for some of Europe’s biggest and most well-known clubs where his goal scoring record speaks for itself,” Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow said.

“As the current captain of the Austrian national team Marc is a proven leader and he brings with him these qualities to our club.”
