EPL: Burnley – Manchester Utd 0-0, the misery continues

1285470_AMN

Manchester United’s wait for a first win of the season continues after a 0-0 draw in the Barclays Premier League against newly promoted Burnley at Turf Moor.

Louis van Gaal was able to field Angel di Maria for the first time following his £59.7 million move from Real Madrid, but United failed to impress despite occasional flashes of brilliance from British football’s most expensive signing.

Having failed to beat Swansea City or Sunderland before a midweek League Cup exit at the hands of MK Dons, Van Gaal’s men could have few complaints with the result despite having late penalty claims turned down when substitute Ashley Barnes appeared to handle a shot from Ashley Young.

Burnley had opportunities to emulate the 1-0 victory they secured when the sides last met at Turf Moor in August 2009, with David Jones coming the closest to a goal when striking the crossbar early on. Sean Dyche’s side will take heart from claiming a first Barclays Premier League point of the season, following defeats to Chelsea and Swansea.

An unchanged Burnley came roaring out of the blocks and twice came close to punishing defensive errors in the opening five minutes. Former United midfielder Jones curled a left-footed free-kick against the woodwork after Phil Jones had fouled Lukas Jutkiewicz.

David de Gea was beaten on that occasion, but the goalkeeper made an important stop to deny Jutkiewicz within 60 seconds after a sloppy backpass from Jonny Evans.

The injury-hit visitors, still without Marcos Rojo as the Argentina defender awaits a work permit, gradually settled, with Di Maria offering early glimpses of his talent.

A wonderful ball over the top from the Argentinian led to Robin van Persie being superbly denied by Tom Heaton, who blocked his shot across goal.

Di Maria, who replaced Tom Cleverley in United’s starting XI, played a glorious pass on the spin during another attack that ended with Juan Mata slipping as he looked to shoot.

However, after soaking up some pressure Burnley soon threatened again, with Scott Arfield heading wide from a Jutkiewicz cross and Jones testing De Gea with a powerful half-volley.

Young saw an appeal for a spot-kick waved away before the break, having gone down under a challenge from Kieran Trippier.

The second half started slowly, but Dean Marney was forced to clear a Van Persie shot off the line in the 59th minute following more good work from Di Maria.

Van Persie nodded a Darren Fletcher cross over the bar two minutes later, while Matt Taylor could have done better at the other end as he shot at De Gea.

Di Maria and Van Persie were withdrawn in quick succession thereafter and United were unable to find a breakthrough despite penning their opponents back in the closing stages.

Burnley manager Dean Dyche: “People have a way of looking at teams and how they play.In the Premier League, it’s rare to find even a longer pass. They tend to play all short and sharp.

“That’s for others to decide how productive that can be. I know what I think is productive football, most of you have seen it last season, and we play some fantastic stuff.

“It’s productive, but it’s good to watch, the fans enjoy it and it does get points on the board. It’s a tougher challenge this season but that’s what I believe in, that’s what the players believe in and I think they delivered it very well.

“We come away pleased with a point, but I’m more pleased or as pleased with the performance.”

“The market has moved forward; we’ve got some money for the first time in a long time and yet the market has jumped forward to a level where it’s very difficult,” he added. We’ve been first in and first out to a number of situations, which were ones we thought we could progress.

“I really like the group you’ve seen today, I like the way they operate, but we do want strength in depth and people who can challenge to move us even further forward.”

Manchester United Louis van Gaal: “We were the stronger team, certainly in the second half. Of course the progress is there, but you have to win. A club as [big as] Manchester United have to win. When you have two points [out] of [a possible] nine… that is disappointing.”

“When we play against Queens Park Rangers [after the international break], [Marcos] Rojo shall have a permit.”

David Cameron wants FIFA to strip Russia of 2018 World Cup in political sanction move

1409394962888_wps_20_Prime_Minister_David_Came

David Cameron will push for Russia to be stripped of its right to host the 2018 World Cup as part of a sanctions threat against Vladmir Putin’s deployment of troops in Ukraine.

Alongside various officials from across the EU, the British Prime Minister is working on list of symbolic policies to isolate the Russian President until he draws an end to the conflict.

The fighting in eastern Ukraine between the military and Russian-backed separatists has left almost 2,600 people dead, according to UN figures, and Cameron is ready to put the case forwards to FIFA.

‘The idea of taking the World Cup away from Russia has come up in talks between European leaders,’ said one senior European diplomat to The Telegraph.

‘Britain especially has pushed it as a way of taking broader and more imaginative measures against Russia.’

NATO said this week Moscow has slipped at least 1,000 Russian soldiers and much heavy weaponry into Ukraine.

There have also been recent calls for Russia to be stripped of its first Formula One Grand Prix, which is due to take place in Sochi in October.

Greek-Australian: History of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Parish

hihih

Christmas 1965. First Divine Liturgy

The history of the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Parish has its beginnings in the year 1961 when the first influx of Greek immigrants began settling in the Marrickville region.

The Marrickville region had a great need for a Church in the 1950s with thousands of migrant Greeks residing in the area. The Church these days has grown to serve and support the spiritual needs of approximately 15,000 parishioners.

Between 1961 and 1966, the original house on the land acquired was converted into a Church to be able to serve the Greek community of Marrickville and its surrounding regions with liturgies and sacraments. The church today is now performing sacraments to the 2nd and 3rd generation Greeks in the region.

foundations

The laying of the foundations of the church

The foundation Stone was laid on June 6th, 1965 by His Eminence Archbishop Ezekiel of Australia and New Zealand, with the Official Opening taking place on the 3rd October 1966 by His Grace Bishop Dionysios of Nazianzos.

opening of church

9 October 1965. The opening of the church. 13 years passed since the first Greeks in the area thought of building a church

The consecration of the Parish was performed by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia on the 15th June 1975 where thousands of parishioners were present for this historic moment.

Today Saint Nicholas church stands as an amazing and breath taking architectural landmark in Marrickville. Its amazing structural design with the arching bell towers gives it a byzantine character. There is a reception hall on the grounds of the church, for the Parish needs and an afternoon Greek school, teaching our young children the Greek language.

Over the past three decades, the community continued its sacred mission. The Sunday School and Greek School programs along with a special emphasis on the religious services of the Church brought the community to a deeper realisation of its purpose and character. 0

Afternoon Greek School

The Afternoon Greek School at St Nicholas Church Marrickville has demonstrated a commitment and tradition of service toward the wider community by providing high quality education of the Modern Greek language and culture.

One of the primary objectives of the Afternoon Greek School at St Nicholas Parish is to provide a high standard of language education, in a safe and caring environment, which is complimentary to all members of the community.

Over the years, there has been a constant effort to improve the quality of the education program by developing teaching materials relevant to students’ learning needs and staff’s teaching methodology in order to attain a high standard of professional performance and student achievement.

The School’s dedicated teacher Mrs. Jenny Rennie is responsible for the 70 children who attend the school throughout the year. She is ably supported by a member of the Education Department from the Consulate General of Greece.

The school operates on a six day basis. The primary school students attend classes twice a week starting on Monday and concluding on Friday. The classes run from 4–6pm. The high school students attend classes on Saturday morning through to the afternoon.

A component of the students’ education is their involvement in a number of important extra-curricular activities during the year. These include participation in community events such as the annual Panigiri, as well as religious and national commemorative celebrations of Greek Independence Day (25th March) and Greek National Day (28th October).

To ensure that education is provided at a minimal cost to every student, financial support is obtained from the Department of Education and Training as well as government funding.

Efforts to strengthen the teaching material have resulted in the recent acquisition of publications, colourful readers, charts, cards, CDs, Radio-Cassette/CD players, laptops and DVD’s. This has been successful with the help of fund-raising and the generous efforts of parents and benefactors of the community.

Government reacts to Berlin declaration on FYROM name dispute

west_balkans_500

German Chancellor Angela Merkel,(R) welcomes the Prime Minister of FYROM Nikola Gruevski, at the ‘West Balkan Conference’ at the chancellery in Berlin, Germany, on Thursday.

One day after a summit in Berlin called for a swift solution to the name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), the government in Athens Friday confirmed its support of ongoing talks.

“Greece supports the negotiation process,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Constantinos Koutras said Friday, stressing that Greece’s position is in line with European norms and international law.

His comments came a day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU officials hosted leaders from eight Western Balkan nations in Berlin. The gathering, which was designed to promote economic and political reform in the region, appeared to mark a shift from Washington to Berlin of diplomatic pressure for a name settlement, according to analysts.

“The key to a substantial development in this process is not to be found in Athens,” Koutras said, describing the issue as a matter of regional stability.

A joint declaration issued after the Berlin conference said that the “dispute must be urgently be resolved by a willingness to compromise on all sides.”

Match Preview: Tottenham vs Liverpool

imagesP5QYBBH2

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers does not want Mario Balotelli’s potential debut to divert focus ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Premier League.

The Italy forward is in line for his Liverpool bow at White Hart Lane, having arrived from AC Milan on Monday amid plenty of excitement on Merseyside. Formerly of Manchester City, Balotelli returns to the Barclays Premier League after acknowledging his exit from the English top flight was a “mistake”.

The 24-year-old scored 26 goals in 43 league appearances for Milan and Rodgers will be keen for the striker to boost a Liverpool side yet to hit top gear this season. A narrow 2-1 win over Southampton was followed by a 3-1 defeat to champions Manchester City.

Balotelli scored the winning goal for City the last time he faced Spurs, and Rodgers has been pleased with his latest recruit’s attitude in training this week.

“Mario is fine, he has settled in very well,” Rodgers said. “He has looked fantastic in training and he is a good lad. The focus is very much on his football and he has done very well.

“This is not the Mario Balotelli show. He’s a good player and a talented player but he has a lot of work to do here. We’ve got a number of top-class players. The star of this team will always be the team.”

Adam Lallana is in contention to make his Liverpool debut after recovering from a knee injury. The England midfielder has not yet featured for the Merseyside club since his transfer from Southampton after sustaining knee ligament damage during the pre-season tour of the United States.

Liverpool gave a positive outlook on Lallana’s fitness on Friday, though, revealing that the 26-year-old will be in the squad to face a Spurs side who have made a bright start under Mauricio Pochettino, Lallana’s head coach at Southampton last season.

“Adam will be in the squad, for sure,” Rodgers said. “He has looked fantastic in training. Of course he is well short of match fitness but in training for the last couple of weeks he has been exceptional.”

The Liverpool manager stated that Glen Johnson (thigh) is unlikely to be ready for the trip to White Hart Lane and he will monitor the fitness of fellow full-back Alberto Moreno (ankle).

Rodgers also expects more activity in the transfer window ahead of Monday’s deadline, with players set to leave the club rather than arrive.

“There’ll probably be more movement out than coming in, I would say,” he added. “We’ve still got offers for players to go. Every player here knows their situation, so if they’re here after that deadline on Monday then they’ve decided to stay but their game time will be very limited. “At this moment in time, there are not many more to come in, if any.”

Jordon Ibe is one player to have left Anfield on Friday, sealing a season-long loan move to Derby County.

Spurs have demonstrated fine form at the start of Pochettino’s maiden campaign in charge, winning each of their Barclays Premier League matches against West Ham and Queens Park Rangers to reach the summit of the table, while also moving into the UEFA Europa League group stages.

Pochettino is not reading too much into the fact that Liverpool put nine goals past Spurs last season.  A 5-0 defeat by Rodgers’ men at White Hart Lane signalled the end of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign and Tottenham were also well beaten with Tim Sherwood in charge at Anfield.

“It is a new season, I think a different style, different philosophy,” said Pochettino. “Liverpool invested a lot of money this summer and we went another way.

“We believe in our squad and add some players for the balance. Two different ways [of approaching things].”

Kyle Walker (pelvis) and Roberto Soldado (neck) are the only injury worries for Tottenham, who have the option of including new defensive recruit Federico Fazio.

Spurs (from): Friedel, Lloris, Vorm, Assou-Ekotto, Chiriches, Davies, Dier, Fazio, Fryers, Kaboul, Naughton, Rose, Vertonghen, Walker, Bentaleb, Capoue, Chadli, Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela, Lennon, Holtby, Paulinho, Sandro, Townsend, Adebayor, Kane, Soldado.

Match Preview: Everton vs Chelsea

everton chelsea

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has not ruled Diego Costa out of the Barclays Premier League visit to Everton on Saturday despite fears over the striker’s fitness.

The Spain international has scored in the league wins over Burnley and Leicester City but Chelsea have confirmed that Costa had a “minor muscular problem” and that he would be monitored ahead of the trip to Goodison Park.

Chelsea manager Mourinho confirmed that Costa has not trained in the past two days, but is set for a light session on Friday and his participation at Everton will depend on how he comes through that work out.

“At this time I can’t say much, we’re trying everything for him to play tomorrow,” Mourinho said. “He didn’t train the last two days but today [Friday] is the last day, so today we must make a decision to select him or not.

“He has to try a light training session to see if the reaction is positive. If the reaction is positive we take him to Everton, to play or to sit on the bench, let’s see. If the reaction is not positive obviously we don’t select him, at this moment I don’t know much.

“It’s a better scenario [than first feared] but what matters now is the match tomorrow not the match in three weeks or four weeks, tomorrow he is a doubt.”

Costa could prove a big miss as Chelsea try to improve on a disappointing record against Everton on the road. The hosts have won four of the last five league meetings between the sides at Goodison Park, including a 1-0 triumph courtesy of a Steven Naismith goal last season.

In contrast to their visitors, Everton received a boost to their attacking ranks this week. Having already secured the services of Romelu Lukaku on a permanent basis during the close-season, Roberto Martinez snapped up another Chelsea old boy in the form of Samuel Eto’o on Tuesday.  And the Everton manager has hinted that the Cameroonian, who retired from international duty on Wednesday, could be thrown straight into his starting XI.

“It is difficult,” he told the Everton website. “I tried to have that conversation and, realistically, I would have liked him to have 10 or 11 sessions before we put him in a competitive environment. But I quite quickly learned that I was wasting my time; he wants to be helpful to the team straight away and he wants to be involved.

“He is working [on Thursday] and everything will go down to what condition he has over the next two or three days to make that decision. He arrives at a good time with the international break and that will speed up his adaptation period.”

Lukaku limped out of Everton’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal last weekend but is in contention to face his former club, while Christian Atsu – on loan from Chelsea – is ineligible.

Bryan Oviedo (broken leg), Arouna Kone (knee) and Ross Barkley (knee) remain sidelined, with Steven Pienaar (groin) also absent.

Everton (from): Howard, Robles, Stanek, Alcaraz, Baines, Browning, Coleman, Distin, Duffy, Galloway, Garbutt, Hibbert, Jagielka, Stones, Pennington, Barry, Besic, Grant, Gibson, McCarthy, McGeady, Osman, Byrne, Eto’o, Hope, Long, Lukaku, McAleny, Mirallas, Naismith.

Chelsea (from): Cech, Courtois, Schwarzer, Ake, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Ivanovic, Luis, Terry, Zouma, Fabregas, Hazard, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Salah, Van Ginkel, Willian, Costa, Drogba, Schurrle, Torres.

Failed bid to send 157 asylum seekers to India costs $12m

Cost analysis finds the money was spent to ensure Sri Lankan nationals did not challenge ‘stop the boats’ policy.

The federal government’s failed bid to return 157 asylum seekers to India cost taxpayers more than $12m, as passengers were held at sea for nearly a month before being brought to the Australian mainland, it has been reported.

A cost analysis by Fairfax Media found the money was outlaid by the government to ensure the Sri Lankan nationals did not arrive on Australian shores to challenge immigration minister Scott Morrison’s resolve to “stop the boats”.

The analysis, based largely on senate estimates figures, includes the daily running cost of the navy frigate HMAS Perth which first intercepted the boat after it left India, and the customs vessel Ocean Protector where the asylum seekers were kept on board for 29 days.

Also included are accommodation costs at Cocos Island for 14 immigration officials plus $600,000 in chartered flights to take the asylum seekers from there to the Curtin detention centre.

There were also estimated legal costs of over $136,000 associated with the high court challenge launched against the government plus the costs of Morrison’s last-minute trip to New Delhi where he presented Indian officials with two cricket bats worth $695 each.

Human Rights Watch said the cost was “outrageous and unnecessary” and Greens immigration spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young said the cost could have been avoided if the asylum seekers had been taken straight to Christmas Island.
